Geode Style Paint Pour on a budget with Acrylics No Resin Demo

- Fluid Acrylic Geode style Paint Pour Painting using Pebeo Bindex Pouring Medium.
These Geode Style Paintings are all the rage at the moment and for the most part, they are created using resin but as Resin can be very expensive to buy, I wanted to see if I could create one using acrylic paints and pouring mediums in place of resin.
In this time-lapse video, I create a large geode style composition using real crystals and stones bound together using Liquitex Pouring Medium and Pebeo Bindex and layering acrylic paint and glitter paint.
In my opinion, you can't beat resin for geode paintings and crafts but this was certainly a fun way of creating one on a budget!

Alli Mack thanks Alli! I certainly learned a lot making this one, it sold very quickly, much quicker than I anticipated but I’m going to try some smaller ones next time as well as another one made with wood but I’ll cut the wood into a geode type shape first.

Thank you for sharing this! I wanted to seek your advice I have recently found out through trial and error that I am unable to tolerate resin and cannot chance due to underlinging health issues utilizing it to create art and as disappointing as this have been I would like to see if you have suggestions for still doing fun prep work and utlizing my paints and all supplies for geodes but what would be the best way to cause some fluidity and movement like resin but then how could I secure all my stones and glitters from falling? Hi there! Firstly, apologies for the late reply, I do try to get back to all comments asap but for some reason, I didn't receive a notification of your comment. (naughty UA-cam!)
So my take on what your comment says is that you're looking to recreate geode style pours without using resin - I hope that's accurate.
It would be interesting to know what kind of resin you've been using as you mention health issues - perhaps I'm conflating the two and although I'm no expert on the matter, I am aware that there are some resins that are quite potent in odour and others that claim to be odourless and safe for use, so that may be something to clarify.
As to alternative options, all of my 'geode style' paint pours are made without any resin whatsoever. I simply add pouring medium to my acrylic paints to get the fluidity and movement you refer to and you could use something like Liquitex High Gloss Varnish as a pouring medium in place of Floetrol to create an even glossier finish to your paint mixtures which will offer a very nice shine to the cured product.
This can also be used to bind your glitters and stones as it will harden well but allow enough time to manipulate them in the construction of your composition.
There are alternatives such as Pebeo's Bindex medium, which I've used with stones and glitter with much success or something simpler like glossy mod podge which should also do the trick.
To finish - again, I've used Liquitex High Gloss as a protective glaze to give my pieces a nice shine and it is a great alternative to resin but won't have the same glass-like rigidity and shine.
Price-wise, there's not much difference - about £20.00 per litre - apologies if you need to translate/convert these figures accordingly.

Hi! Thank you! Yes I used Liquitex Pouring Medium for the smooth, creamy consistency of the paint on this one. However I mostly use Floetrol Paint Conditioner in my work as if hells creat more cells and lacing over the Liquitex in my opinion.

How much heat can varnish stand
Well, my step-daughter used this table in her room and would regular place a hot drink on it, suffice as to say, it did get a bit tacky from the heat and I was a tad miffed she didn’t use a coaster! However there was no long term damage to speak of but I’d refrain from anything too hot. Better off with proper worktop resin I should think!

Decopainterandtea Thankyou! I picked most of them up from a thrift store/charity shop. Many of them were used to make crystal jewellery which I took apart.
