Hope you enjoy this extra little nerdy video. I wanted to upload high rez versions of the charts but the resolutiion I needed to make the names visible was crashing my computer. I will try to figure something out and put it in the description. I kinda want to make some short follow ups on main channel videos because I have a lot of cut footage, let me know if there is something you are interested in.
Hey man we don't mind the tangents, we're One Piece fans, the type of One Piece fans specifically who'd watch a whole video about a chart. It's safe to say we're all nerds here who appreciate tangents and ramblings, so you didn't need to cut the Rayleigh part out (unless if you're looking out for non fans or newer fans getting spoiled or something, which is a fair concern).
my main channel is more about stats and stuff and while i made a video about anime its not exclusively about anime. I expected that this video would only be viewed by them so I wanted to keep it short but its getting way more views than I was expecting it to haha
Thank you :) I'm really not very good at programming and especially python. Usually im just looking for something that im interested in as motivation to learn to use python
Oda been big braining us. This is the One Piece!!! All jokes aside I thought it's really cool that graph you plot actually formed like a piece of ripped paper. Also reminds me of a vivre card. It's like poetry everything kinda rhymes back together.
for the past week I've been working on building a spreadsheet with similar information about every single character because im trying to make a wordle clone about guessing one piece character's based on their statistics and attributes. However for my method im filling out the data by hand, but ive gotten around 400 characters in with 11 different attributes for each character so seeing this pop up at the same time im working on my spreadsheet was really interesting. If you have the spreadsheet file up for me to look at I'd love that as it would help me a lot with tracking down the especially minor characters.
This is awesome. Are you able to do this but with chapters? I know the wikia has character appearance data for the chapters as well. It would be interesting to see if there were any big differences?
it's totally do-able but a bit harder because the chapters wiki pages are not as easily formatted (its segmented into bits and the number of bits is not the same between pages). I might do it in the future, I 100% agree it would be interesting to compare!
Also the curve telling a story that only fans of the show will recognize is super cool. I know very little about one piece but hearing what was going on in the story based on a pretty abstract graph is awesome Data analysis my love ❤️❤️
oooh imagine if this was manga based and it included cover stories, we’d even see characters like Enel coming back This was a cool project to look at! I love nerdy stuff like this
For the love of god, please, that first graph, the ones with circles and lines linking them, how do you did it? I really want to do something similar with a theme I want....
as in how did I animate it or how did I make it? How I made it is detailed in the main channel video linked in the description, but how I animated it was still just using some blender code I wrote to link nodes based off character interactions
you are just like me, going into a 3 minute long tangent about how rayleigh is such a goated character, i literally did that exact thing talking to myself like 2 hours before watching this
What a lovely video that must have taken a shitload of work! How about doing a faction-specific video next? Imagine a video that plays over time with bubbles popping up over time. The bubbles could just be outline of their known maximum size that get more-and-more filled as time flows by and more characters are introduced that join that faction. I think it would be very interesting to see which big factions appear early, how many little ones are all over the place, and so on. Additionally, it might be fun to try and do something somehow with the Timeline page of the One Piece wiki to show the chronology of the story in a different manner. This wouldn't be as automatable, but you might be able to draw some interesting parallels by showing an animation of known characters as a function of One Piece time shown as either a constant or a more logarithmic pace. (Since 99% of characters would be getting introduced over the course of just a few years of story. xD) I think it would be awesome to see events like 'creation of the Poneglyphs' and 'a little girl asks two giants an innocent question' plotted out against 'Laboon left behind at Twin Capes' and 'Roger becomes Pirate King' and 'Roger dies'. One Piece has so many flashbacks and historic events that I feel you could do something really interesting with this.
This my secondary channel so I'm not sure what I'll do here exactly. I dont want to do one piece / anime exclusively since it would take time from the main channel but your comment did give me an idea I really want to try and I think I might do ^___^
This graph is also essentially a Cumulative Record graph (more often used in the ABA field or to potentially track how many words a child has learned for example) if we look at just the Y axis being # of characters and X being # of episodes
As someone said, I'd be really intrigued to see what it looks like with Game of Thrones. Since episodes are much longer than anime i'd expect not many blank spaces except for deaths
@@notdavidsecondary9958 I might also help with imposter syndrom or simulere filings of pressure. We all want to make something that is better than what we did the last time. So it might be "easier" to upload on a channel where the perceived expectations are much lower. 🤷♂ Also it is good for obsessive viewers like me that just cannot stop asking questions. 😂
this is also exactly what I was thinking as well. Part of the reason the anime network video took so long was the stress of trying to find a topic that would 'beat' the previous one(s). Maybe tmi but having it "flop" is actually kind of a load off my back bacause I feel so much less stress about the next one. But also I really like the size of my channel right now -- I like chatting with viewers and right now its a great size where I can still do that. Eventually there will be a day where there will be no one commenting or too many people commenting so I'm enjoying this goldilocks period :)
@@notdavidsecondary9958 I get that. The wiki link video did very well. I cannot predict how a video will preform in the algorithm. The wiki one is a good video and the topic is fun. But I thing the youtube network and the friendship vides are better videos. 🤷♂ The UHMM video is also good, most people can relate and it is just fun to see what you found. But I don't understand why that one performes so well. I still hope the friendship video will be discovered by the algorithm, I still think that there are a lot of people that would love that video. And it still gets thousand of views every day. Maybe some anime channel will recommend it to people one day. 🤞🏼 I get that, many channels gets thousand of comments every day and some a lot of hate. But I don't think yt comments are a good way interacting with people. I think it is best for just a fun short comment and some thumbs-up. I guess that is way so many channels have a patron, discord, bluesky, reddit etc. where it might be easier to communicate. Also "no one commenting" or "too many people commenting" are far from the only options 😂. In my experience the creator breaks long before the "no one commenting". Honestly I don't like going through my sub list anymore. Cause half of the channels are dead now and I have no idea what heppende to there creators. I just hope they are well. Having "the algorithm" decide once fate cannot be good for ones mental health and some creators tries everything all the random tips and tricks (shorts, posts, poles, thumbnails, unlist etc.), and blame themselves as if the algorithm is the ground truth. Refusing to accept that luck can play a huge role. So please don't fall in that trap, my (useless) suggestion is to keep letting your passion and curiosity be the driving force and don't spend much time looking at video stats and performance.
