I got selected to recycle during a patrol phase. I eventually graduated, but then I ran into my RI who became my PSG years later. I asked him, why did I got recycle? He said no clue, just needed a couple of students to recycle. I was like WTF?!?!

I remember in 2nd Ranger Battalion it was so cold about a third of the battalion came down with frostbite while we had insanely nice winter gear that we were forced to carry in our rucks while we moved in our ultrathin jungle uniforms and jungle boots. Good times!

Great video. Lots of good tips. A trick we use in the Canadian military is invert the canteen as the water starts freezing at the surface , so when you invert your canteen it still lets you get water out of the mouthpiece and keeps the ice from clogging the opening . Also add a little salt to it ,which will also add a little sodium back into your system. You can try that when it comes to camelback reservoirs .

That is a damn good training day, right there.
You have to watch your footing, and pack another two pair of gloves, and hot water is a luxury. drink it whenever you can.
In the winter, pack extra rags and a towel or two for the machinegun. Keep it dry, clean the crap out of it with a paint brush as fast as your done with the fight. Get a couple of sandbags on the side, when you change barrels, use one of the towels on the sandbags to put that hot changed barrel on after you changed it.

Was also a Winter Ranger. Got ice in dalonaga, no snow. Got hypothermia in Florida, recycled, only snow I got was 3 days before the end in Dugway Utah! Woke up with 2 inches on top of my poncho/liner! All phases cold!!!

My habit with camelbacks had always been to blow the water out of the hose after I drink from it. In the summer it prevents the water from heating up in the hose.

Good information. They obviously do things different from when I went through. I remember going out on the last patrol of Mountain Phase a bit cold but dry. Maybe half way through the patrol it began raining and the temperature started dropping. By the time we were starting back in it was snowing. Cold? Heck yea. Florida phase started relatively warm. I think it was our second patrol that the temperature started dropping. A storm had come through on the last class dumping so much water that I was chin deep. The temperature dropped to 22 degrees. I froze through and through. They had to dust off half our squad that night with hypothermia. Oh, the memories.

Another tip for your camelback in the winter blow the access water back into the pouch. Don’t just let it sit in the hose. Doesn’t really work when it’s full but once it’s 3/4 full it definitely helps preventing the hose freezing.

You should consider a post on proper care and feeding of machine gun BFAs. I had learned the technique of carrying small vise-grip pliers and have a screwdriver (like on a demo knife) to get a real crank down on the plug and nut to make sure it seated tight in the muzzle of the Pig. Machine guns rate of fire was crucial in 1983 same as you pointed out. I also made sure to carry the M14 and flip it to auto if a Pig jammed and keep 7.62 rate of fire up while they cleared it.

My son graduated Ranger school this summer and he got poison ivy, then 2nd infection from that in the mountains that was horrible. Although as a southern boy, I'd guess he would take that over snow.

I'm not a Ranger but I do live in a cold area. In my opinion I would layer, because you can take off layers as you warm up. Then once you rest and get cooler you can relayer your clothing.
Perhaps I'm not aware of some context from Ranger school, but I'd bring warm things, because shit may hit the fan

    • @GrittySoldier

That's funny because I also use paracord during overwatch, we were tied to each other on the wrist.
Pull two times to wake up, one time to acknowledge and go on overwatch while you the other go to sleep. Three times if we see hostile forces so everyone take their positions.
Like that we didn't have to move or speak.
For the repeating order, we have a rule where I served.
We call it the 3C for Command, Control and Correct (with a bonus fourth C for Consequence if the subordinates do not obey order)
Give an order (a fire position), check if the order is understood (repeat order, roe) and apply a correction if there is an error (overwatch in X direction instead of Y).
If it's still not working, your leadership may be an issue.
At last, as you say, drink your water !
