banning swearing in the car is so stupid. the broadcasters literally CHOOSE which messages to broadcast. just don’t choose the ones with swearing in it. it’s extremely simple. all athletes swear most athletes just don’t have a mic in front of them the entire time they’re doing their job
Ben Sulayem expecting athletes not to curse in a sport is almost as out of touch of him thinking rap music is the one genre of music with vulgarities. To be fair, Max had the incident due to a press conference but I fully expect F1 to regulate language in team radios if they begin pushing on this clampdown. Never leave a dollar unturned when it comes to the FIA and F1, no matter what it means to the sport. F1 is a business first, entertainment second and sport last.

Max is Dutch and as a fellow Dutchman I have to say that we use a lot of English swear words in Dutch because they don’t sound as rude (to us!) as the Dutch equivalent. Also on Dutch radio and TV swearing is never beeped out nor will any TV professional ever apologise for the swear words used by a guest. Swearing isn’t considered good taste but we leave it at that. Max could and perhaps should learn not to swear but I think we should keep in mind that when drivers are racing they are full of adrenaline and I don’t think we should judge them for using ‘colourful language’ at those times).
Same here, I often swear in a foreign language if I'm in company where it's inappropriate, like around children or pensioners, merde being a particular fav of mine 👍
How is an athlete suppose to express themselves and their opinion freely if you limit their freedom of expression? Swearing is an everyday part of life, there's no avoiding it.
Nope, McLaren will revisit their rear wing... It was still probably inspired by Red Bulls' flexible wings from the past, just made to bend another way... Formula 1 here, not a spec cars championship!... ETA: MV's swearing punishment is a complete joke in a sport where competitors risk their lives to compete... But nowadays we live in world where everyone is easily getting offended and freedom of speech (telling what you really think) is the worst of things...
The FIA are seriously making up authoritarian rules to suit their puritanical needs rather than making F1 exciting, this is why F1 needs to dump the FIA and get another body to take the issues plaguing modern F1 seriously like Indy Racing League or IMSA.

Punishing swearing is JOKE, especially in a sport where competitors risk their lives every time they step into their cars... As a McLaren fan- this MV's punishment is a complete joke...
The fact that the FIA are using the young watching as a reason to ban swearing shows how out of touch with the public they are. I would say the majority of F1’s older viewers would be more offended by the language then the young viewers would be.
It is a prudish attitude of someone that by sanctioning the Michael Massi mess hurt the sport way more than ever single curse ever spoken by drivers and, by the way, made many F1 fans curse... a whole lot!
Vettel used to swear in interviews and on the radio. A lot. It's actually very common with people who have English as a second (third, fourth...) language. I've been studying linguistics for a long time, and I have heard (especially Germanic peoples) many of them swear as part of their conversation. I assume that oftentimes they don't realise when a particular word is considered to be more offensive than they thought it was. Instead of bleeping - assuming they want the audience to presume that no one swears - they they should just cut the word out. It would - should - be less obvious what they are saying.
If you don't want to hear a driver swearing whilst racing, don't publish the team radio. If you don't want to hear them swear outside the car, don't film them inside the pre- podium driver's room. If you want the 'colour', deal with it.
Swearing, two issues, team radio and interviews. If team radio, F1 broadcasts it, so their fault, period. If interviews, the simple answer is drivers say nothing during interviews to prevent sanctions.
So F1 is worried bout kids hearing an odd bad word and then go on an use the bad words themselves, why does F1 not worry about the same kids watching cars do 300klm around the track and not worry about the kids trying the same on the road when older ? 🤷🏻♂️
Swearing on an interview, yes, but on the radio FFS no, if they don't like it, don't air it, they're only worried about their precious income. Shit isn't considered Swearing in many languages, English isn't the only language out there and I say that as an Englishman.
Like Lando said, in the modern world of social media where you can virtually say anything, if the FIA says the drivers have to stop swearing, I believe that’s just going to make the comments over the radio “fake” and FAR less entertaining. As an American race fan, I say, let them say what they want when the helmet is on. It creates more excitement, talking points, etc. Plus, there’s a delay, so it’s not hard for the FIA/broadcast to bleep it out. With that said, when they’re out of the car and in a press conference, they should control their wording. That’s expected. But PLEASE DON’T TAME THINGS DOWN WHEN THE HELMET IS ON! Trust me, they will lose a lot of the fan base that is growing this sport in America and other big markets.
FIA can get bent , perfect solution remove press conferences. Fans are always on the side of the drivers/constructors, it’s why we watch the sport. we aren’t paying our hard earned money to watch people in suits fumble the sport.
Absolutely punish it. Everyone in the family should be able to enjoy F1 "live" - carcams included. Drivers are extremely well paid to represent their team brand to the media.
