Everything sounds right ,except one thing- There are more poor people then rich on Earth ,and they can not afford your solid wood furniture at all,so chipboard is a blessing for them to have.

There's an enormous difference between particle board (to be avoided at all cost) and solid wood covered by veneers, like you said, but I'd argue that there's a big difference as well between your veneered furniture and solid wood glue-ups that are stained and varnished together to preserve and protect the solid wood. Nothing will stand out and hold up for a lifetime like true solid wood furniture without veneers.

So interesting. You know your stuff. Would you be able to help me on what style my cabinet is if I sent a photo? I don't like the finish. It's so dark. But, if it were at all "special," I would not alter it. I don't want to make a mistake. As Larry David once said, "I respect wood."

If hardwood were to be used for all furnitures the world wouldn’t have any trees left, especially with today’s throw away culture. Recycled particle wood saves our planet. I’ll make the trade anytime.

Hilarious. Wood is renewable, and throw away culture is a product of low quality products. People don't throw away well made solid wood furniture. It last a lifetime.

Tropical rain forest wood are very hard beautiful and expensive, such as Meranti, keruing,Jati and kepas, wild forest trees, some in those days were use as railway slippers even mites won't able to ruin it, The problem is those chips wood or particle wood derive from old rubber trees, that unproductive anymore, rubber wood alone are good but the diameter usually small. As usual The Chinese make it into particle wood with diameter as big as it could and set up factories in poor cheap labor country. If the furniture is cheap and to be use for a couple of years then it is considerable

This guy is right; particleboard's worst enemy is moisture. If they would make particleboard like a fiberglass resin with a glue that was impervious to moisture and impregnated INTO the material (like a composite) it would last a long time. Unfortunately they use this cheapo Asian garbage glue that if you so much as sneezed on it, it would bubble up under the surface. Me and some friends built car speaker boxes out of particleboard back in the 80's and took the extra step to coat them in varnish and they still hold strong to this day My advice, if you have particle board furniture (such as a table, desk, nightstand, etc.) either have a piece of glass cut to cover the top of it or varnish it with multiple coats.

In your opinion is there worth or value in picking up older hardwood furniture even when it is in rough condition ? I have picked up a couple or 3 hard wood dressers from the 50's and or sixties they are rough . Although my thought were with the rarity and expense of hard wood furniture, added with the popular resurgence in retro and distressed furniture . That the dressers would pick up a few dollars as is . Or would it be better to slightly recondition by oiling or or replace drawer slide tracks and sanding and painting the dresser ? I am not sure the profit difference would be worth the time and money spent on reconditioning . Although if the hard wood retro dressers wouldn't really bring anything as is . Then doing a spruce up would be the only option ? Love to hear what you think Appreciate the video & info, God Bless

+timothy thomas it all depends on what you have and what needs to be done with it. i my self do not get into buying and selling of furniture. we restore furniture for other people. i have looked into it but there is just too much effort and not a lot of profit in it. Now there are some styles out there that people are after like you mid century modern from the 50's and 60's. like this greencycledesignla.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/img_3827.jpg?w=800. thats about the only thing out there worth putting the time into. I hope i helped.

You are very correct about name brand furniture companies no longer making furniture in the good old U.S.A.
I recently purchased a bedroom from a well know furniture store and it was not Ashley furniture !!!
The furniture company that made my bedroom set was Cresent Furniture company and in there profile it stated that it was an old family own company and had been making furniture for over 40 plus years in the United states .
The retail price for a queen size bed ,night stand ,and a dresser was about $4,200.00 and I purchased it when it was on sale for $2,200.00 .
I picked the off white finish instead of the cherry finish .
The set is beautiful but a year after I purchased the set,I happen to be moving the furniture around in the guest bedroom where the furniture was placed and to my shock and surprised ,the was a large sticker on the back of the dresser stating "made in Vietnam ".
I came across a French Bergere' wood are chair in a very up scale furniture store ,that was from a very up scale luxury furniture brand .
The chair had a retail price starting at $1,800.00 depending on the grade of fabric chosen ,
When I lifted up the seat cushion ,there on the seating deck was a tag stating "made in Vietnam "
You know your furniture quite well !!!
      Very informative .

It seems the effort that goes into making fake low quality furniture is more than the cost savings. I’m buying made in America furniture only!
