Thank you for such an informative video about bed layouts. We are currently in the process of researching everything possible so that we can hopefully buy our first motorhome. We have been through every configuration over the last few months and I think we are finally coming round to the two single beds at the back of the motorhome with the option of another double bed at the front of the van - either drop down or over cab for when our daughters want to travel with us. So many choices and so many big decisions! I am currently binge watching all your videos, they are so helpful to newbies like us.
Great. I think the sleeping arrangements are the most important thing. Everything follows from a good night's sleep.
Thanks for the comprehensive video once again. Can’t comment on Motorhome layouts being a caravan owner but sleeping arrangements are probably the number one priority for us.Someone once told me that you would need at least 3 different caravans before you found the one best suited for you. It’s an incredibly personal and individual consideration for everyone. Age, size, personal requirements, resources etc are paramount in making the right decision for you, the owner. Try out the caravan before you buy as much as you can. We have an Eldiss Chatsworth 550 with an in line fixed bed. At 6’ 2” it’s perfect for me with an upgraded mattress. Easy access to wc overnight, two distinct rooms separated by a door . It’s all about compromise at the end of the day.
They're probably right about the layouts, we've tried a few!
We found out from our trailer tent and Caravan days that not only did single beds suit us best, but because the wife likes to watch telly into early hours and sleep in late, it was best to sleep one each end. Then I don't wake her when her guide dog needs to be taken out to do his early morning bizzi.
The motorhome she chose has an across van bed at the extreme back which has been modified with an electric recliner under the matress, she's disabled so it suits her and it forms part of an L shaped lounge with the heater and TV shelf and drinks cabinet above diagonally opposite. No doubt she can keep a watchful eye should I sneak a drop too much, but she can also watch telly while I have to climb up over the cab into the servants quarters the other end of the motorhome. With the woof of course. Er, the woof sleeps in the cab.

We have a Bessacarr 424 which is under 6 metres. 4 berth but we only use it as a 2 berth. It has a powered drop down 2 stage double bed (Duvalay mattress is very comfy) in it’s lowest position you don’t need to use the ladder. The roof has a generous curve which allows the bedding to stay in place when the bed is raised. This is our first motorhome part ex our Bailey Valencia Unicorn caravan and yes it is shorter but we have everything we had in the caravan, end wash room, large fridge/freezer seating for 6 adults inside we are very pleased with it.
As always, you cover all the aspects with great understanding and I guess it's based upon your personal experience. I am new to the prospect of motorhome life and whilst I haven't bought one as yet, I have used them in the past via a hire. However, I am seriously considering a purchase and don't want to make such a huge investment only to find out that I made a simple mistake that turns out to be a huge blunder and watching your videos is so helpful and of great value for myself. Thank you both for all of your videos and for sharing your vast knowledge with us all.

Can only give my input from a caravaners perspective. What ever bed you decide on and we have tried them all with the exception of bunk beds, having a bed that's permanently made up and are able to leave the bedding on is the only way for us. We currently have a transverse island bed in our 2018 swift elegance. This extends outwards for night use but we leave it out and squeeze past ok. The bathroom is in a better position with this layout. The rear island bed is longer and probably provides more room than the transverse, however the shower is usually on oneside and the toilet on the other. This creates a narrow entrance to the bed area. The side bed is ok but one of you will need to get across the other if you need the loo at night. Whatever you choose make sure you get a decent mattress! Great video as usual Bob & Jenny.👍
Another great vlog, you guys are so informative and entertaining at the same time :) We've only owned a motorhome since August 2020 and went straight for the Auto-sleeper Corinium RB which has a island bed at the rear of the unit. The room isn’t dominated by the bed, there’s still ample floor space all around and no awkward steps. Storage is excellent, with either side of the bed are two wardrobes, chest of drawers, and handy surface with mains and USB sockets.
The thick and comfortable mattress overlies a slatted base, but the bed’s rather narrow at just 1.22m although it is more generous in length 1.94m. It may not suit everyone, but we love it!

