I have the same leak detector. That leak detector is sensitive and if you move it to fast or bump it it will give a false reading. That guy was a amateur and needs to know his tools. I'm glad Mike keeps his guys busy even when it's slow. Days like this you learn and observe each other. It builds a team.

We had an ancient refrig with a tiny leak, (had to fill up once a year) we tried to find the leak but failed. It just wasn't worth the time to tear into it. We really don't have anything to lose to try the Cliplight sealant. It fixed the leak, still humming along after 3 years. They're only good for micro leaks, often times they don't seal with the 1st dose.

14:55 The previous "hack" removed the shraeder valve cores and left the system open to atmosphere. If left open for 4 days or longer, will the filter dryer be ruined? Can the desiccant be dried by applying a vacuum and time, or does it never release the moisture it traps??? Probably the hack told homeowner, "your system is old, the coil is clogged, it's not efficient, your best bet is a new system." Owner said, "let me think about it." Hack believes he has lost the sale, so he sabotages the system by leaving it OPEN.

From one LI guy (sweating my ass off these days in south Florida) to another, great channel I am learning a lot... Question is it really possible and viable to be able to convert a old R22 system to LP or is that a no-no and R410a is a better conversion? My 1996 Ruud system with scroll compressor (seer12 rating). Is still in very good condition, but i fear i might have either lost some R12 or enough condenser fins down low have corroded away that my T differential is now only 15/16 degrees this summer, where it always was 26 previously. My condenser fan is running at normal speed and I feel the same blow speed out my vents as i always have.

wish we had guys like you in northern Indiana. the only thing they want here is more money, and faster. and if you don't buy a maintenance plan but you call for yearly service they charge you double. I am being trained by a guy at work that is HVAC trained and he taught me how to do maintenance and I call him when something is weird. i have called 3 different companies. each one the first thing out of their mouth is are you going to buy a maintenances plan with us. and i always say it depends on your workmanship. not a single one cleaned the A coil that was dirty because of another contractor that screwed up in my attic. if they can't even bring up that that should be cleaned or worst replaced. how can i trust them? so i had the guy i work with help me, got it clean, then he said i need to check the blower, which i am glad he did because the insulation that got into the system was in there wrecking havoc. i had to buy a new blower. but none of the guys i called to come and do service even said anything about that, mean while my number 1 complaint is i have very low air flow. well in the end i fixed it myself with help over the phone and video calls with my co-worker. Oh I forgot, one recommended i go from my 2.5 ton to a 4 ton...... house was only 5 years old, and they where the company that installed the unit to start with.... yeah funny.
    TL:DR
i need someone like you guys out here. i would rather pay someone else to do that work, then do it myself. but none wanted to do the work or even recognized there was an issue.

Heavy moisture content in a refrigerant system can play tricks. Don’t always use rule of thumb. They will humble you very quickly. This is a prime example of commission based service tech or lack of experience tech with improper training. I commend you for providing quality service to your neighbors. Minus the leak lock!

I would bet the customer will call you when it's time to change it.
I had a similar experience now I only call the company out that fixed my systems.
I had been told our 20 year old unit at our store needed to be replaced. I stopped using that company every year for 5 years they would say replace the unit it needs to be changed it's old I can't belive it's still here blah blah blah. This last year, the unit finally had a break down they apart from the normal, it needs freon I called the tech out they condemned it firs said our new t Stat was bad changed it still couldn't get it to run then finally found a broke wire reconnect it the unit came on and wires glowed they stopped there and said unit is to old unsafe we condemned it BTW it will be 10,000 for a new system. I told them no, and they also looked out. The other system newer wasn't cooling, no blower. They said he needed a blower motor, and we needed to order it.
I called another tech my neighbor recommended they came out looked at my 20 year old system said the air handler needs to be rewired I can fix it for 500 bucks and for its age the system us in good condition I wouldn't recommend changing it he also found a rusted out line dryer source of the freon leak no other leask in system I had him repair the system to this day the system is still functioning perfectly.
I also had him look at the other system that called needed a blower motor. All it needed was a new capacitor. They were able to get both systems back up and running the same day. The other system is new it was installed in 2019 new Rheem system. The other one is a 2002 Frigidaire system matched with a Goodman pancake airhandler.
I know call this new company out for routine checks and services as I feel like I can trust them not to rip me off trying to sell me a new system I don't need.
Yes, my system is older, and when the time comes, I will change it, but as long as it's still functional, it won't be getting replaced it's not a rusty pil of health Hazzard and it cools well so there's no need to change it.

@Mikey Pipes - Pipe Doctor Plumbing & Heating & Air lol sorry I know I can talk a bit.
It is nice to know replacment isn't the only option, especially when money was tight and our business needed air and I didn't have in thr budget for a new system.
I'm better prepared this time. I've set a side a budget for a new system when the time comes.
