My memory of Roger was from 1978 in the area of Plano/Richardson,Tx while painting a house we took lunch and started to throw around an old football "we were Young and had all kinds of energy!" Anyway all the residents were at work we had the street to ourselves . After a few throws a man checking his mail picked up an errant football and proceeded to play catch with us ! He had us spread out down the street to the run and he would pass the ball to us He spent at least 20 mins with us ,shook our hands and asked how long was our lunch break lol We finished up the paint job that day and went to Garland,tx for another job. Thank's Roger Staubach you sure made my day and gave me a memory to always Treasure and RESPECT 👍😃☺️🤗
I may be a steelers fan from Pittsburgh but I have always had respect for mr staubach and coach laundry. If my kids grow up to be half of the man they our I would be proud
What a classy comment. Jack Lambert said Staubach was a player the Steelers respected; he would take hits, not say a word, get up and line up for the next play. Staubach took a beating in SBX. That year Dallas was in rebuilding mode. They lost some key players in '73-'74 but restocked with 12 rookies in '75. Still, Dallas lacked a breakaway RB in '75. Dallas, especially in the 2nd half, could not run the ball on the Steelers' front seven in SBX. Honestly, the fact the Cowboys were in the game was largely due to Staubach. The Cowboys D played well, other than Swann's great catches. Bradshaw entered SBX with better WRs, a better O-line, a better backfield, a better defensive front four and a better set of LBs, and Pittsburgh beat a wildcard team by only four points. Without Staubach the Steelers would have probably won by 10-14 points. I've said, Joe Montana and Tom Brady never had to face the '75 or '78 Steelers defense in their SBs. I think the '89 49ers would have beat any Pittsburgh team, but the other SB teams Montana led would not have beaten the 70s Steelers. Staubach might be remembered as the greatest QB of all time had Dallas won either SBX or SBXIII. As it is, I still would argue that he is among the best five or six QBs ever. Montana is no. 1. I have no argument with that.
In my opinion he was the best all around QB to ever play the game. He had a rifle arm, incredible scrambling ability, often called his own plays, the epitome of a leader, great running ability, supreme instincts. He might not be the best statistically, but I would take Staubach in his prime over anyone else. And yes, he was class personified on and off the field.
I will agree but also say that if Randall Cunningham on the Vikings that was serious had been that way his whole career we might be looking at Randall like that unfortunately we'll never know
As a young kid growing up in San Antonio TX in the late 1970's, I just idolized him. He was everything I wanted to be as an athlete. I really grew up in the 80's after Staubach had retired but I remember the period from 1976-1979, being very young & Roger was inspirational. Courage, class, integrity, guts, charisma ...... never quit attitude ...... I bled metallic blue & silver as a kid & lived & died with every Dallas victory or loss. I'm a 48 yr old man who thought Troy Aikman was just AWESOME & on the sheer ability of arm strength & accuracy, Aikman has the edge but when you add mobility, leadership & all the intangibles, I give Staubach the edge with 23 come from behind victories, 14 of those in the final 2 minutes of the game or in OT. Were it not for the Steel Curtain defense in two SB defeats in the 70's (& a Jackie Smith dropped TD pass), Roger would have four SB rings ...... regardless, when you hear former competitors like Jack Lambert, Terry Bradshaw, Jack Youngblood, Jim Marshall & others talk about him, you KNOW there is nothing but the utmost respect for one of the all-time greats !!!!! #12 is still my hero .....
Jackie Smith should have caught that pass. It was in his hands. He may have been a long time Cardinal, but it was his last game and only chance to win a Super Bowl ring. To this day I just can’t comprehend how that didn’t happen.
I stll remember the hail Mary pass like it was yesterday I was only 15 years old I couldn't believe it tears were coming down my face nothing but joy to have seen this.
Truly a man with ethics and the drive to be the best....I quit watching pro football when he retired. Hated the Steelers, but what a pair of teams. Bradshaw was equally full of ethics and true talent.
Being from the SF Bay Area, Roger dealt us a few blows in his football career but I have always considered Roger Staubach as the best QB until our Joe Montana came along.
Wow just wow I wish I got to see Captain America play, must of been an awesome site. I'm 22 and seen Aikman play and I love Romo now but man Staubach was a bad ass motherfukker !!!! 😎😎👊👊👊
I remember watching Cowboys games as a kid growing up in the seventies and I always thought no matter the score Roger would pull out the win somehow and I also remember the first time he didn't was in the Pittsburgh SB in 78 and I was literally stunned although he threw a pass that bounced off the wide open Jackie Smith in the back of the endzone that I will never forget. So really he did but his teammate let him down but god bless the HOFer Jackie Smith though never the less.
