Sure would have made for a great subversion of expectations. The once menacing Star Destroyer, now a toothless husk being towed to its grave by the very ships it would have sent scattering in fear an age ago. It really sells to us the fact that the time of the Empire is no more.
And it would have been interesting to shoot it EXACTLY like the original Star Wars, from behind with the SD moving away from us, only to change the camera angle to let us know what is really going on. It's a shame that this was scrapped. The Star Destroyer we see crashed into the ground in the final movie is a remnant of this original opening sequence.
The Star Destroyers were from a battle of Jakku after the destruction of the second death star (as explored in battlefront 2), not from the alliance polluting random planets with unused ships which makes them look bad. The alliance were very resourceful as well, a lot of the empires capital ships were captured and repurposed so I highly doubt they would junk a Star Destroyer (even one with a hole in it) onto a civilian planet without making use of it themselves. As cool as the scene would have visually looked, story telling wise would have been horrible and kinda shits of the rebels more than JJ already has

augustbliss Cheers 😎😂🤣 You just listen to the old Pork Chop Express here now and take his advice on a dark and stormy night when the lightning's crashin' and the thunder's rollin' and the rain's coming down in sheets thick as lead. Just remember what old Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big old storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."
The battle of Jakku was amazing if we got to see it in full force. The Empire vs. the Rebellion all out?! it would be awesome! Originally the emperor had created a bomb inside the planet to wipe out all major military forces in the galaxy, but the plan failed. It'd be really cool to get a few minutes of that happenning.
It'd make sense that following the Battle of Jakku, they'd use that practically inhospitable world for a dumping site. It's already full of shipwrecks, might as well dump some more.
Adin Allen It's what TFA and really this whole new trilogy needed. We're just put into this new world where 7-9 literally serve ZERO purpose. It's ridiculous. And TLJ made TFA even worse.
Cameron Smith No, that makes no sense. You do not throw giant wrecked ships away, you tow them in and tear them apart for scrap. And not with single people pulling out parts, with whole teams of people and giant machines. And you DO NOT CRASH THEM INTO PLANETS THAT PEOPLE ARE LIVING ON, *OMG WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???!!?!?*
This is what "subverting your expectations" actually looks like. It references the OT and you assume you know what's going on until you see the humongous hole in the Star Destroyer and suddenly realize it's being scrapped.
Jarno I wouldn’t say that. I think it provides some nice world building and gives a sense as to what Jakku really is in the grand sense of the whole galaxy; a giant garbage can. Still though, I MUCH prefer the opening that ended up in the final cut.
James Webber You mean to tell me you don't remember the groundbreaking character of Max von Sydow? Weren't you intrigued about his connection to Luke and how he got into possession of the star map? You know, the very same one Rian Johnson forgot even existed?
The opening scene of the shape of a star destroyer blocking out the stars and then the stormtroopers in the transport was pretty cool. The rest of the movie is meh, but I liked the opening.
That was wonderful. A homage to the original opening scene in 1977 - with a twist. Why in the world did they not leave that in? That would have been the best scene of the entire movie.
@@MariOmor1 The difference is just, that this takes the original idea and subverts it. Whereas everything else he did was essentially a carbon copy because apparently there are no plots left in this universe other than some Skywalker killing a relative and blowing up space stations.
@@ButrzV2 It shows you that it's a dump, and that the New Republic uses it as a junkyard for old ships, which 1) as minimal as it is, it's still more worldbuilding about the New Republic than we ever got in the films, and 2) at least characterizes Jakku as something *other* than "Tatooine with a different name", which was all we got in the movies.
Holy shit, never have I ever 180'ed faster from: "This is even _more_ of a rehash of A New Ho--" to thinking: "--Oh wow, this is genuinely clever and cool".
One thing I learned from watching Star Wars fans, you will never ever be able to satisfy them, because since this is such a big fandom, the fans have already made up there minds, they have created their own stories through theories and fanfictions, it's not what they wanted, not in the slightest, and what you said about them 180'ed, I see them doing that too, the Prequels were once completely hated, and now with the new Trilogy, people are looking at them with nostalgic, wishing George Lucas was back with his "Genius" and with the Solo movie, so many people were hating it, the trailer comes out, now they are hyped.
Crimson Doodlebear fanfiction is an interesting explanation but, I think it's really because there are so many (official) books that have made a universe more compelling than these last movies. With such an established franchise I don't think it's wrong to want good movies out of it, especially what they're charging these days for tickets. Star trek mostly gave us shite and look how little we now talk about the movies.