Very informative vlog Bob & Jenny. I would say getting the right bed layout is one of the most important decisions both in a motorhome and a caravan. There are so many options and it needs great consideration, we like you have had bed layouts that don’t suit and ended up changing the van, I think we have now got something that works with a french bed. However I don’t think it’s the best one for us and will change eventually. Jenny raised a important issue with the French bed and Alde heating, the radiator! Angela sleeps on that side and often complains it’s too warm but you need the heating on!

We fell into the same trap of a drop down bed too then quickly progressed on to a Swift Kontiki sport Grand Prix 599 with an island bed at 6’1” one foot just hangs off the rounded corner but for us it’s perfect 👍

Great video guys...we have a french bed and an end washroom behind it... runs right across back of van ... with seperate shower and plenty of floor space and cupboards... brilliant...my hubby 6ft 2 and he has no problem with the bed.

Thank you both, that was interesting, had 5 different caravans over the last 45 years, now find the two long single beds in our 2 berth van the best ever with duvalays, left made up and a throw over to keep the beds tidy for day use. Hate the bed that traps one person against the wall or window, awkward for the loo at night or getting up to see to the dogs.
Yes, think we came to the same conclusion about twin beds.
Really interesting vlog, it takes a lot of time to choose the compromise you can live with, be it better bed, bigger washroom, extra space or whatever. We’re going from a small campervan to a caravan and currently having these conversations, nice one 👍🏻
Great vlog both! We had a caravan 1st off with a French bed - hubby used to reverse down the bed to get past me to get out of it 😂we've got a 6m motorhome now with facing sofas and got to make bed up at night time - not good if you have had a few shandies! 🤣
Hi Bob and Jenny, great vlog again. We changed from an island bed in a our first Motorhome and brought one where the bed drops down over the cab electronically . This really works for us as we reduced the length of our van by a metre, and the bed is 2m x2m so we can sleep across the van or down the length of the van which allows accessible for any need to get up through the night. With the metre we saved we have a end en-suite which is spacious and private. We also have experienced french beds which for us was a nightmare for accessibility.
Have a wild axs u. Shape lounge to make the bed. We just lift the back of and slot. In the middle job. Done

There’s a couple of extra things to think about if you prefer to share a bed if there’s 2 of you and if you do go down the route of a double bed is the compromise worth it ie someone is likely to have to be climbed over every night, or hanging off on the french bed side! Also if you’re unlikely to go away in your motor home as frequently as you do, you might put up with less ideal beds to get extra travel seats or a bigger garage. Doing a longish tour (let’s dream - one day soon!) makes an extra comfortable bed an absolute necessity! Great video as always 😀

Hi Bob, Jenny and Poppy, I prefer the single beds layout by far. For the practical aspect found island bed not much room and with the single beds you get a bigger washroom at the back. 👍🏴🏴🏴🏴👍🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴👍

Hi we got our first motorhome in 2017 a New Bailey Autograph 79 4T which had a rear bedroom with fixed twin beds. Up front it had an L shape sofa/travel seats which with practice made up to a small double. The problem with this bed was once you had made it up you were left with the backs of the chairs which look up a large amount of space. My husband said from the start that we should have waited for the double bed version but I fell in love with the look of the bedroom. Over the next year he would complain about the single beds and as this was our first van along with the fact that we hadn’t done any research before purchasing it we had a growing list of features that we wished we had. Eventually I decided to start looking at a different layouts. For the price the Bailey was great value for money but there were ongoing issues with several of the fittings. Look at reviews of workshops in your area and choose one that is recommended.
Anyway I hope there are no word limits 😅 In March 2020 we trained in the Bailey for a New Hymer BLMI 790. Basically the same size van but now we have a rear queen size (larger than a double) island bed, it slides up during the day which then looks like a back rest. In the front we have a drop down double bed, it’s over the driver and passenger seats which have to be folded fully forward but it gives you a very generous space up in the bed area. We are both now very happy but I still miss the feeling of space in the Bailey as you could basically walk the length of the van because of the wide gap between the single beds in the rear.
One last thing, all the beds in both motorhomes were made more comfortable with toppers however only Bailey bed in the lounge really needed it unless it was children sleeping there.
We were tempted by the Autograph 79-4T, but we preferred the washroom across the rear.
Interesting video, we are always looking at different bed & motorhome layouts for when we eventually have to replace our Autocruise Vista and TBH it's really hard to find something that is as small and makes such good use of the space available, donwside of ours is the comfort & durability of the bed, we have in the past broken the little flap off the bed and the runners have fallen apart, all fixed now and I always put a water bottle under the flap to support it nowadays.
The Vista is a great small motorhome.

