Tom and I ventured out on a cold and windy morning in December 2018 in the hope of photographing trees in the drama of a snowy blizzard. It wasn't to be, so we archived the footage with the intention of returning one day. 5 years later and a last minute decision to meet-up, and we were rewarded with a stunning morning of frost, snow, fog, and an eerie, enveloping stillness.

I didn't realise that the Krampus tradition is also practised in Scotland. I only knew it from southern Germany and Austria

When I saw the Krampus of 2019, I was thinking to myself "Woah that's a great image" and now tha t I saw the 2023 version I feel like the new one is way better . Congrats!

I think I prefer the 2023 version of Krampus for one reason. The top has grown and become bigger which makes it appear more domineering.

I enjoyed this video. I was feeling a little grumpy today and the moment I saw Meg, she snapped me out of it! There is something about dogs, they really are special. They can perform magic! This calendar… are some of your photos in it as well?

That Krampus image you took this year and back in 2019 is so cool, yes I did ponder on the word I would choose to describe the images and I decided on "cool" 😜 but the image also has a mystic feeling which goes along with the Krampus tale. I like that you called the trees characters in your photos, you and Thomas seem to have very similar tastes. 😎👍
It's funny, I see something completely different in the two trees. I see an aging old man, seeking to lean on the younger, still stronger man while trying to keep his balance with his other arm, which is now atrophied to the point of being useless. Thank you for a nice video and Merry Christmas.

Hi new subscriber. At last another photographer that takes the dog out, I was beggining to think I'd made a huge mistake and my photography would be over but seeing it's possible to take the dog I'll continue. I have one dream when I start exploring in April....to be someone. My dream is for a well known photographer to ask me to photograph with them. I'm not too bad as an all rounder coming runner up in a large amateur wildlife of the year competition so who knows. Great shots Simon. Happy New Year.

Lovely video Simon..I initially thought the Whitby footage was just a normal group on a Baxter/Heaton workshop ! Easy mistake to make ! Love the subtle changes over 5 years in Krampus and looks like still new growth towards the top so hopefully more return visits for you to come. I really miss my Scottish trips with conditions up there sometimes just like nowhere else and as usual you've captured that beautifully. Have a great Christmas

I don't think I'd considered the tors of Dartmoor as my friends until you mentioned how you consider some trees as friends. That's really got me thinking! Beautiful photographs and I really enjoyed watching you capture them. 🙂
What a beautiful landscape.
I remember bumping into you that day Simon at the car park. I got one of my favourite images the following morning, following some flurries overnight. Sadly the Silver Birch that was between the trees that you were shooting and the larger birch back towards the road is no longer there. Hope you are keeping well.
Hi Steve! Ah yes, I remember seeing a few years back that a gamekeeper had drilled a huge hole into the base of the birch's trunk to kill it off. I was fuming about that as it was beautiful tree :-( There was lots of birch regen which has been removed too.
the Krampus, part 2, is a very powerful photo! I think I like this version better than the first composition. The trees afterwards are so sweet, they look like taken with an infrared camera. It's looks like almost black and white, but just almost, I can see some faint colors that make the photos so smooth. Or it's my screen or my imagination ;). Thanks for another nice video. Cheers!
Many thanks! Yes, I can see what you mean about the infrared look. I've tried preserve the natural colour which was quite monochromatic with a hint of blue :)

Hi Simon. I always find this transitional period between Autumn and Winter a difficult time for woodland photography and tend to spend time scouting rather than taking images. As always, your video has provided much needed inspiration (and definitely some motivation !) so a big thanks from me for sharing. Hi Simon, absolutely beautiful photos and wish you a Happy New Year. Btw, when I took a look at your gallery "Through the woods" (amazing), the photo named "Forest Bathing" caught my attention. It appears due to the forms, shapes and shadows on the bark of the stem it gives one the illusion of seeing a face on the stem. Cheers'n best regards from Munich.

Krampus Pt 2 (aka Krampus Attacks) was quite beautiful.
Beautiful and so surrealistic shots around 2:45 .
Would fit in e.g. Blade Runner 2048 without any edit.
It would be great when you under expose the shot and light paint the first tree with a strong led light and use long exposure time, just a thought.
