  • Ballad singing is one of the purest forms of old-time mountain music, featuring only a singer's voice and the story they have to tell. Eight-generation ballad singer, Donna Ray Norton, and Grammy-winning artist David Holt provide a brief history of this traditional style of music, and how it continues to this day in Asheville, North Carolina.

In Mexico there is the idea that in USA there are no cultural roots as deep as in Mexico. That its cultural manifestations are superficial... I hope all those who think like that would listen to this music. The deep and beautiful roots that reflect its notes and songs make us feel the spirit of its people. Ancient tradition.
    Admirable.

The evil folk who have stolen the reigns of this countries culture (aka the cultural engineers) have done a very good job of annihilating our culture and dumping poison on our roots. They hate us, and they are very strong. Some of us are realizing this, and are scrambling to preserve what hasn't already been forever lost.

true however, as a mexican, having lived in the states for a while (not appalachia though) i noticed a sort of totalizing pressurizing trend which rewarded stupidity, superficiality and immediacy among young people. it's fucking sad really

@@kvetchnik Well, that's true but not only in American culture. Also in a good part of the so-called "western" world. It is part of what is sought for that economic system. And it is also true that this system was born as it is now, in the USA.
But I'm talking about the country's ancient culture, its roots.
If you investigate the cultural roots of the USA, there is effort, beliefs, liberalism but not of the current style, but more humanistic... A different country.

I do not know of the singers, but a dulcimer musician by the name of Don Pedi has some amazing songbooks of Appalachian Ballads that he has collected for over 40 years in the Appalachian Mountains.... he is still living and does dulcimer concerts. What is so great about his concerts, he gives a history of the song and has some wonderful insights to Applachian music. As a side note, he was the dulcimer player in the barn dance seen in the movie Song Catcher..... a fascinating man and talent!!!!