Another great video Bob - We have a new Dethleffs Trend t7057 with single beds above a big gararge which suits us for our electric bikes. The only thing we dont like is that it is not easy to sit up in bed and read because of the locker. If we are going to change vans we would like a rear lounge with big garage, drop down over the cab but also a big payload. Unfortunately we can not afford the Carthago Liner for two

Very interesting and a lot to think about! We have a rear 'U' shape Lounge/Dinette with 3 windows and a big Skylight, so is very light and airy. We tend to leave the bed made up and lay on it of an evening to watch TV. We use the cab seats for just sitting and lounging around. We initially found the bed comfy but then cushion joints sink giving us back ache despite moving the joints about. So we use a 3" Memory Foam Topper! Great idea that was so much better!! Downside is getting to the lockers underneath so much to move to access them! But plenty of hideaway space under the middle of the bed. Only one unused seat cushion lives under there!
We've never tried a rear model, but foam toppers always help where cushions are used.

I’ve got a Elddis Autoquest CV60 which has a great layout, washroom, full kitchen and microwave, loads of storage and brilliant bed that just pulls out from a deep Chaise longue type sofa. Extremely comfortable memory foam mattress and so easy to get round even when fully out into a double bed. I keep my bedding on and just put a throw over the top so other than pushing the extension in/out and moving the one back cushion up, no problem.Absolutely perfect for me and my dog, however this is my second camper as I made a huge mistake with my first one which had a very high bed across the back. Think and research before you buy as I was very lucky and only lost £2,000 but could have been far more.
Yes, a good top, do your research, it could save a lot of money.
It’s very true. You have to compromise depending on what is important to you. In our case what was important to me was that my wife wanted a U shaped lounge. With hindsight some form of fixed bed would have been nice (guess who has to make up the bed each time🤨).
We have a bailey motorhome with six berths.
We use the rear lounge as single beds. I adapted two memory foam mattress to use instead of the cushions, which were uncomfortable. They work brilliantly and you can still use as lounge with panoramic views. Our 3yr old granddaughter loves the drop down and our daughter and son in law slept in the dinette area. We love it as it's roomy. Our first motorhome 4yrs ago. Did lots of research.
Yes, rear lounges are great especially if you can sleep without making up the bed.

Great video I had a swift 604 , drop down manual bed.... total nightmare continually faulted and in the end the van which was brand new was returned to swift as a faulty return! Real error in layout too... lounge was out of use so daughter couldn’t lay in as we couldn’t even get a drink! Also meant ladder required as otherwise person underneath couldn’t sleep. Total nightmare and would never go with lay out at all.. also bedding couldn’t stay on, like you , told bedding could stay in... KEEP AWAY FROM DROP DOWN BEDS!!

