- Frostgrave: Fantasy Adventures in the Frozen City has been out for five years now and this month launches its Second Edition. With a revamped spell list, some core rules changes for Experience and Warband Building and TWICE as many Scenarios this book is fully compatible with all the existing expansions and also full of content that make it great for existing players. Owen and I check it out with new Warbands (Owen's is a placeholder for a really cool design you'll see next episode).

Your Frostgrave content is what got me to follow you years ago. Your enthusiasm and great batreps is what has gotten me back into wargaming after a hiatus of 10+ years. Glad you are still goin strong making vids! Hope you've upgraded that ol' Macbook ;)

Always wanted to play tabletop miniature games. Thankfully my wife is open minded and i have ordered 40k recruit and looking at making a few warbands and scenery. Hope i can wrap my head around it 😁
I first found this channel back in 2015 through frostgrave videos. I can't wait to check out second edition!
Just wanted to point out, your starting is to expensive. 2nd edition changed starting gold to 400 gc instead of 500 gc, to account for the fact that the apprentice is 100 now instead of 200.

But it's an existing warband, so, is it really starting?
In my 2nd edition rulebook it states on page 83 "A wizard may only improve one stat after each game, even if they gained multiple levels - so,a wizard who gained 2 levels could increase Fight by +1 or their health by 1, but not both". It has the same rule for improving you spell roll, only 1 improvement after a game no matter how many levels you gained.
It does not limit how many times you level between games either. You are limited to 300xp per game but can bank any that you do now want to or cannot spend on a level up. It says that when you do spend the 100xp to level you can Improve a stat, improve a known spell or learn a new spell. The improve options are limited to once per game. The learn a new spell however does not have that limitation. You are allowed to learn as many new spells that you have the grimoires and you have available levels.
So unless you have grimoires for a spells you do not know, there is no point leveling more than twice and banking the rest.
I can see why they have done this, in 1st edition a good or lucky player could boost stats or spell far to quickly and make is difficult for their opponents to catch up. It could still happen but it wont happen as quickly as it used to.
Great battle rep, but you misplayed casting Leap on your Thief with treasure. Figures carrying treasure now only leap for half the distance, so 5" instead of 10"
Movement spells are so good. Easy to cast, nice for experience, with a lot of utility.
I'm surprised they weren't toned down a bit. Terrain creation spells are also pretty strong - if you don't roll like Owen for all your casts, anyway.
@@richmcgee434 In all fairness, they did play Leap wrong. It was toned down to only move for half distance on guys with treasure, and can no longer be used on enemies. It should have moved the Thief with treasure 5" only.
@@zanzabarr That's good news - I'd been playing it that way and I thought they're reverted back to the original text for some arcane reason.

This has become my favorite minis game in the past year
Poor Owen, that apprentice really wasn't pulling their weight. In our home game we're using the variant from Maze of Malcor for black market contacts, with only 2 rolls, but everything goes into the market, so all players (4 usually) can buy from it, with the roller getting first dibs. A little more book keeping, but it's an interesting variant. I'm happy with the updated rules, this seems like a good clean up rather than a total revamp. Excited about getting a copy! Thanks for the LP, you made my Monday. I hope your family is safe & well.
For the black market, we generate the treasure firstm and then we roll for the priority on buying. The higher one, gets first, then pass to the second and so. Generally, we don't have gold to buy nothing interesting :D. After the next game and before rolling new treasure for the black market, we make some rolls to dissapear older items, asumming others wizards or people adventuring on Felstad taking it
Nice. I started with rangers of shadow deep so I’m super happy to see how familiar this feels.

Really enjoyed this batrep. Wife is showing an interest, ordered some darksword miniatures for our wizards and a box of Frostgrave soldiers. Just gotta print up some terrain!

Dang. Owen had some rough casting rolls there.
If he hadn't Ash's whole side of the table would have been a sea of mud. Terrain creation spells look as strong as ever, as are movement tricks.
So freakin' excited for this!

Nah. Some d20 and any minis you have. You can use random stuff like pop cans for terrain if you need to. Give it a go!

I'm surprised the Monsters dont activate after the Wiz/Ap, but before the soldiers, like they do in Rangers of Shadowdeep. I though that would be brought over to FG.
Solo play rule set such as the FG supplement Perilous Dark does alter the phase order a bit. It splits creatures into two phases according to their stats. The stronger creature phase comes before the soldier phase.
It seems pretty fun. But right now I am starting two new Mordheim warbands for a new campaign.. But this I might have to check out..

Well you completely ignored many of the changed rules in 2e, like starting with less gold and not being able to leap as far while carrying treasure. But it was fun to watch.

Comment from '22: why for no Captain. They are available and also a useful source of activations. Don't get me wrong, love the show, it got me into the game. Just feel like Captains are worth the coin.
I have a 3d printer can I print my minis like I do for D&D and use them in this game?

My wife and I both have warbands, and almost our entire creature collection is from TitanForge's patreon of 3d printable stls. Thier stuff is gorgeous

Excellent battle report as usual great stuff. Is there any way I can find out what special terrain pieces and new monsters I need to make or buy for second edition? I've got it on pre-order but it would be nice to start on making the terrain or ordering new models :)
The 2nd edition has all the same scenarios as the first plus more. There is a guide for what you need for 1st edition so when you find that it will give you a good starting point.

Only two new creatures added to the bestiary for 2E. If you've been building your miniatures bestiary for 1E, you do not have much to add.

I'm digging Frostgrave as my main game to enter the hobby, what is the difference between Frostgrave and Stargrave? Is it worth it to pick both books to play? the rules are very different from each others?

Doesn't look like it's changed much from 1st edition. No XP for killing player models and the max 300 XP per game will limit fast advancement quite a lot but other than that what's different? EDIT: Ah, cover's better, isn't it?
A few other things changed. The basic troops(thug/thief) are now free, all the other troops went up in cost. Plus a bunch of spell changes, some with small changes and some replaced with different spells.
Leap is only 5" now if you are carrying treasure :(

New changes look good. I've had to send alot of archers to the job center. Other than that im good to go. Are Captain rules now roled into the main rules ?
In the old rules I did not take elemental bolt or bone dart because archers were just as deadly. Think I might have to take some missile attack now.

So in 2nd edition you can take all the damage you want to cast the spells? In 1e you could only take up to 3 damages 🤔 (19:07)
As far as i can see in 1st rulebook there was no limit to what you could spend. The example was for 3 health but I cannot see anything that says you can do more.

Can anyone recommend good dealers of North Star Miniatures in Canada? I have ordered from Meeplemart twice, but their restock times are frustrating. Crucible Crush had early stuff, but no restocks. Plastics and metal, I needs me Frostgrave!
Had the same issue several times. I'd normally check out Meeplemart and Thunder Games & Gifts. Other times, I ordered from Firestorm Games in the UK, which does free international shipping at 50 GBP (took 3-4 weeks for things to arrive). The latter isn't a fantastic option at the moment though due to how weak our dollar is.
I normally just order straight from Northstar. Though I'm interested in if there is something better locally.
As much as I'd love to order from them directly, that shipping fee can be pretty killer.
I know you are looking for Canada, but have you looked at Brigade Games in the states? They have different shipping rates for Canada compared to the rest of the world. Just a thought. brigadegames.3dcartstores.com
