You nailed this. Senku's "super power" is his maturity. He knows that he doesn't possess any special abilities that would make him objectively superior to anyone. Yeah, he's a super genius, but anyone could learn what he knows if given the proper time and training. Senku, also realizes his limits. He's a physical wimp. But, instead of reviving a powerful soldier to conquer the Stone World, he revives an invincible pacifist to help with survival and benign experimentation to recreate society.
Senku is my favourite for his honest straightforward attitude but also with how he never fails to be human by displaying every emotion from sadness to happiness. Not to mention how he inspires everyone to achieve what they are capable of
I agree that Senku is best written protagonist. One of the reasons I love Senku so much is the fact that he is a ,,smart character" but not right away cliche jerk smart character who looks down on people because they are stupid. I'm really happy that even if Senku is clearly smartest person, he still enjoys being social with people. Of course he also enjoys working alone with things but he doesn't mind company. He is also always up for explaining stuff he is doing instead of just saying ,,You wouldn't understand anyway". He shows all possible emotions. From sad, angry, frustrated to happy. I think we only didn't see jealousy in Senku. Maybe only close moment to jealousy was Tsukasa on ,,death bed" picking himself, Chrome and Taiju for space mission and not him but it also looked more as realization moment that while he can know everything about space, his body can have a problem surviving in space. That's another great thing about Senku. Even if his body is at disadvantage he still finds way to beat people stronger than him. He also isn't afraid to ask someone to protect him with their muscle power. He doesn't go thinking ,,This isn't manly". He goes more ,,Fighting is their thing so I will let them shine in their thing". That's another great thing about Senku - he brings out the best in people and help them see their true potential. It's even crazy how he doesn't thing high of himself to point that he would easy give up life for others. He is literally the most important person that needs to be protected at all cost but he doesn't see himself like that. I also like how Senku is mature to point of drinking ,,Respect women juice". Sadly most of protags goes stupid around women or look down on them or flirt in horrible way and freak out over woman in swimsuit. Senku does none of it. He respects women and thinks of them as equals. Dr. Stone is actually really good in showing that women are also badass in both fighting and crafting. It's also bad when protags are crybabies. Senku isn't. He literally cried just once and in reasonable situation - after he lost his father. That brings me also to point that Senku has literally best anime dad as well. Usually parents are just missing in life of protagonist. Byakuya made sure that Senku will develop interests fully. Even in end of world situation he still made sure to leave Senku something that will help. He also left extra things that would be helpful to Senku later. Byakuya in his ways was still present in Senku's life. Senku is also person with good morals. Yeah he messes with people but he doesn't do in in harmful way. I actually think that there is another category that makes protag great - Having power to be great protag and great villain at the same time. I mean Senku is so smart, charismatic, sometimes manipulates people, brings out their best. Nobody can't convince me that Senku wouldn't be one of the scariest and greatest anime villains. It's also power of point that Senku could easy take over the world but he chooses not to do it. It's hard to even pin point if Senku had low moment in story beside Byakuya's death. Close to that was being shot but even then he showed his power as a leader who gives out instructions even while being in horrible pain in bed.
Honestly senku is already one of my favorite shonen protagonist together with joseph joestar and denji from chainsaw man so i don't have that much to add here but i just have to say i love how senku isn't just the worlds nicest person and isn't against deceiving people to reach his end goal (well except for everything related to science). So I think it's much more interresting watching him than someone who always just does the nicest thing possible in every situation
Personally senku is one of my favorite protag in all of anime. I love how he has a lot of negative surface level traits while hiding his more tender emotions. But most of all I love how senku fully acknowledges his weaknesses and as such relies on people to pick up his slack and even encourage his friends to learn more. Most of all though I love how he’s a humanist in a way that matters, he truly believed humans can obtain any goal with enough hard work because he believes so strongly in the scientific proof of that. I don’t think senku is the best since that’s subjective but in my eyes he really is amazing and resembles some of the best humanity has to offer.
I finally caught up and I'm blown away by some of the new plot points and new characters I met along the way also new pfp looks gucci reminds me of Ryusui
This was well put together video essay. You stated your argument, gave definitions, and went through things point by point with significant examples. There was even a part where you addressed an easy counter argument about character progression & growth, that I was gonna bring up, and I think you convinced me to an extent that, at least for a Shonen protag, growth is no always significant. Very impressive work. Also it’s anime only friendly too. In terms of favorite manga protagonist, I would give it to Eren Yeager atm. The main reason has to do with his overall character arc. I really like characters who have multiple stages of growth on their journey. Other examples include Ken Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul, Yuichiro Hyakuya from Seraph of the End, and even Bam from Tower of God. Granted I usually have concerns of where the character ultimately ends up but that’s a whole other discussion. How I was taught to write stories was to use character development from some flaws as the central focus. So that’s where that bias comes from. But while I may argue that characters like Yuji from JJK have better character arcs, other aspects of Senku does make him a better protagonist. (In this specific example how he drives the story) May as well take a moment to address the thing I like about Senku as he is definitely one of my all time favorites. You covered most of the core elements so these are mostly preferences. First is moral ambiguity. As much as Senku shows the best of humanity, he’s not afraid to express selfishness or manipulate people to achieve his goals. Makes him feel more realistic than the always righteous types. Plus when he teams up with former enemies it feels more natural. Second, he’s a smart character done brilliantly. Having smart MC’s is not uncommon. In fact many of my favorites do fall under that umbrella (Light Yagami, Yang Wen-Li, etc). But a lot of their plans are quite complicated and usually all go according to Keikaku (had to do it) because they are so smart. Senku breaks everything down, explains things throughly, and still runs into road bumps constantly. Things do still ultimately work out for him but it’s nice to see him earn his victories through a process of trial and error rather than a planned simulation. Third, he’s consistently amazing. This next part may seem a bit contradictory to my last paragraph. There’s times when characters do things that seem out of character. Sometimes the rational is they are in a different place mentally then they once were but that’s not always apparent. Subaru from Re Zero who mainly comes to mind with his character being very all over the place as the story goes on. But even with many other popular MC’s, like Deku and Denji, I’ve had moments where I needed to do some mental gymnastics to understand the actions/reasoning/mind set of the protagonist at certain moments in time. Never had this issue with Senku. Tl;dr Incredible work on this video. Love the structure. My own preferences for MC’s include multiple character arcs, moral ambiguity, and high intelligence. Senku does that last really well and first not so much. But the character consistency that brings does make up for it to a good extent.
