What it’s like living inside a pallet home

- Pallet home living: People have been living at the temporary shelters, called pallet homes, in Greensboro for a couple of weeks now.
They give the homeless a place to stay during the cold winter months.
Tuesday, we met one of the residents from Pomona Park. It's a temporary fix, but it's got some people feeling better about their future.
Joseph Quick is one of the first ones to stay in these pallet homes.
"I've been in and out of the homeless situation for about five years now, I've been you know in a couple of shelters like that but they're all filled up," said Quick.
He said it's been a tough few years.
"I am not doing as good as I have done in life or better or whatever, but I'm doing okay, I'm living," he said.
He said these temporary pallet homes feel like home.

"It's something until you can do better",nice attitude of this nice man, kudos!
@DoStuff1958You must have never been on section 8? The waiting lists are long and homes or apartments are short supply that are up to standard. Those goes apartment or houses that are up to standards first go to emergency case where children kids are involved first and individual medical conditions second. His best chance is to apply senior citizens assistants housing that also through section 8 but with longer waiting lists (deeper discount rates for older renters). That if he can afford it most we tell you it toss up: medication, rent, utilities, necessities, or foods. Yes in that order because if can’t pay utilities you out and if can’t buy necessities to keep it clean you out the program.
Easy build they are safe and take people off street
Very good attitude.
Commit a crime and go to prison... 5 hot meals a day and a warm place to sleep with other like minded individuals.

Nice to hear that the old guy is happy with his cribb. Nice to see, nice to hear the happiness in this mans voice.
Everyone deserves a roof over their head, especially in winter. God Bless Greensboro for sheltering the less fortune
I love his sense of humor and positive mindset.... he's so appreciative
I hope this catches on everywhere ..every city needs them. Shelters are getting so violent and too full, I saw a special once about a woman had to stay in one. If I were homeless I would be too afraid to stay in a shelter. These Pallet homes are a wonderful alternative.
I saw a shelter that a church offered for the homeless, years ago.Horrific! You can only sleep on chairs & not the ground because the church did not want homeless couples having sex.A shower stall flooded the entrance. No beauty in the place!Just one big dingy, ugly place.
If these become widespread, it will be just as violent. Same situation as a shelter, but entire neighborhoods of degenerates instead...
This is a great idea because it provides safety and shelter from the elements for people who would otherwise be exposed to street violence and the weather. Why don’t communities provide more of this? It looks cost effective unless they are fearful that they might attract more homeless to their area.
This should be a main focus in most of our cities. A lot of people could and would benefit from this
A true blessing
That’s wonderful! Makes you thankful for what you have.
I’m so happy they are able to stay somewhere warm.
this is a blessing vs. sleeping in the streets in boxes. thank god for the people responsible for doing this.
Love it they should do more like this for the homeless in every city and every town pray for them during the winter so they have shelter I hope and pray God blesses every one of them
Met a homeless man on the streets about 15 years ago.....what a life living this way and I am 15 miles from downtown Chicago.
I hope they do this in the uk because we have many vets on the streets that nobody cares about
it's better than living outside where it's cold wet
That's why I work and have a home
I Can TRULY Say I Know How It FEELS! I Was Homeless For 8 Long Years With My Daughter! It's Really Hard😢
This should be a nation wide thing. ❤
God bless you so much because you have a home you could no do for yourself I pray they do this in South Africa
That’s awesome. We really need to help the Americans that are homeless.
It's a blessing I would thankful if I had one
Thank God they are helping men. America helps women and children but never help men. This is a good change.
I would live in one of these permanently. I think it’s a good idea to make neighborhoods of tiny homes for single people living alone
No kitchen, no toilet, no water, no washing machine, no ...
In other words, you want lazy people to get free housing...
Ramona park broke my heart
San Francisco should have thought of this versus those tents. Those tents were featured on 60 minutes and a hefty price tag $60,000 each. Make San Francisco beautiful again!
very interesting to see this...hopefully it will help many..it is time the govt does something to help out
Minimalism, I know, been doin it all my life. Retired and enjoying the fact that after 43 years I can afford what I want. It’s the American way.
need more !♥
It goes to show you that if you show some compassion and give a person a hand up they will appreciate what you have done for them. That is the Christian philosophy. To help others as you would want them to help you.
Yes! Amen!!
One day I will own my own home.
My friend is a millionaire and lives in a camper, so 🤷 this seems like a great idea. Give people a chance to get back on their feet.
I don't know how all of these are funded, but it would be cool to ask for people to sponsor and pay for one of the homes. They can't be too expensive.
In 50 years this will be a luxury mansion
We could do with something like this in The UK 🇬🇧 and all over to give the homeless some where to stay until they can get back on their feet
I love but that time that you’re hanging out keeps you where you are. Use that time to get a temporary job or go get an ID for a job so you can start work, get a check and can afford a permanent home 🙏🏽
They need to do something like that in NYC.
That's awesome.
Lord, thank you.
If the person pays for it, it's all good. No freebies!
Nice
Can the people stay as long as they need or are they evicted when warm weather starts?
Great idea should be in every city.
What about security? Are there watchmen?
Does the police have many violence in these places?
I offered a place to stay no drinking no smoking no one wanted it
Same here!
Fantastic
This is way better then being on the streets expose to the many dangers
And so much better than sleeping on a cot with a bunch of others all around. I love this.
Indeed.
This is a great idea. And to think we have sent $75 Billion dollars to Ukraine. But we don't have any money to do stuff like this all over the U.S.? How much do these cost?
The sad thing about all you people in the comment section. Wouldn't give this man a f****** sandwich or the time of f****** day. You get on here and social media and say this s*** to make yourself feel better about yourself.
well if each unit is around 2k just guessing in cost divided by 75 billion we could have constructed 37 million of these shelters across the us@@lucasw2880
These need to be worldwide, I’ve been homeless, I was living in a tent under a bridge for 4 years before someone was kind enough to help me get a job and a temporary place to stay until I could afford my own place, I invite that man and his family over every holiday and can’t stop thanking them for what they did to help me, I would do for anyone what they did to me ❤
They are "worldwide" and in many non western countries are treated with unregulated chemicals.

