you, sir, are a lifesaver. three mechanics told me 'nothing we can do, good luck'
shitty mechanics
Thank you!!! It worked exactly like you said! I'm 68 years old and did it myself. I bought 3 cobalt drill sizes - 3/16, 1/4, and 3/8. I used titanium bits for in-between sizes. After the 3/8 size, I used a 7/16 and the lug nut came off!! Never had to use the 1/2! I noticed the cobalt bits drilled much better than the titanium. You really helped me. Thank you again.
Thank YOU~ You just saved me SO much TIME! I have a cheap set of tuner lugs that just snapped in half as your shown in the beginning of your video... Now being a mechanic of 12 years added with being one of those crazy drifting, racing, and going fast fanatic, I have seen and repaired alot of stud/lug issues but... Not once did I ever think to "just chill out and drill it out!"
Going to pick up a new set of drill bits today
Thank you for the video. I drilled 2 broken lugnuts off just like you showed.helped a ton!
Thanks, got a grand cherokee jeep and the same problem with 2 nuts that were over torqued. The engineer who designed theses p.o.s. caps over soft nuts should have his license revoked. I was planning to try an acetylene or plasma torch to heat the nuts up, of which I have experience with neither, so you probably helped me avoid a catastrophe or at least saved my rims. Thanks again, your video made my day.
Thanks a lot for this! I actually got a Milwaukee set of titanium drill bits and came off like butter! With the help of a T60 socket i hammered in once the hole was big enough for it to fit snug! And no need to replace studs!!
Thx for making this video and keeping it online. I’m having this exact problem and hopefully I’ll be able to git’r done a lot easier now.
Dude this is my whole problem with my chrysler 300c and the shop actually split my lugs and at that point i was already in it for 190 and nothing was done. You saved my a** man. Thank you!
I needed this. Dude is so soothing. hot long sweaty day. came in watched youtube of hammer jockey. had gatorade. went out to drill.
haven’t tried this method yet but just wanted to say thanks for the video! i’ve been trying to get this problem fixed for a while now and out of all the ideas and prices thrown at me.. i think this video helped the most! 🙌🏽 thanks for the help! 🤘🏽
Thanks for the video! Just snapped a lug off on my 3500. Was a bit worried till I found this
Wow nice. Didnt take a whole hour like someone did for me on the westcoast when a lug broke in half on a 240sx. Thanks..
Thanks, this worked. Kids, listen carefully when he makes the comment about having a good quality bit. I was using Titanium ones from Harbor Freight, and broke two, but still continued to make slow progress with other sizes. The next day, I went and dropped 50 bucks for a set of COBALT bits from the Milwaukee line. It still took me a half hour, but the difference was very noticeable. I don't know if it's necessary, but I read something shopping for them online that you're supposed to spray machine oil, WD40 or some kind of lubricant to protect the bits when drilling into hard metals. I would stop and spray the stud every so often- not sure if it's needed but figured I would pass it along. Good luck, you can do it!
Im glad that my video is reaching out to so many people! Yes oil is highly recommended! Thanks for watching and commenting!!
@@Hammerjockeyrepair I lost my locking lug nut key and no other alternatives are working so I need to drill out all 4 lugs on the 4 rims now so this isn't just for broken lugs its for people that lose their lug nut key to I'm assuming..
Thanks for this video my 94 zj 5.2 lug broke and I was freaking out because I'm redoing the rear end this helped a ton man yhanks
Yup! Dam Chrysler. Ran to Home Depot at 9:50 before they closed to purchase 2 sets of drill bits. Worked like a charm. Thank you
Good day to you Sir, just wanted to thank you for this video. It help me remove the lug nut.Stay safe.- from the Philippines
Yeah thanks man. First time across this problem. Got to go buy a new and good drill!
Yep. Patience is your friend here. Bad thing is if you wrench enough on vehicles it's so easy to lose your patience and your mind and then the loud naughty words come out. Guilty! 😆 great video.
Thanks, knowing to go from small to big is a big help
Good tip on the drill out! Now, I have a tip for you.... lower the wheel on a block to hold it from moving around while you are drilling OR you will snap a good bit when it jams.
Saved my life! Thank you sir!👍🏻
I will try that! Thanks... i was getting sweaty 🤣🔥
Thank you, this saved me a lot of money!
Hey mate! Thank you so much for this video. Ive just followed your instructions and what do you know that pesky stripped wheel nut rock tight on my Jeep popped right off. Whew! Morale of the story dont let people use airguns to put wheel nut on - they are far to tight. God bless you and yours!!