It's a 180 because it actually IS clever and cool. It doesn't count as a rehash because this time the Republic is in charge and the Empire is a Remnant. Looking at this plainly, this is a perfect way to establish the shift from Empire to Republic in the new movies, shows that the Republic is not only an actual power, but an active one, and is a genuine parallel compared to the rehashes in the movie thanks to the context and the reversal. The issue lies in how much the film, in the end, literally copied ideas for the sake of nostalgia rather than moving past "Rebels vs Empire". If anything, this scene should've set the tone for the movie where the remnants of the Empire is trying to overthrow the new dominant power in the galaxy with Rebel tactics and the ingenuity of brilliant commanders rather than same old stuff.
vit I agree. This scene simultaneously says "we're paying homage to the original trilogy" while also saying "things are different now". Then, like you said, they could show the imperial remnant becoming a rising force to be reckoned with, bent on revenge, complete with two new baddies, Kylo and Snoke. This scene is a wink and a nod to the fans, asking them to please indulge the movie; instead, we got an unapologetic ripoff that alienates the old fans.
Apparently JJ Abrams didn’t want to use this opening because he felt it portrayed the First Order in a weak light and not a formidable force in the galaxy... but wasn’t the movie _supposed_ to begin with the New Republic in charge and the First Order primarily regarded as mere remnants of the Empire? The use of Starkiller Base to wipe out a system and destroy the capital is surely supposed to be the inciting incident that swings the balance of power in the universe to the First Order... but if the movie begins and they’re essentially just as powerful as the Empire ever was (which is pretty much how it comes across) then I feel it fundamentally devalues the end of Return of the Jedi. I far prefer the idea that the First Order were underestimated by the New Republic, who considered them nothing more than a disorganised bunch of remnants and not a viable threat. Starkiller Base should’ve simply been a hidden facility where they’d been secretly stockpiling weapons and building ships and an army (in fact, instead of another giant planet killing laser, it should’ve simply had the ability to travel around the galaxy, which is why the arrogant politicians of the New Republic don’t believe the “stories” and “rumors” of a growing army). Then, instead of the “inciting incident” simply being a big red laser blowing up some planets (boring) it could’ve been a Pearl Harbor style surprise attack where dozens of Star Destoyers annihilate the New Republic fleet while it’s docked and then obliterate the capital city and senate from orbit.
@What The.. I’ve never read them but if they’re good then why not? I mean, what if they’d simply cherrypicked the best elements of the EU novels for this trilogy in the same way that the MCU always does with all the original Marvel comics?
Too bad jj doesn’t understand space at all, all his scifi movies show he has no spatial awareness or sense of scale. He doesn’t seem to know the difference between a planet, a star or a galaxy, let alone something like the speed of light. TLJ’s space battles and storytelling also sucked for this reason. I don’t want every space movie to be 2001, but at least a little bit of effort to get the basics of scifi worldbuilding right. Scientists consult with hollywood all the time, and most of these science flaws in the script can be fixed with minimal effort, yet they seem to keep getting dumber.
I thought this was gonna just be you making fun of the movie by showing the opening scene from A New Hope, but this animation and these visual effects are really quite amazing.
I'm actually still thinking he's making fun of the A New Hope similarities. I'm glad with what we have in the film with the Stormtroopers landing on Jakku. If this was Abrams' idea I would need to know the original drafts to see why they are dropping a Star Destroyer on the planet.
No, they shouldn't have included this, for many reasons. 1. The New Republic would have much rather wanted to scrap the Star Destroyer for parts to help with building their ships. It makes no sense why they would do this. 2. This breaks the lore of the Battle of Jakku, as in the actual battle, they didn't just dump a star destroyer here for no reason, it crashed during the Battle.
@@FadedGamingLove well actually no, the battle of Jakku was one year after the battle of endor, as said in Star Wars battlefront 2015, This scene would have taken place 29 years after the battle of Endor so that explains Rey going in the ship to scavenge for parts , so while I agree with the first reason , this scene would have made sense because Jakku is a junkyard planet full of Remnants of the Galactic Civil War
@@FadedGamingLove there was no Battle of Jakku back then, the original plan was to make a scrapyard planet. Which is in my opinion much better than saying that there was a useless battle decades ago that we know barely anything about.
99% of this is really fracking great. And this is what they originally planned to do? It's a good way to pay homage to Ep IV but still be it's own thing. Was this just a one man job? Cause dang, you got talent.
They should has scrapped THIS Star Destroyer to make a Starhawk instead of scrapping perfectly good captured ones. I like the symbolism, but it's a waste of resources.
I love how this scene calls back to the beginning of a New Hope. From this scene alone you get a sense of what has happened since Endor. Nice work dude!
That’s actually a clever little nod to the first movie and shows the state the galaxy is in. However story wise I can see why they went with the other.
I find the idea of just throwing all that metal away by crashing into a planet rather wasteful, in the real world ships are broken down for the materials.
