Thank you for this great video, full of useful information. I've successfully, now setup my new NAS 920+ with DDNS and Port forwarded my router to the correct static ip address of my NAS. One further thing I've done, more of a security thing is I've changed the ports 5000 & 5001 to one's of my own choice, as these are very well known. Hi Fórika, You should be able to mount an SMB share like you normally would but you'll need to enable port forwarding of port 139 (I believe) to get that working. Check out Synology's "What network ports are used by DSM services?" webpage for details -> kb.synology.com/en-me/DSM/tutorial/What_network_ports_are_used_by_Synology_services. However, I'd recommend that you use Synology Drive to remotely access files. No one has mentioned this, but can we use any external port number (from 1 to 65535) and map it to the internal port number. Example, external port 53423 and internal port 5000. Would this provide any benefit, compared to external port 5000, internal port 5000 ?
You can definitely do what you mentioned and it could provide you some additional security through obscurity. Ports 5000 and 5001 are the default ports for DSM and likely a target of hackers scanning externally exposed ports. Having something different would definitely be beneficial. Great question!!

Hi @occasionalriders1885, For sure... You can setup a VPN server using DDNS and port forwarding. Regarding your router setup question, I actually needed to setup port forwarding directly from my router because it wasn't setup with uPnP and wasn't listed in the router list so I basically closed down the router setup that I was going through in DSM and then displayed the port forwarding I setup on my router directly. Could you pls tell will there be the acces to you nas when you inside your local network? I mean like using quickconnect, when you inside it works directly with maximum speed, when you outside it still works remotely. As far as i can understand you cannot do the same thing with DDNS. And if so is there an option to somehow set two links for every app. When you come home it switches to local ip, when you out - DDNS?
@eugenekoiner You should be able the access your NAS inside your local network with just the external IP address (no need switching to an internal IP address) if your router supports loopback nat or hairpin nat. Hi, great video. But I have a question I understood that ddns would deal with Dynamic IPs. Mine is not updating for some reason. It worked fine yesterday, but my IP changed today and I lost access to the NAS externally. Am I missing something, can you help?

Regarding your issue, it sounds to me like you didn't check the box to Enable Heartbeat when setting up DDNS (see the Setup DDNS Within DSM 7 section of the video). That would be a reason why your IP didn't get updated. Hopefully that does the trick? Good luck!!
@Digital Aloha unfortunately I did. But I think I found the issue. I was updating, but the port forwarding on my router wasn't updating correctly. I have now reserved the ip on my network, so now only the external is dynamic. I'm hoping that fixes it :) Thanks for the reply.

Hi Sergio, You're welcome and thank you for your input on the video! Regarding your question, I have limited experience with uPnP routers, but with the ones that I've used it sometimes seems the port opened on the router for external access that is linked to the port on the Synology NAS may not be a one to one match. For instance, you may see a random high port number port forwarded to DSM port 5000 or 5001 for example. In these situation you should just confirm what ports are mapped to your Synology NAS and use those. Or you could disable uPnP and manually assign ports to your specifications. Hope this helps? It was indeed a high number (like 5000 to 51947), so in the router configuration settings in the NAS I just created a custom port forwarding rule - 5000 to 5000 and 5001 to 5001. I just setup my NAS in the past month or so for my video production business, so all of this is quite foreign to me, but your videos have been super helpful so THANK YOU!!!
Thank you for your helpful tutorial, now I can access Synology server using cellular connection from phone only but, I cannot access the server if I'm using any WiFi outside of my home (where the NAS connected all the time). Do you have any suggestion to do? sometimes I want to access the server from my parent house.
Would connecting my remote PCs to the NAS this method make my drive syncs faster VS using the standard quick connect method? If so, by how much? I have fiber connections on both ends and need faster speeds. I'm currently getting between 500KB/s - 1MB/s. Would really appreciate the input. Thanks!
Hi Kurt, generally if you are using DDNS and Port Forwarding you'd get the fastest speeds because your remote PC will connect directly to your NAS. As for how much faster that depends. QuickConnect does a few different things under the hood to establish connections that it is hard to really say. Have a look at my QuickConnect video for more details on what QuickConnect does to establish a connection if you'd like -> ua-cam.com/video/L5a7d3NMVbo/v-deo.html. You've also inspired me to research how to quantify speeds from QuickConnect vs DDNS and Port Forwarding. Hopefully I'll be able to release a video on that topic in the future. Be carefull with upnp. Just spent 1 hour because there was a conflict. My router didn't forward the ports correctly and only after I set them manually in the router it worked
Hi dominik, Thanks for the warning on upnp and I'm glad you got your router setup resolved!! I personally found some oddness with upnp as well so generally I've been using manual port forwarding in my setups.