This happened to me yesterday.my mechanic next door had never seen this happen and didnt know what to do.i found your video and gonna give it ago today.wish me luck.
Hell ya man. I was thinking drilling was best and this video encouraged me to do it. Success - on my own Jeep Cherokee. Thanks
You've calmed my nerves, thank you.
Top tip... worked for me, many thanks my friend
Used a 9/16 hole saw, lug guided it nicely. Took 10 minutes and 1/2 can WD-40. Ruined lug, managed to replace without removing hub (gotta find clear point). Thank you much for ideas! Oh, managed to do with dewalt battery drill, 2 batteries.
Great video, thanks alot. Did one yesterday but it took over an hour. I have another one to do today. I hope it goes as good as yours did. Thanks again
Glazier : thumbs up to u bro, gotta do my Audi 5, broke 2 of them ,
Just did this thanks so much worked so well tho I didn't have the best drill bits what are the best drills for this job?
Amazing just the video I needed. Thank you!
good job man!......very helpful. keep it up
Thanks fam! Now I can make sure tire shop don't mess up my wheels! Doing this myself
Are you drilling inward or outward?
Thx Brother, this really helped me
Hey what's your thoughts about using a dewalt 21 volt brush less hammer drill extended battery? Your thoughts about the lug nut extractor with teeth? Also could you add the elapsed work time to viedo? One more your thoughts on the Tread ripper tool, I know it's $200.00 or so. Thanks again.
Thank You !!👍😎☺️
I almost burned my truck down but this video saved the day lmao 😆
Ho ho ho.. without any wd40 son.. you're a kind boy, what u want for xmas?
Amazing work helped me in a pinch. Subbed and liked and will share.
I make bushings to help guide the drills. But for a cheap easy way to go, Get a socket 1/2 drive that snug fits the counter bore to help keep last bit straight.
Nice work brother!
Rebuilt drill.good man
Thank u so much 👍
Thanks this help me so much
Thank You sir !
Great job bro I have one the same way
You gave me the confidence, thank you. Dad
Dude!! You just saved my finances...I had 3 welders offer to weld a smaller nut onto my broken lug and I was skeptical. Just going to drill it out and replace the stud after. Going to use a bosch cobalt set of bits. Was almost having a panic attack lol
with good drill bits you will have no issue. Start with 3/16" dead center and work your way up. If I had my worktruck here with the good bits this video would have been 30 seconds!
5 minutes may be a little optimistic, but this also works great if you have a seized lug nut (well over 300 foot-pounds of torque would not break it lose, and finally the outside of the nut stripped in my case.) If you have good wheels and don't want to damage them, the lug nuts are recessed, and you can get access to the end of the wheel stud, this works great - much better than bashing and torching.
I was surprised that the stud is made of a very mild steel - easy to drill, especially if you lubricate good bits with some oil periodically. Took less than 30 minutes (I had to drill out almost 3/4 inch of stud), and a lot less frustrating than breaking sockets and nut removers.
Many thanks to Hammerjockey for the Video!
You are not using an old wood tool. Old has a key Chuck. Maybe you meant to say wore-out it is not old. Old stuff is direct-drive just like the picture on your keyless Chuck that has a direct-drive selection. Direct drive along always break your bit or your wrist. As you notice your bits are getting doll on high-speed use low and hang on to it I'll show you have more control aiming at the whole because you're not using the Wimpy variable grip. Use low gear. 2nd gear is for mixing paint buffing your headlight. If you have a cheap battery drill it won't hurt anything except its own Gears and Battery the worst thing about this whole project is if you break a bit off in the hole your up a creek without a paddle. Go get a beer or your friend with a cutting torch
Awesome thank you so much!
This job would have been better if I had sharp bits at the time, but I was using what I had and still managed to get it done!
For drilling like this I get some new Cobalt bits. They're voracious MoFro's. Makes it too easy. And the cobalt bits are still in my kit for other uses... Thanks for making the video, great information.
Can you do mine! I’ve got my bits ordered! Thanks for the video
How to replace the stud ?
You've drilled a hundred studs? Heh...
your the man!!!
What kind of bits are these? Cobalt?
Thanks. Great work. New sub
gracias I check this morning
work great
cheers dude 🤘🏻
Definitely helped.