Kenneth Ferland same, I always thought the crashed ships had come from the battle of jakku. It would’ve made more sense for the ship to crash land during the battle, then cut to Rey searching it
Well in real life at times ships arnt pulled to normal scrapping yards normally when its too dangoures based apon strutral intergrity to move it so they drop it of in a place out of shipping lanes but possible to scrap at a later date
@@kennethferland5579 I think the idea is that they are being recycled there. The junk pickers strip them and sell the scrap back cheap (for ration packets). It is cheaper to do it on a planet than in vacuum of space. Though of course droids could just do it in space, but Starwars has never been particularly logical. I guess crashing it into the planet ensures it is never rebirthed by pirates or a military faction. A big wrecking yard in space would be easy to raid and steal a bunch of ships to restore our use as space station bases.
The best part about Star Wars concept material is that it always gets made. Either in the movies or spin off material, or by amazing fan projects like this. Without people like you the galaxy wouldn’t be as bright as it is
It's both. After the Battle of Jakku the Rebels, then New Republic, said "huh, what if we just dropped _more_ ships here? It's convenient." And that's what they did. It explains how Rey was able to continually find new marketable parts despite the original battlesite ships being there for decades - more were always added, like the Falcon.
Has anyone read the novel "Lost Stars"? I always assumed it was the Star Destroyer *spoilers for whoever hasn't read the book* Ciena was assigned to during the Battle of Jakku, when Thane saved both their lives
"Huh, this is still pretty similar to A New Hope's beginning, so I see why they didn't use-WHOA, THAT'S DIFFERENT!" It was just such a shock seeing that hole that it genuinely took me a moment. It looks great and genuinely might have worked in the actual film. I think maybe the only problem would be the movie's flow, as how would you go from Rey to Poe getting captured and BB-8 fleeing to back to Rey again naturally? Also, a massive nitpick, but Rey is a scavenger, likely surviving because she can scrounge up useful parts for big ship. Makes sense. ...But that's a freaking Star Destroyer! Did the Republic, First Order, whoever was dumping that ship not strip it for useful parts beforehand? That ship type was one of the prides of the Empire's military. How can there be anything left of it to dump?! There's got to be a ton of parts both the heroes and villains can make use for!
the Poe & Finn escape thing can be bridged back with proper planned dialog scene, and dumping a ISD wreck is not as unimaginable as you thought, especially for the one that dumping it is either very rich or really need to get rid of those reminding people of the rule under Empire, of course all significant useful parts would be striped beforehand.
I think Jakku has become the Republic's designated planet for scrapping old star destroyers, then sending the materials back for constructing newer Republic ships.
I mean bridging that should be to hard given that Poe's story happened at night could we have fallowed Rey till night were we see a shooting star only to learn shortly after it that it was Poe in his X-Wing and bang its bridged.
Actually, in the books, they stripped the SD's for their weapons, shields, tractor beams, to create new warships, those that could cut with the edge of a surgical knife in technology. But after the war, they discontinued 90% of their military to be more 'peaceful' (look where that got them), so the idea of them just dumping ships off isn't super unbelievable. The issue arrives when everyone hasn't read the new Disney Cannon (which, I will add, ADDED NOTHING! THEY SAID TO READ THE BOOKS TO HELP UNDERSTAND TROS, BUT IT ADDED NOTHING! Although it was interesting seeing post Endor War, the state of the Republic, ect. Ect.), so to most, if not all (as, logically speaking, they would still strip the ship down for parts) the ship being dropped off mostly whole is a bit stupid. Basically: there's a reason, but its a dumb one and not everyone would have the knowledge (based on who read the books or not) to piece the parts together.
oh for god's sake why the hell didn't they do something like this?! The feel is such a subversion of the original giving hints to how things have changed!! Brilliant work bro, you're great!
I love it. The production design is wonderful, right down the visual effects, which are impressive for amateur work, and so is the score. However, what really hooks me is the sheer amount of world building in these few minutes. Just in a few shots, we learn how much has changed in the galaxy: the New Republic is the new power in control, the Empire is long gone, Jakku is a junk planet where the galactic government drops scraps. Immediately we have two interesting dynamics: that between the Republic and the Empire, a reversal complemented with the parallels drawn to the original film, and that between the government and the people; our protagonist's lives on the Republic's junkyard and survives by harvesting the scraps. And that's ignoring the cinematography, which I already touched on bit by mentioning the parallel shots, but not only is the Lost Stars hommage beautiful, it is also very rewarding to fans of the book who know the lore behind the scene. Just there, in less than two minutes, we have potentially more worldbuilding than the final film itself. It's delectable.