haha for sure and 'chatting' was probably the wrong word on my end -- I just meant when people bring up an interesting point or question and give me ideas for new ways to present it or analyze it. There's a lot of smart people in my audience :)
3:14 guess he will make a 3ed channel, where he uploads the long versions of the second channel addendum videos for the main channel. Maybe a 4ed channel showing how he scrapes wiki/imdb using python, manipulate the data and use python to generate the plots in blender, before rendering all the cool animations (camera shots) 🤷♂️ 😂
literally watching totally not mark right now. My main channel is called Not David and this one was just 'not david secondary' until yesterday and thought I just needed something else. Then while at a holiday party I was like "wow I just ripped off Totally not mark" hahah.
Is panda man on the list? I don’t often browse the wiki’s episode list so I don’t really know if it would include him since he mostly is in the background and isn’t mention in story. (Besides that one case on the poneglyph in Alabasta) and if it does I wonder how accurate the graph/wiki is with the information.
I'm not sure if it would work anywhere near as well but the Pokémon anime on Bulbapedia would be an interesting one to see 👀 You could do one for reoccurring characters and one for Pokémon as a species.
pokemon would be cool to do actually yeah, it would look so different. I suspect it would look a bit like jojo except more empty and with ash going through the whole thing. Might give it a shot
Yes! I wanted to before I put out the video but it turned out that the resolutions I'd need to go to to make the names visible was crashing blender. I'm going to look into how to do it tomorrow as I have plans for tonight, but worst case scenerio I was going to upload the blender file (not ideal since you'd have to have a bit of blender knowledge to use it well)
This one of those things you'd have to naturally like it from birth and not an acquired taste lul unless you get talk no jutsu into for money , which doesnt work on me
I have only dipped my toe into One Piece, but it got me thinking maybe Game of Thrones would be an interesting show to do the same analysis. I too have only dipped my toe into Game of Thrones. Thise videos makes me realyse that I might not like shows with too many characters 🤔
My experience with GoT is very limited but I also thought at one point it could be interesting. Actually, I cut this for the main channel video, but I did do simpsons as a comparison. I cut it because something with the way the fan wiki was structured was introducing some problems in later seasons (I don't remember exactly what the problem was). It was also different in that the fan wiki listed 'main characters' of each episodes and not neccesarily all characters. I actually think that could be useful as a curated 'ground truth' but it had enough differences to make me not want to include it. Maybe that could be an interesting side video as a comparison?
@notdavidsecondary9958 simsons is interesting. I have not watched much, but it seems like they are always in the same town and they have many repeating characters. I also have convinced myself that shows with >100, 20 min episodes are better for this type of analysis than 40-60 min episodes. Maybe shows like friends and how I met your mother could work. But there are not that many characters so maybe it won't be as interesting. Maybe buffy the vampire slayer, there are a lot of different characters from season to season and they come back again and again. Also the relationships change over time. Or maybe you could solve "death note" using graph theory. Honestly the possibilities are endless. I think that is why it is such a good video. It just makes you think. Maybe we should think of a show where there are no friendships, so see if we can tell the difference from the plots. I just cannot think of a show right not with no friendships 😂
I agree! I did look at doing it for this video but if you compare the fan wiki 'character appearences' section for manga chapters, it's much more complicated. Not impossible by any means but it would have required more work that I didn't really have the time for. I'd love to compare and contrast the two though, I think that'd be cool
One Piece is a manga first and foremost. Why count the episodes when the manga is the canon? Should've counted the chapters and its characters. The anime is just an adaption. This immediately makes the project lose legitimacy.
No offense taken but please note that in no way does this have any legitamacy -- whether it was made from the manga or not. This is just a silly thing I made, nothing more.

I’ve never thought to plot data for a show like one piece! Really fascinating as a long time fan :)
You should do a manga version. This way it doesn’t include filler or flashbacks.
for the past week I've been working on building a spreadsheet with similar information about every single character because im trying to make a wordle clone about guessing one piece character's based on their statistics and attributes. im so glad you have HFA, thank you.
great video!
Thank you for making this
thank you for the nice comment :)

I'll see if I can upload more here but there is also the main channel if you want similar videos (though its not anime exclusive)
Inb4 this blows up
Tekking if you see this pls say hi to Barry for me.
Thought that was a pyramid ship from Destiny for a bit there with the thumbnail.
Man id love this for Wheel of time
With this data we might finally find out who Sogeking is, that's great!
This is why one piece is PEAK
I did not know you had a second channel.
Well now I do. sub right away. 😉
I don't use it much but maybe it'd be economical to post some easy-to-make videos expanding on stuff with existing animations
