A lot of these coincide with simply being not good at your job / not trying hard or caring enough (which btw constitutes some career advice nowadays). With that said, many highest paid workplaces are inherently a race to the bottom ethics wise in terms of who gets the attention of bosses (who'd won that same race earlier!!) and the promotion. If everyone is highly driven and highly qualified (in reality, over-driven and over-qualified for the highly paid job at hand - b/c such an employer has had the pick of the litter when hiring), there being a surplus of qualification and drive and such effectively commoditizes and removes these qualities from consideration for promotion. (In reality of course the better person can still produce the better result but it's not like they give two people the same exact project to be done twice over & results compared in a qualitatively valid way). What's left is the "leadership qualities" which is in fact a euphemism for "do people like you, like in kindergarten" (like a colleague once very astutely put it - who'd later made MD, by the way). When "likability" is weaponized in a highly competitive environment, this video's signs of being edged out correspond to you ending up on the losing end of this particular contest. And if you re-double the volume and quality of your work, that just makes everyone resent you more - you're making it harder for everyone while not playing their accepted game. The game that made your bosses and their bosses etc, what & where they are today. So at best they'll be like "X is a great worker, it's too bad she's not a team player".
Like when a coworker who temporary moved to shift manager didn't notice me there's an important meeting coming on. Everyone knew except me. Later on my work manager yelled at me on the phone for not attending the meeting. I got so mad on both of them especially the one who didn't notice me. The manager took his words bqck after i got mad about him yelling at me on the phone. I was too nice and avoid arguments until that day.
I recognize these as well, especially from inexperienced and insecure managers. Not sure how they got the people manager position to start with. Peter's principle? This is not fun and I don't think there would be opportunities to advance my career under the circumstances. Any advise? Quit? Is it ever possible to bypass and get recognition I deserve?
The problem is that most have learned to be subtle yet extremely effective tactics. I have been sabotaged by 2 jealous co-workers in 2 separate depts within my company. One was a supervisor, the other is a flying monkey of the lead. The supervisor came to me in a "friendly" manner prior and said, "no one should have to do overtime." I said, "your right. No one should HAVE TO do overtime, but I want to." After that I was the enemy.
I entered grad school and within my office there is around 20 grad TA on a scholarship. I had a scholarship given to me by a certain professor, then I had another TA acting like he was my friend trying to tell me NOT to trust the professor who gave me the scholarship. And then he was trying to make appointments for me to get a schedule change. Then after a while the TA acted like he wasn't even my friend. These people are crazy. And they will try and take your scholarship away and try and screw you in every way.
I am actively dealing with a malicious chess master that I believe is executing a multi stage game that will result in my termination or resignation. I’m doing everything can to keep my nose down and do my job but it’s not working. No body sees it but me and I’m beginning to accept the inevitable. Hopefully I can make it through the year so it won’t look bad on a resume later.
This recently happened to me with several coworkers, and I resigned to spare myself from being terminated. I was constantly nitpicked for minor mistakes that everyone made. I was new to the job and the other employees had years on the job. Every time I made a minor mistake, someone would rush to tell our supervisor. It was tiring, and I felt I was being targeted. This was a salary job but I felt my sanity was worth more. I wish you well.