HERO!!!! Go Cowboys. There was a man who was laid off from his job and could not by presents for his son, his family were big Cowboys fans from Pennsylvania. Roger stepped in and let's just say, that kid and family had the best Christmas they could possibly have and Roger made it possible. That is also NOT the only time Roger ever did that sort of thing.
There have been many good quarterbacks, and several great quarterbacks. Roger Staubach - "Captain America" and "Mr.#12" obviously is in that "great" catagory. His precision passing arm, his scrambling ability, his running ability, his sharp mind, and his leadership quality IMO puts Roger Staubach at NUMBER ONE on my list of the greatest quarterback in NFL history.🏈
A great good athlete who grew up where I did went to the same grade school. I was lucky to be a friend of Tony Knight who was his cousin and a great smart guy who taught me how to play chess. My niece who was a great athlete at St. Johns won the Roger Staubach award which he promoted made me proud and appreciative of his giving back to his roots. A great leader and mentor who I will always remember as Roger the Dodger who knew when he had to scramble.
If anyone remembers who Pat Tillman is, I can still remember how I thought he was going to be the next Roger Staubach like "Captain America" for the NFL once he was done with his 2nd service over in the Middle East before the whole disaster of his death and then the government lying about how he died then. He was a great leader of men, he was totally unselfish, hard working, and a good football player.
I loved Staubach and the Cowboys: my favorite quarterback of all time, my favorite running back of all time, my favorite wide receiver of all time, favorite defensive backs, all led by the cool man in the iconic hat. Sad that his last game was that stupid loss to the Rams at Texas Stadium.
Every Wednesday former teammates Too Tall Jones,Jethro Pugh, Dorsett , Newhouse & Staubach others eat lunch Ms Lucy Resturant in South Dallas. Salute great memories
+Paul Fischer if Wilson played back then you would be saying the opposite. People always like the original and old school of everything not hating but if you think about it it's true
Actually no I wouldn't. Staubach played with less talent on both sides of the field. Not to mention he was what 28 when finally became a starter. I don't disagree with people favoring the original or old school but in this case I believe you're comparing complete opposites. Not saying Wilson is a bad guy either (he's not) but Staubach is American hero.
Paul Fischer How are you stating that he played with and against less talent? Did you play in those days? Size doesn't make you better or more sophisticated. Him being 28 doesn't mean anything. The man was an exceptional QB with a coach who ran one of the more sophisticated offenses of its day, so much that teams still mimic them on both sides of the ball.
So, there's a sound clip from one of those old NFL films with John Facenda narrating where he calls him, "Roger the Dodger Staubach,....Captain America! ....Captain Comeback!!"....I know it exists just can't find it anywhere. Anyone have it? Would love to get and record.
As an Eagles fan growing up, I hated the Cowboys, but I respected Staubach. Danny White? Please. Staubach was the leader who helped the Cowboys win 2 Super Bowl rings. I don't think it's coincidence that the Cowboys lost 3 NFC Championship games in a row in the early 1980s with Danny White.
+Ron Nasty Explain how you could possibly blame the three NFCC losses all on Danny White? Danny wasn't playing defense when Wilbert Montgomery was running all over the field, he wasn't covering Dwight Clark's "The Catch" and it wasn't his fault the O Line got him killed in Washington and knocked out with a concussion. It's a TEAM sport.
+thegorn68 Sport on! The Dallas Defense was the reason they didn't make the Super Bowl from 1980-83. The unit wasn't nearly as good during White's tenure as it was in 1977-78. Not even close.
Roger set a standard in Dallas. The standard is so high, Troy Aikman won 3 Super Bowls in 4 years can NEVER surplant Roger as the Cowboys QB. What was there not to like or respect about Roger Staubach. I think I can speak to all the great NF'L fans when I say, we may have hated Dallas, but there was just something about no.12. we liked. I think it was how the Cowboys themselves felt about Staubauch, the overall rrspect shown and opponents too. It happens today. The gun goes off, and a lot of the opposing team is looking for that guy everyone looks up to. Staubach was one of those guys.
When Everybody Talks About The Quarterbacks Of The Dallas Cowboys, They Always Mention Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman And Tony Romo, They Do Not Mention Danny White, I Think Danny White Deserves Get Some Recognize And The Cowboys Should Put Him In The Ring Of Honors.
Never before, never again! A man every father wants their daughter to marry. A man of honor and principles. Never see his like in football again. Could have been president in a landslide, smart enough to do it his way. Too worthy for politics.

