  • I just picked up the GMMK Pro and wanted to do a special build in it. This is my first 75% keyboard and I'm digging the layout. It's also the first board I've tried with a polycarbonate plate option, so I went with that choice. I enjoyed the Boba U4Ts tremendously on my Tokyo60 build, so I'm using them on the GMMK Pro too. Lastly, I recently discovered the Olivia keycap set and really like them, but wasn't even in the keyboard hobby yet during the previous group buys, so I went and got a set of knockoffs on Amazon.
    This video is an overview of the build process in the GMMK Pro, with portions focused on lubing the switches, tuning the stabilizers with the holee mod, and the disassembly and reassembly of the GMMK Pro, along with installing the switches and keycaps. Finally, to top it off, a sound test of the completed build and recap of the components. Please enjoy!

    3:30 Gazzew (the creator of U4T) recommends that you should have the stem pressed down as you snap the housing back together, not doing this has a chance of bending the leaf contact and decreasing the tactility.

    • @bigxie
      @bigxie  3 роки тому +17

      Yeah, this is a good guideline, and applies to all switches, not just Bobas. But in general, as long as the stem is aligned with the sliders on the bottom housing, it's pretty much impossible to mess up the leaf (personally I've damaged the leaf once in like 1000 switches I've lubed and it was because I had the stem facing the wrong direction). Thanks for commenting this though, I think it can help some other viewers reading through the comments!

    I have a super pricy GMMK Pro build too. Uses Polycarbonate plate, a frankenswitch made by me using Tecsee Purple Pandas and Ice Mangoes, l*bed with Tribosys 3203, 3204 and Krytox 105. Stabs are Owlabs Owlstabs V2 screw-ins, fully tuned. I didn't use any of the screws for the polycarbonate plate as I thought it would give the board a tiny bit more flex, and I loosened the GMMK Pro chassis screws (connecting top frame and bottom frame) so there would be more gasket flex. Also used some of keychron's own Developer keycaps and a Silver knob. Good build IMO.

    Great video. Nobody else I've watched mentioned the self-tapping screws that the PC plate comes with. I was able to figure this out on my own but several videos I've watched struggled to get the PC plate screwed back into the PCB since they apparently missed the extra baggy with these screws in it.

    • @bigxie
      @bigxie  3 роки тому

      Interesting, maybe the bag of screws is inconsistently placed in the packaging? But mine were taped to the little box the PC plate was in and it was pretty much impossible to miss. Hopefully it helps some other viewers not miss it.

    • @Ragnorok64

      I set the pack of screws to the top of my table and immediately forgot about them. Reusing the default screws took some elbow grease but they worked. The parts where the screws go into the polycarb are thick enough that I don't think there's a risk of it cracking.

    Awesome video, the modding end result was really good. I am curious, does the spacebar foam help with the acoustics? Wondering if I should grab one or not.

    • @bigxie
      @bigxie  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Yeah the foam makes the spacebar a bit less hollow and more muted, which I felt matches the overall sound profile of the board. It's a bit subtle so maybe you can try without it first and if you think the spacebar is too loud, then you can pick up the foam later (or make your own).

    Awesome video Andrew. For many of us, the main thing we’ll be doing is mounting the polycarbonate plate. I’m really confused/stressed about that part. Any further info? That part of the video was pretty quick.

    • @bigxie
      @bigxie  3 роки тому

      Hey Hudson, it's not too bad swapping out the plates. If you're using the stock GOAT stabilizers, there should be no fitment issues. If you're using aftermarket ones, just take care to align the cutouts and maybe apply some pressure to get the stabilizers through if it's a tight fit. Otherwise, the only other thing to look out for is to not reuse the 8 plate screws from the aluminum plate, but to specifically replace them with the self tapping screws that come with the polycarb plate. The PC plate is not threaded, so you'll need to use some grunt to screw it on to the PCB with the self tapping screws. You may also want to make note of the orientation of the diffuser strips when you remove them, which I forgot to do, but I also think it doesn't really affect the performance of them whichever direction you put them back in.

    @ericqhochuli6004 3 роки тому

    Excellent video and I am really impressed with the sound profile you were able to get out of the board. I would love to hear more about why a stiffer plate is favorable for tactile switches and I would also love a video with more experimental mods on this board. Thank you for the great work. I really hoping to get my email for the flex batch this week.

    • @bigxie
      @bigxie  3 роки тому

      Thanks, I was pleasantly surprised by the sound as well! I'm under that impression from what I've read, which is that a stiffer board helps with the responsivity of tactile and clicky switches, which in turn helps to make their tactile event/click more "crisp". But this is my first keyboard with a gasket mount as well as polycarbonate plate, so I should have a chance to verify myself, experimenting with different configurations.
      I'm gonna take a break though since this took me like 6 hours to build and film last Saturday and about 10 hours to edit (while teaching myself Premiere) on Sunday. Hopefully the follow ups will be much faster 😅

      Nice! Yeah I think it varies by plate and unfortunately, mine didn't fit in the stock Alu plate. The PC plates do bend the PCB a little, hopefully it's fixed in future batches, but I think it's mostly aesthetic since it gets flattened out pretty well when reassembled.

