I've been trying to find a way for a long time to point my google domain to my Synology NAS DiskStation and was just about to throw in the towel till i came across your video tutorial this morning great video well explained keep up the good work
Awesome video! What's funny is I have folks that do this for me at the office. I installed a DS630slim at home, and this was a great resource. THANK YOU!
Liked yes! Heck, loved it. I’m getting into all this life in life😊. Hope to want to waio g on setting up my DS220J w Wordpress and Imagely pulsing to build a simple photo site for my blog and images. Will start searching your videos for more good stuff. Thanks again Scott
PLEASE HELP! Lets encrypt fails. I followed through tutorial, which got my DDNS and port forward working with my new google domain name. Letsencrypt fails, so I temporarily disabled firewall on router and synology, tried LE again... fail. I don't know what to try now. @ 1:05 My router doesn't have this static route.
Could you do a video on IPv6? Many ISPs _(in Europe at least)_ only provide IPv6 DS-Lite Internet connections and refuse to provide an IPv4 address, unless you choose a business plan _(where some ISPs require that you are an actual registered business to get such a contract)_ . So it would be very helpful to know how to setup an USG and Edge Router for IPv6 DS-Lite connections, and how to configure remote access to i.e. a webserver, DynDNS, etc. :)
useful video. So the benefit of having a secure connection to a synology hosted DNS is the ability to easily create additional hosts which also support secure connections remotely? So, you received a green padlock for synology1, but are you able to get a green padlock for other hosts on your network based on entries in your synology name server? Would be good if you could have showed this..
Thanks mate, really good video, I did everything, I even purchased proper certification. The only thing I missed was setting all the services to the ssl I purchased thanks again
Great video - learnt a lot ! Thanks. THough I must have done something wrong because when I fwd 80 from my edge to my synology, I seem to have no longer access to my edge GUI. Anyone an idea what happened ? Thanks in advance !
Willie, does the dns must be forwarded from the dns server app only or can it also be done from within the Google domain registrar dashboard.. or is it that the same thing.
The port 80 forwarding is not necessary to auto renew LE cert. At least I don't do it, and it renews just fine by itself. I use Synologys DDNS though, so that's probably the reason.
Thanks Willie! This is awesome. I'm tired of waiting for either my ER-X or USG getting a proper reverse & forward DNS service. This solves *EVERYTHING*!!! I'm assuming that if you had a second Synology you could set up a slave DNS? Could you do that in a video sometime too? (future request)
I have a Synology 918 nas and what to host my own website from it. I have a ipage account whom provide my domain name. Do I follow this tips in this video to run my own webpage and will the rest of my nas be secure? Thanks Damian
Hey Willie, any advice on how to do this when I have multiple synology's? I only have 1 public IP and can only port forward a specific port to one internal host. So if 80 needs to be forwarded on each other them for example for Lets Encrypt to work, Im at a loss....
What if you do not have an edgemax router? Synology has a way to install a certificate on their box. If there is a router and a modem behind that, should it still be installed on the Synology?
I'm a beginner in all this so my question is next. Would I get any benefit from adding SSL certificate as I already have restricted and activated OpenVPN (client, server certificates) over my router. So is that enough (I think it is)...and what would I gain with SSL certificate option. Like I said I really am beginner in all this...So I apologize if I said something stupid (great chances I did... :) Thank You for any reply...in advance
What about it I don’t want to expose my synology to the outside world? I have my nas as a domain controller and have the self certificate for the domain. I could assign it to my system default and export my certificates to my local computers. What about that?
How do you deal with the problem, that the LE Cert is valid for only a short amount of time and all Syno Apps ask you to re-log in, after it has been renewed?
Willie, I had previously set up one of my two Synology NAS boxes using a Let's Encrypt SSL certificate according to your instructions. It went quite well. At first, I couldn't get the "padlock" on all devices, but that eventually resolved. Now I setup an SSL (also from Let's Encrypt) on a second NAS box, but it appears that I cannot port forward both machines to port 80 on my Deco M5 mesh network. Is there an easy way for a novice to resolve this? Both boxes are on the same network and I have so far only been able to select one device or another. When I go to my first FQDN I can get to the DS login page, but on the second machine I end up at a Hello! Welcome to Synology Web Station. I do not have a webpage configured on that machine. Hopefully, what I'm saying makes sense. Thanks, Rob.
I need help getting the credentials for my google sub domain I just created. I’ve looked through your videos but you just have so many and I don’t know which one to look at
What are you doing to protect from outside threats? Do you use 2FA, different host names for different services, changing default ports? How do you monitor for unauthorized access? I would use a VPN but there is no way I will be able to get my girlfriend to use VPN... I'd have to use the simplest method but still keep as secure as possible.
I don't understand why you are doing DDNS for the Syno? Surely if your external address is static you just as an A record in DNS? Could you possibly clarify? Thanks
Fair enough! I assumed that you would have a static as a bear minimum! Although our speeds are rubbish over here, at least we generally get a fixed address.
I surely doubt you get a static IP. Do you have to set it yourself? If not, then its not static. But for most uses DHCP public IP is pretty static, i have had the same for years. Lease are 24h or longer, so no issues. Real static IP is impossible for me to get unless i get a business contract, wich i cant.
Here in the UK all the good ISP's provide a free static IP address. I've had one on my home connection for years as I work from home, IT support, and the static address is essential to help improve security for my remote connections.
Hello young man I love your channel and watch them often and I am curious to see if I were to buy this Synology through you if it would help you and if the price will be competitive I’m looking to purchase it within the next few weeks Ds1821+ $950
can you do a video that sows a straightforward approach to setup a synology NAS as a mapped network drive on my notebook that connects over the internet when I'm away from the office
would be simpler to use the Quick connect feature of Synology, or set up DDNS and use synology file or drive on your notebook Also you can set up your own VPN, look in the Package Center for that.
@@WillieHowe I wish that was the case. well, it works all the way to the letsecrypt certificate. even tho you can set a port forward for the synology for port80, the wizard fails to connect and get the certificate. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks for all these videos btw.
I love that you are doing Synology videos. Thanks for the great content.
BENTUNIT 👍
same here in 2020.
I've been trying to find a way for a long time to point my google domain to my Synology NAS DiskStation and was just about to throw in the towel till i came across your video tutorial this morning great video well explained keep up the good work
You helped me setup my synology some 2 years ago as I followed this video. Thank you so much!

