- Shelby brings one of his fav's into the spotlight: a 1976 Fender Starcaster in a Sunburst finish, run through a Tone King Falcon CombO.
When first introduced in 1976, Fender's Starcaster couldn't be given away. The public decided that Gibson was a humbucker company, and Fender was it's single-coil counterpart. It hasn't been until recently that these semi-hollow guitars are getting their due. This particular first year '76 Fender Starcaster is in amazing condition, with a striking brown sunburst finish.

Obligatory Radiohead riffing. Sounds awesome
That's why most of us are here, honestly..
Pinetop yea i agree. Ok computer was a shit album man.
@@stuco they are fine but they are ripping off of Coldplay tbh
@@nesfan8 lol wot?
@Martín Abbott can we get a r/woosh here boys? I mean, we all here are obviously Radiohead fanatics, we are just taking a piss bruv.
Been watching this video all week in anticipation for this guitar to come in the mail from a reverb purchase. Look at the box it shipped in and it says Chicago music exchange. I own this guitar! Mind blown!!!!
Wanna sell it? Hahah!
Did it come with buckle rash?
mmm....Radiohead......sounds great.
You can't go out Starcastering without some Green 'n Woody radio-emmiting goodness on this Fendery Jonn. Gotta admit, after experiencing this facial-hairy demonstration, I'm all optimistic again, and by the way, top notch hairstyle. Everything in this demo is in it's right place.
Did you sprinkle a couple of radiohead references around on purpose?
+Storanzo98 anyone can play sarcasm
Yeah, I was kinda slow, I know
Kid A changed my life! In Limbo is one of my favorite tracks - killer demo Shelby, as always.
This is honestly my favorite fender guitar
Saw Radiohead live last night and JG was playing this guitar. Also, he has MASSIVE hands.
This is the best demo of the Starcaster I've ever seen. Great job.
Why thank you!
Everyone: Starcaster
Me, an intellectual: FAT STRAT
@@danill4381 that's the joke
@@danill4381 already got one, it's really nice.
@@danill4381 I think so, does it come with an amp?
Oh, then it might not, I'm not sure to be honest
@@danill4381 yeah, but cables are dirt cheap so it shouldn't be a problem
literally looked at this guitar cause of jonny greenwood.
found this video.

In 1984 learned how to play on a 1977 Starcaster , bought it at a pawn shop , my teacher helped me set it up and it is now retired as my home guitar. Iown two reissues as well
That amp looks like a TV! A very cool guitar.
Everybody's talking about Radiohead and I'm just thinking The Meters :)
Nice job on the demo, and great song choices!
Thank you!!
Love hearing a song from The Meters that's not Cissy Strut!
So refreshing to see more clean and melodic guitar videos. Not bashing blues and high gain playing I do love that too but it seems to dominate guitar demos across UA-cam. Really appreciate the time taken to nicely mic up the amps too :) Keep up the good stuff.
That's hilarious. I was looking up this guitar cause the only guitarist i know who plays this is Jonny Greenwood.
Josh Klinghoffer uses one from time to time.
the starcaster has to be one of the most comfortable bodies to play, fits in so nicely
That is one good looking guitar; headstock, finish and all. Fender should bring it back
Check out the recent squier releases from summer NAMM!
Very unique fender. The fender wide range pickups were designed by Seth lover, same dude who designed Gibson humbuckers.
in limbo
This is one of the beat demos ive seen. Well thought out review with a clever Radiohead riff
I could never understand why this guitar didn't have a bigger following back in the 70's, I always loved it... the wide ranging humbuckers are awesome pickups in my opinion, I always loved the off set, semi-hollow body, and to me that headstock was one of the coolest creations that Fender ever came up with. I'm not a fan of the new reissue, because to me, it's not a reissue, if it's not made like the original model was. Like the new American Special Jazzmaster; it's a nice sounding, and sweet looking guitar, especially the sherwood green model, but it doesn't have the original Jazzmasters control switches, nor does it have the originals floating tremolo, so "in my humble opinion" even though it has a Jazzmaster body and neck, it's not really a Jazzmaster. Same with the new Coronado; kinda looks like a Coronado, but only the body shape, everything else has been changed... Fender, if you're not going to make them true to the original model, call them something else, because what you're selling, only resembles the Starcaster/Jazzmaster/Coronado. Maybe put them in your Pawnshop lineup or something... ;-)

