    El ReyJose!! Shout out from CDMX. Your the only UA-camr that understands how integrated the US and Mexico. People have different needs and have different ideas. Mexico has worked out for me and it sounds like for you too. I was born and raised in Nebraska. Reasonable housing and more jobs than workers. But for retirement im staying right here.

      Jaja Thanks brother! I really appreciate the kind words! Makes me happy to hear I'm able to provide a voice of reason out here for so many. As you said there are many of us with all very different backgrounds and needs, it is not a one size fits all. I also lived all over the US and I have seen first hand how much Mexican culture is deep rooted all over the west. It would only make sense that Mexico is also very heavily influenced by the USA. Both are brothers from different mothers and more similar than we are led to believe. I am amazed myself the longer I am here how integrated both countries are with each other. Thanks again for sharing hermano!

    I love your attitude about paying people what they are worth. Some people are just so selfish, it's great to hear you advocate for being more generous.

    I was thinking about my gringo priviledge today. I'm in Cholula, Puebla where there aren't very many expats and hardly anyone speaks any English. My Spanish is a work in progress. It's difficult for me here, but that's because I don't know the language. But as a gringo, people try to help me. I'm a minority, but I'm treated SO much better than any minority in the USA. Do I get overpriced sometimes? Yes, I do. But that's on me. If I know the language, and take the time to know what the prices should be, then I won't be taken advantage of. I do that by being smart, and learning how things are done.

      I recently read a quote somewhere which said something to the likes of "When you over pay for something from who is truly in need of that money, you are not getting scammed or gringo priced, you are basically helping out that person without having them to beg for it, they are earning it and you are getting something you want in return. It is a great way to give and be able to help the individual preserve their dignity". I think that best represents us giving a bit more to those who dont have as much as we do but still treat us with the kindness and respect we give to them. Thank you so much for sharing with us!

    A while back my son and I walked into a bar in Cozumel away from the tourist traps to get a cerveza. $1 per Corona! Hell yeah! I struck up a conversation with a local. "You know," he said, "I'm only paying half that for my beer." Yeah, I get that, but it's all relative. In the states this beer would cost me 6 bucks so I'm happy to pay the gringo price.

    Have to agree, yes I have dealt with two corrupt Law Enforcement Officers, but that said, I am always treated very very well. Yes I do speak Spanish fluently, which certainly helps. Most Mexicans are some of the nicest, warmest people on the Planet

      @JoseArteagaTravels  6 місяців тому

      Thats right. Remember the cops in Mexico also work on tips! 😅 Unfortunately it is illegal to tip them so sometimes we have to remind them not to break the law

  • @kathleenrodriguez7010
    @kathleenrodriguez7010 6 місяців тому +3

    What you said about tipping in Mexico is true. I went out for dinner with a Mexican friend when I was in Cancún. He complained about tip on bill and only tips 10%.

  • @kathleenrodriguez7010
    @kathleenrodriguez7010 6 місяців тому +2

    My friend asked me what % we tip in the US. he also doesn't like that the different % for tips are on the bill. I told him it's the same in the US. Tipping in resort areas is the same as the US , but lots of tourists don't tip well. Most Mexican workers, work hard and make so little money. Working in resort areas gives them a better chance of a better life. It's too bad resorts and the tourist industry doesn't pay employees better. But, it's funny how local Mexicans don't want to give up their money too.

    • @JoseArteagaTravels
      @JoseArteagaTravels  6 місяців тому +1

      I totally understand. As someone that comes from the hospitality industry this is something that hits close home to me. I always start with a 20% tip no matter where I go and depending on the service I deduct from that percentage. I very rarely tip less than 20% though, but that is my rule of thumb. I know i might tip too much but thats because I also used to work for tips and know how it is. But i think the standard is 10% which as you know most Mexicans dont even tip that high. Thanks again for sharing!

    I don’t get the gringo price. But I do get abuso familiar. During Covid, I told my wife to give family members, who lost their jobs, $2000 pesos a month for food. Within a month we had distant cousins coming out of the woodwork. My wife was aggravated but I thought it was a blessing. Now we know who the jerks are in the family.

    The biggest gringo advantage, at least here in Northern Baja, is that the police pretty much ignore us. Unless you commit some flagrant traffic violation, or injure someone, or are involved in a crime, gringos are not hassled. Period. And that's my definition of paradise...

    Jose, you misunderstood one of Lenora Wilson's comments. I copy what she actually said: Lenora Wilson
    ""José I heard that Merida has now senior living places." You thought she said: more seniors are moving to Merida, I think is how you interpreted her.

    19:27 but isn't that dangerous because you're setting a precedence for other people to pay people a certain price? That's why they say don't tip them too much and don't pay them too much because then they're going to charge prices higher for everyone

    • @JoseArteagaTravels
      @JoseArteagaTravels  3 місяці тому

      It's called paying people a living a wage. Inflation has also hit Mexico like it has most of the world and not everyone has figured out that they have to raise their prices. The reality is that it is up to the individual to do what they feel is right. I think it is fine on a case by case basis especially if they earned it, but as I said it is up to the individual

    What is a Karen?

    • @JoseArteagaTravels
      @JoseArteagaTravels  6 місяців тому +1

      Great Question! Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia "Karen is a term used as slang typically for a middle-class white woman who is perceived as entitled or demanding beyond the scope of what is normal.[1] The term is often portrayed in memes depicting middle-class white women who "use their white and class privilege to demand their own way".[1][2] Depictions include demanding to "speak to the manager", being racist, or wearing a particular bob cut hairstyle." Here is a complete description en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_(slang)
