He had to know more about it. Regarding the monks - if they could transform the key into anything, why didn't they just make it a mouse and step on it...? Spilled the blood before Glory could use it. So they had to keep the key around for other purposes.
I hope she realises she probably just doomed the Earth with that statement. An evil Hell God is trying to break really and she asks "How could it get any worse". Thats right up there with saying "no" to an evil Hell God when she asks the question "Are you a God?"
I probably missed this on my first watching, but when Tara almost accidentally sets Spike's hand on fire, it is sweet he's so gentle with her, but I come close to teary when I remember he spent over a century taking care of Drusilla, who was only slightly more lucid than Tara for most of that time
28:51 That's simple: Ben was created as a prison for Glory which means she was cast out by the time he was born - Glorys imprisonment is the same as Ben's age. According to the lore Ben is 25 which means Glory has been imprisoned for 25 years.
The way I see it is this: Glory was getting too powerful, so the others cast her out. At this point Ben was born as a normal human boy and they put her inside him so she could not manifest. Her power grew until Ben was no longer able to contain her, the first time she took over, he probably had no idea what was happening. He now knows what is going on and hates it. He wants to live, he does not want to kill Dawn, but he may feel he has to.
The show is now reaching boiling point. In Spiral, Glory now knows Dawn is The Key. Spike turning up in the RV is funny with the slit in the front window. The scenes with The Knights chasing the RV and the ensuing fight is great. The mistake of getting Ben to come to treat Giles with of course the Scoobies not aware he is also Glory. The General explains to Buffy why it is all happening, and that there is no way to stop Glory unless The Key is destroyed. When Glory takes Dawn we can see Buffy becoming catatonic with stress. The build up to the finale is superb, and it does not disappoint. Brilliant writing in S5.
The problem with running is that it isn't a winning strategy: only a way to delay losing. I don't blame Buffy for wanting to run - she's more scared now than she's ever been before and she has good reason to be.
Doing that Spell against Adam got the scoobies almost killed by the first slayer the very next episode. But I agree with you, maybe that wouldn't work either way
Mutant Enemy must've gotten a budget or they were able to piggy back off someone else's medieval set. So they have knights and horsies and armor for _Buffy_ and a whole village and castle for _Angel._ Anyway, Sofie keeps talking about a connection between Ben and Glory. Can anyone help me out and explain what she's talking about?
"Things can't get any worse" - Oh, you sweet summer child... You went and said it... No, but seriously, back in the days, nothing in the history of television could rightly prepare you for the shocking season finale.
Even Buffy implies the enjoining spell they used against Adam wouldn’t beat Glory. “We aren’t going to win this with stakes, spells or pulling out some uranium power core.”
Ben is Glory's prison. But genetically, they probably ARE siblings. When Glory takes corporeal form, she uses Ben's genetics, so yeah, brother and sister. I also wondered why the monks hadn't destroyed the key so Glory would... fade away? And the knights could stop trying to destroy it. Maybe they couldn't destroy it? I find it funny that all the reactors seem to pause it at the same moment, when they think Giles is dying and say the same thing.... "If they kill Giles i'm done/they better not kill Giles"....
"Buffy just killed a human, fyi" I noticed that too, but haven't seen many reactors point this out. Yes that was a human, and she probably (more than likely) killed him. Sure, they're in the middle of a war, but still. Not that I think it's a "huge" deal at this point (when it comes to defending yourself from an army that want to kill your sister), but I like hearing someone say "hey, he was human, Buffy is not supposed to do that!".
This Episode really Feels like a Big Buffy Movie 🎥 🍿 in Cinemax (Thank you 😉for be our Host!) Everything goes wrong and the Heroes have to run away - something they never did with the Master, Drusilla, Spike, Angelus, the Mayor, Adam or every Damon before. That is a High Position for a Supervillain 🦹♀️ in Buffy. Now your 🧠 had a lot to work with - like Buffy..