Strangely, years ago this vid made me discover radiohead so...thx
and the sweater of the year award goes to.....Shelby!
Thing sounds like a dream.
Dave Keuning from the Killers uses this guitar a lot live and in studio. He now also has his own custom guitar that’s moddled in it he must like it that much.
Dream semi hollow guitar.
Love this guitar!
Your videos are total ear-candy. And eye-candy too :). Looks like you have a guitarists heaven there.
Weird, I've totally been researching starcasters because of Johnny Greenwood. Nice demo.
Awesome demo. Have been looking for a compare between the old one and the new. Love the look and the sound. I really like the head stock. Have heard too many say they don't like it. Don't know why, but that doesn't matter. I have a strat and I like both. This head stock looks almost exactly like a Gibsom Firebird. I always liked that style. Love your playing.
My brother had one in the 70s with a whammy
The bridge pick up is puuuure rock n roll
I've played 3 starcasters at CME They are Is fair unique I really enjoy playing them.
That is a beautiful guitar
In Limbo's riff is pretty fucking great. But we all knew that.
I have a Mooncaster from Warmoth on order (for those who don't know, the Mooncaster is basically the Warmoth version of the Starcaster) with a look kind of inspired by Dave Grohl's blue Gibson es-335.
Was sceptical on how this would sound - pleasantly surprised!
In Limbo!!
Hahaha great demo. Playing in limbo.. Radiohead is the reason I’m even looking into starcasters lol
In Limbo.....I love you!
Radiohead! Awesome axe.
In Limbo!!!! :D
radiohead!! LOVE
Hi shelby, nice play dude! Btw what do you think about voxac30c2X ? Does it's overdrive sounds good enough withouth overdrive pedal?
got damn I want one
Great demo. Never cared for the headstock on those things. Large Stratocaster headstock would look so much better.
One day I shall buy this, along with the Eastwood Phase 4, and the ThinLine Jaguar.
i dont know why but it just hit me that the starcaster and les paul signature have pretty much the exact same body
ギブソン意識感じるギターですね。
いい音ですね
You're living in a fantasy world :)
Trey Anastasio's custom Languedocs are based on Starcasters.
Can I ask how you edit the Guitar Audio after recording? Do you compress something ect?
Can anyone help me with finding the style of Jonny Greenwood’s playing in In Limbo? That guitar part will single-handedly make me start learning the instrument. Truly inspires me…
The guy from Rival Sons also plays one of these on some stuff.
Can you use a ribbon or condenser in conjunction with the 57? It sounds harsh on its own.
Wow, Ive lived long enough to see a mid-1970's Fender called "vintage"...back in the day, other adjectives were used....
Never before have I seen someone refer to buckle rash as a feature.
Everything I have read from Fender indicates that the original Starcaster was fully hollow, but I have seen several demos where they say it is semi-hollow. I know the reissue has an alder center block, but was the original fully hollow?
I believe the Coronado was a hollow body...the knock on that model was it produced a lot of feedback...Starcaster has a center block running through it...no uncontrollable feedback interfering with your playing.
You are living in a fantasy wooooooorld .... (8)
can you do the ibanez af55?
I'm lost at sea... :)
Radiohead!
what was that last song?
An original piece.
3 bolt neck goooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuu
How much is this guitar worth in 2020?
you remind me of Kings of Leon haha
What the hell amp is that I have to know
This model really got stuck In Limbo.
what a bargain... awesome look and sound.. too bad i live in the netherlands where shipping costs and taxes are a bitch :(
VinceG Do they have any nice guitars made there? Really asking as I do not have much knowledge of your country.
+Chancelor Grey They do! there are a lot of great guitar makers in the netherlands.. check out: www.dickdijkman-guitardesign.com/ and www.haarguitars.com/. those are just a few.
+VinceG Classic Dijkman, klasse.
In 1976, I bought one of the first Starcasters sold in New York. I loved the sound, but Fender's quality in the CBS years stunk. After three months or so of steadily deteriorating fit and finish, I traded it for...I don't even remember what. Do I wish I had that Starcaster today? You bet.
How’s the quality of the Squire Classic Vibe Starcaster that has come out? Lots of good reviews.
Dave Keuning from the killers is a very notable for using this guitar too, I would say more so than greenwood who tends to stick to his Tele most of the time.
Microwave combo amp
fuck whats that radiohead song its on kid a i can't remember
In Limbo, and indeed, it's on Kid A
The killers...
1:46 - "Great" wear mark from buckle rash - that's some salesmanship right there ;/
i dont like the sunburst on the modern player starcaster
гитару к телевизору подключил
even though i appreciate you playing in limbo, you didnt play it in the right timing
amp is superior craft and the player is very good. the guitar has a terrible tone, even on that amp.