    • @runescape90jon
      @runescape90jon 3 роки тому

      @@bigxie Yeah it is more expensive because of import fees/duties and the parts are generally marked up in addition to the currency rate. For example, the GMMK Pro is listed at $239.99 CAD at most Canadian vendors, effectively $20 USD more than the MSRP. Also, the lack of parts vendors in Canada makes sourcing parts difficult and often times costly.

    Hi Andrew, thank you for the great video. I went to purchase the same keyboard spacebar foam and there is a disclaimer that they don't work with plate-mounted stabilizers (like the one in the GMMK Pro) - did you have any issues getting them in? Do they just need a bit of modding?

    • @bigxie
      @bigxie  3 роки тому

      The GMMK Pro's GOAT stabilizers are PCB mounted screw-in stabilizers, so there is no incompatibility there. The plates do support plate mounted stabilizers, but that would be an aftermarket downgrade, so I would not recommend that. Where you may need to watch out is if you're using the knock off Olivia keycaps, the pink spacebar has some extra posts in it which you'll need to poke an extra hole or two in the foam to accommodate. If you use the normal white spacebar in the kit, it has the "GMK" posts underneath and fits the foam perfectly.

    • @bigxie
      @bigxie  3 роки тому

      @@julienmyst6590 np, and if you're using clip in stabs, you're referring to the ones that still PCB mount but just don't screw down, right? They would work with the foam as well, the incompatibility comes from plate mounted stabs that have extra height to the housing that extends up into the keycap, so some of the foam would need to be trimmed. It's not a problem for any PCB mounted stabs though, so if you are otherwise satisfied with your stabs, you can save the $25 on Durocks. Good luck with your build!

      I haven't tried the Tofu65 actually, but I think it depends what you're looking for. Do you prefer the 65% or 75% form factor? Is the Glorious' 2 year warranty important to you? The Tofu is tray mount while the GMMK Pro is gasket mount, but both will have a pretty stiff typing experience. The Tofu can probably be louder/more thockier while the GMMK Pro has a more muted sound profile. And the Tofu is a little bit more expensive, but they're essentially in the same price bracket. I think either can be used to make a really good build provided you go through the same steps (lubing switches, tuning stabs, etc.).

      One last question, I bought the Boba U4 Pearl housing (62g), do you know if this will emite a decent amount of RGB or will the pearl housing block most of it? I don't need it be glaring LED light, but would like to at least see some emitting from the caps.

    • @bigxie
      @bigxie  3 роки тому

      @@sethspring434 nice, I think with the holee mod and proper tuning, plate mount stabs are fine too. I use Durock plate mount stabs on both my NK65 builds and they perform pretty much on par with screw-ins.
      The pearl housings will block some RGB, and the brass plate will do so further. The reason the RGB still shines through decently in the video is the PC plate helps diffuse it, otherwise the U4T has a similar opaque housing and would block some RGB. That being said, I think at 100% they should still be fairly visible between your keycaps.

    Thanks for this! Are switch films the equivalent for band aid mod?

    • @bigxie
      @bigxie  3 роки тому +1

      It's a similar concept. Switch films are useful for closing the gap between the top and bottom housing of switches. Some switches have a little bit of looseness when closed which can turn into unwanted noise when typing, especially quickly. Putting the switch film in between keeps the top and bottom tight and prevents this. For the Boba U4Ts in the video, they are manufactured with very tight tolerances so they actually don't wiggle at all, even without films.

      No, it shouldn't be an issue, it's actually designed to have the stabilizer legs hit the PCB. Putting some tape or other dampening material down is really just for sound preferences. No, it doesn't. The foam doesn't come in contact with the switch or the stabilizers, all it's doing is filling out the other empty space in the spacebar to prevent the sound from bouncing around in the an otherwise open area. Will changing stabs fix sluggish spacebar? Mine doesnt want to come back up consistently.

    • @bigxie
      @bigxie  3 роки тому

      There could be a lot of reasons for this - what switches are you using? Sometimes with very light switches (i.e. 40g springs or such), you'll need to use a heavier switch for the big modifier keys, especially space. You can also remove the spacebar and place on a flat surface to check if it is warped. If warped, you can try heating it up with a hair dryer and placing some flat heavy objects on it (while on a flat surface) to try to straighten it out. Also, if you used heavy lube on the stabs (i.e. dielectric grease), then yeah, it can cause it to become sluggish.

So if you feel comfortable performing the stabilizer mods, you could just skip the Durock stabs and mod the stock ones.
