- The Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake is an estate car that thinks it's a coupe, but is actually not very good at being either. Chris Knapman explains why.

It may not have the widest boot opening but the 495 litres of boot space is on a par with its bigger brother, the C-Class estate with 490 litres. There is also more legroom and headroom for rear passengers than in a C-Class saloon. So, practicality is actually decent for such a small estate car.
"I'm five foot eleven and the seating position is set for me" (-_-) he proceeds to drive for the rest of the review with the steering wheel extended telescopically all the way out and the seat as far back as it will go, or sometimes with the seat all the way forward and his arms at acute angles, does Chris have any idea what he is talking about? No wonder you had no leg room you must drive with your legs completely straight, floating in the air or squashed up under your chin? (I'll have to guess at that though because for all of the in car talking segments you're using the cruise control with your feet completely flat on the carpet).
I don't know of any estate with a boot thats conveniently shallow to the point you can load it without the dirty bumper touching your leg its kind of the point that they're cavernously deep. The CLS shooting break is so deep you have to climb in to reach an umbrella at the back, saying that I've loved driving it whenever I've borrowed my mates car for a couple of days.
One wacky colour combo doesn't make even the standard 17 options equally as bad to your taste.
The 220 7G is the same as the one in the CLS, what are you talking about when you say "the underwhelming combination" in comparison to the CLS? Yes there is also the 350 9G Tronic but the smaller diesel is identical.
This review is being carried out by someone who either couldn't be bothered to make proper comparisons or who was on such a short time frame that he couldn't make informed comments.
i'm yet to see a single positive review of a merc from telegraph cars (not that i've watched them all), but it is the usual flavour when it comes to mercs, they just dont like them it seems. Fair enough, but also biased potentially.
His whole seating position was completely wrong, almost sat like a gangsta, what a numpty.
This is a car I am looking at to replace my ageing C250. Believe me it looks look so much better in white. I like the orange art and having 4 wheel drive is a bonus where I live. It's a throwback to sports cars of the 80s. I didn't think it was as bad as the reviewer here says it is. The extra weight over the back smoothes the ride ofer eh A class and even CLA saloon. The spec I was looking at was around £40k, which is on a par with a Disco Sport. I don't think it is bad taste at all. I actually think it is stylish and individual.
Mercedes-Benz makes a huge range of different cars. CLA is suppose to be a 4-door coupe. It's like saying SL is lacking space. You don't buy a coupe as a family car. It's not like they removed a coupe and a estate from manufacturing to build this. You can still buy a bigger mercedes or a smaller one. If you want something in the middle then here you go. Porsche and Lamborghini started making SUV for the same reason. To give a people ability to choose.
This is a really stupid review in my opinion.
Is it me or is everyone missing the point ?. The reviewer is making boot space storage comparisons as if the CLA is fighting the same arena as the C class or BMW 3 series and its simply not. The car is based on an A class for gods sake so there are bound to be issues getting in and out of a boot. 495litres is massive when you look at the Audi Q5's and BMW X3's are putting out just 5 liters more.. The reviewer has missed the whole point by a country mile. Everyone reading this will know beauty is in the eye etc. Yes its pricey but who buys cars cash these days. I have a 22 year old lass at my place driving a brand new scirroco costing her 450 per month, another colleague pays 450 for her A class and another pays 495 for her Audi Q7 cos her hubby's a manager at a carpet place.. No one on here has put things into context.. as Kevin Costner once said.. If you build it, they will come. Sack that reviewer telegraph, there's a place in Jim Henson's muppet show that he will fit right in.

i am 6'4, and i can get in the back okey, but only in the shoting brake i have head room
My dad tested a CLA Shooting Brake before buying a BMW 3-Series Touring. The CLA is a beautiful car to look at, with nice built quality and good driving dynamics.
The BMW got our pick though, thanks to bigger boot (especially wider access) and interior, better built quality and excellent driving dynamics. The steering for example is incredible. The Merc just felt boring when driving back to back with the 3-Series.
The CLA isn't a bad car though, as this car said; and the styling really is striking. If you can get past the lack of family friendly practicality, it's a very nice car!

Everything I have heard (tbf about the CLA250) is that dynamically its quite a fun and engaging car to drive with decent steering feel. Wonder if our mate here (who seems not to be able to set the steering wheel at the right height) also forgot to put the car into Sport+ mode?

I've been saying this lots of time. This guy's driving position is too far aback even for a man his size. It doesn't do justice for the 2nd row seat.
Like Evan Telfer said you missed the point of this car except for the younger buyers. This was more of a styling ''pilot/experiment/statement'' than utilitarian boring wagon box.
But anyway in your point of view a honest review and i'll give it a like.

Awful design ?? I think it is best looking compact tourer. But that is not the main reason to buy a car. Apparently it needs some improvement. Probably as this review shows need a bit more the rear leg room, and more feedback from steering.

I really like the outside looks cls sb, but it's so expensive. So this cla sb is like the perfect solution. I also think that the cla250 sport is just perfect, not too expensive, but still sporty like the 45 amg.

I’ve got this exact car and the space is fine in the back, the engine is perfect as is the steering, you just don’t like it and don’t have a good thing to say because you can’t afford one either same as the kids you talk about, pathetic and boring man

first things first before you slate this car get yourself a proper fitting jacket!! there's plenty of room in this car for its size lets not forget its not as if its a BMW 7 series or something like that lol..

Great points when comparing to the S shooting brake. The CLA shooting brake is too compromised due to the rake of the rear

Loose the orange for a light grey or blue and it’ll work
I tested this car a couple of month ago, I think it is quite good looking from some angles (not all!) but it is way too small and expensive. I ordered a BMW 420d Gran Coupe (M Sport) instead - and I'm very happy with the BMW!

Only have one problem with the cosmetic deisgn. Needs more Orange. Personaly i would for a thick symetrical White & Orange stripe down the middle of the whole car. Just go all out not half assed.

Chris is getting better and better with his reviews, I have to say! CLA is a terrible car for the money, so his criticism is well-deserved.
The CLA 45 has 380 bhp.

CLA SB is expensive for what it offers and also needs the amg pack to look really good. The C class is so much better.

What a stupid review do you get paid by BMW to knock there competition? No room in the back you had the drivers seat all the way back this was confirmed when you got in the drivers seat. Also why was you nearly on the over side of the road when you took that bend great driving. All in all a pointless review by some one that thinks there are funny but fails dramatically ..........now that is a review!

barozanul2 if you think this looks ugly that ok, it's matter of preference. But everyone would agree fabia is a really awkward looking car.
The new Mercedes designs are so fugly from the front. I would not spend a single Euro on any of them.

The design of this vehicle makes absolutely no sense...trying hard to excel at being a mix of compact 4-door saloon, coupe and estate. Unnecessary vehicle in my humble opinion.

Awful looking car, sack the designer, Jaguar Ford and GM with Mazda can style a car, seems since the Germans stopped making boxy square cars, all went wrong!