From my experience I've found that tweaks may need to be done in the Synology firewall and/or in the port forwarding setup on the router the Synology NAS is behind. You really make good videos but when you get an error its hard to know what to do next. I cant setup openvpn, quickconnect or ddns. Always i get a connection error. Can you help me and do you maybe know why i always get these errors?

If i use DynDns and i set up for example my Synology Photos App on my smartphne. Ill put in the DomainName i chose for my DDNS. So far i understand everything. What i dont understand is what happens when i am at home with WIFI... Does the App know its in Wifi and uses the LAN connection. Or does it go over the internet even if im in WIFI? That would greatly impact speed?!
Hi Kevin, Good question! The answer actually depends on your router and if it supports hairpin or loopback NAT which is is a feature that allows you to access a service through the WAN IP address from within your local network. If your router does support this feature then you should be able to your DDNS hostname regardless of where you are located. Hope this helps and good luck with your setup!!

Could it be that the port number of the Unifi Router is the same as your Synology NAS? That is one reason why it would load your Unifi Router login page.

Also, could you please tell me how, after your settings, can I save my username and password access of my DSM 7.0 into Chrome via a local access with the NAS IP 192.168.1.XXX. (not remoted)? It seems that redirection to HTTP to HTTPS makes the impossibly to save username and password into Chrome when I want to enter and work with my Synology at home. That point makes me crazy. Do you have a solution, or at least a clue?

Maybe the option to save passwords isn't enabled in Chrome or for some reason the IP address was configured to never save passwords in the past? Hi Gabriel, this seems to be a common problem although one I haven't experienced. Google returns a lot of results but nothing really conclusive. What you might want to do (from what I've read) is not use "Set up router" and configure port forwarding manually on your router. Hi premiumbitter, you could access your Synology folders through Finder (I'm assuming you mean through an SMB or CIFS share), but you'd need to port forward the specific port that you want to access. Here is a link from Synology listing the network ports used by DSM services - kb.synology.com/en-me/DSM/tutorial/What_network_ports_are_used_by_Synology_services. I'm also unclear of how you access Synology folders from Finder using QuickConnect. How do you do that? As for the advantage of using DDNS and port forwarding vs QuickConnect it would definitely be speed. DDNS and port forwarding would always be a direct connection between client and host, whereas, QuickConnect figures out the "best path" and may use relay servers that may significantly slow down your connection to the NAS. Hi. Was trying to setup my Synology that way, but with no result. I'm afraid I don't have an external IP address assigned to my router by the internet provider. Is there any way I can make my NAS accessable externaly? The Synology "quickconnect" option works fine, but it's a bit limited to some functionality, so I'd prefer to use DDNS to have full access to for example use the Active Directory.
Hi Dawid, I don't think you can use DDNS and port forwarding if your ISP doesn't provide you an external IP address to link to, but if QuickConnect works I'd suggest you try out TailScale which I have a video on -> ua-cam.com/video/x7SVbkHaEaA/v-deo.html. TailScale works similarly to QuickConnect but doesn't limit you like QuickConnect (you'll have full access to services running on your Synology NAS). You can also setup your Synology NAS as an Exit Node to allow your client to access other devices on your LAN (my TailScale video doesn't cover setting up an Exit Node but that may be a topic for a future video... In this setup using a good password and enabling 2-Factor Authentication will make the setup more secure because the ports that are forwarded are always open and accessible over the Internet. Further question on this question. If I want to have a client be able to open SMB shares remotely via windows, is it sufficient to replace the internal IP in the network path of the share with the DDNS address or are there more steps needed?
@@RRWerken If the SMB port is exposed through your client's firewall through port forwarding you should be able to use the DDNS address in the network path to access the SMB share remotely. I didn't mention this in my earlier comment, but I would discourage exposing SMB externally and use a VPN instead. Basically your client would VPN into the remote location and then mount the SMB share as if they were internal to their network. I have a bunch of videos on setting up a VPN on a Synology NAS that you could reference. Hope this helps and good luck with your setup!
Hi KINGLIFER, Not exactly sure what you mean by not secured, but if you are using a VPN to connect from a device to your Synology NAS and using the VPN to communicate with your NAS then it is over a secured connection and you should be fine. Hi KINGLIFER, You should be able to just disable the VPN and that should do the trick, but I don't think a VPN running on a Synology NAS conflicts with DDNS and port forwarding. How are you determining that your connection isn't secured?
Hopefully you find a solution!! There are a lot of steps in setting up DDNS and port forwarding to even offer a random suggestion, but I'd recommend going through the video a couple of times, if needed, and make sure you didn't miss any of the steps. Good luck!!
@@digital_aloha I've been working with tech support who says it's working. however when I try it I get the log in prompts and when I put it in it says invalid. Even tried copy & paste. Quick connect works sometimes!