I think the timeline is the monks sent Key Dawn into the future to the strongest defender of humanity but Ben was created 20 odd yrs ago. It would make sense to try to separate the Key and Glory by time, shame it wasnt a larger gap of separation. This episode was so oppressive in its relentless action, you can totally FEEL when Buffy broke - it always makes me tear up
Re the look of this episode: the action scenes really really reminded me of "The Road Warrior" (1981). I don't know if Joss or James Contner (who directed the ep) have ever said it, but I would bet that one of them had a good look at that movie. I had the same fear that you did at the Buffy/Giles scene. I kept thinking 'they can't kill him off, too! Can they???' 😧
The key can't be destroyed. Its energy. Monks made it change form and hid it and if Dawn is destroyed the Key will just exist in different form then. What the knights want to do is more like breaking the key in half. So while Glory might eventually be able to use it she can't now. So just keep destroying the key till the limited human life of Glory's prison eventually ends. That's basically the knights plan. The way sanity works in buffyverse is that its not matter of sane being good and right and the opposite being bad. Sanity is specific perception of the world. Losing that means shift in perspective and being less bound by the laws of reality. Its like being switched to a different radio frequency. It ties into how dreams are prophetic and trance states like Buffy used can be used to see past the illusion of Dawn. Because everything about Glory, Dawn included, is something from beyond this reality. That switch in frequency means perceiving Dawn in her true form as well as feeling the effect Glory has upon the world.
They literlly explained it when Dawn found out that she is the key. They can see who she is because they are NOT mentally there. We are JADED and so focused on this world, we can't see beyond it. They can.
It’s not that simple. Willow is more powerful here than she was in Something Blue and yet still could barely find a spell to affect Glory apart from really slowing her down and causing her a few seconds of pain. Glory isn’t a vampire or a person, she is a god. Adam was also immune against Johnathans reality warping in Season 4.
Lol, no wonder the monks transferred the Key to the slayer… they looked at the Knights and where like seriously you aren’t going to update your weaponry and plan to fight Glory with swords… okay maybe we need some help.
Buffy killed that soldier, but is it really the first time she killed a human ? How about Amy's mom ? OK she's a witch, but witches are humans right ? She just turned her own spell against her and she might not be dead but trapped in a statue but she doesn't know that right ? Or, how about the zookeeper of the hyenas episode ? He might have been possessed by a hyena spirit but so was Xander and the rest of the pig eating gang. There's also those killers from the order of Teracca in What's My Line. I"m not sure the ugly guy Buffy kills with her ice skate blade is a demon despite being ugly. And how about the policewoman? In S3 ep. 2 she also technically kills her mom's friend (or she was dead after wearing that mask ?) I don't think that Gwendoline Post was possessed or technically dead after she wears the "Witchblade" too. You could argue that Bufft has killed several foes that were technically humans before.
Which major character could you stand dying and still watch the show? With all the crazy and ridiculousness in buffy, I strangely always find this episode too silly for real world reasons: There is no way a horse can keep up with an RV on an open road, especially with an armoured knight on its back. Heck, a horse couldn't even sustain a gallop at residential speed limits (50km/hr) for more than a minute or two - the fastest racehorses can avg 35mph over 1mile - after that you'd be expecting 15-20 km/hr sustained at most. An RV should be hitting at least 70-80km/hr, even in poor condition.
The key is energy, it can’t be destroyed, only converted to another form. Same a real life haha. They could have made it something less identifiable though like a tree branch or a shell at the bottom of the ocean haha
In the previous episode, Glory caught up to the Gang and because she brain-sucked Tara, Tara unintentionally revealed that the Key was Dawn to her. Now they’re on the run from her with the added complication that Tara doesn’t know what she’s doing, and so Willow has to take care of her at the same time of protecting everyone from Glory. She plays a huge part in the run from her. Both her magical powers and computer technology skills are sorely needed. She is very necessary to the predicament they are all in and is very effective at keeping everyone safe. Proving that she’s the only one really capable of doing so, while Buffy is scrambling about trying whatever she can and feeling like she’s failing because she’s ‘The Slayer’, and her duty is to defend them from Big Bads the likes of Glory. So the fact that she has to run away to do that really bothers her. She’s never had to choose flight over fight before. Her Slayer powers are practically useless compared to Willow’s magical powers in this situation. So Willow’s proving that she’s on the same level as Buffy as a warrior, if not above her, at this point in the show. And although Glory is insurmountably physically stronger than the both of them combined, it says a lot that only Willow can seem to keep her at bay. And the fact that she can do it all the while looking after Tara? That’s quite the astonishing feat for a girl who once upon a time was the damsel-in-distress and couldn’t even protect herself from a soulless vampire. Willow has grew into her innate power, for the better or for the worse, and is not someone to messed with anymore.