A sold out Rose tBowl, grass in great condition, weather partly cloudy skis, kick off temperature 58F. 54,000 cowboy fans, 54,000 49er fans. Jerry Jones to flip the coin. I am a big Jerry Jones fan. He wants to beat the 49ers in the NFC Championship game again. I rest my case.
Ryan Cam it makes no sense if he's the michael vick of the 1900s since he played in the late 60 early 70s... she michael vick came only 40 years after. Saying he was the michael vick of the 1900s sounds stupid. So shut your mouth you pathetic man.
My memory of Roger was that he wasn''t has great has people make him out to be. The real mistake the cowboy's made was keeping roger and they let greg morton go. that was the biggest mistake.

That's a hell of a memory to have right there.
"hank's Roger Staubach" Should be thanks, not thank's. Also, who was the man "would pass the ball" to you????
My hero growing up. Still my hero at age 53. The man is pure class.

I CRIED when Cooper dropped that pass. I also remember seeing ANGER in Roger’s face and eyes for the first and last time.
Jackie Smith should have caught that pass. It was in his hands. He may have been a long time Cardinal, but it was his last game and only chance to win a Super Bowl ring. To this day I just can’t comprehend how that didn’t happen.

One of my few heroes, and a true American hero.
pat Tillman?
+eric garcia I'm older than Pat Tilman, so no, he wasn't one of my heroes growing up... but he definitely was a hero as well.

It was a great rivalry, but somehow the Steelers also came out on top. Great athletes and teams.

Lifelong Skins fan here...I don't ever remember Staubach having a truly bad game....even when Dallas got beat, Roger still played great.
Im an Eagles fan and I agree. Roger the Dodger was Great.
Being from the SF Bay Area, Roger dealt us a few blows in his football career but I have always considered Roger Staubach as the best QB until our Joe Montana came along.
Right , he didnt make alot of mistakes
Some say the greatest 2 minute qb ever
why
this guy is the reason why I love them cowboys my childhood here
Wow just wow I wish I got to see Captain America play, must of been an awesome site.
I'm 22 and seen Aikman play and I love Romo now but man Staubach was a bad ass motherfukker !!!! 😎😎👊👊👊
Please don't use such foul language to describe a devotedly religious man.
Roger was then, is now and forever will be my favorite player. I was 10 years old when he retired. I still get choked up thinking about it...
Always enjoy my trip to Dallas. Enjoy watching the cowboys!

I am watching this again because for a field a trip we went to the naval academy in Annapolis and saw his plaque
As an Eagle fan. He was awesome. Winner.
Can only imagine what Staubach would have accomplished in the NFL had he not spent four years in the Navy prior to the NFL.
Russell Wilson's game (scrambling and playmaking) looks a little similar to this legend.
But there's only 1 Roger Staubach
xue zhong wen I see what you are saying. If Russell's passing game catches up with this scrambling indeed. Right now he is like Fran Tarkenton