I was homeless for over 12 yrs and these small homes are a god send for these people, it also cuts down on diseases and bed bugs being spread in shelters.
Yes these pallet homes actually have bedbug proof mattresses! They are like hospital beds. Very sterile and clean! They all have inverter air conditioners with heat pumps! All handicap accessible too!
Used to work at a big city ER, and when its really cold, half the people coming in are homeless people at death’s door with pneumonia and dehydration. Most of them are mentally ill and just don’t have family that can deal with it anymore. The rest are people who can’t stop the drugs, or genuinely couldn’t catch a break and have no family to fall back on.
Yerp
They are doing this in Denver now, too. As a society, we can afford to put people in sheds to keep them freezing. Also, mental health gets worse without sleep. Allowing people to lock a door , feel safe & fall sleep will help those with mental health issues. Also, my apt is getting hotter too, I think we will all need to have a/c soon. Look at the extra confidence that guy has knowing he can leave & come back & he will have a place to sleep.🥰
Pathetic.

As I sit here in my safe, comfortable home watching this, I think what a huge moment it must be for someone who’s been living under a bridge, in a tent, or worse, to be able to step into one of these! Having a roof over our their heads, heat, a locked door and a place to warmly and safely get a good nights sleep must be an experience of unspeakable joy! Kudos to those behind this! Psychologically speaking just having a place you can call yours, put your stuff safely in and use as a base of operations can really help someone turn things around. I hope they give these people a mail box too. Having a physical address to put on paperwork and applications can help tremendously. Whether it's a job application or for assistance programs.
good point about mail
It gives them a taste of living on their own again that makes them want to work towards getting their own place
Exactly. I am all for this as long as it is not viewed as permanent housing but rather a transitional step toward getting a quality job and a permanent home.
@@trwent Maybe what they could do is after 6 months or so, start charging a tiny bit of rent ($50/month to start) and every month it goes up $10/month.

