  • Self-cleaning oven- how does it work? Self- cleaning ovens have been around since 1963, when General Electric released them on the market. But lots of people still use oven-cleaning spray over the self-cleaning oven.
    Want to know the easiest way to clean an oven? The House Cleaning Guru, Angela Brown, shares tips for using a self-cleaning oven. Proven advice like proper ventilation, oven door locks, avoiding fumes, and elbow grease.
    We also look at self-cleaning oven pros and cons. Do you know about the steam cleaning oven? Oven spray and non-toxic oven cleaning methods, including the silicone oven liner?
    Be a savvy cleaner and keep your oven floor clean without burning out your heating element.

    Just wanted to let you know that many higher end oven manufacturers are now recommending you DO NOT line an oven. My husband ruined a 2-year old convection oven putting a liner in, we forgot that it said don't line it in the manual, we had to purchase a new one. It was an expensive lesson to remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions. My current oven also states you should never line the oven.
    I love your videos and have been watching a bunch of them! Thanks for producing them!

    It seems to me the Fire Department or someone could have just turned off the oven from the circuit breaker instead of tearing down a wall.

    • @volleyballjerry
      @volleyballjerry 6 років тому +16

      Unless you knew exactly where the panel was and which circuit breaker to open - remember when your house is on fire your first job is to get you and everyone else the hell out of there. Firefighters are trained to attack the fire and not always will they know where to look for the circuit breaker panel. When this happened to me when my oven caught fire, I *did* know where to go and pulled the main breaker to the entire house killing all power and then hitting the fire with the extinguisher. Quick thinking but since I designed the house and was the original occupant, I happened to know exactly where to go. Not everyone will.

      So why not just shut the utility mains off at the meter head outside of the house rather than bashing a whole wall down?

    • @kerageous1502
      @kerageous1502 5 років тому +2

      Sure but a fire is not only fueled by the electric once it started. Seen it. My oven stands alone , at least 6 inches from other items even when baking something at 450. Doesn’t look bad-in fact gives a sense of security.

    Thank you for this. Most of the information I already knew. But your anecdotal stories and details helped me learn even more. A friend of mine “cleaned” my oven once using cleaning agents and I was still thinking about trying the self-cleaning function. How bad could it be? Well, after watching this video I absolutely will not do that. I’m going to use your baking soda and vinegar solution, which I had heard of before, and work on it. Since it’s your recommendation, I trust it much more now. You really are an expert and a professional.

    This is an outstanding instruction video, Angela! I absolutely will try the baking soda and vinegar option especially in the winter since opening the windows to clear the air doesn't work well when it is -15ºF outside. And, yes everyone, if there is major spillage inside the oven it helps to manually clean up as much as you can before running the cleaning cycle to minimize the volume of smoke and ash generated.

    After years of neglect, I finally decided today to clean my oven using the baking soda / vinegar approach. It certainly helped, but I'm still having to put a fair amount of elbow grease into it to get the remaining gunk off. I'm thinking when this is finally done, I'm going to be much more diligent about cleaning the oven, if not after every use, then at least much more frequently than once every 20 years!

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  2 роки тому +3

      Cleaning mainteance is key. If we let the gunk build up we will definitely put in more work/time when we decide to clean. Thanks for watching!

    Wow, what an oven boss. Thank you so much. Been renting a home for so long, tried to use oven after about 1.5 years into rent agreement and so many fumes. Noticed Oven had to be cleaned. Tried with basic cleaners (non-oven cleaners) and then noticed Oven had self-clean feature. Luckily I have very high flow fans so I ran them to blow outside while oven self cleaned. Results are still pending. What concerned me was the final note from video that it may overwhelm oven ie. 4 hours at 1000 degrees. So much for trying to make some bread! :)

      There are some cases where the self-cleaning feature has worked wonderfully for some people. And if it works correctly it's fabulous. We do however recommend our cleaning customers buy those eco-friendly, reusable oven liners for $11-$13 amzn.to/2VrjrWz and just keep one in the bottom of each oven. You can cook anything you want, pie, yams anything that boils and bubbles over and it drips on the oven liner not the oven itself. When the oven is cool you slide out the liner and shake out the debris in the trash and wipe down the inside of the oven ceiling and walls with a damp sponge with a pinch of dish soap, and your oven is as good as new. Wipe off the oven liner and replace in the bottom of the oven. You'll never have to use the self-cleaning feature or harsh chemicals again. BAM!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Ive only ever done the chemical spray or the baking soda thing at home and other cleaning jobs and both worked fine. One of my newer accounts asked me to fo the self cleaning on their oven, thet have a half used chemical cleaner that must have been used by previous cleaner and i did not feel comfortable with the self cleaning feature ( a friend of mine had to call the fire department for a self cleaning oven problem). Im glad I went with my instincts and used baking soda instead!

      Fumes can be really bad if you're using a self-cleaning cycle and you had previously used an aerosol spray. Ventilation is the key. (NOTE - I would not recommending running a self-cleaning cycle if you are not going to be nearby to monitor the situation, just in case something like a cabinet fire happens.)

    Well, you just may have saved our house. We thought about using the self-cleaning option, but decided to hold off. Now we are remodeling our kitchen and I decided to pull the oven out, only to find out the electric oven wire was undersized. It should have been #10 AWG on a 30amp breaker, but when I opened it, it was installed with #16 AWG, ( which is smaller. the smaller the number AWG the bigger the size of wire) from the wall to the through the flex conduit to the unit. And the unit back was almost tight against the wall and sides. We'll use a safer way of cleaning. We both Thank you!

    Must be honest, this was the last video I decided to watch, since the bright colors on the back looked like a sensationalist video. Nevertheless, you answered ALL the questions we had, we decided not to use it at all. Although, I think the manufacturer explored all your scenarios, still we were not so sure. Our house was built in the 50s and I was doubtful about the power box being able to support the energy needed. The enclosure of the cupboards, the possibility of a fire, etc. On one of the videos I watched, the lady did everything you suggested not to do, she couldn't even find the start button! Maybe they are good for new homes designs, but will NOT take the chance. Thanks for the great and informative video! Kudos ma'am!

The repairman said it had likely gotten fried by the high temps of the self cleaning feature. I have read not to use silicon liners. Most say yes and some say no. Some say you shouldn’t broil with silicon liners at the bottom.
