Same! 45 years old, almost never listen to secular music. People ask what I like, because it’s a great way to get to know someone, and they’re always confused when I say silence, and long formal podcasts. Songs are powerfully distracting.

I agree 110%. Gets in the way of meditative prayer, distracts us from hearing God and feeling the nudges of the Holy Spirit. Plus when you get to know the people who are making the music now a days you'll understand why its so great at distracting us from God.

I don’t listen music much now because of the lyrics. First I was a true crime fan. Then I realized it was lots of evil people killing others etc . Now I listen to catholic UA-cam channels that gives me peace. I go to church on Sundays but after finding Catholic channels I realized I wasn’t give Our Lord Jesus Christ the time He deserves. So now I watch mass everyday , pray the rosary 📿 everyday and the Caplet everyday. I feel very fortunate my heart opened more for the Blessed Trinity 🙏

There's probably something wrong with me... but my brain's default setting is to treat the voice/lyrics like another instrument which add to the feeling and musicality but I'm not actively thinking about the meaning. I get a lot of mileage from videogame music while working. It's music basically designed to keep you engaged while your brain is otherwise engaged.

I had this exact same obsessive problem long ago when going to the gym. Almost every gym has some cool songs that makes you want to push harder, but then one day at mass the songs I wasn't even paying attention to started to haunt me. Very hard since I loved going to the gym. I obsessed about it for far too long. If you struggle with obsession (especially when it involves trying to change something that you enjoy doing), it takes a great deal of work to replace it with something else.

I listen to less music as I’ve gotten older, mainly due to how it affects me emotionally. Some music can bring me to tears, however I am merely driving to the grocery store. Lofi and music without lyrics helps fill in the mundane sometimes, but now I listen to music to relax or enjoy on vinyl. Very intentional.

I've got autism and love electronic music, but whenever I listen to it, the beat becomes the only thing I can think about. It takes me out of the present moment and distracts me from whatever I actually need to focus on. So now I reserve it for doing mindless activities like cleaning and exercise, and at other times I listen to calmer music like neo-classical and folk.

I have not listened to music for like 8 years. I mean yeah if it's on in someone else's car or the store. But in my car, it's been off. Tired of the same ol same ol. Different songs and styles, but all started sounding like the same tune or same topic. Once I paid attention to the lyrics, they were not good lyrics. Drinking, women, alcohol, parties...and that was country music haha. And as far as Christian music, ehhh....same style, same tune....got tired of it. Instead, in the car, I listen to Bible in a Year with Father Mike, think of people who need prayer, or talk to God about things in my life. Silence is rare these days....but it is in silence that we can hear God.

So I’ve become a huge fan of Nick Box and others who have beautiful ambient music, where I can enjoy the beauty of the music and my mind can think on the Lord without all the interruption. 🙂

I think i can relate to this! i struggle to listen to music with lyrics, its kind of too loud in my head and i tend to only pay attention to the song instead of the work Im doing. so i like to listen to songs with lyrics when I genuinely want to listen and enjoy it. also from when i was around 14 something i started to check the lyrics of the songs before i added them to my playlist. i still do it but with extra steps of watching the music video as well as checking if there is any article or interview of the artist talking about the inspiration behind the lyrics, all to make sure that Im not listening to something inspired by the evil.
i started doing this after i got to know that a Korean artist of whom i loved to listen once said in an interview how her popular songs are most of the time inspired by an whispering she hears when she makes music. also even when the lyrics may seem okay the music video may show you that it really means something else.
I believe that its a good practice to be mindful about what we consume.

If you think about what is the most “natural“ way to listen to music… It is in person. It would’ve probably been a war drum, a sacred song, or a communal song around a campfire.
I think recorded music has probably been terrible for the art form, and the sense of communalism that we were supposed to get from music.
It’s just my theory, but I think God had a design in mind for music, and listening to musicians and singers who aren’t there messes with that design.

Pro tip from a classical musician: Instead of "quitting music", or resorting to only a few "safe" styles, try diversifying the genres and styles of music from time to time. If you are having this obsessions with some kind of music, doesn't mean it's bad, probably means you are not feeding yourself enough kinds of music. There are many types of world music, you also can listen to different styles of classical music (Renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, impressionism, xxth century, neoclassical, solo, chamber music, orchestral music, concert band music, sacred vocal music, secular sacred music, opera...), different styles of jazz, rock, pop, metal, etc.