I really enjoyed that book. I often listened to Star Wars soundtracks from movies to video games while reading it. Really transports you to a galaxy far, far away :)
I thought a great battle took place on Jakku, isn't that what they have shown with Battlefront? Also, it doesn't really seem like the Republic's type to blindly drop capital ships onto an inhabited planet, those things are huge they could easily destroy an entire village and kill innocent people.
The New Republic were using Jakku as a landfill area where decommissioned ships like that old imperial star destroyer will be dumped on to the planet surface .
Yeah because hero`s ditch unwanted ships on random planets for no reason .What about the people on the planet ? Why wouldn't they simply strip the ship of anything worthwhile and leave it in space ? Is ditching massive capital ships on planets part of the republics plan to win the locals over ? I can just see them now thinking "well thank fuck we didn't have to get involved in that giant space battle eh " only to have a star destroyer smash into their settlement ... WTF ?
SlychoticGamer 21 ---- The model you are refering to is the CR90 Corellian Corvette. The Tantive IV was the name of the specific example seen in A New Hope.
I love how it starts off almost identically to A New Hope's opening, before subverting expectations by showing the giant hole on the Star Destroyer. I wouldn't have minded if the film opened like this!
At first I thought, definitely no... then I thought okay I see what they were going for but it's a bit too clever for its own good... and then I thought fuck it, it's awesome, they should've stuck with it.
I was really hoping that this opening scene would have instead culminated in a 2 hour long chase scene between the star destroyer and the ships in front of it, but during that time let there be no action nor significant plot maturation of any kind. Oh and make a significant side quest to go visit a casino while you're at it.
But indeed was absolutely good, instead of giving us more rey fighting smugglers they should have show us in the middle of Rey's grabing some scratch that one scene. But if have to say something the whole plot sucks ass
The first Concept was, that Lukes Hand with his Lightsaber flys over Jakku, crashing down resulting Lukes Hand to burn and his lightsaber to crash on the planets surface, where a creature (Maz Kanata propably) takes it. Then it continues like we know.
This is great, but honestly, I feel like TFA's actual opening scene was amazing. The music, the Star Destroyer slicing into frame, and the village battle all looked amazing.
In my opinion the actual intro could've followed up after this one, seeing the stars blocked out by something hidden while scavengers swarm the crash site.
@The Cambot im not saying its comparable to the ot or prequels im just saying i would rather watch that then the other 2 sequels. its enjoyable at the least.
@Lord Bailey yeah i know that, but at least it set up an interesting world that the next two ruined obviously. and i still liked stuff about the movie, likesome of the side characters like finn and poe. and all the fan service for the ot. if only there was prequel fan service than maybe the movie would be a little better.
@@farawaygaming_ I was enjoying it..and then the death planet came into shot I the film was ruined for me. Could see from then on it was just New hope photocopied up to 141%
When I first saw the concept art, I thought this was a rip off of the opening scene from A New Hope. I was pleasantly surprised to be completely wrong. I wish they kept it in the movie, that would be awesome. Maybe Rey could have piloted one of the smaller ships, to show that she can pilot ships, that would have been cool for her character setup. Oh well... You did a great job at animating this, it looked fantastic. Thank you for sharing this.
I love how Disney cut all the original ideas out of everything. So many deleted or alternate scenes from this trilogy have surfaced and they're all brilliant, relevant or original.
Man it's crazy how even little stuff like this adds so much personality to such a creatively sterile trilogy. When people care it really shines through.
That's quite clever. Reversing the understanding that the empire is huge to "the empire was huge, now it's a husk, but the shadow of it still looms large"

Getting old is a strange thing to happen to a young boy. I still remember XWing. The joy of being blown up by a Star Destroyer that first time, the joy of learning that you *could* kill one (just destroy the shield generators) and then the habitual (even tiresome) killing of a Star Destroyer whenever possible, because who can resist killing a Star Destroyer even if it's a lot of work? It felt great being a kid. Now, it's like I'm the same person but - older. Does anyone actually have a solution to the mid-life crisis? I would like to know.
@@tomj4406 As a member of the vintage computer community, I'd have paid you for those box and disks. I mean, sure, I could always hit up an "abandonware" site and pirate a copy, but boxed sets are collectibles these days. I got lucky and found a complete boxed copy of Monkey Island 2 for $6 at a local Value Village (hiding in the board games section) a few months back, and was surprised to find that the disks were all still good! So what IBM model was it? A PS/1 2133? That roughly fits your description.
Force Awakens was a lazy copy of the New Hope, and annihated absoletely everything that came before it. I am embarrased that it is the 4th most profitable movie of all time (10th when adjusted to inflation.)
