Best Humminbird Helix 7 tutorial video on UA-cam by far! A scope mode is my absolute favorite now because I've seen you use it and can't thank you enough for helping me find out how to get to it! LOL
I found an old unit (humminbird 540 sonar) at a garage sale last summer for 10$. I bought a Plano ammo crate, used some foam and wood I had in the garage and jerry rigged myself a little ice fishing sonar. It isn't the best and it isn't pretty but it works and it makes ice fishing a lot more enjoyable. Not only that but it helps me mark fish so I don't end up fishing in dead spot.
That's what I love about mine... super easy to interpret the information, minimal messing around and the ability to have graph mode with the bonus of GPS all in one package. 👌🎣🎣🎣
Seeing I was so good this year, Santa brought me a transducer, battery and pelican case for my H7 Chirp. Just set it to ice fishing mode tonight, can't wait. Started with the 5 series, 7 series, H5, and now the H7 for ice fishing. I'm assuming the cone width icon changes according to the depth and transducer power (cone size). It's nice to see a demonstration of useful settings that apply here. Saves a ton of time on the ice having a starting point. Thank you Clayton.
here rocking a Lowrance chirp and still watching this while cleaning my simcoe perch from yesterday. thanks for the uploads Clayton cheers to Cisco stu
I love how you say color is personal preference. As helix 7 owners, we both know that if you don't use pallet 7 you're a sociopath. Also great video. I typically run a graph next to a zoomed in graph on the bottom half of the column for lakers.
I ended up getting a Helix 5 earlier this week. I used your advice for the setting and I might never use a Vexilar again. I use to swear by Vexilar. I got some perch yesterday and the response of the device is instant. Keep up the great content!

Great video as always Clayton. Been running the helix's on my boat bought a 7 this year for ice fishing and never looked back awesome units. I can see now I definitely need the lithium battery.
Thanks for the tutorial. My helix 5 head unit goes between my boat and kayak and now on the ice. This being the first year using it with the ice ducer, I was a bit annoyed by the depth jumping around. Didn’t know about taking it off of auto. I already changed the setting and can’t wait to get back out on the ice to test it out. Thanks again!
Excellent video! Just recently bought one and love it. Can’t wait to use it in the summer to make my own depth maps. Maybe that’s something you could make a video of once the ice leaves? Thanks Clayton great video once again
Thanks for the tips! I got the Helix5 ICE this year and really like it. I use mine on the sonar mode most of the time I feel is gives me a better idea of how the fish are acting. I do find however, that even with the brightness turned down I only get 5 to 6 hours of battery life. I carry 2 extra batteries typically. Thanks for the lithium battery tip going to get one.
Those are the same things I adjust on my 7 too. And like you I have not pulled out the 55 this year either. The different screens and the gps make it so nice. I definitely need a Dakota battery though. Battery life is the only downside to that unit. Thanks for another great video!!
Always wanted to know what you were using for electronics. I'm sure you covered it before but I didn't see it. Very informative bud! I'd love to get one of those for sure
Hey Clayton, just wondering, what is your setup for your go pro on your helix? I have been trying to figure out what you are using but I can’t find it.
Hey Clayton, I’m going through some of your vids again. Love em all! Gets a person jacked up about ice season. Who is your supplier for the Dakota lithium. I have a Helix 7 and a marcum camera, plus a clam flipover with light bar. Hope to extend my hours on ice with better battery.

