I am 100% self taught from UA-cam on how to knit. I have tried countless times to make a sock and the gusset always confused me. This is the first video that is so clear and easy to understand that I’m actually excited to try again!
Erica , you have persuaded me to try dpns for the first time in decades! Im actually using my grandmother’s ones … and I;m nearly 70 so they have lasted well!! Such a wonderfully helpful video and I now know I can knit beanies for my granddaughters as well. Thank you
Thank you so much for your beautiful, elaborate tutorial. As a beginner I can vouch that any beginner who never knit socks before can knit very easily,if they follow this tutorial step by step. I knitted my first pair of socks by your tutorial. Best wishes for you and your channel.
Thank you, you are doing a great job at explaining. I'm forwarding this video to my grand daughters. I've been knitting and crochet for 53 yrs . I feel you can do better at teaching my grand daughters. Happy new year! Again , thank you !
Absolutely the best sock tutorial I have watched! where were you years ago before I got frustrated and gave up on socks?! They never fit right. It was always mostly the finer details that no designer ever mentions like avoiding laddering, proper cast on for stretchy ribbing and your method of pick up knit on the edges of the heel is the fastest and best I've seen. The only think you didn't mention was negative ease as mine always end up sloppy and too long. All in all, excellent and thank you....I might try again someday.
I really want to thank you for your time in making this video. It's been a while since I knitted a pair of socks. I'm self taught and learned a lot about knitting along the way. This is so helpful! Much appreciated!
Your socks are so beautiful!! I think I have to watch this 5 or 12 more times (😂😂😂) to try & get the hang of it!! The short ones really do work up quickly! I would love to see how you do the full socks with color work. Thank You for sharing this. I really would love to try it out for myself.💜
I have struggled with heal and gusset. Have watched several other knitters and you are the only one that slows it down and explain it in layman’s terms. Thank you so much. I think I can finish my Christmas stocking.
Thelma writes: Brilliant tutorial, Erica!!! It has certainly brought joy to my day watching the video and has brought back my inspiration. Thank you so much for your patience in doing the tutorial. God bless and ❤❤❤
Loved this video Erica and Y E S would also love the colored knit one especially because Christmas is right around the corner and where I live in Portland Maine you definitely need warm socks with your present too of course! Like a new pair of boots because who doesn’t like to be spoiled!!!
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial video. I have always wanted to make socks and yours is the first explanation that I was able to follow and complete! 🙂😄😀
I am SO excited, I made my 1st sock! You made it super easy! The pattern had me a bit confused with K2,P2 and the stitch distribution on the 3 needles, but the video cleared things up! Forever grateful! Thank you!
Thank you so much for offering the free pdf I wanted to try making socks so bad but didn’t want to spend all kids of money on it I appreciate it so much ❤
I *finally* finished my first pair of socks! To those following the pattern and the video, note 2 things - 1. the cuff on the pattern says 1x1 rib, while the video shoes a 2x2 rib. And 2. The video shows ending the sock on many stitches (making a more square toe) while the written pattern ends in decreasing to 12 stitches for all sizes, creating a cute rounded toe. The written pattern provides a sock that looks a lot prettier and polished in my opinion. Just keep this is mind while keeping up with the video. I’m a complete beginner and these are first socks I’ve ever completed, and I’m over the moon. My goal in learning to knit was solely so I could knit socks. I figure I could just crochet everything else 😅 Thank you, Erica, for the detailed tutorial! ❤ (I used long circular needles for this, as they’re the only needles I’m comfortable with… but on the toe of my second sock I used DPNs and became a lot more comfortable with them during the process ☺️)
Thank you for a great video! What a fun Friday morning watching this sock tutorial. I made a pair of socks in a class about 15 years ago and now I want to pick it up again and make yours. This is great to have to follow along with as I relearn. I love all your videos, your energy and your explanations. So many projects started, is my problem I can’t keep up! I want to do it all. ❤
I wanted to knit a toe up sock pattern but all the videos I have seen have made it more difficult than it actually is. Then, I came across your video. It was not exactly what I was looking for but you have made sock knitting so simple. Your pattern is perfect!!! Thank you!!!❤
Thank you for this tutorial; you explained everything very well for a first time sock knitter and I am looking forward to knit a pair of socks. I would like to also sera tutorial on color work. 😊.