How come Willow is so powerful? I've thought about this, and a good explanation could be that she grew up in Sunnydale which is on the hellmouth, and she then spent most of her time actually directly right above the hellmouth. This had some influence on her powers making her stronger than she would have been. Only my theory.
That combine powers/ first slayer thing always bothered me. It was so incredibly powerful and I can't quite figure out why they never did it again . The consequences didn't seem that dire.
They didn't seem that dire because they won that time. But can they be sure to win against the First Slayer again? Probably not. Besides, with Adam, they just needed a way to reach his power core and take that out. There was a goal to reach because they knew how to destroy him. Up until this point in the season, they had no way to know how to destroy Glory. They would have risked the First Slayer for no clear goal.
OMG you almost done with season 5; well yeah i know you already far ahead on patreon, but, still, this is where im followng you. Great reaction and analysis, interesting and excitin watchin you puttin or tryin to put the pieces together. You definitly one of my fave reactors, cant wait for next 2 eps. Keep em coming
This is just a theory of mine, nothing in the rest of the show confirm nor infirm it. But I believe that the monks didn't want to destroy the key cause it may be necessary for overcoming a foreseen disaster. (I have also a theory about what it could be more precisely, but it would flirt with spoiler territory to mention it). That's why they wanted the Slayer to protect the key, both from the beast and from the Knights of Byzantium. Don't know if they ever tried to explain to the Knights in what the key could be helpful, but we can assume they did and the Knights didn't want to listen.
I think the monks knew (or at least believed) that The Key could also be used for Good. Even Glory thought so. Remember in "Blood Ties," when Dawn asks her if The Key is evil, Glory first says "totally," but then admits "it depends on your point of view."
@@DanielOrme Yes, that's one of the things that made me think about my theory. There's also the fact that we know that the key is old, but not as old as Glory. But we don't know who created it. If it's a force of good, then...
{spends time quietly sniggering to myself over various Sofie comments knowing what's to come.... like /SPOILERS/ and /SPOILERS/, not to mention /SPOILERS/!!!!}
can't it get any worse??remember the words!the bad is already here!and as for the Ben-Glory relationship, the one between Buffy and Dawn is just as weird!they call her her sister, but she's actually her daughter, because she was created from her blood, not Joyce's! the monks chose to have the memories of a sister, probably because that's the only way she would fit in easily with the Summers family. After all, Buffy couldn't have given birth at four years old, could she?
Ben is mortal in the sense that he can be killed. But he doesn't get old. He was created as a young man, centuries ago, and he remains in this form. If you don't kill him, he will live forever. He was made as a prison to hold Glory, but she eventually found a way to escape and take over him for a while.
Interesting point of view. I always interpreted it as she was imprisoned inside Ben in a way to make sure she would "die" when Ben, as human would get old and die (natural) .. Kinda like a death sentence for Glory

If the Knights of Byzantium had just sent a couple of their guys to a sporting goods store to buy some guns then Dawn would probably be dead by now.
I have no problem with Buffy killing a human in self defense. War is war and the hack-n-slash team brought it.

Willow has grew into her innate power, for the better or for the worse, and is not someone to messed with anymore.
6:22 it is nice seeing Ben fight back but it seems too little too late

On top of that Buffy implies it wouldn’t work anyway. Glory is far more powerful than Adam.
Push Buffy hard enough and threaten Dawn...and the Slayer steps aside for the killer.
You won't like the killer.
{spends time quietly sniggering to myself over various Sofie comments knowing what's to come.... like /SPOILERS/ and /SPOILERS/, not to mention /SPOILERS/!!!!}
poor buffy:( breakdown
this is the episode where Ben pisses me off
I would have to assume Ben does not realize Glory knows who the key is here, an inversion of what happens in Blood Ties
can't it get any worse??remember the words!the bad is already here!and as for the Ben-Glory relationship, the one between Buffy and Dawn is just as weird!they call her her sister, but she's actually her daughter, because she was created from her blood, not Joyce's! the monks chose to have the memories of a sister, probably because that's the only way she would fit in easily with the Summers family.
I don't know if that's true. See a later episode where a deal is involved.
@@MartinGonzalez-ke9uy But they've been around for centuries, so Ben obviously doesn't age
Gregor directly states Ben was created as a newborn & will grow old & eventually die
@@stevencolatrella3257 Oh right, i see
sorry "kill glory"
Things get worse.
Biologically ben and glory are siblings but in all reality they're not
