Billy Squier in the Studio promoting his new album "Enough Is Enough" and brings up his now infamous "Rock Me Tonite" music video from 1984
Wow, I think this is the first hearing Billy talk. I've been listening to his music for 40 years, and this is the first time hearing him speak!
I could not have survived high school if it wasn't for Billy. He had a song that fit everything I went through and gave me the strength to persevere through it all the break ups and the make ups plus helping me make sense of life's lessons. Learn how to bend learn how to break learn how to mend broken heartaches. Thanks Billy.
Get a grip...
@@flashinthepan3273 I myself would not have survived high school if it weren't for my insulin. Top that one.
Yes❤🙌
Billy was the Man. Guy had some amazing rock hits that'll live on forever including "Rock Me Tonite."
Love his music, one of the most underrated rockers ever
I don't care about the rocky tonite video. He is handsome AF,great singer, songwriter, guitarist and I still listen to his music.
I'm a male comfortable in my sexuality and I approve this post. 😂
If you think about it - those folks making the fuss about the dancing are all boomers now - still homophobes and backwards
It's just a video ugh there were lots of silly videos in the eighties
Rocky Tonight like Sylvester Stallone? Lol
@@KOSMICKEN09 Just admit it if you enjoy big 🥒
He lost a good swath of his male fans from this video
HE IS GORGEOUS
Hello Sarah
How are you doing?
It's a pleasure to have you here!
Hell, I just pretended I was back when the world made sense for a while...
I was born in 1996 and I feel like I could just watch commercials from the 80’s and be just as entertained by them as I would be watching the tv shows of the 80’s.
Actually, the commercials were way kooler!! 🙋
Wow! Those commercials really took me back! I haven't seen those in years. Somebody could make alot of $$ just playing MTV just like it aired from the 80's til it quit playing videos. Nostalgia is powerful!
Seems like it would beat the hell out of anything current in music
Yep!
Theyre trolling him with that first commercial......jeez.
I get such a quaint feeling watching this with the commercials and everything. Wish i could stream old live tv.. there's something soothing about it.
Hes so cute
He isssssss omg I wanna see him dance for me!! Lol ❤️❤️❤️❤️😜🥰
Hilarious how that first commercial was like rock me tonite. It's like they're trolling him.
God I miss the original MTV!!!! Those were the days!!
Ya, for sure. Who knew it would ever end? Boomers had the best of everything, Millenials have all the technology, Gen X had Music Television.
@@icecreamforcrowhurst Gen X...we had it really good. Music and videos was all we needed
An interview like this would never be put on contemporary MTV.
The corporate buyout wrecked it.
He said his favorite band was the Smithereens! I mean A girl Like You! Love Billy Squier!
I really liked that song too, it stood out when I heard it on the radio.
Thank you for keeping the original commercials in. What great memories
Oh....yes!
Yeah, did you notice the commercial seemed to mock Billy Squier's Need You Tonight video?
@@samsonian9468 Need You Tonite? I don't think he did a song with that title.
@@miller6910 I meant Rock Me Tonight.. I'm a big INXS fan too and the song titles are similar. Haha
@@miller6910 I see you're an INXS fan too! :)
thank you for leaving the commercials in! awsome!!! they are so cool also they really set the vibe
Can we just all get behind how great it is that the Panasonic commercial after the first interview segment features a man prancing around his living room in a (occasionally) pink tank top?
lol, I was looking forward to being the only one to notice....I wonder if Billy saw the commercial while being interviewed.
I wish as a CHRISTIAN Man that I would have had cable and could take in the mass of videos because I Pray for these guys and girls. I love em' and care for their Family and even their souls. There is a lot of GOD Given Talent there and I love em'.
At 13:02 BS addresses Rock Me Tonight saying that the vid wasn't "representative" of his band. In other words, fans, please come back.
He rocks
Thanks for not cutting the commercials enjoy these too.

Especially that first Panasonic commercial that was obviously inspired by the Rock Me Tonite video.
I was born in 82. At around the age of 2 I took over the living room and binged MTV. While other toddlers/kids watched cartoons, I was watching MTV. This video is bringing me back.
The Rockme tonite video put Billy on the map of rock n roll . Go watch Rock me tonite , it'll blow your mind !
Benetton! I remember when you just weren't cool if you didn't wear something of theirs. Billy was great!
