Broken Small Vise Restoration

- In this video I will be restoring a small broken jewellers / Watchmakers Vise. And to accompany it I will make a custom stand.
This restoration started. In the summer of 2019. As I was rummaging through old tools at a boot sale I stumbled across this vice. Even though I had never welded I still bought it for £2 with the intention of learning. Since then I have welded a couple of times however this was by far the most challenging.
I began this restoration by removing the bolt that was used to “fix” the vice. I attempted to remove the bolt with the impact screwdriver. This clearly didn’t work. I then enlisted the help of the grinder.
After a quick clean I soaked the parts in Evapo Rust over night. The next morning I cleaned all the parts and started preparing the surface for welding. In order to keep the parts levelled I clamped them together and placed the clamp in a vice. I then proceeded to heat the whole vice evenly in order to prevent cracking. Since I was welding cast iron I had to use nickel rods. At first the welding was rather challenging, however after many mistakes I managed to achieve a satisfactory result. Immediately after welding I covered the vice with sand to cool it down slowly (this should prevent cracking). After a few hours I removed the vice and began to grind all the excess material away. I then filled all the imperfection and sanded the parts before painting.
Now that the vice was complete I began making a stand. I used a block of what I presume is mahogany. After many hours of chiselling I applied 2 coats of varnish to bring out the natural beauty of the wood.
Finally after reassembly I screwed the vice to the stand and the project was complete.

Superb job, many would have seen the broken part and thrown it away. Brilliant job on the welding and I love the red paint job and the wooden block really finishes it off nicely. There’s something quite nostalgic about small vices like that one.

Nicely executed restoration. The colour is fine, even if some don't care for it. There's a lot to be said for a dedicated paint area with filters, if space allows. The welding is spot on -- nice job. That wood base is the star, in my opinion. I don't know the species, but it's beautiful. I'd change the Evaporust. It looks spent.
The wood looks like it might be one of the mahogany family, or a stand in. Sapele is a good candidate. Re. the Evaporust, isn't it good until it isn't? I mean if it's still removing rust....
Thanks, I’m glad you like it. The evapo rust is still relatively new. Only been used about 8 times. Plus I’m not going to spend another £60 to fill that small tub. It stilll has a lot of life. I’m pleased you like the base.
Beautiful work on a lovely piece. I have one of these in my clock repair shop. Watching you cut the base makes want to offer to turn the next one for you on the lathe!! But beautifully sharp paring chisels and boundless patience produced a wonderful working restoration. Well done.

Great video. I gave a similar one away to a friends son, just starting his tool collection. But found a square base like you started with was best as he can stand it on end. Bet your hand were sore after hours reshaping!.

Hugely impressed by the outcome of this one. The weld wasn't the prettiest :-) but after cleanup and filling you can't see it under the paint and isn't that what counts? And love the colour you chose, similar to the factory colour for old Parkinson vices which I've always been fond of.
Only thing I would have done that I think you didn't do is to repair the heads of the screws that had to be re-used. Not sure if you know the technique, I got it originally from gun repair vids if I'm remembering correctly. You peen the galled steel back, clean up the slot (with a hacksaw blade if necessary, if a file won't fit) and lastly file the outside to remove any burr. After a bit of light sanding or wire-wheel work a galled screw can look brand new again. Even some that look like they're right-offs can be saved this way.

Nice job. I'm impressed with how well that went back together considering the damage.
If I had to point out one thing I would suggest to watch out for, it's your angle grinder usage in the beginning. Mind you, this is nit-picky, and it's nothing structural so whatever, but when you cut the head off that bolt you also cut the casting. It seems obvious and kind of stupid to actually say this, but I've found it helps me significantly when using my angle grinder. I always remind myself that it will cut everything, not just what I want it to cut.
All this is meant to advise and assist, not to criticize. Again, thanks for the restoration, these are always fun to watch. :)
Oh, PS: I keep meaning to say this, but nice job on using the Evaporust correctly. I see so many complaints about the stuff, but they're all trying to put heavily rusted items in it and expecting results in like 20 minutes. Even the website says heavier rust could take 8 hours or more. Anyway, I'm impressed with you because you bothered to RTFM, and so few people seem to do that.
Uh... PPS: I rather like the wood and the red paint. Nice job on that, I see way too many blue and green tools. Those colors are fine, but variety is key in life. Also hand chiseling that wood? Ain't nobody got time for that! This is why we have power tools my friend. :P

Angle grinder is a rude thing. It may be slightly smaller than the angle grinder and a larger file.
I always screw the vise to the table, but this is a matter of taste.
Unexpected color. But this is a good combination with used wood.

Only 1 at a time. I don’t have enough space or time for 2 project at the same time.

I do use my phone. I transfer all my files to an iPad and edit on LumaFusion.
Why didn't you fill the weld voids with another weld, build up and then grind back to original profile rather than using plastic body filler?

I do need to make a note. Having your channel name on the screen is quite distracting.
I say this as a lot of restorers (including you) put words up on the screen and your channel name drew my attn several times.