New Synology NAS user here. I have configured everything I've seen I have to do to be able to acces via DDSM using https. DSM 7.2 - I can accés via quickconnect and via the smartphone APPs that use quickconnect. It works with my local network and on the internet. In my local network, the https appears crossed out and Chrome says the certificate isn't valid. - In the DDNS tab, I have a line with Synology as service provider and my URL (as an example: my-nas.synology-me). It appears with my public IP adress (i do NOT have CGNAT, so that's okay), and "Normal" as status. - For testing purposes, i have UPnP IGd enabled in my router so the NAS can create all the portforwarding it needs. I intend to close it and manually port forward when I make it work. - In the routing config tab of DSM, i have the usual quickconnect port forward (443, 80, 6690 to random routing ports) and i have added 5000 and 5001. If I test connection everythings goes as OK. - When I try to acces via my-nas.synology-me, or my-nas.synology-me, or my-nas.synology-me:5001, or my-nas.synology-me:5000, nothing happens. It keeps charging until it time outs. - I have 3 certificates in the Certificate tab of my DSM: Synology, my-nas.direct.quickconnect.to, and my-nas.synology.me (RSA/ECC) Synology DDNS Certificate. In config, the my-nas.synology.me certificate is set by default in every service except quickconnect, where it has the quickconnect certificate (and there's no dropdown list). - I have a plex server working properly in the local and external network if that can be of any help understanding what's happening. Can anyone see something I am not seeing?
Worth noting the letsencrypt process requires port 80 on the NAS to be open so they can verify the IP.

Regarding your question, I have limited experience with uPnP routers, but with the ones that I've used it sometimes seems the port opened on the router for external access that is linked to the port on the Synology NAS may not be a one to one match. For instance, you may see a random high port number port forwarded to DSM port 5000 or 5001 for example. In these situation you should just confirm what ports are mapped to your Synology NAS and use those. Or you could disable uPnP and manually assign ports to your specifications.

@@digital_aloha Ahh you are a legend!! It was indeed a high number (like 5000 to 51947), so in the router configuration settings in the NAS I just created a custom port forwarding rule - 5000 to 5000 and 5001 to 5001.

Hi Kurt, generally if you are using DDNS and Port Forwarding you'd get the fastest speeds because your remote PC will connect directly to your NAS. As for how much faster that depends. QuickConnect does a few different things under the hood to establish connections that it is hard to really say. Be carefull with upnp. Just spent 1 hour because there was a conflict. My router didn't forward the ports correctly and only after I set them manually in the router it worked

You really make good videos but when you get an error its hard to know what to do next. I cant setup openvpn, quickconnect or ddns. Always i get a connection error. Can you help me and do you maybe know why i always get these errors?

If i use DynDns and i set up for example my Synology Photos App on my smartphne. Ill put in the DomainName i chose for my DDNS. So far i understand everything.
What i dont understand is what happens when i am at home with WIFI... Does the App know its in Wifi and uses the LAN connection. Or does it go over the internet even if im in WIFI? That would greatly impact speed?!
Hi Kevin, Good question! The answer actually depends on your router and if it supports hairpin or loopback NAT which is is a feature that allows you to access a service through the WAN IP address from within your local network. If your router does support this feature then you should be able to your DDNS hostname regardless of where you are located. Hope this helps and good luck with your setup!!

Hi. I did the same port forwarding on my Unifi Dream router and got forwarded staright to my Unifi log in page instead of my Synology Nas. What settings could I have done incorrectly?
Could it be that the port number of the Unifi Router is the same as your Synology NAS? That is one reason why it would load your Unifi Router login page.

Also, could you please tell me how, after your settings, can I save my username and password access of my DSM 7.0 into Chrome via a local access with the NAS IP 192.168.1.XXX. (not remoted)? It seems that redirection to HTTP to HTTPS makes the impossibly to save username and password into Chrome when I want to enter and work with my Synology at home. That point makes me crazy. Do you have a solution, or at least a clue?