I bet he couldn't rip that dope ass sweater.
What an 80s sweater
What did I do? - The Sweater, 2024
Lol
This is CLASSIC!
I watched this when it originally aired. I remember that interview, I was 18. I know that I have not seen those commercials since then and I barely remember that Billy Squire video, complete with the Twin Towers in it. That was a twenty minute time travel trip. That just depressed the hell out of me and made me feel young again at the same time. I do miss my youth and the 80's in a very painful way. Life really does race by.
I'm about a year younger than you I can relate, hang in there brother.
sort your fucking life out
I love how classy Billy Squier is he doesn't get offended by this very inappropriate interviewer who has no manners
Billy’s amazing !!!!
❤you rock man
Thanks for posting this. Billy was trying to do damage control for that Rock me Tonight video. Its interesting to see what he said then versus what he said years later. Here he still has hope that his career could be set right with a new video of the band performing and a great song and good album. But it was not to be and despite his efforts to continue to make great music, many of his fans defected and the musical stream diverted from AOR to Hairbands and Hip Hop.
Ernest B it’s a shame because his music is really of a better quality than most of the hair bands that released albums in the 80s.
It's always struck me as strange the way that whole thing with the video went down. It's always been put down to homophobia, but that doesn't really make sense. I mean, you had Queen, who were megastars, no question about Freddie's sexual orientation, even if it was never explicitly stated. You had Judas Priest, which as Rob Halford once stated in an interview, "it hit you in the face really with all the leather and studs, it couldn't have been more obvious." It wasn't like rock n roll was devoid of gay men. And even though Billy Squier was categorically NOT gay (although you gotta admit many of his stage moves were pretty effeminate) he was basically blacklisted. It was all so weird. You almost wondered if there was some other hidden reason the record industry was so ready to drop him.
Well said.
Looks like he's making a hostage tape and you can't tell if he's the begging parent or the pleading dui arrest.
@@rbilleaudInteresting take.
love is the hero great duet between Billy and Freddie!!!!
Amazing backing vocals
Freddie is great and so is this song, but he made "Love is the hero" a Queen song.
Sounds like Queen mixed with Talking Heads.
Love ya Billy
he's more serious and more articulate than I had expected (no, not Alan Hunter, fool!)
Alan good interviewer
@@edp3202 Compared to Mark Goodman, yes.
Win a contest with Tina Turner..... oh hellz yeah...
God i miss 1986
Truth:
Billy was and is SUCH a talented singing/songwriting powerhouse, and such a great musician, and producer, that unfortunately, got caught under the wheels of a system that poorly mismanaged, misinterpreted, and misunderstood him, and did not allow him proper control of his own destiny.
If he’d just been aloud to organically grow, and wasn’t managed by a never ending circus of disingenuous, dishonest, and talentless bonehead goons, who did NOT have his best interests at heart, and were looking to only fist f%#$ his bank account, he would’ve and should’ve been one of the marquee acts of the 80’s AND 90’s for that matter. It’s just sad, and tragic.
Billy Squier is living proof that you can have it all, talent, money, power, fame, opportunity, and ability, and do everything right, and play by the rules, and not be a idiot, or alcoholic, or drug attic, with a need hanging out of your arm, and STILL that industry will EAT you ALIVE! And then discard you like waste! And you best believe that ain’t got shit to do with one wack ass video for ‘Rock Me Tonight”…and whoever says it does is an idiot. One stupid video has never ruined a rockstar of that calibers career. I mean, hello, were you watching videos in the 80’s?
billy won in the end he got out of business owning all his publishing and thanks to being most sampled artist in hip hop history is worth about 70 million bucks today. he also should be in hof
PIPER was a killer band! 2 great albums. The 2nd album 'Can't Wait' is a classic!!
Yes they were a bit like power pop good band
Love seeing a reto video of billy if anyone have anymore please post.
I wonder if that VHS commercial was the inspiration for the 'Rock Me Tonight' video?
not likely, the commercial was surely filmed in 1986, it came after..plus its playing "Addicted to love", a 1985 song. Its very likely the commercial was inspired by the video
Did anyone notice the Panasonic commercial seemed to make fun of Billy Squier's Rock Me Tonight video?
I'm glad the commercials are in and the dials are on the TV.