I dont know how you guys to it so easily. I have a Chevrolet captiva and been trying to drill the stud out for two days. Have used Titanium and Cobalt bits and they seem to just keep spinning without removing any metal. Almost like drilling for 4 hours just to get a small indentation. Any suggestion? I am going to try a carbide tipped drill bit if i cant get it out with the bits i have.
Have you started with a small bit first? Something like 1/8 inch?
my car at tire shop now, going to show them this--- Thanks
You the MAN💯💯💯💯💯👍👍👍👍👍
Remember: When drilling; use lower rpm's.
Why?
Because the speed will wear the bits out faster and you also have to use some pressure.
It seems this is common on jeeps. Tire shop snapped mine earlier on my 95 zj. Guess im drillin overnight.
I used a step bit a smaller one and working my way up to a bigger one now
My local tire shops, 2 of them couldn't get my stripped bolts off. They sent me to another shop that was charging $170 per hour to do what you showed in this video, drilling it out. I had 2 stripped bolts. They could give me no estimates on how long it would take. Only promised me it would be costly. I will be trying an extractor but should that fail will use this video.
This is a diy tho… u dont have any friends with drills? Shops will 100% of the time over charge you.
@@zeru4600 $23 extractor set did the trick. It was super tight, I had to stand on breaker bar to loosen one of them. I figure I saved myself close to $500 doing myself and I get to brag that two tire shops tried to get bolts off and I succeeded. Extractor ruined the bolts but worked well. Two new lug bolts only cost $14
Did you have to replace the stud itself doing this?
Thank you, I'll do that tomorrow after buying the drill bits, I'm sure you gave an excellent idea 👍🛻
Use a 1/2” center drill with a bit of fluid one bit done!
What drill bits are those
Looks like I should have went small to big. Started off with the biggest one and I hit a wall. Gonna try it this way and see if it works.
Are you drilling off the lug nut as in drilling directly on the lug nut or drilling on the tire stud and then replacing it after? Thank you!!
Drilled the stud and nut completely out and replaced them both
that didn't look easy but you did accomplish your goal.
I had a great run with my makitas, 10 plus years, got a hardon everytime i used my impact, but then my son came of age and bought all makita tools as well, then the prick took all my batteries and swaped them with his dead ones, then i said fuckem, i took the plunge and replaced all my battery operated makitas with milwaukee's m18 line, i have to say, when my makita impact that sits on the bench cant do it, i reach for the Milwaukee and bam, astounding difference! Like i said, had a good run with the makitas, but the Milwaukee tools are noticeably better. If and when bro, dont hesitate to try the Milwaukee's.
Instead of destroying the stud, Grab an exctractor socket. I had one car i broke a few bits on till i grabbed my exctractor tool and a socket that fit on that and my giant breaker and about 250-320lb force of torque it finally ripped the dam lug nut off the tire. I was super lucky that i didnt have to replace the stud.
It wasn’t due to a frozen lug nut, this was a case where the entire hex section broke right off, there was no possibility of getting it off without drilling. You know the tapered part of the lugnut at the bottom that meets the wheel? That’s the part that was left on the stud, the rest of the lugnut broke off.

@@Hammerjockeyrepair I guess it depends on how much nut is left. If theres even a few MM left, a socket exctractor like this will take it out ( destroying the nut in the process as well) www.amazon.ca/Irwin-Tools-53915-21mm-Extractor/dp/B0027S98EC/ref=asc_df_B0027S98EC/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=292944199160&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9822994297098487148&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000889&hvtargid=pla-625670072117&psc=1 These things bite into what ever metals left and rip it off the threads. I've had them brake bolts locked on exhausts/headers/lug nuts. You name it.
Stupid question; but do you have to replace the stud once you drill it like that?
neo0501 yes. But you simply take a hammer and whack it in. Put new stud on and make sure it’s tight lol
Thanks mate. Guess what I’m doing today ✌🏽✌🏽
good shit!
i was using a 1/2" drill with a BIG whole cutter and it caught so the drill wanted to turn almost broke my wrist.
meTimetraveler broke my wrist a while back, not using a drill was mountain biking but even after almost a year now still dont have full strength or durability in my wrist and have had a few times where my drill kicked on me (carpenter) so as much as i can i try to use a impact driver, many companies make drill buts with a 1/8th hex bit, not as quick or efficient but for some jobs its better for my personal use. Just thought id share
Oddly, exactly my situation. Same car different color
What kind of bits are good for this kind of work. I am having to do it myself sometime this coming week
Honestly any new drill bits will do a good job, I was using whatever junk I had laying around in the shop to get it done. Don’t get cheapy drill bits, go for the Milwaukee or dewalt ones at Home Depot Atleast, if you go to harbor freight go for the Hercules ones.
