Worf: "Yes...somewhat" Data: "I am sorry" Worf: "Do not be. Your animal is...a formidable warrior." (you gotta imagine it in Michael Dorn and Brent Spiner's voices)
Fortunately if you want to see Worf get wrecked by something that shouldn't have conceivably been a match for him you can just watch literally any other episode of TNG
My mind filled in the visuals of this dialogue and it was an awesome scene. This dialogue should be inserted into the series retro actively. We have technology to do so. We should use it for good.
And after Worf sees Spot scratch Barclay into pieces for the first time: *Worf snatches Spot out of Data's grasp* Data: Excuse me, Lieutenant. Why have you just deprived me of my feline? Worf *Glares*: Spot is a warrior. Warriors are owned by no man. He will live freely with me in my quarters like a true warrior. Data *Bewildered*: Bu... But.... Spot is my companion and my friend. Worf *Glares in disgust*: You have no friends...cat owner.
@@sarahp936 That is an interesting theory, throughout the series you would see glimpses of emotions by Data like when he would be proud of something he will smile, it would be great because the process is natural that way, and like you said the dreaming is an example of an "achievement unlocked" so it is possible that the emotion unlocked exists too.
These are the funny moments I love in TNG, including the time Geordie got electrocuted, Picard flipping out and panicking after drawing that smiley face, finding himself in bed with Q, and Kid Picard throwing a tantrum with the Ferengi guard.

And this is another reason why I believe Data had emotions all along. His genuine concern for his pet: is that not emotion? How about how he dedicated his time to raising Lal or his friendship with Geordi? He even mentioned that he is fond of Troi and Riker: are those not emotions?
Or he had a very good program to maximize spots happiness and was just telling Worf what the instructions were. He may have some primitive form of emotions, but not real ones like humans have and that is what he always is after.
As Data says, his programs become used to stimuli and are aware of the absence of that stimuli. Creating a sense of something missing. So it's not really emotions as we classically think of them, but would be a form of longing, but much more abstract compared to ours.
How is that not emotion, though? Emotions are chemical reactions released by our brains, how is that different from a program telling a machine what to do. I think that’s the beauty of data. His “emotions” are just as real as ours, just entirely different routes of getting there, and a much less outwardly expressive form of it as well
@@Xandian it's what comes from those feelings that make them emotions as we understand them. What we see from Data is much more abstract and vague than emotions as humans understand them. He doesn't get angry, sad, joyful, excited, ect. The most emotional thing he has described himself feeling (before modifications) was how he gets used to stimuli and his programs adapts to expect that stimuli, and what it's gone he feels aware of it. But he doesn't describe it like grief, or sadness, or anything like that. It's much more vague. We could say what data feels is like proto-human emotions. Like only their most abstracted forms.
I don't think ascribing human emotions to Data is good though. He is fundamentally different in how he processes the world and experiences, so claiming he has emotions cuz he does X feels like taking away his agency in understanding his own self perception. Basically if Data doesn't think he feels, then he doesn't.
This is a response to an old comment, but just for the edification of anyone who happens by: domesticated cats can and often do get all of the water that their bodies require from the blood and other bodily fluids of the animals they kill. If you feed a cat only wet meat with an appropriate gravy/water content, it won't need a water dish. A cat will only thirst when it is getting very dry food (kibble) or when it has not been fed sufficiently.
To say that showing compassing and emotion and love is a human thing is very un Star Trek like. It’s egotistical it could just be a sentient being kind of thing
I love how we can see the precise nanosecond that it occurs to Data he's laying it on too thickly. His processor hit that exact byte of social cue recognition.

The best decision, the very best move from anyone working on TNG in the entire series, is the absolutely perfect timing in the cut out of Worf sneezing and Spot screaming
HOPEFUL FAN Scene Visualization for Picard S3: we get a GORGEOUS shot of the Enterprise E and it cuts to Picard, Troi, and Riker receiving a hail from the Enterprise and it agains cuts to Worf leaning back in his chair saying how long it has been. Obvious dialogue asking how each have been would ensue. When riker notices a cat in Worf’s lap. Then in Riker fashion decides to jokingly inquire as to why there’s a cat on a Federation starships bridge, when Worf cuts him off and says “this… is Spot” a look of confusion mixed with happiness and sadness as Troi breaks the silence and says “I’m sure Data would’ve wanted that” to which the camera then pans to Spot wearing his own Baldric with a crest unlike worfs. While the camera is still on spot worf gently grabs the crest which would look like Data’s emotion chip from Generations and says “I didn’t feel the house of Martok would be suitable enough for him. So I took it upon myself to grant him permanent place in the Empire as a member of “The House of Data”. The camera cuts back to an obvious emotional Picard, Troi, and Riker to which off screen still focused the others we hear from worf “he’s as a formidable warrior as was his father… and a great friend” END SCENE** corny? Yes. Would I cry my eyes out if I saw it? YOURE GODAMN RIGHT
I realize federation medicine is pretty swell, but that cat would be over 32 years old.. well maybe only 25 or so, if this is just ... the most *recent* Spot.
Excellent performances by all three actors. Spot, "Of all personnel on this ship, you turned me over to a Klingon?! They think cats are just one cut above Tribbles!"
I oftentimes look at what could be a "behind the walls" moment, where Alexander notices his father (Worf) brings a cat home and Worf asks him to look after it, because Alexander seemingly loves animals. Also, notice how they refer to Spot as "him" when Spot is actually a female. Male cats don't give birth.
@Alicia, spot was a girl but they didn't know that until later when she was pregnant. As for Data caring about the cat, he's attempting to be like a human.
@@julscatten9458 According to Spiner they would have to do many, many takes hoping Spot would do what was written in the script. I remember him once saying something like, "Whenever I looked at the script and saw Spot's name, I knew it was going to be a very long day."
It really shows how cats manage to show up and change everything about your life without you even knowing it. In seconds Warf is changing his life to feed Spot, give him water, clean up his poop and put up with allergies. He thinks it's to help out his friend, but it's Spot who will make him take the knee and serve him.
"And you must talk to him...tell him he is a pretty cat...and a good cat." 😂😂😂 "I will feed him" (to a targ, if I can find one quickly enough) I wonder how those two ever got through this hilarious scene!
So I went to Star Trek themed Winter Camp for BSA, as did my mom and brother. This left my dad all alone with my gerbils. I was telling him how to take care of them, and he said, "I will feed them."
After Data's death in Nemesis. Worf becomes First Officer on the Enterprise and ends up taking care of Data's cat. The Destiny Novels and Resistance books.

Also, notice how they refer to Spot as "him" when Spot is actually a female. Male cats don't give birth.

Actually Spot had three cats as actors throughout the show, all were just as annoying to work with as the next, according to Brent Spiner.

According to Spiner they would have to do many, many takes hoping Spot would do what was written in the script. I remember him once saying something like, "Whenever I looked at the script and saw Spot's name, I knew it was going to be a very long day."
It really shows how cats manage to show up and change everything about your life without you even knowing it. In seconds Warf is changing his life to feed Spot, give him water, clean up his poop and put up with allergies. He thinks it's to help out his friend, but it's Spot who will make him take the knee and serve him.