We tried a make up bed at the front bed with length ways bunk beds in 2012 with our kids who at the time were 16 and 14. They loved it but, like you, we found making up the double at the front like a task in the Krypton Factor. When we were looking for a moho 4 years ago we looked at the swift Rio but my 6 foot husband could not walk under the drop down rear bed without banging his head. I tried to get on the top bed but there was not enough room for me to sit up. When we bought we wanted something under 6 m so we have a rear lounge which makes up into a transverse bed. We have made up with sheets and duvet but that is a pain so in December we treated ourselves to a double memory foam mattress topper. I single duvet fits it as a sheet so should be much easier to make up, unfortunately we have not had chance to try it due to lockdown.
Hello Bob and Jenny, many thanks for another very informative video, We have the Benimar 463 with the twin beds at the rear which obviously join to form one very large full width double bed which we find extremely comfortable and spacious, although as you pointed out, the only trouble with this layout is the height and the need for a ladder but, that is only when you use it in the double bed format otherwise the built in steps can be used. I do like your current layout and to be fair it does provide you with a generous rear washroom, however, the main drawback with the fixed single beds and you didn't mention it to be fair, is the cuddle factor, its just not there or is the gap between the beds known as, lover leap. 😊 Great video and stay safe guys.

I had a Swift caravan with a 6'4" transverse Island bed it was great on my own but a bit of a pain when the girlfriend needed the loo in the middle of the night. An in-line island solved the problem for me, now she can get out of bed without having to shuffle around falling over and waking me up.
Yes one of the easiest layouts to get to the loo, that and twin singles.
We bought a Pilote in 2019, the decor was great it also had a huge garage big enough for our 2 ebikes and loads of other stuff. The downside was the island bed was waist height and had limited space at each side which made it difficult to get in and out and caused me some issues as I have shoulder problems so getting in and out became a pain. We traded it in for an elddis 285with two single beds and a rear washroom which is a far better layout. Like you said it’s an expensive mistake to make but we are a lot happier now with the layout. On another note maybe you could do a video on weights and the amount you can actually put in a motor home, I did a lot of research before buying our first one and was shocked to see how little you can actually put in your van and with all the new owners now buying them there will be a lot of people who are unaware of how little they can actually carry before you are overweight.
Yes, that's the reason I had our motorhome upplated to 3850kg, too little payload. We did a video a while back on going to the weighbridge with a borrowed Bailey 75-4 and found it was 50kg overweight. I will try and get ours on a weighbridge.
I had an electric overcab drop down on a burstner and it came adrift ,, omg ! Frightened the life out of me. Was repaired under warranty but never trusted it. I don’t like the dinette set up as I feel like I’m sat on a train and don’t have room to put my feet up and chill. I like the U shape lounge to chill during the day but do have to make up at night. I sleep in an overcab now to have the U shape lounge. It can all be a very expensive experiment to find out what suits you 😩

No, but we do feel safer on campsites than 'wild camping'.
I believe the term ‘Luton’ derives from the vans that were developed by Bedford and first used by the hat manufacturers in Luton as they allowed extra storage for hats to be stacked over the cab.
We should have remembered that as we lived in Luton!
Hi . In our 6m van build we have a king size bed over a garage . The bed extends over the dinette ( which is not needed at night ) and we use the seats to step up . Vince and Dee

We've got a Roller Team Zefiro 675 with rear transverse bunk beds. They are really quite big, almost a double each and really comfortable.
Got a Carado A461 motorhome with bunk beds for the kids at the back & it has double bed over cab great lounge space. We bought the Carado T447 with pull down bed in lounge but no space even when it was up. We changed after a month.
Bet that could have costly after a month!

We had a couple of MH's with the 6ft long seats that we used as beds at night.
Absolutely loved this layout, advantages to us were that we could make the beds a bit wider using the pull outs and still plenty of room to get up in the night. Extremely comfy with Duvalays ( the ones with the sleeping bag and built in toppers.
Also on this layout we had a huge end bathroom and very spacious L shape kitchen with a big sideboard oppersite so amazing amount of space and more storage than ww needed .
The longer seats mean you can both put your feet up to watch tv too.
Back to a caravan now and have tried just about every bed type 😂.
Favourites are either an island bed or fixed singles .
If i had to choose its def the fixed singles, easy to get in and out, loads of cupboards above both beds .
Absolutely hate a french bed, we found them claustrophobic, too small and obviously one of you is trapped against a wall and as you get older its not ideal at 3 in the morning when you need to visit the power room 😂

Being in our 70's finding putting a bed together every night to much work. Drop down with a ladder accident waiting to happen. We saw and bought the Adamo 75 4 DL to make life easy. Haven't got it yet few more weeks before it's ours.Storage inside not the best, but have a large garage so we can make it work, we bought for the beds.