OMG! Erica, I have always wanted to make socks but didn’t know how. My mom lives too far away from me to sit with her to learn. I’m going to go by my supplies and see what I can do. You just gave me hope that I can do this. THANK YOU!!!💖💖💖
I can’t believe I’m knitting is a good way to learn, I learned to crochet with the I can’t believe I’m crocheting book as I’m left handed and couldn’t find someone that would teach me. Because I had more than one needle to work with I had no trouble with knitting.
Thank you so much for the pattern and tutorial! So well done. I appreciate the time and effort you made in making this through and concise video. I would also appreciate a tutorial on pattern and color changes. Thanks again for a wonderful video.
Wonderful video.I have been knitting socks for many years now, and I always used patons classic wool, which is 100% wool. The socks I made over 10 years ago are still intact, without holes.Just recently I discovered socks yarn (patons kroy sock yarn and joann brand k&c) and bought quite a few skeins to try them out.The yarn is so darn thin that I need the adult size pattern for my tiny kids' feet.I only bought them because of their color patterns. Not sure how long will they last, as my 100% wool ones are still going strong.
LOVE this tutorial. You demonstrated each step ver clear and made us so easy to follow. Thank you so much. One thing, I just found it difficult when I changed the needle without creating a ladder effect, even though I have pulled the yarn tight on the 1st and 2nd stitches 😞
I would love to see a color work tutorial. Thank you for making this tutorial. I am going to try to knit your socks. I’ve never done socks before because I was intimidated. But your video really made me feel like I could. Wish me luck!
FANTASTIC! I wish I had this video years ago when I knit my first pair of socks! I’m not great at picking up stitches and I love your method! I look forward to trying it. Please do a video on color work!
Yay!! I’m a little intimidated with the multiple needles, but I’m up for the challenge! Lol! I’ve only ever used the looped needles on your easy knit hat video, lol! I would LOVE the colorwork tutorial! Thank you so much!
Thank you! I made my first pair and they turned out great! Bucket list item checked! It would be helpful too if you could give some tips for making these in all one color. I don’t know what to do at the heel if we don’t cut the yarn 😂 Thanks so much!
Wonderful video. Your mistake during sewing up the toe…yikes! Thank you for correcting at the top right hand corner…which I DID NOT see the first five try’s. Newby here!😮. Looking forward to more videos from you. Thank you again
This was such a great video! I have always been intimidated by knitting socks, but your tutorial made it look doable! I would love to see a color work tutorial 👍🏻👍🏻
I have felt inspired to try socks again - love that you have the pattern also - problem is I have sock yarn, how do I adjust your pattern for that weight???? HELP! (Thanks in anticipation!)
Hi, you'll want to knit a little swatch with your yarn and needles, then measure to see how many stitches you need to get a gauge that matches my pattern.
Erica, you are amazing!! How in the world did you learn how to do all the crafting things you do? I really enjoy watching your videos and look forward to them. You're very inspiring!! Thank you!
Hi Erica.....love your video. Can you tell me what I would do, if not using a contrasting color for the heel & toe, when it comes to knitting the one stitch on needle 2 & leaving it on the needle when doing the heel flap. Do I need to do that or do I just skip that step continuing with the working yarn on needles 1 & 3?
Im a hundred self make from you tube video, please post a christmas stocking socks patterns from your Christmas pattern? Good job ! Thank you so gorgeous! Im a crochet sock not a knitter
Great video. I always wanted to learn to make socks. I’m going to work on this pattern and learn this. I’m left handed, will everything just be reversed as far as the needles? Thank you. 💕 Yes. I would love to learn the how to do the Christmas socks.
Yes I believe it’s hurst mirrored. That said I would watch a few left handed knitting tutorials to see. Some of the left handed knitters I know actually knit continental style.
@@erica_arndt I don’t knit continental style. I actually hold my thread like you. But I will rewatch your video in slow motion as I start. I really love the pattern. It looks easy. My problem has always been what needle to use first and second and so on. But I really want to learn.💕
Hi Erica! Love your video and I have always wanted to make cotton socks, but was told they don’t hold their shape as they have no spring to the yarn. How have these held up? Thank you!!!