Force awakens could be arguably the worst of the three, although it’s the most palatable in the sense that it doesn’t shit on legacy characters as bad as the other two (minus Han). It’s still an uninspired train wreck with horrid protagonist development. But I’ll give you that it was somewhat enjoyable the first time I watched it, being way too nostalgically inclined to do so. My thoughts on the film immediately wore off as I came to terms with the fact that it was the beginning of the end. As bad as TLJ is, Rian made a _semi_ original film (although even that is debatable, he basically crammed a copy of ESB and ROTJ into one movie, while making it as painful and directionless to watch as possible) Anyway anything regarding the sequels illicits simultaneously hatred, pain, and nothing all at once. I don’t mind Kylo though. Having a non competent villain is a better idea than people give credit to. The problem is it was done to make men look silly, not used as a character flaw. In closing, the sequels are uninspired slaps in the face to fans, while not even pandering to the audience it was targeted for. It’s probably the most laughably pathetic attempt at cinema to date.
yeah, it's been like that with TFA and R1 too (though I think TLJ is the best of all three) - people just don't realize you need to take time and listen to them more then once to appreciate them, and at least recognize separate themes.
In the OT and PT, the score was a character unto itself. George never even wanted the dialogue to be very important. TFA and TLJ have their scores relegated to background, just like so many movies today. They barely stand out. You can't blame people for not knowing themes or paying any attention to the score. R1 somehow managed to get it's score more prominent in the mix. Ironic, since it was Giachinno and not Willaims. Another failure, and Disney playing it safe by not having music that stood out.
Pantheragem You realize that Disney doesn’t tell John Williams what to do, right? The director might have a little bit of say in the tone or mood or whatnot, but it’s all up to the composer.
so they literally towed a wrecked ISD an just dumped it on Jakku, makes sense. the whole planet is already a ship graveyard. plus i love those CR-90/GR-70 Crossbreeds.
Did they seriously just THROW away a star destroyer! All that scrap metal just... gone. Thrown to filthy scavengers stuck on their dirty desert planet. I just mean.... seriously! Do the people in Star Wars really not know how to recycle or are they just so lazy they just feel like mining new material rather than reusing old material.
Why is it when "Kill the past" is in the movie, everyone complains because Star Wars shouldn't kill the past? But when it's a deleted scene, it's a brilliant way of using nostalgic and showing us the past was killed? Are Star Wars fans just all contrarians?
Davis Parks it’s not contrarian to say that a certain level of nostalgia is ok. The issue is that the whole force awakens felt extremely similar to a New Hope and though some of it was ok it felt very repetitive. Not all Star Wars fans are the same.
@@mn8886 That's not what I'm talking about. When The Last Jedi came out, lots of Star Wars fans complained that Rian Johnson was trying to kill the past for Star Wars. It's so mind boggling to see a comment say that TFA should have had a scene to show "the past is gone"... when that was literally the exact thing people hated about TLJ
Davis Parks I personally didn’t absolutely hate the last Jedi, I just didn’t like it that much compared to the other movies for a lot of reasons. I’m not one of those people who hates all the new or something and I just thought this was an interesting way to open up the new trilogy, and by harkening back to the old stuff at the beginning it may have made it seem familiar for the audience. Just my opinion though.
I'm not sure about that... they hadn't needed to make the planet look like the one from A New Hope, but this not only a nod to the original opening scene that is then subverting expectations, but it is telling us an important piece of story: the ISD is being scrapped because it has been shot to pieces; which would make audience familiar with the universe (ie. the customer base) infer that the Empire has now been destroyed and The New Republic is in control... or at least _thinks_ so. This again would give us at least partly a justification for why they haven't intervened to find and take out the no doubt ludicrously resource-intensive-and-impossible-to-hide-from-a-vigilant-opponent Starkiller Base.
Yupp, all the people complaining about how this was cut are forgetting about all hate from people saying that Episode 7 is a rehash of 4. This scene would've just added more fuel to fire
Not really. If the battle of Jaku already happened and it was filled with many destroyed star destroyers it would only make sense to dump them here instead of a whole new planet
The battle of Jakku was created for the film and then expanded in the tie in novels. Taking it out wouldnt have been giving it the finger, it would never have existed. And to be honest the whole concept of the battle was stupid (that a year after destroying the second death star and losing half their fleet in the process the rebel alliance would be strong enough to win a decisive fleet and ground engagement with the empire over an insignificant planet that would destroy enough of the imperial fleet that it ceased to be a viable entity)
That looks great, but why would they let goe of this valuable prize like that? An ISD is something worth quite a lot, even if it's damaged! I mean we know that the Rebell Alliance used tons of "old" ships against the Empire and while they often didn't have the numbers they weren't totally outgunned when they chose to engage! Technology is pretty stagnant in that universe, so even a 100 year old ship is still a danger to a more modern one - provided they are of similar desing (so no comparing frigates to star destroyers or fighters to gunboats!)
