Regarding challenges: I attended Ohio State University and the OSUMB fields a band of 192 at half time, but there are actually 235 total band members. Band members challenge weekly for their spot at half time. Those that do not earn a spot on the field at half time are "alternates" for the week, still expected to learn the show and rehearse with their section and squad in case of an injury or illness creating a spot that needs to be filled. But at half time the alternates are assigned various tasks such as holding director ladders, (1-2 band members per ladder to set up at half time and stabilize during the show), moving equipment, collecting any dropped equipment during the show, and any number of other tasks that are actually quite important to keeping the shows running smoothly. But to keep everyone at the top of their game, all band members regardless of seniority must try out at the beginning of every season and then challenge every week for their spot on the field at half time.

Honestly, having done both styles at some point or another, I'd argue it's less about the historical demographics of the line and more about what the line is trying to do. Corps style is about pleasing judges through strong discipline and uniform technique, and show style (or, as I've taken to referring to it, collegiate style) is about pleasing the crowd by being super flashy. At the end of the day, though, they're still largely the same activity, and the objective is still to lay down clean beats for the enjoyment of others

Its all good Eric. I was in a corps style band in high school in Southeast Louisiana. Alot of other bands were show style, and we used to make fun of them all the time for being over the top or sloppy or over hyped. I really never learned to appreciate it until my senior year when I got to talk to other drum captains on why they enjoy that style. I still would rather play in a corps style band though.

I mean, its kinda hard to not run into any of the show style bands considering how much of a big deal they are down there. My dad actually marched with Edna Karr in the early 90s so he always tells me how much of a big deal it is in New Orleans. But, they do need to be clean and many of them are, while some need work. (I would know since I remember watching one of the parades this year at Mardi Gras and there were some high schools who need some cleaning up).

    • @sambecker2155

Oh yeah, in New Orleans there are some big show style bands. For parades they play and often do a lot of really cool visual stuff. Marching in a Mardi Gras parade isn’t like anything else. And while they’re not the cleanest, god damn they’re entertaining, and god knows the drunk parade watchers don’t know the difference. I’m not in a show style band but I really do appreciate it. It takes a lot to play and dance while marching five miles. Look up some videos if you want to know what I’m talking about. There are a ton of videos of marching bands in Mardi Gras parades.

If anything check out Beyonce's Coachella performance. She even said as much, bringing the excitement and fun of the HBCU 5th quarter as her concert. Hell even in her opening number the band is playing a number that I often hear FAMU play in the stands. Not to mention she had the band play after the percussion break, "Hay" by Crucial conflict, and Hay battles are a big part of the HBCU experience.
Okay, so show style is as you said is synonymous with HBCUs. Many people have complaints about how the horns sound like crap drums not playing cleanly and to that I say yes, there are some bands out there for lack of better words, really should check how they play, but at the same time there are MANY MANY more bands that play cleanly and sound perfect. Which brings me to the overall sound. You have to understand that the bands are playing popular R&B, Hip Hop, and Pop music, meaning if you hear it on the radio, there is a good chance you will be able to recognize the tune and go dance in the stands. Add different dance moves and it's a style that is quite difficult to master.

It takes a lot to admit one's errors and mistakes, but you get points for trying to incorporate both sides of the coin. Show band and Corp band style have their niche in the marching community-as they both present the best for their fan base. Keep up the good work.

We actually played in our band during my graduation. There weren't any problems... all of the seniors played each year during their graduation. The seniors would retake their seats with their fellow graduates for the final march out while the rest if the band played without us. Loved that I got to play one last time and at my graduation. ❤

I don’t mean to get pedantic here, but in this video you said there’s 2 types of marching bands: corps and show-style. But there’s actually a 3rd type which is especially popular in Texas, mostly East Texas. Military marching band. There’s even NAMMB which is the National Association of Military Marching Bands. I didn’t know military marching bands were a thing until I started teaching in Texas 8 years ago, but they’re a pretty big thing here. Anyway, I don’t mean to be the “well actually” guy, especially not on a video you made specifically to correct yourself! But I thought I’d just throw this in here! Thanks for everything you do.

Thanks for speaking up for military style bands! I grew up in east texas and got to do both military and corps style in high school and had fun experiencing both if those styles. There's more variety of music in the corps style although when we were military style our director started working in other types of music other than the traditional military marches.