Best of luck to ya!
Been doing this for 5 hrs still won't break lose
You need to drill deeper than the lug nut and step up to larger bits until the nut falls off
What drill bits did you end up using? I'm using a DeWalt drill with DeWalt Cobalt drill bits and I'm having a tough time. I got one out in about an hour's time but I have 8 more to go. Any advice?
do you have a fastenal anywhere near you? Are you starting off with a small bit like 1/8" or 3/16"?
I have one of those near me. I started with a 3/16. I tried a few different types of drill bits but none of them were that effective
Do you have to buy a new stud after you drill everything?
Yes. They’re between $1-$5 depending on the vehicle
I tried to drill it off doesnt work
Anyway to remove it without getting rid of the stud?
Not when the nut is that shallow, a replacement stud is only a few dollars and takes no time to replace
I burn them out with torch. Never any damage to wheel, just spray with mig anti splater spray. Much faster.
Matthew Westover for sure! I’ve also put copper pipe over the lug to torch out. I just put this video out so the average joe with basic crap bits and a drill sees they can get the job done. After seeing videos of people using cutoff wheels and hatchets, I had to
I’m not putting you done for it just a thought
Matthew Westover I know you weren’t. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Cool thanks
Well... I did not get the good bits . I beat myself to death . I went and bought good bits cut through it like butter. Everything worked out . GET THE RIGHT TOOLS ! Trust me. Thank you . I appreciate you posting this.
What bits did you buy?
I was skeptical. Hardened steel is no joke. I went out and bought new cobalt steel bits and some thread cutting oil. The first hole is the hardest to go. Don't force it. Take a few breaks and use plenty of oil. I used a shop vac to keep my area free of chips. Each size up went easier and faster. Total time was 30 minutes. Thanks!
Yeah same problem with a dodge I’m working on... used nut extractors and managed to break two lug nuts and after seeing this I’m happy ... because I was about to saw the wheel in pieces
now just need to replace the stud
thats the easy part. Once the wheel and brake drum is off, smack the old wheel stud into the hub, itll pop right out and slide the new one in. Use the lugnut on wheel to seat the stud all the way back in
what if my lug nut broke at the seat but i have the full stud still?
That’s what caused us to make this video! The part the socket fits on snapped off leaving just the seat/tapered part of the nut locking the wheel on. “Simply” drill through the entire stud lol. Start off with like a 3/16” bit direct center and work your way up
Chrysler dodge n jeeps lug nuts always get stuck never had this problem with ford chevy or nissan
What do you do when the tip of the second drill bit snaps off as you back out.
hope youve got a welder or a welder friend to weld something to that drill bit and get er out lol
My lug nut looks very similar to this, does this work for any car any type of rims?
Yes
Hammerjockey Radios thanks so much for replying. I’m a female and this happened on a jauguar XJ last night it was actually rusted underneath and the tire guy couldn’t get some of the nuts off! Over tightened I’m sure. Im just so worried i won’t get the flat tire off without someone charging me up or breaking the stud and I would have to then buy the whole hub assembly because you can’t just change the stud on those cars...ugh all this from a pothole! but your video gave me some hope someone will get the flat tire off
What can you do if a piece of the drill bit gets stuck in the lug nut? I can't get my lug nut out as long as that bit is stuck in there.
Well now youre at a spot where you need to get to someone who can deal with it with an oxy acetelyne torch and melt it off. Or beat it with a punch and see if you can get the bit out
Just did that myself and it was only 1/8 inch bit because I was step Drilling. I did another post to somebody said Put it on 2nd gear and go for it no you put the clutch on light duty have a a partner squirt your bit while you are Drilling. It doesn't matter how big are small a broken bit go get a beer and call your friend with a torch go slow grasshopper and set the clutch only heavy enough to do the job
I have a stripped stud. Lug nut is frozen to the stud. Been trying to drill out my truck lug nut and it just isn't happening. New titanium bits too. What to do??
Melt it off
What are the best type of bits you use for this?
My service truck has my good bits in it and theyre a mix of the milwaukee impact ones, or the non colored bits, almost look like dull chrome from my local fastenal, Im not sure of a brand on those, but they work great. Next job I have like this Ill do with good bits so you all see it takes about 12 seconds of drilling and youre through!
@@Hammerjockeyrepair thanks