Galactic disarmament. It was referenced offhand in ep7 and again in ep8 for why there was no one to help the Resistance, and why the New Republic had no standing or even conditional army. They were stupid, but hey, this lines up with their stupidity pretty nicely.
Man they had the opportunity to make this trilogy something special... Great work here mate. What a cool opening, an actual homage rather than a distorted copy.
At first I was like 'meh', too much like A New Hope...and then, and then, and then! That was an epic reveal of the damaged star destroyer and a logical segue into Rey as scavenger. Very nice, very nice indeed...
As cool as it was it doesn’t fit the story correctly as the wrecks of the star destroyers on Jakku were actually from the Battle of Jakku where the republic took on an imperial remnant fleet, so that ISD would already have been there rather than brought to Jakku
Wasn’t the story of the Battle of Jakku created *after* TFA to explain the Star Destroyers there? They would have just changed their explanation to Jakku being a junkyard for Imperial ships instead of a battle site.
Complaining that a *cut scene* doesn't match canon is a pretty useless complaint, Thomas. Obviously if this scene had been in the movie the backstory would have been different -- it's not like the Battle of Jakku was even mentioned in the movie.
Great work! Love it and really captivated the old feelings as an old fan with a new twist on a new trilogy! Would love to see if you could deliver more concept art into animation as well. Best of luck!
This is how episode one started out too isn’t it? Obi & Qui’s ship coming out in space, Eventually coming in to land on the droid ship?... So it would’ve just been following form for the first movie in each trilogy then right?
are these ships dropped by the rebellion or the order? cause these are rebellion ships and i don't think they are gonna drop huge ships on a planet without killing anyone

You just listen to the old Pork Chop Express here now and take his advice on a dark and stormy night when the lightning's crashin' and the thunder's rollin' and the rain's coming down in sheets thick as lead. Just remember what old Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big old storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."
Welcome young Burton, I have been expecting you.
I love the idea that Jakku was used as a dumping site. It makes sense with all the scavengers and crashed ships.
Yeah I prefer this to the Battle of Jakku tbh

I see why it was scrapped tough. it has nothing to do with the story and it's quite useless
Jarno I wouldn’t say that. I think it provides some nice world building and gives a sense as to what Jakku really is in the grand sense of the whole galaxy; a giant garbage can. Still though, I MUCH prefer the opening that ended up in the final cut.
@@ECGCblu it's good for world building but pointless for the overall story the beginning in the final cut fits much better

The start to force awakens is sick, the storm troopers in the drop ship is awesome
The start of TFA was pretty cool. Seeing the stormtroopers drop in and Kylo Ren stopping the blaster bolt in mid air was awesome.
That was wonderful. A homage to the original opening scene in 1977 - with a twist. Why in the world did they not leave that in? That would have been the best scene of the entire movie.
You know... JJ wanted to be "original" in the force adwekens🤡
Because the entire movie was already a homage to the 1977 film

Holy shit, never have I ever 180'ed faster from:
"This is even _more_ of a rehash of A New Ho--"
to thinking:
"--Oh wow, this is genuinely clever and cool".
same here :P
That was a no brainer. They should have started exactly like this.

Oh wow, okay. That was a much higher quality of animation than I was expecting. Props dude
That would be literally ripping off the Thrawn Trilogy books to the word lmao
@What The.. I’ve never read them but if they’re good then why not? I mean, what if they’d simply cherrypicked the best elements of the EU novels for this trilogy in the same way that the MCU always does with all the original Marvel comics?
@@McSuperfly101 That would be forward thinking and antithetical to the JJ Abrams style of writing.
God damn they really messed up this trilogy from the start
Golden Freddy I was expecting the exact same thing!
Lol are you having a laugh?
Lol same!!
I'm actually still thinking he's making fun of the A New Hope similarities. I'm glad with what we have in the film with the Stormtroopers landing on Jakku. If this was Abrams' idea I would need to know the original drafts to see why they are dropping a Star Destroyer on the planet.
BillXCIII Why did you copy my comment?
I first was like: Ah no, not another stolen scene from the OT’s. But when the plot twist came. They should’ve included it
No, they shouldn't have included this, for many reasons.

It would’ve made more sense for the ship to crash land during the battle, then cut to Rey searching it
It feels like more than a nod though. It's not subtle in the slightest. It's pretty blatantly almost shot for shot the same scene

What actually happened is from Battlefront 2’s campaign, where Iden takes down a Star Destroyer at the Battle of Jakku. Sick editing skills btw

@@andrewbarakos3284 True that!
"Huh, this is still pretty similar to A New Hope's beginning, so I see why they didn't use-WHOA, THAT'S DIFFERENT!"
It was just such a shock seeing that hole that it genuinely took me a moment.