Yes, you can definitely do magic loop! Just split the stitches in half instead of the three needles. Also, when you get to the heel you have to make a few adjustments as well, but there are other tutorials out there to help with magic loop :)
Hello, I just am just a bit confused... is it normal that for the cuff, at min 28:27 in the video, when transferring my stitches from needle one on to needle three, that my stockinette row count is thrown off? I am at 10 rows of stockinette on all three needles, but naturally, knitting stitches on needle 1 to transfer them onto needle 3 means that the stitches initially on needle one end up being 11 rows of stockinette and don't match up with the 10 rows of stockinette everywhere else... does this get corrected?
Would you work the heel by knitting needle 3 onto needle 1 if you weren't changing color? Or do you have a separate video on knitting the heal without color change?
Hi, I don't have a video for that, but instead of cutting your yarn, you would just knit to the end of the heel needle, then knit as you pick up the stitches along the side of the heel flap, knit across the top of your foot, then knit/pickup each side heel stitch, then knit back to the center of the heel. From there you can follow the gusset instructions.
Hi Erica, I cast on 36 stitches instead of 40 to reduce the size of the sock . Now I am ready to do the heel turn using 18 stiches on my needle instead of 20 from the original instructions. How do I modify this section , i.e., for Row 1 (RS) SL 1 purlwise, do I Knit 8 instead of K10 and then follow the pattern as is or does this section have to be modified further. Can you please advise as I have come to a standstill. Much appreciated.
Hi, yes, that will work, K8 instead of 10 then do the heel turn the same, you just won't have as many turns as I do in the video. Hope that makes sense!
this is my first time kitting socks, I have watched many tutorials and have decided to go with you. I tried the toe up socks and just didn't get it so I will try four needles instead of two. doesn't make sense to me either wish me luck.
I made these socks, casting on 40 stitches. They are way too big for my Mum who has narrow feet. Do I simply cast on less stitches and follow the pattern as per normal.
I used to knit super simple things long time ago and then switch to crochet only. Do you think that if I practice a bit purl and knit I could do this project? Is there something else I should pratice a bit before diving in this?
Yes, I'm using a cotton yarn for these, so it's also great for washcloths! Some of that is trial and error based on your gauge, but you can try it on as you go, or measure your foot length from heel to toe. :)
Just completed my first pair of socks!! I can’t wait to make more! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this tutorial. I’ve been wanting to learn how to knit socks for several years not, but just couldn’t find a pattern I could follow on my own. I feel like a grown up knitter now! lol;-)
Hello! Quick question. The pattern says to do k2, p2 for the first 12 rounds. The video says k1, p1 for the first 10 rounds. Is one better than the other for this sock?
Hi, sorry that's a typo on the pattern, but it doesn't matter, it just makes the cuff portion a tad longer to do 12 rounds. You can make it even longer if you want more of a crew sock :) Thanks for letting me know, I'll get the pattern updated now.
Hi, the information for the various sizes is included in the free PDF download here: www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/blog/2023/05/ericas-easy-knit-sock-tutorial-beginner-friendly.html
I wish that it specified needing more than 2 of each size needle before you get into the pattern. I went to the store this morning to get everything only to get home and realize I didnt have enough needles.
I am 100% self taught from UA-cam on how to knit. I have tried countless times to make a sock and the gusset always confused me. This is the first video that is so clear and easy to understand that I’m actually excited to try again!
You are so welcome!

I want to thank you so much for this video. I have been trying to make sock and not understanding needle numbers. Super excited now
Thank you for this! I can knit socks but DPN were a challenge but this chunky sock really helped me get the hang of the DPN’s.
What a great video! I always have an issue picking up gusset stitches, you’ve made it so clear! Thank you.
Excellent xx
Thanks a lot for your clear and precise explanations !
Thank you so much for making this process so understandable. Your demonstrations and explanations really allowed me to get the process.

Love this tutorial. Thank you so much.
Thank you ❤❤❤ I made my first sock
Omg no way could I do that idk wow you are so talented
Love your easy to follow video! I am going to give socks a try! 💜

‘Find new friends’ if they are looking to close at toe decrease rounds. 😂😂 I agree!!! That’s hilarious. 🤣
Awesome!! So excited to try this out! ❤
Great video! Thank you!
I love them, i made with cotton yarn very soft ..thanks you v m!
Wonderful video. Your mistake during sewing up the toe…yikes! Thank you for correcting at the top right hand corner…which I DID NOT see the first five try’s. Newby here!😮. Looking forward to more videos from you. Thank you again
This was great information. You cleared up many issues for me. Ever tried the Shadow Wrap Heel? No decreases after the heel.
Ty. Great tutorial.
