In those early 80's MTV years I had a tiny apartment and lived alone. So when I was home I'd have MTV on constantly - even on when I slept. It was a kind of living-breathing background "noise" that I could dip in and out of whenever I wanted. It felt like these were my friends and we were all in this amazing music world together.

During the early 2000s, MTV still cared about their rock and 80s roots. People kinda tend to forget that. It wasn't until about 2005 they went full blown reality TV and pretended like their past never existed.

My older cousin told me we had to stay up until midnight to see this new channel start up. I didnt get it, but I waited and remember the excitement of the screen going from fuzz to the countdown of the rocket ship launching and the music starting as the spaceman planted the flag. I witnessed history.

The trade-off is that we're all on the nostalgia train here on YT. However I would argue that the advent of the webcam killed the video star and introduced the world to reality tv. And like a virus compareable to a digital pandemic it infected all the programming of syndicated channels world-wide. As a result, all the creatively well-produced thoughtful shows and programming succumbed to utter complacency and laziness and not to mention pure greed. The production cost of holding a wobbly digital camera on your shoulder while following a bunch of sychophants around a house is cheap but they still sold ad time at over-inflated rates. C'est la vie. It's life I guess the world changes sometimes for the better sometimes not. But I am loving this aspect of YT for sure ")