No, that was there from the original battle of jakku. It's even shown on the video games and in details in books

I thought a great battle took place on Jakku, isn't that what they have shown with Battlefront? Also, it doesn't really seem like the Republic's type to blindly drop capital ships onto an inhabited planet, those things are huge they could easily destroy an entire village and kill innocent people.
Son Of Montreal Obviously if they'd gone with this version the story would've been different. That goes without saying.
One idea of an opening scene I would’ve thought about was the final moments of the battle of Jakku but this is wonderful in its own right!

...at the time..it was AMAZING! Before that, it was monochromatic monitors and pc's that could do word processing and not much else. That '92 IBM pc had 120mb HDD, 2mb RAM upgraded to 4mb..a 25mhz processor and..a 13" COLOR CRT monitor! ..and only cost $2,000.0 ahaha.
Never did play X-Wing but I did play TIE Fighter.
I saw a Verizon ad right before this and I was like "wait, the Force Awakens was going to be a huge Verizon ad?"
they changed the opening so they could do the "so who talks first" schtick
Great idea
Much classier...

Omg so this would Be you if you passed
The creativity and story world building without saying a single word. Fantastic. The shots looked amazing. Got my sub great job!
This is really well done. I want to live in the alternate timeline where the sequels kept being as good as The Force Awakens...
Force Awakens was a lazy copy of the New Hope, and annihated absoletely everything that came before it. I am embarrased that it is the 4th most profitable movie of all time (10th when adjusted to inflation.)
@@best-qg5uj copy of a new hope or not, i still found tfa pretty good
So unoriginal amd bland?
Force awakens could be arguably the worst of the three, although it’s the most palatable in the sense that it doesn’t shit on legacy characters as bad as the other two (minus Han).
It’s still an uninspired train wreck with horrid protagonist development. But I’ll give you that it was somewhat enjoyable the first time I watched it, being way too nostalgically inclined to do so. My thoughts on the film immediately wore off as I came to terms with the fact that it was the beginning of the end. As bad as TLJ is, Rian made a _semi_ original film (although even that is debatable, he basically crammed a copy of ESB and ROTJ into one movie, while making it as painful and directionless to watch as possible)
Anyway anything regarding the sequels illicits simultaneously hatred, pain, and nothing all at once. I don’t mind Kylo though. Having a non competent villain is a better idea than people give credit to. The problem is it was done to make men look silly, not used as a character flaw.
In closing, the sequels are uninspired slaps in the face to fans, while not even pandering to the audience it was targeted for. It’s probably the most laughably pathetic attempt at cinema to date.
amazing use of TLJ score
Ring of Fire fanks! It’s an underrated score imo
yeah, it's been like that with TFA and R1 too (though I think TLJ is the best of all three) - people just don't realize you need to take time and listen to them more then once to appreciate them, and at least recognize separate themes.
Ring of Fire yeh so so true
I'm pretty sure it's a GR-75 not a GR-70
Yup, my bad.
Jean-Luc Martel it does not make sense. Why would you just not send the junk off into space? Takes no effort at all.
because in space it's a navigational hazard.
Jean-Luc Martel it was pulled into the atmosphere by a downed republic ship with a tractor beam.
You even create lot of lense flare like JJ love
This is infinitely better than all three of the sequels combined.
Lame overused comment

@@user-hk7hz9cn7v same i got angry , sequels are bad but this is worseeee
Did they seriously just THROW away a star destroyer! All that scrap metal just... gone. Thrown to filthy scavengers stuck on their dirty desert planet. I just mean.... seriously! Do the people in Star Wars really not know how to recycle or are they just so lazy they just feel like mining new material rather than reusing old material.
What did the scavengers do to you? 😬
Tim Gray for real 😂😂
Well, jj abrams recycled a new hope into TFA, so does that count?
Cenotaur1 w o a h t h e r e
Maybe their tractor beam generators malfunctioned and/or they miscalculated Jakku's gravitational pull.
Amazing job. However, wasn't it suppsoed to open with Luke's hand floating in space orignally?
Thanks! You are correct but there were many opening sequences that came out of creative development, this is just one of them.
Dude... that's messed up.
DavisWOW lol wtf that sounds silly
I was just about to post that
DavisWOW That sounds badass.
I like this more, it’s more thought provoking and it plays on nostalgia while later showing that the past is gone and something new is in order.
I bet if this was in the movie everyone would be complaining about fan service
That’s the only thing mongoloid prequel and sequel fans want though.
So true
Rufus501st Actually I would be grateful for a scene like this
I'm not sure about that... they hadn't needed to make the planet look like the one from A New Hope, but this not only a nod to the original opening scene that is then subverting expectations, but it is telling us an important piece of story: the ISD is being scrapped because it has been shot to pieces; which would make audience familiar with the universe (ie. the customer base) infer that the Empire has now been destroyed and The New Republic is in control... or at least _thinks_ so.