Maybe the option to save passwords isn't enabled in Chrome or for some reason the IP address was configured to never save passwords in the past? Hi Gabriel, this seems to be a common problem although one I haven't experienced. Google returns a lot of results but nothing really conclusive. What you might want to do (from what I've read) is not use "Set up router" and configure port forwarding manually on your router. Good question!! I believe you can have a single DDNS per provider, but you can setup another DDNS entry for another provider. Good luck in your setup.
Does this not allow you to access your Synology folders from Finder? If not, what is the advantage of this approach over just using quickconnect?
Hi premiumbitter, you could access your Synology folders through Finder (I'm assuming you mean through an SMB or CIFS share), but you'd need to port forward the specific port that you want to access. I'm also unclear of how you access Synology folders from Finder using QuickConnect. How do you do that?
As for the advantage of using DDNS and port forwarding vs QuickConnect it would definitely be speed. DDNS and port forwarding would always be a direct connection between client and host, whereas, QuickConnect figures out the "best path" and may use relay servers that may significantly slow down your connection to the NAS.

Hi. Was trying to setup my Synology that way, but with no result. I'm afraid I don't have an external IP address assigned to my router by the internet provider. Is there any way I can make my NAS accessable externaly? The Synology "quickconnect" option works fine, but it's a bit limited to some functionality, so I'd prefer to use DDNS to have full access to for example use the Active Directory.
Hi Dawid, I don't think you can use DDNS and port forwarding if your ISP doesn't provide you an external IP address to link to, but if QuickConnect works I'd suggest you try out TailScale which I have a video on -> ua-cam.com/video/x7SVbkHaEaA/v-deo.html. TailScale works similarly to QuickConnect but doesn't limit you like QuickConnect (you'll have full access to services running on your Synology NAS). You can also setup your Synology NAS as an Exit Node to allow your client to access other devices on your LAN (my TailScale video doesn't cover setting up an Exit Node but that may be a topic for a future video... In this setup using a good password and enabling 2-Factor Authentication will make the setup more secure because the ports that are forwarded are always open and accessible over the Internet. I'd combine the setup from this video with the information from one of these videos (ua-cam.com/video/BP6pI0XAb5k/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/vFpsROl_nuk/v-deo.html) to setup 2-Factor Authentication. If I want to have a client be able to open SMB shares remotely via windows, is it sufficient to replace the internal IP in the network path of the share with the DDNS address or are there more steps needed?
@@RRWerken If the SMB port is exposed through your client's firewall through port forwarding you should be able to use the DDNS address in the network path to access the SMB share remotely.
I didn't mention this in my earlier comment, but I would discourage exposing SMB externally and use a VPN instead. Basically your client would VPN into the remote location and then mount the SMB share as if they were internal to their network. I have a bunch of videos on setting up a VPN on a Synology NAS that you could reference. Hope this helps and good luck with your setup!

Hi KINGLIFER, Not exactly sure what you mean by not secured, but if you are using a VPN to connect from a device to your Synology NAS and using the VPN to communicate with your NAS then it is over a secured connection and you should be fine. Hi KINGLIFER, You should be able to just disable the VPN and that should do the trick, but I don't think a VPN running on a Synology NAS conflicts with DDNS and port forwarding. How are you determining that your connection isn't secured?

Hopefully you find a solution!! There are a lot of steps in setting up DDNS and port forwarding to even offer a random suggestion, but I'd recommend going through the video a couple of times, if needed, and make sure you didn't miss any of the steps. Good luck!!

New Synology NAS user here. I have configured everything I've seen I have to do to be able to acces via DDSM using https. DSM 7.2
- I can accés via quickconnect and via the smartphone APPs that use quickconnect. It works with my local network and on the internet. In my local network, the https appears crossed out and Chrome says the certificate isn't valid.
- In the DDNS tab, I have a line with Synology as service provider and my URL (as an example: my-nas.synology-me). It appears with my public IP adress (i do NOT have CGNAT, so that's okay), and "Normal" as status.
- For testing purposes, i have UPnP IGd enabled in my router so the NAS can create all the portforwarding it needs. I intend to close it and manually port forward when I make it work.
- In the routing config tab of DSM, i have the usual quickconnect port forward (443, 80, 6690 to random routing ports) and i have added 5000 and 5001. If I test connection everythings goes as OK.
- When I try to acces via my-nas.synology-me, or my-nas.synology-me, or my-nas.synology-me:5001, or my-nas.synology-me:5000, nothing happens. It keeps charging until it time outs.
- I have 3 certificates in the Certificate tab of my DSM: Synology, my-nas.direct.quickconnect.to, and my-nas.synology.me (RSA/ECC) Synology DDNS Certificate. In config, the my-nas.synology.me certificate is set by default in every service except quickconnect, where it has the quickconnect certificate (and there's no dropdown list).
- I have a plex server working properly in the local and external network if that can be of any help understanding what's happening.
Can anyone see something I am not seeing?
