@@genesisoromight be because the original is one of the best songs of all time lol. When you do a 'negative harmony' song, melody often doesn't work as well as the original, so that's the most probable reason.
Yeah, I strongly prefer when he actually sings versus the ones where he pitch shifts the original vocals. It's nice hearing something that sounds like a human rather than a weird robot version of a familiar singer.
I agree, this one and SOTR. Many are very interesting but the only one which was able to remain stuck in my mind is the post apocalyptic Somewhere Over The Rainbow.
The sheer amount of hard work put into this is incredible - the planning, the singing, recording and mixing. And wow, some of these riffs are lovely. And the 'rain down' section is something else.
What's great about this is that the eeriness of the original is still here but it's understated and implied, which makes it , in my opinion, fit the theme of the song better(though the melodies and the emotion work better on the original).
Very GRUNGE rock. From my POV most instrumental parts sound almost identical to the original! The vocals are *no more* depressive / *desperate* but instead *they became bittersweet* / sweeter (even if still a bit creepy). The last part sounds different but as beautiful as the original.
Many of the covers in this channel are interesting, but the only one which was able to remain stuck in my mind is the post apocalyptic Somewhere Over The Rainbow, in fact I still remember it and sing it. But this Paranoid Android is interesting too and maybe the most unexpected.
The crazy thing about your covers is that not only you go through all the work of doing them in negative harmony, but also that the instrumentation itself sounds amazing, and not a lot of people are able to achieve that when doing covers of just regular songs
Not saying this is easy to listen, but very interesting to listen for sure. First 6 seconds loop could actually be an intro to lots of songs, in the major key it sounds calm and ordinary.
Steve Cruickshank: Listend to all of your Vids now in a binge and saved myself up this one to close my journey. I really love what you do and will listen to your Versions alot! Can't tell you how lucky you make me, thanks!
I know "this sounds like weezer" is a not uncommon refrain in your comments. But these vocals have a very distinct Rivers Cuomo kinda sound to them like for reals. Great work putting this together
Am I alone in thinking that from 5:06 - 5:45 there’s a definite similarity to the Beach Boys during their Surf’s Up period? I’d love to own an album of all these negative harmony covers.
Love these! Also, I love your voice. This is easily one of my favourite covers of yours, same level as sound of silence, over the rainbow, knives out and the only decent version of wonderwall in existence.
I have been giggling to myself at the level of talent and work that must go into this. Utterly fascinating. Now we need to find a way to invert not just the sung tone, but the lyrics themselves...
Oh wow I LOVE this. The whole thing just works so well. Wonderful note choice in both solos. The overall mental image it makes for me is The Autumns self-titled album mashed with with Weezer's Pinkerton, with added prog spices. LOVE IT.
Imagine negative harmony as negative flavor. Toothpaste becomes more like lemon juice. Some things are too much. Incredible effort as this was, I feel like I have to go rinse my mouth out with some real paranoia now.
Radiohead: writing a great song. Thom York: let's make it negative. It will sound gloomy and no one will guess. The Internet is starting to make negative covers. Thom York: Fuck...
It's really fascinating how walking up the scale instead of down to lead into the "you don't remember" part effectively makes the energy build up more gradual, but it still feels sort of disjointed.
the choruses in the intro have an interesting progression: F7-Ebadd9/G-Abm6. the transition from that back to the verse is Abm6-C, which is an interesting resolution, because the tritone within Abm6 is the same tritone in G7 (B and F, or technically Cb, but i don't care). the tension is similar as well, the Ab resolves to G, the B resolves to C, and the Eb and F resolve inward to E. with G7, the G is shared, B resolves to C, F resolves to E, and D resolves to C or E depending on the voice leading.

radiohead if they took their anxiety meds
I think this works really well on Radiohead because their songs already sound like a negative harmony cover of a song we never got to hear.
I think it still sounds weird and unnatural to listen to. Compared to this cover, without being disrespectful to steve, i prefer the original
And that song is by weezer

I think dude just has a *very* Rivers Cuomo sounding vocal tone.