I understand the sentiment and probably wouldn't want my children raised on their albums per-se, but heavy music saves lives all the time. Before I had faith in my adulthood, heavy music is what kept me sane as a kid and ultimately I converted in my heart to Catholicism. I'm 56 and was a musician and played a lot of contemporary stuff. I am a lyrics man but these days, I don't know when it happened, the music just doesn't do it for me any more. I prefer reading literature and writing. This is weird because I was big into all the singer songwriters of the 1960s and 70s.

    I don't get it...
I'm a musician and I always think it's impossible to love music and be an atheist at the same time. It's pure pattern, pure meaning.
Now get a grip and put on some Bob Dylan.
    All truth is God's truth

Matt, I agree with your sentiment about music. But I do find it a little sad that I can't enjoy it the way I used to. The lyrics get in the way, where they used to be fun to listen to.

I know exactly what you mean about a song getting stuck in your head! 😖 I stopped listening to anything but gregorian chant a year or so ago. Side note: while your guest might not be consciously listening to the lyrics, rest assured his subconscious is picking up every detail.

I hardly ever listen to music with lyrics either, for me it’s mostly Classical or Jazz. When I go grocery shopping, I prefer Aldi because they don’t play music in their stores.

I understand not liking modern, "secular" music but im not sure I see the point in removing it from our lives entirely. Yeah, i get it most of it sucks, but at the same time, pop culture is called "pop" culture or "secular" music because it expresses common themes and ideas people share at the time. Also, most people don't have time to read the psalms day in and day out. Having an outlet where people can express everyday hardships, outside of not sinning, is obviously very appealing because we are BOTH body AND soul. Secular music gets it's appeal in that it is true, if not it shines a ray of light on the truth. Right now, a lot of things are obviously not oriented towards the goodness the church has to provide, so the results are obviously not gregorian chanting. But just because secular sucks doesn't mean we get to ignore it. We could just ignore, but then nothing changes; or we could listen, attempt to understand the emotional appeal of the content, the holes it attempts to fill in peoples lives, then take notes to put forward our content in creative and interesting ways. Not so much to fit in, but to offer an alternative.
TLDR: Matt Fradd is wrong because ignoring secular society does nothing to convince them they are wrong, either through argument or alternative. Ignoring secular music puts an unnecessary gap between "us" and "them," as if to imply that they are beneath us because they enjoy "lower" things.

To all the metalheads: There is a ton of metal with positive, encouraging and uplifting lyrics that could even be considered Christian. Check out As I Lay Dying and Hatebreed for example.

I can relate to Matt. Songs come to me all the time, even the ones I didn't just hear on the radio, and haven't heard in years. They come out of nowhere and it's annoying, seems somewhat malevolent.

I can only hear the music or the words. I have never been able to hear the words and the music of any song. 9/10 times I can only hear the music of any song.

I like to listen to music. I like music when I sport. I like some jazz ;ate in the evening. I like music when I have to get my home cleaned up. Music is o.k. but you need to filter it. Not all of the music is o.k....but Metallica while lifting weights...it works!!! 🙂

Interesting… I just spent the morning looking at all the bands, musicians in my lifetime that were following Christ when I had zero idea…. Like Clapton, Van Morrison, U2, Dylan I knew about, but there is way more spirituality going on there than …. It wasn’t up front, which is odd because there were no issues with the occult aspects being up front and open. Sort of the opposite of the Middle Ages maybe?

When it comes to secular music I mostly just stick to country music these days. Although there are exceptions, the lyrics are a lot more virtuous. Take the chorus from "Small Town Southern Man" by Alan Jackson for example:
"And he bowed his head to Jesus, and he stood for Uncle Sam, and he only loved one woman, was always proud of what he had."
Compare that to the filth that is present in rap and honestly even a lot of classic rock stuff.

Totally me since my conversion. I miss it but all the lyrics have to do w everything that is against our faith and morals. Christian music just doesn’t do it for me. Left w Laurie Berkner and other kids tunes for my little one.