Thanks for posting, I've been looking for some fresh Retro interviews of Billy. :) ;)
You can tell the new album was produced by the same guy who did Rush's Power Windows. 80's overload
still a great sounding record
and now after listening to the video for this album he was promoting, it sounds nothing like power windows. This has an awful gated snare sound, and every other awful production cliche of this time. so no you can't tell at all it was the same producer.
I always thought Billy Squire would of been a good fit in Van Halen... who knows
It’s Squier. And also literally says it in the video title.
Pedantic any? Sheesh!..
Squire did not do nearly enough drugs to fit in with Van halen.
@@Ac22768 everyone spells his name wrong lol it's maddening
@@jeffkaufman9875 He can be pedantic. He can be pedantic.
I was 8yrs old. I remember them days back when they had Saturday morning cartoons. Hip Hop was not even a threat back then. But had a lot of fun as a kid back then.

whaa? theres no reality shit interrupting?
Actual music and conversation with a musician???
Yep, I miss my childhood.
With adverts too! 👌🏻
I was reminded today three different times how old I'm getting-and this video is one of them. The other? A kid, maybe 12,he asked me what "three-way-calling" was,and was it like "old days" sexting? I said "I'm far too young.I have no idea".Third one? Effen AARP app/info in my snail mail box.I'm not even 50 wth?! (close though-ouch)
Signs of life was bad ass
Poor Billy. Here he is...trying to come back from that homoerotic "Rock Me Tonight" video...and the first commercial they break to is a very gay Panasonic ad. He just couldn't win.
lol, i'd heard about it and just watched it, wow, billy had some pretty effeminate body language for a straight guy, (the 80's were a strange decade) he reminds me of a guitar player i was in a band with, same thing, straight but if you didn't know him you would wonder.
It was the 80’s we were all weird!
BlueEyes 1970 😂😂😂
I was thinking that it must have gave him flashbacks.lol
Thr pride of Swellesley MA
Fact remains! !!! In the beginning Nothing to let go of! !!
Nothing remains! !!
His eyes look like Richard Remerez.
You're right about the Ramirez-like eyes!
Little known fact : the video for “Rock me tonight “ was patient zero for the Aids epidemic
Well known fact: some people are still laughing about AiDS and proudly embracing their homophobia even 40 years later
hahaha
@@Marcel_AudubonAgreed.
@@Marcel_Audubon Monkeypox was kind of funny, at least.
Poor billy was internet canceld before it existed.
Gen x seen it all....
Gawd, Alan Hunter really couldn't connect at all in this interview. Have a bagel, which is stale by now. Maybe we'll watch Billy eat a bagel. Wtf was that? No wonder the veejay platform tanked.
:( The WTC at the beginning of that video. Worlds away.
At 1:32, who also thinks that the Panasonic commercial they showed was deliberately targeted at Billy Squire, to mock his disastrous "Rock Me Tonight" music video? It's just to dead on accurate to not be a parody. Even the set looks very close to the same one that was used in the video. Total coincidence? Or deliberate planning? You decide.
This is a clip of Billy Squier in career freefall.
Well, it wasn't all his fault. Music changes over time.
@@trentallman984 It was that "Rock Me Tonight" video.
Don’t be salty Billy, you signed off on it
There is no way he couldnt have known what it would look like. I mean, how different could it have been?
They could have called it Cock Me Tonite and it wouldnt have been a whole lot more damaging.
2:15,. This is where Biggie Smalls got the bassline for "hypnotize"
VHS HI-FI !! Hell yea. where can i pick up one of those??
Goodwill
🤣
All I will say is that visually Billy should keep both hands on the guitar.
3:04, Holy Cow, who knew James Taylor had a Heavy Metal phase! Now I've seen everything ;)
Lmao 🤣
1/20/24 Squires bass player in the mid eighties was a lot different than his early 80s bass player...
I love Billy Squier, but that 'Rock me tonight' video.... cringe worthy😬😬😬
Lol...a lot of his videos were cringeworthy
i remember going to work that week waiting to see if anyone admitted they liked the video. me and my roomies were dumb founded when we saw it
@@theespawner6278 I remember a critic said billy was swishy in it. Swishy!
Why couldn’t they just do the Rock Me Tonight video like this smh. Poor Billy
I wonder if it's too late to enter the Tina Turner contest....
There's definitely an elephant in the room rock me tonight
The Panasonic commercial features a hunk in pajama pants prancing around in his dark apartment just like Billy did...