They're doing something similar with these tiny-house communities that are popping up. Same idea, just perhaps more permanent.
There are several states/cities that have similar versions. It depends on how receptive locals are to the situation.
Thank you Joseph for showing us your "man cave". I like that you are grateful for the help, you don't knock it, as you put it. We need to thank God always, even for the little things. I think your place looks darn cool to me. You are also sending the public a message that even though you mess up, you are still Blessed by God.😇
This is something that should have been started many years ago-however, nonetheless I am glad to see this! These shelters should also be placed in the same neighborhoods as the politicians'.
The politicians might have a better understanding of the real world then.
@@eddie054they understand perfectly and don't give a sht about the real world. Only THEIR little world matters. C' mon MAN. 😂

Why does everything have to be political nowadays. I think these house a great but if you approach people in let's say your neighborhood and suggest 5 of these put on a vacant lot see how fast they are down to city hall to protest.
@@cynthianaylor9514because politicians are the greedy people and the reason we are in this mess.
This is why it's worth doing it : there are TONS of people out there who are grateful for that.
Palletshelter, a Washington-based firm, can build a transitional village of 60 in ten days. Each lockable shelter could cost $5500. There are already 100 developments in CA, OR and WA. Beware of politicians who only talk of big money and transitional shelters but are afraid of successful and inexpensive solutions!
$5500 for a shed without plumbing or electricity? You could get a storage shed at lowes for $99
@@karlabritfeld7104They have electricity. But that still sounds like a lot of money for something so little.
Right, that does sound expensive. I would have thought less than 2,000.00. With the land.
If politicians have no crises or problems to base their election platforms on, then they have nothing to say at the debates. That's a main reason why problems don't get solved.

Truly wish these tiny houses become a stable part of all homeless people. Cheap and easy to make. Take up little space. And, most importantly, a safe, warm place for disinfranchished citizens to rest their heads and souls.❤
Rule #1 clean up after work..that was my only problem being homeless so Warm running water (shower) would really be a blessing.
In having worked with the homeless, this and clean clothes is a biggie. It makes it hard to hold down a job when personal hygiene and clean work clothes isn't possible. My area has a place to wash clothes and shower twice a week, but it is only available for 4 hours and then you're out of luck. What is even worse is they are during daytime job hours.

@juliet The homeless don't need liquor and drugs, either, yet we continue to fund their chosen "lifestyle."

My town has two different lots for tiny homes for the homeless, but there needs to be more. When i drive around town, i see so many large vacant lots. These vacant lots could be utilized for the homeless. Or the vacant lots could be used for the campers and cars/ trucks that are parked everywhere. These are great for the homeless! I hope this can catch on across the country! Everyone needs a place to call home, no matter what it may be. Especially good news for our deserving veterans who served this great country of ours! God Bless them all!
I've been homeless and I would have been very grateful to have one of those.
While he's "Downtown hanging out" can the shelter providers partner with the city to find him something constructive to do? Surely there are some sidewalks in town in need of attention. Lessen the load of the overworked and underpaid City Employees!
I think this is a great idea, allowing people who want to improve their lot in life a chance to stay in a place that is in out of the weather. This guy seems appreciative, and the fact that he keeps his belongings neatly makes me think he is deserving of this help. I realize a lot of the homeless situation is associated with drugs, but a lot is not (one quarter of the nation's homeless are veterans) and these people need all the help they can get. I commend all cities that implement this initiative.
So someone who is messy wouldn't be deserving of this home?
Well, actually, I think that factor might have something to do with it. These dwellings are about helping people who want to better their situation. Everything is relative, but someone who piled their temporary home with trash would not be signaling that they were ready to move onto the next level.@@susanlbk

Los Angeles has rows of them at the West LA VA Medical Center for homeless veterans.
Sometimes the simplest solution can be the best. For those who look down upon homeless people, I pray that you are never homeless.
They should try this in Canada. We are at -30C and Edmonton is more concerned at tearing down homeless camps and displacing the homeless out into the cold. I know many homeless don't want to go into shelters because they might loose their belongs. Maybe this might be a solution here?
From Canada. We are slowly getting things together in this regard. Very slowly. Society needs to show more sympathy towards those in desperate situations. It's great to see these types of initiatives.
Northern BC/Yukon are still horrid for the homeless in every sense, which is sad. -- Hopefully the country gets a bit better representation here soon. Sadly Northern BC suffers because the province is ran like everyone lives in dang Vancouver/Kelowna. When in fact, they do not.