Im from Indiana and while visiting friends in Louisiana for Mardi gras I was struck by the differences of the marching bands in the parades. The dancing was something totally different from what I was used to. There doesnt seem like theres alot of info out there for show style bands. I've watched some videos but I've never found one where the culture of it is explained. That could be my shoddy search skills but it's understandable that you didnt know.
I admire the fact that you admitted that you were wrong. Definetly need to find someone knowledgeable of show style to do a collab with that would be great.

I had wondered if your review of the movie would get some heat. I’m proud of you for not sugar coating your mistakes and actually apologizing. A lot of young percussionist watch your videos and will hopefully learn from your mature decision to make things right. While I come from the same world of drumming that you do, I wish there would be more education on other styles of drumming to avoid what you are going through right now. You are not the first person I have heard be critical of that film for what are usually uninformed reasons. I think it’s a brilliant idea for you to bring someone in from the HBCU community who has experience in this genre of marching band. Not just for your own education, but for everyone else to learn about the difference between the two styles. Seems like your audience would benefit greatly (myself included!). Keep doing you, man! Way to check and adjust. :)

HBCU Bands in Drumline the movie the first one!! Not the second one! The first one! Main two bands featured (Atlanta A&T) Not a Real College! Morris Brown College!!! The real deal! Gramblin State University Marching Band, Clark Atlanta University, BCU Bethune Cookman University!! The Atlanta A&T members were audition from all over from different HBCU Bands for the movie. Atlanta A&T uniforms came from one of the High School bands you showed which is Southwest Dekalb High School from Atlanta, GA it’s the ones with the Yellow and Blue uniforms. But there is different styles all together. What people don’t know is sure DCI is great but HBCU Bands break things down. And yes they can play at the same quality as DCI. NC A&T and Norfolk State are prime example. Now it brakes it down even more bands such as NC A&T and Norfolk State are what we call in HBCU band world as MEAC Bands! PV Prairie view A&M, Southern University, JACKSON State University, Florida A&M, Alcorn State, Miles College all those colleges are known as SWAC Bands! Top HBCU Rank bands here in the South is SWAC Bands such as Southern University The Human Jukebox Marching Band, Jackson State University The Sonic Boom Of The South, Prairie View Marching Storm. Look Up the BoomBox Classic SU Vs. JSU! It’s something different! Keep in mind it’s a different style from what your use too! ua-cam.com/video/45ycozbzt8U/v-deo.html First Quarter Battle SU Vs JSU BoomBox Classic! And also a video from the Battle of the Bands I went to here in Houston, TX National Battle Of The Bands ua-cam.com/video/crpzswkjius/v-deo.html and this from the Honda BOTB back in 2015 ua-cam.com/video/rpJmP_mS-4g/v-deo.html and PV playing Murder on my Mind ua-cam.com/video/tbJ2DWy3s4k/v-deo.html you will have to skip to 4 min Mark on the link above to see it. Last link Jackson State Marching in at the Soul Bowl in 2014 now you can see the reason for the T-Drums in the video link ua-cam.com/video/VGbWGDGygUg/v-deo.html One thing you will notice is that HBCU Drumlines Break Down the same rudiments at a lower tempo which is old school, to where you can fully understand it versus crazy lick after crazy lick! Big difference from DCI where you are playing it at 160-190. Now as far as the Tom! Yes the guy is play it correctly and playing it really good it’s like I said broken down at a lower tempo! And that’s on a show style level! Now in HBCU world you are challenging for your spot and that happens all the time. You have to be on top of your game to perform at the best of your ability. JACKSON State’s War and Thunder Drumline is a Prime Example as well. Just have to see it for yourself. Best advice go to a Honda BOTB’s and compare it to what it is with DCI. You will love it more than DCI. Sure DCI is great but after a while it gets boring.

Eric, Atlanta A&T is based off of Southern University, the school was actually supposed to be in the movie but declined because they didn’t like the story line, why do you think every other college in the movie was an actual university. Look at the similarities, Atlanta’s colors were blue and gold, same as SU, Atlanta’s mascot is the panthers, SU is the jaguars, in the movie, then even use southern’s catchphrase but changed it a little, Southern is “often imitated but never duplicated,” and Atlanta is “you’ve seen imitators, you’ve seen duplicators, but here’s the originators.

    • @professorneal357

Kason Hebert naw brother you’re off on that one. You’re right about there being some similarities but for 1 drum style and cadences played is from SWD not SU. 2nd -different colors of gold and blue. To my memory I don’t remember southern ever marching in those colors. Light blue yes but not dark blue. On the other hand those exact colors are SWD’s colors and has been for the last 30 or so years