Well we had plenty of great music before MTV came along and changed the music, video killed the radio star and the music was still great before MTV. The Music would still be great and some entertainer's wouldn't have made some bad videos that killed their great career. I wish there never was MTV because the music that was popular before it was great and disappeared forever.
Baby Ruth... Butterfinger.
Can something be done about the sound?? It sounds muffled & hard to understand....I would love to hear this. 😊
It created a false impression that he was gay that is. That's what he meant but coudln't say that.
yeah, it's too bad he couldn't just say that.....it may have actually helped.
Twin towers in the opening shot of the video. 😢
The Smithereens is a great choice.
I really miss the days when mtv was actually Music television, instead of reality tv based, Mutherfucker television.
Hmmm... @1:37... How ironic... That ad is very similar to the video that killed Billy's career !!! :/:/:/
Billy looks a bit like Slash in this video.
Brian May
Is he the greatest solo rock ‘n’ roll male artist of the 70’s and 80’s?
I give up.
No, no he is not.
he was done by this time, actually mid 84 was his career suicide.
Yep thanks to Mr. Kenny Ortega.. but honestly if I were Billy I would've straight up said "Not doing it". It's mostly his own fault. Stand up for yourself.
Yep...he was toast
Imagine that. An artist talking about music and production in an intelligent conversation on tv. It’s pretty sad how far we’ve fallen.
@@PlanktoniusRex Buttered on the wrong side at that..
Uh no his hear and now album in 1989 did fairly well
Billy saw that Panasonic commercial and had an epiphany ...”man I need to make a video where I too dance around like a poncy hairdresser ... that will be a great career move!”
That's just the way he is. I mean if we're being completely honest, Billy's stage moves have always struck me as being "effeminate". Nothing against that, some people just demonstrate their rhythmic exhilaration in different ways. All singers have a style and that happened to be his. So seeing him prance around was not completely out of character for him. But it's agreed that from a purely PR point of view, not the best choice.
it was the other way around. rock me tonight in 84, panasonic ad in 86
It's so tiresome hearing about this video - it got played to death on MTV I saw plenty of videos as silly as his.
It worked for mick jagger
That was too gay for us. - Poncy Hairdressers everywhere.
I love you Billy! You got a BUM deal from a SHALLOW MINDED PUBLIC! So what if you ripped your shirt off in pastel clothes!! WOOPDE DOO! They public can be SO LAME in criticizing others..Pisses me off you getting judged for NOTHING you did wrong! You mean to tell me that the public is that visual that they condemned you for a VIDEO that wasn't the best you've done after all you did do that ROCKED!
Completely straight, drops Freddy Mercury's name.
Only five years later Freddie would die from AIDS. So sad.
Gasp! Oh my gawd, is it possible that's Billy's fault? 😮 just kidding. I miss him alot...
Yes, the "Rock Me Tonite" video killed Freddy too.
What if *Ike* won the tina Turner tickets? 😳
Unfortunately he aged out. He was looking like a middle aged man compared to the up n coming glam bands. It’s unfortunate, but that’s the way it was. His sound was late 79s/early 80s…..doesn’t mean he didn’t still make good 🎵…but the charts are mostly not about good music.
His sound in '86 sounds really dated, over-produced clap-trap. Bad move on his part. Should have just stuck to rocking out naturally..
@@crapple009The glam metal bands (by comparison to the pop of the day) actually sounded relatively organic in terms of the instrumentation.... So yeah Billy at this point was trying to fit into the pop scene rather than compete with the latest hard rock bands.
What video?
This was WAY after 'Rock Me Tonight' & they STILL wanted to interview him?
Why can't people let this shit go I lived through that era MTV played the video it was a hit
The only thing MTV would absolutely NOT touch in the 80's was any 70's disco artist.... They did a special for KISS around 1984, which was like 5 years after KISS had a hit record. MTV's producers in the 80's were big Rock fans and didn't mind promoting middle aged and arguably past their prime rock artists.
17:55. Interesting fact: Tina renounced her American citizenship, she’s a Swiss citizen now. I guess she doesn’t need to party with Americans anymore 🤨
Pretty sure she isn't partying with the Swiss at this point either.
What were you doing with Freddie at five in the morning lol
my mom was wrong about him....boy was mom wrong also this was after the video killed career....my mom could have ended his career
what?????🤣
that interviewer was so rude