All according to keikaku always gets me, so ten billion points for that one. And thanks so much for another thoughtful comment. So happy to hear you really enjoyed this video. It’s something I’ve wanted to articulate in a video for awhile, specifically towards people who might not realize just how great Senku is. I did my best to offer a thorough discussion without making the video longer than usual. I also love Senku’s unique traits like his moral ambiguity, but those are the kinds of things I’m saving for the eventual Senku analysis video. Also, Eren is a great pick. If this was a longer video, definitely would have thrown him in here too along with the big three.
Senku is honestly the most realistic MC I’ve ever seen in Shonen manga. He doesn’t stick to one personality trait. He reacts to his environment and the events therein. Senku is the basically the most overpowered protagonist I've ever seen by far. The guy is NOT only an unmatched scientist, but also the same kind of engineer at the same time. He makes countless things out of freaking bamboo and string that somehow manage to stay together over long periods. This in a world in the dark ages makes him the most overpowered protag after maybe Saitama. The guy literally makes a cell phone in said dark age... I fail to see how people think that's smart writing. I couldn't watch anymore after about halfway through season 2. Such over the top ridiculousness and non-realisticness in a series about "science" just couldn't work for me. For this same reason I'm not as big of a fan of FMA as most, but at least FMA is about a fictional and more magical type of science so it gets much more of a pass for me.
Senku isn’t overpowered in the slightest. He is a genius but has no stamina, strength or coordination. His abilities are balanced by his lack of skill in just about everything else. And save a few small moments, the world of Dr. STONE is realistic and consistent with the natural laws of the real world.
@@ShonenOuji No it's not. Have you ever heard that no one person knows every step in the process to make a pencil? This insane freak takes completely raw materials to perform every single step in the process to make a cell phone, which has to be many several times more complicated. The very basic concepts of the science are there, but unfortunately the world is a million times more detailed than that. It's not realistic to make engines out of bamboo and for them to stay together for more than half a second. Yet the engineering aspect is NEVER even remotely discussed that I saw. This show could have worked a lot more if he also had some crazy genius engineer friend that survived as well I'm addition to the raw materials worker from the village. Like Einstein didn't actually physically make or even directly design the atomic bomb after developing the basic science. They're EXTREMELY different bodies of knowledge. But in this series as it is, what is stopping this guy from making heat seaking nukes? In the dark ages that's massively more overpowered than every other shounen protag except for arguably the ones that are overpowered as a joke such as Saitama. Though I find Deku's overpoweredness to actually be even more of a joke... Or at least a more elaborate one. I usually would find more elaborate jokes to be more funny, but I really do not get the impression it's intentional.
@@Hatchumosc1 This simply is not true. Senku never makes an engine out of bamboo. He has a steam engine forged and explains how it works right away. You also claim that the science behind building a cellphone is more complex than what's shown in the story but fail to explain how that is the case. Again, Senku lists each part they need to build their cellphone, and the process takes an excruciating amount of time before it finally comes together. If you do not like abnormally smart characters then that's fine, but please do not claim the story is unrealistic without giving it due diligence.
@@ShonenOuji He explains very very generally how it works scientifically, but not very detailed and not from a design and engineering perspective. Maybe I got the engine mixed up but he definitely makes all kinds of insane horseshit out of bamboo.
@@ShonenOuji He lists every part they need for a cell phone? Lol, it's just the main concepts behind it... Are you really that stupid? Open your own damn cell phone... It has many many more parts to say the least. That takes an entire corporation (really several different companies) of extremely smart people in many many different fields beyond just science to put together from raw mother f*king materials. I'll say it again, Einstein did NOT physically make the atomic bomb. They're extremely different knowledge sets. I'll also say again, with this style of writing he could very easily make heat seaking nukes. How would that not be a joke? When does it become a joke? Well the cell phone at the very least was obviously way passed the line.

"young" character
But.....can he beat Goku tho? 😌

Lol just jokin....tried to troll and failed 😂
He's literally the worst but ok