Hello! Lovely. I just finished my pair of socks. I feel soooo happy. Thanks, Erika! Dear, where can I find the pattern of the jelly socks, please?
This was such a great video! I have always been intimidated by knitting socks, but your tutorial made it look doable! I would love to see a color work tutorial 👍🏻👍🏻
I Knit too! Yay
Great ! Gives me inspiration
Brilliant thank you 😊
Thank you so much! May I use the same principle for other patterns?
Erica, you are amazing!! How in the world did you learn how to do all the crafting things you do? I really enjoy watching your videos and look forward to them. You're very inspiring!! Thank you!
Fantastic you make it look so easy. Going to give socks a try. When measuring for the pattern what part of the foot do you measure?
You can either use a ruler, or I show the sock stick from www.knitographyfarm.com
Hi, if doing a solid color sock, you can just work back and forth on 1 and 3 for the heel.
Thank you!!
Im a hundred self make from you tube video, please post a christmas stocking socks patterns from your Christmas pattern? Good job ! Thank you so gorgeous! Im a crochet sock not a knitter
Can you show how to do this on Magic loop
Tanks .i liket it😊
Love your video! So helpful to me. Do you have other knitting videos that I could learn from?
Yes I do! I have a whole knitting playlist if you scroll down on my main channel 😊
The cotton definitely stretches a bit. You can use a nylon based yarn for the heel and toe which helps.
Thank you!
Don’t give Up!!!
Can this be done magic loop style? I started a sock this way but have never used the multiple needles approach. Great video!
Yes, you can definitely do magic loop! Just split the stitches in half instead of the three needles. Also, when you get to the heel you have to make a few adjustments as well, but there are other tutorials out there to help with magic loop :)
@@erica_arndt okay, will do. Thanks! 😀

I love the tutorial. Thanks. I'm not sure if you know that you say acrost instead of across.
Hey just found your channel please can I do this on my nine inch circular needles
When using sock blockers, do you need to buy the exact size for every size you make?
I have a medium size so it works pretty well unless you're making kids socks. You can also just lay them flat to block.
Can i knit this sock on circular needles?
Can you have tutorials on Christmas long pair sock you have on the side please
Hi Erica, yes it makes sense, thank you so much. Your tutorial is amazing and I am enjoying the process. Your a real gem.
this is my first time kitting socks, I have watched many tutorials and have decided to go with you. I tried the toe up socks and just didn't get it so I will try four needles instead of two. doesn't make sense to me either wish me luck.
I loved the beginner sock video but I can’t seem to find the pattern pdf link- help please.
I made these socks, casting on 40 stitches. They are way too big for my Mum who has narrow feet. Do I simply cast on less stitches and follow the pattern as per normal.
Yes, you for this pattern you can cast on less stitches or you can go down a needle size as well to alter the size.
I used to knit super simple things long time ago and then switch to crochet only. Do you think that if I practice a bit purl and knit I could do this project? Is there something else I should pratice a bit before diving in this?
Absolutely! It's pretty easy, the heel is the hardest part and even that's pretty straight forward!
Great video. It really hjelped me but Where i can find written pattern for different sizes?
In the description box below the video! Click 'show more' or 'more' on your mobile device.
Thanks Erica, Two Qs:
1.) Is that the same cotton one would use for making washcloths?
2.) How does one know which size to knit? Thank you
Yes, I'm using a cotton yarn for these, so it's also great for washcloths! Some of that is trial and error based on your gauge, but you can try it on as you go, or measure your foot length from heel to toe. :)
Curious what to do if I don’t change to a contrasting color…absolutely love your tutorial though!
You can just start the toe with the same color :)
If I have 48 stitches do I still knit 10 stitches before SSK K 1 and turn?
Hi, the information for the various sizes is included in the free PDF download here: www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/blog/2023/05/ericas-easy-knit-sock-tutorial-beginner-friendly.html
Can't seem to find the PDF on the link below

This is a great tutorial, however, you are saying K1, P1 for the cuff section but the written pattern says K2, P2
I was wondering the same thing
I wish that it specified needing more than 2 of each size needle before you get into the pattern. I went to the store this morning to get everything only to get home and realize I didnt have enough needles.
Hi, I'm sorry, most DPN needle sets come with 5 needles. I'm not sure I've seen them with less in a pack?
I’m trying to learn but not catching on to quick I know how to crochet but want to learn to knit really bad