Is there a way to do static host names in Unifi USG? I noticed you did this in the edgemax? Thanks again for your awesome videos

Very good. Could you do one on setting up and using the Synology Proxy Server please?
Thanks mate, really good video, I did everything, I even purchased proper certification. The only thing I missed was setting all the services to the ssl I purchased thanks again

This was SUPER helpful and eye opening. Also worked like a charm! Can't wait for our consult.
Now i got my green padlock after many time i try before, TQ so much.

Awesome video Willie.....thx again sir
My god that's a lot of work! Is this simply for security over quickconnect?
The port 80 forwarding is not necessary to auto renew LE cert. At least I don't do it, and it renews just fine by itself. I use Synologys DDNS though, so that's probably the reason.
Great video Willie! as a huge fan of Synology, love these vids.

It all worked ! Thank you for this excellent video.
What if you do not have an edgemax router? Synology has a way to install a certificate on their box. If there is a router and a modem behind that, should it still be installed on the Synology?
Question: Should there be a last step to point the Synology network card to the internal DNS server?
Thank you very much. This video is very helpful.
Thank you for your detailed explanation.
You have a nice voice.
English is difficult for me, but...^^;
Since the ER has static DNS host names option, what is the point of using Synology's DNS server?
I was wondering this as well.
Quick question. Where would I add the static hostnames on a Ubiquiti USG running on the latest version 4.4.22
Great job you should add a video to install pihole on the server
I wonder how many people attempted to lookup the ip of that host even though it was likely deleted before the video published.
Hehehe I looked it up just to see if he really made the mistake of not deleting it first
Lol

Can you please do a reverse proxy setup, I would like to serve up GLPI and Moodle to the internet, via Synology's reverse proxy.
Can I open the dyn dny through the ds file app on the phone?
Nice video!

But what if you have more than 1 Diskstation, does auto renewal of the certificate works then?
I am having some trouble to get the green lock when I hit the address to get to my synology. Any help will be nice.
Is it possible to add VPN to that and be able to access the NAS from outside my network?

Dude, you are the man!
How do I display the edge. I don't know.
Whats the big blue thing on your desk in the back?
hahah dude I just watched your video on VPN and Synology and you had a beard there :)
I don't understand why you are doing DDNS for the Syno? Surely if your external address is static you just as an A record in DNS? Could you possibly clarify? Thanks

Same here... Static IP comes free and standard from my ISP. Been unchanged for four years, now.
It must be a European thing.
My router doesn't do DNS Hostnames. It does support adding external DDNS service providers. Can you recommend one service over another?
I understand that your NAS is 25, what is on subnet 25? Is that your router.
I am new and ignorant to all this, so what is the purpose of those entire set he went through?
Quick Question: Should be the same logic for other routers as well?
same question.

Linux OS?
Video would have been so much better if you explained why you just did what you just did in layman’s terms rather than just use QuickConnect.
can you do a video that sows a straightforward approach to setup a synology NAS as a mapped network drive on my notebook that connects over the internet when I'm away from the office
would be simpler to use the Quick connect feature of Synology, or set up DDNS and use synology file or drive on your notebook Also you can set up your own VPN, look in the Package Center for that.
Does not work if you have a USG 🤨
@@WillieHowe where is the setting in the USG for this?

Better use openvpn with tls auth secure than using ddns.
Holy cow. That was fantastic. Couldn’t help but subscribe. Now if my brain could only work as fast as you were typing.....
Not very clear instruction for a newbie
I am not an IT person. so a lot of what is mentioned, is assumed that it is known. I know to some it makes total sense, but no to the every user.