We have just spent two days away in the Adamo 75 4DL as I said earlier we bought for the beds which are so comfortable easy to use no ladder comes down to hip level, we can leave our bedding on when we put them away but not the pillows, that is no problem getting them down each night from the really large deep locker at the back. Large fridge is perfect ,space to move around up front where the table is feels very open. Traveling the engine is very quiet can hardly hear it, its quite nippy also put your foot down no lag time plus very comfortable seating.
All in all were very pleased with everything. This is our third new van over 7 years this one is a keeper very pleased with it.
I fell asleep,lol joking yes you do need a good nights sleep and I suppose the bed situation could be the first thing you should look at, thanks Jenny and Bob,👍👍
It’s true the bed configuration does dictate the layout of your Motorhome or Caravan. You’ve probably been asked a thousand times (sorry) but how many motorhomes/caravans have you actually owned? Cheers Dave & Helen 👍

The other problem with overhead bed is weight if you two heavyish people they don’t work x
Watching your video again keep wondering when they will start using the Murphy beds as they do in vans in the USA and Canada. They look really interesting some good videos here on UA-cam showing them. They look pretty space saving to me.
There used to be some early British caravans that had those fold away type beds. They are space saving, the drawback is you can't store anything underneath them, and storage space is at a premium in smaller UK caravans and motorhomes.
I didn't know that but we have only had a motorhome the past eight years. Were still waiting for our new
Bailey Adamo75 4DL it's at the dealers and has been for weeks they are waiting for the DVLA to send the Registration back to them, can't be done by phone any more right now and it can take up to eight weeks to get it back. We are so ready to get on the road again.

One of our single beds is 6ft 4in long in our Swift Kon-Tiki Sport 574 if that helps. Poppy sleeps on the passenger seat at the front, usually...
We. Have rear lounge motorhome 6.3 metres but we sometimes sleep in two singles and don't need to pull the centre panel out ...would like a front seating area as well but don't want van over 7metres it's hard to find can with that layout
It would be compromised on kitchen and washroom size under 7m with a lounge front and rear. Have you looked at the Bailey Autograph 69-2. No lounge at the front but there is a seating area and somewhere to put your coffee at the front.
This is very helpful to me as im thinking of selling my house and living full time in a motorhome. Just wondering would you choose storage space over living space , im very confused about this
That's a big step to be considering especially in these times. Personally if I was going full time, I would prioritise living space as that's what you are doing most of the time. Reduce the amount of clutter and live simply.

Don't like the drop downs, too claustrophobic whether in or underneath them. Fixed island bed for us. 6'4" no real problem, although would like it a bit longer.
For the heigh beds the person mobility especially at night can be a concern

Yes, a very individual thing, we tend to have different sleep patterns, so single beds work well for us.

I have a 7.4m swift escape 694 with island bed....i am 6 ft 1 and find the bed great...was a tad too hard so we have a feather topper and that makes all the difference

I seem to remember this style was the start of the fixed bed layout designs for 6m motorhomes. I always slept on the cut off side being 6ft 2”’ tall I used to sleep with my right foot resting on the tiny shelf under the wardrobe lol.
While it was lovely not having the chore of making & putting away beds it did restrict room in the kitchen area & the van felt cramped.
My elderly parents who shared the van had great difficulty manoeuvring on the bed to get back towards headboard as Bob showed in his vid crawling on all fours lol.
The other negative as many know Is the person sleeping nearest the bathroom has to either get out or move to let the other out should they need to get up in the night. Would we entertain this layout again? personally NO.