Hello Clay hopefully you see this and can help me out my felix 7 I have the range set to 0-20 but it says 393 ft wondering if you have any Idea to help me it would be greatly appreciated
Great video Clayton. Question how deep of water have you used this unit in so far? Was wondering if you have fished 100 ft of water for Lakers and how does the unit pick up your jig and fish? I know certain mid models of flashers have a hard time picking up stuff on bottom at these depths. Thanks!!
Hey Clayton, is yours the Helix 7 ice and you have the summer ducer as well? Or does your unit also have side image and down image ? I'm deciding which one to buy here and wondering if it's worth the extra $$ for side or down imaging.
Nicely done Clayton! It makes me wish I would have got the ice pack for my 7 in the fall but I had no idea of all those settings! Now I’ll be looking to add that to my ice fleet for next season 👊🏼🎣🎥
Just to be clear. When it comes to battery life, the only thing that determines how long it will last is the listed amp-hours. Not what material it's made of. Lithium just means that it is light and the battery will last 10 years vs 5 of the standard agm style.
Is there something you get running the flasher screen that you don’t get from the RTS window on the regular sonar view? Assuming they’re both on A-Scope.
I have the Helix 7 g2, just of out the box. Can this be used with the transducer for the boat in the di mode or does it have to be used with an ice ducer in ice fishing or flasher mode? Not sure if you know the answer but figured I would ask.
Hey Clayton. Do you use 2d switchfire mode on clear mode or max mode. I just purchased 1521 transducer for my helix 7 msi and can't use max mode at all, even on gain 1. With your settings the screen looks like old school TV snowflakes with antenna off. Do you think i got a faulty transducer? Summer transducer works great on max mode when ice fishing.
Clayton Schick Outdoors Ok Thank you for the response. Im also going to get a neoprene cover for the front of the unit for extra protection. Is there anything you didn’t like about the case? Its $320 canadian and i want to know if its worth that money. It comes with the ice transducer and the case.
Can I use the charger that comes with my helix 7 to charge the Dakota battery? Or do I need to buy lithium battery charger? I’m going to buy a Dakota battery today and just curious
Clayton Schick Outdoors went and got one yesterday. Now I’m just trying to figure out the helix 7 unit. First time owning a sonar for icefishing. Your video is helping out quite a bit. Thanks you
Hey Clayton, I’m new into this ice fishing game and I own the helix 7. Mostly used for open water fishing but just started ice fishing with it this year. I was wondering what I need to do. I don’t fish super deep water mainly 10-16ft. And I always have to have my gain all the way up in order to see my jig. What should I do because I feel I don’t need gain at 20 all the time.
hmmm... Ya, you shouldn't have to turn your gain up to 20... Try resetting default settings and then follow of few of the things I listed in this video. I will try to do more about the units in the future :)
I’m a ong time subscriber who’s watched every video a few times! Is this the summer helix 7 with si and di that is able to be converted to winter and still has the flasher screen? I’d love to buy this setup so let me know please!!
Thanks bud, gunna buy one tmrw!! Keep putting out the amazing content, only a matter of time before everyone realizes what a great fisherman you are! 👌
Do you have any experience with the Helix Ice Chirp GPS G3N? I bout one yesterday and there isn't an option to use CHIRP IR. The manual says there is but it doesnt even pop up in the menu.
@@ClaytonSchickOutdoors I did figure it out. I had to do a reset and go to "advanced user settings". Love the channel bud! Looking forward to more videos. Once you set it once they will stay like that. Even your depth will stay the same, so keep that in mind if you all of a sudden can't mark the bottom you will have to adjust the depth setting.
Can anyone answer my question?? I’m using my helix 7 for ice fishing and was fishing 6.3ft of water could mark all fish coming in/thru but never could see my lure with endless amounts of fiddling with settings. I was using a small tungsten jig and even had my gain all the way up too 20 still couldn’t see lure/bait. Thank you
check and see what your surface clutter setting is set at and adjust accordingly... the jig will show up. Or, turn of your chirp IR and see what that does. I have had my jig disappear before after jumping holes and different depths...you'll find it.
I have read you can but lithium can’t take a trickle charge. So as soon as it’s charged shut it off ? They also say use a lithium charger likely to save their butts?? Appreciate what your able to dig jp
Frickin rights!!! A-Scope I’ve been wondering what that setting was! Do you ever run out of juice in your marcum shuttle? If so do you have another battery or a way to power your unit?
Clayton Schick Outdoors I’ve never run out either but I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about thing Dakota lithium. I’ll have to check them out sound like the real deal!
I have the same unit as you and when I hit menu my chirp IR thing doesn’t pop up like it does on yours does anyone know why that is I think I have it turned on in my settings and it still doesn’t give me those 6 chirp settings when I hit menu
Have you had any issues with it? I’ve been having a issue with it running at ultra speed then freezing then jumping back to ultra speed. It’s super annoying. And then seems to put itself into a sim mode randomly.
Why not bring your Ice 55 out for your dead stick hole? That's what I plan on doing when I get my Helix 7. Use my Ice 45 on my dead stick hole so I can look over and see if a fish is lingering or approaching.

I have the same unit as you and when I hit menu my chirp IR thing doesn’t pop up like it does on yours does anyone know why that is I think I have it turned on in my settings and it still doesn’t give me those 6 chirp settings when I hit menu
Have you done the update?
Have you had any issues with it? I’ve been having a issue with it running at ultra speed then freezing then jumping back to ultra speed. It’s super annoying. And then seems to put itself into a sim mode randomly.
No, mine has been really good...
Clayton Schick Outdoors hmmm. Well contacting humminbird hopefully they can help figure it out.
@@derekbreezer2050 I have noticed mine do this as well from time to time. Anything from Humminbird on the issue?
Awesome, I realy want to get a Helix 7
Very nice buck!!!!!!
Thanks dude :)
Why not bring your Ice 55 out for your dead stick hole? That's what I plan on doing when I get my Helix 7. Use my Ice 45 on my dead stick hole so I can look over and see if a fish is lingering or approaching.
Van020280 that’s a great idea!! Thank you.
Great video. Why is ur helix battery always so low?
I run a lithium power pack and it just always shows it way lower then it actually is.
Clayton Schick Outdoors makes sense. Love your videos. Especially the endless fun with the dinner plate ciscos
Are you able leave waypoints on map so you know where spots are gps
Yes you can! :)
@@ClaytonSchickOutdoors how did you get it to read a lake master chip does it have to be specially formatted
@@Raydubbs90 It should read once you put it into the unit? I am not 100% on that one, sorry...
Thanks clayton!
Have you updated it yet??
I did the updates yes, probably another thing I could have included in the video.
@@ClaytonSchickOutdoors I've herd the latest update Is kinda weird! I was warned to not even update the unit due to some bugs. What have you herd?
I have not heard that. I guess if there has been an update in the past few months I have not done it either then.
i think they came out with a new one a couple days ago! check it out!@@ClaytonSchickOutdoors
@@ClaytonSchickOutdoors like i said, haven't' herd to many good things about it yet
Couldn't take my eyes off that buck...the one hanging on the wall was nice too...lol
This is great, but I want more...... more....... more....... more....... Hahahahahaha
More coming this year :) Ice is soon!
Eye Spy a wig in the background!?
HAH! Bubba Rae :)
Your scale is off ... 2.5 pounds all day 😎 Thanks for the shout out #DakotaLithium #PowerYourPassion
I should have tried more than 1 scale. Its soooo light :)
@@ClaytonSchickOutdoors not sure if we can believe you on the big fish you catch now. Jk thanks for the video.
Didn’t get the notification this video was uploaded, but I’m here 10 hours late ready to learn.
Seems like a lot of my notifications do not go through to people.
Those deer belong inside the house. Not banished to the garage!