Subscribed because of this. You should use your skills to make a fan film!
Alex Soetekouw productions I have, check my videos
Tim Gray nice!
Please, don't. Fan films are the plague of the internet.
Good thing they took this out, that scene would have been a big middle finger to the Battle of Jakku lol
Not really. If the battle of Jaku already happened and it was filled with many destroyed star destroyers it would only make sense to dump them here instead of a whole new planet
@Kato Ho Ten Soeng thats what jakku was
@@MrSwitchblade327 not really. A scrapyard would be where they bring derelict ships and dismantle them for materials. Jakku is just a graveyard
That's fine, the entire concept of Jaku is stupid as hell. Oh look, yet ANOTHER messianic hero raised in a desert wasteland on planet Not-Tatooine!
DreamingFlurry It literally has a giant hole in it meaning that it was probably damaged beyond repair
Plus its a reference to WW2s aftermath. Lots of warships had a similar fate
Because we literally do this with multi billion dollar ships. (Google beaching ships for scrap) You make more money scrapping it than repairing it.
More elegant than most of the rest of the movie...
No please stop to destroy this movie
This would have been a brilliant reverse twist on A New Hope's opening scene!
Why don't you have more subscribers!?!? This is fantastic!!! ❤️
That. Would have been great. Deserves a medal really. 💫
At first I was like 'meh', too much like A New Hope...and then, and then, and then! That was an epic reveal of the damaged star destroyer and a logical segue into Rey as scavenger. Very nice, very nice indeed...
This is really cool, but I can see why it was cut, because it doesn’t really matter, and the fight on jakku was a lot more exciting
Ur grammar is hurting my brain 🥺
Electrø 43 welcome to the internet
Electrø 43 Says the guy that uses “ur”
As cool as it was it doesn’t fit the story correctly as the wrecks of the star destroyers on Jakku were actually from the Battle of Jakku where the republic took on an imperial remnant fleet, so that ISD would already have been there rather than brought to Jakku
They would probably have brought it there because of the amount of wreckage already there, instead of cleaning up they would just add more to it
@@ninjajedi0462 The New Republic probably would have scrapped the star destroyer to use for parts, not dump it on some planet.
@@FadedGamingLove that’s a good point, I hadn’t thought of that
Wasn’t the story of the Battle of Jakku created *after* TFA to explain the Star Destroyers there? They would have just changed their explanation to Jakku being a junkyard for Imperial ships instead of a battle site.
Complaining that a *cut scene* doesn't match canon is a pretty useless complaint, Thomas. Obviously if this scene had been in the movie the backstory would have been different -- it's not like the Battle of Jakku was even mentioned in the movie.
This makes so much more sense. Well done.
Great work! Love it and really captivated the old feelings as an old fan with a new twist on a new trilogy! Would love to see if you could deliver more concept art into animation as well. Best of luck!
Nicholas Nelson watch this space
I love it, but as an intro? Idk. I think that would be introducing Rey way too early.
This is kinda copying a new hope but it still would have been a better establishing shot than what we have so far.
Its not copying, this would have been a proper homage and subversion of expectations
This is how episode one started out too isn’t it?
Obi & Qui’s ship coming out in space,
Eventually coming in to land on the droid ship?...
So it would’ve just been following form for the first movie in each trilogy then right?
The whole movie as it was originally released was mostly copying a new hope anyway. Might as well do it this way but with a little twist.
it's meant to reference the opening scene of a new hope.
@@roguechlnchllla6564 thats why I said its a homage.
I've always wanted to know how those Star Destroyers got on Jakku! Thanks for this cool concept!
Only issue I have with this story concept is it doesn't make sense to dump ships on a planet. It would be more efficient to salvage them in space
This is why everyone wants to go back to Jakku
are these ships dropped by the rebellion or the order? cause these are rebellion ships and i don't think they are gonna drop huge ships on a planet without killing anyone
I'm binge watching the whole saga now. This clip was all I needed
Disney saga sucked joe Biden dick.
Lol I was expecting you to just play the opening to Episode 4. Very well done!
Rey’s scavenger outfit still makes her look like a goofy version of a Ninja Turtle.
Amazing! I am surprised that you don’t have allot of subscribers.
Me too...
I subscribed!
You should have added “years later” to Rey opening the hatch
That was a cool scene and massive call back to the first movie...
This would have been so appropriate as an opening for the sequel trilogy. The corpse of a once mighty vessel being tossed out to be picked apart by opportunist scavengers.
That is SUCH a better way to open the movie.
Don't even worry about the locals. I'm pretty sure there fine
Way better than the actual sequel trilogy. Great job man
