    One thing that is quite important to mention: The heat pump is not standard everywhere. It is in the nordic countries, but not anything further south. In germany the heat pump is only available in Line 3 (Line 1 to 3 replaced the other titles for trim levels). At least in germany ACC is only available in Line 2 and 3 (so middle and highest trim level).
    For germany it looks like this:
    Line 1: Online satnav, DAB+ radio, heated seats and steering wheel, armrests in the front, 18 inch wheel and type 2 cable.
    Line 2: Backup camera, ACC, keyless entry, design-seats, middle console including two usb-c slots for the rear passenger and ambient lights. LED matrix headlights and LED matrix brake and reach lights, 19 inch wheels, tinted glass and exterieur style pack in silver.
    Line 3: Augmented reality head up display, soundsystem beats, panorama glass roof, 20 inch wheels, lane assist with emergency assist, lane change assist, comfort phone including inductive phone charging, comfort seats.
    Now, the trim levels may be different according to where you buy the car, the most glaring thing is the heat pump.
    Personally i went for line 3 in the color that is shown in the video, however with black-grey interior, the white one was not available.

      @@DG-uv3zw Well, not exact. Before government grants Line 1 will cost below € 40.000, Line 2 below € 46.000 and Line 4 below € 50.000.

    I get that having bigger wheels theoretically improves performance, but I don't see why the wheels get progressively bigger as you go into the higher trim levels. Having bigger wheels just means ride comfort is worse and tires are WAY more expensive.

      @@phamnuwen9442 True, one can always buy a second set of 18 inch wheels, after all two sets makes sense anyway for winter and summer tires. At least in climates where there is a real need for them.

      @@Soordhin They only real advantage is to be able to fit bigger brakes. But if you have masses of regen, those may not be needed - or just use better compounds/materials.

      @@eubikedude True, in my opinion the main reason is looks, nothing else. If you see how much many people are willing to pay for special and big rims, there's your answer. Quite honestly, i did preorder Line 3 with the big wheels, but i would much rather have the 18 inch ones. Oh well, i might have to buy a second set then.

      I'm pretty sure they do have memory functions that you are able to synchronize with your phone. Meaning a car you have never driven adjusts to your preferred settings.

      In one screenshot i saw the menue-item/point called 'user' (in german 'Benutzer')...so.i Think you can create/manage several profiles (like you can do it in a tesla)...it makes sence, to manage that on the screen and NOT via Buttons At the seat.

      Volkswagen is the master of cutting costs and if they make a lot of cars those pennies add up. That's why not even the doorhandles are metal but plastic that's been covered in a layer of metal.

    Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that the 1st Edition does not get the trailer hook feature. Only the standard ones following the first edition. And then it will be only for light trailers and bicycle racks (75 kg max load).

      15 percent of the recent Golfs have a trailer hook. I assume many more of home owners with solar pannels. A car without a trailer hook is useless for me.

    18, 19, 20 inch? Why the... do they fit so big wheels on new cars?
    Bigger rims may give better looks, but also harsher ride, more expensive tyres and higher risk av damageing the rim. What's wrong with the good old 16 inches?

    You can use the heads up Display in Demo mode. I tried it at IAA. It is awesome in comparison to Kona.

    Personally I'm not impressed - was waiting for this model hoping to have real alternative to M3... I'm owning VW cars since years and can see a lot of commonalities ... e.g. ergo sits I have in my MY16 VW Touran - in fact they are almost identical... but door side panels are just awful - sorry to say but looks more like Trabant :D - the mess under the hood is also funny - if this car would come from startup I would be more than excited but it's coming from one of the top automotive groups - they had billions for R&D... up to now all static tests looks for me rather neutral/negative - no excitement... waiting for road tests but definitely I won't consider this car as my next one... and of course thank you Bjorn for your work!

    I will never understand why you still built electrical seats without memory function. Especially in this digital car, it would be so easy to add profiles and add tremendous value to the whole thing.
    Electrical seats out, higher quality materials in, would the better way... in my opinion

      @@bjornnyland Surface rusting of the disc brakes rotors never made any issues on my Model 3, or any car I ever owned. Even if it was unused for some weeks. But maybe because I live in a dry region.
      And with the ID3, the front brakes are discs, so the rusting issue will still be there.
      So I'm sorry, it's more cost cutting there than anything else.
      It's maybe acceptable for a Dacia Sandero, but not for a 40k+ car.

      @@pxidr when you break, the weight of the car shifts onto the front axle, so its probably going to be used pretty much every time you drive the car and use the breaks a bit harder, e.g. you didnt get a traffic light, have to break from 50 km/h in less than 25 meters, .. so it makes sense. the rear axle is 'lighter' during breaking, so regen breaking should do the job fine, unless you have a proper emergency breaking, you probably never use the rear breaks

    So in Switzerland this 1St edition with 58kWh battery will cost 54'000CHF. Swiss Franc is comparable to USD. You pay 7.7% VAT (already included in the price).
    Or lease at 499CHF/month on 48 month lease with 13'500CHF down payment (first rate). With the lease, you are getting free maintenance including liquids.

    IMO changes for Max compared to BASE model are quite modest. Material quality is only so-so. I'd probably just pick base version and fit a nicer set of wheels. I have the feeling the more luxurious versions just are there to provide more margin for VW and are not neccesarily best bang for buck for the customer. Just like with the Tesla Model 3.

    There seems to be cheap hard plastics everywhere in the front and lining the doors (from your tapping test). Only one section on the dash seemed to be soft touch. If true that’s a major disappointment and would be a deal breaker for me. Please let me know if I’m wrong.

      Yes ...the interior trims have the hard cheap matte plastic look and feel .. Compare this interior finish to the BMW i3 for example .

      Probably does ;) But then, i had the clock on an € 80 million airbus a320 display nonsensical times and dates as well, after it had been built for more than 30 years (which is kinda scary as a lot of functions depend on those times and dates being correct).

    Not really sure about the interieur. I don't particulary like the color and finish. From the "knocking test" it seems to have a lot of hard plastic parts, someting I wouldn't expect in the highest trim level of a VW car. On the other hand, there are gimmicks (IMHO) like massage seats and HUD. I would rather trade such features for a higher quality look & feel.. Apart from that, it seems to be a pretty decent car.

I would rather go for BMW 5 series (as showroom car) with some mileage. I found nice 5 series for 55k € a month ago. This shit can't even compare to that car.

    We are still waiting in the UK for our price and specification hope because of Brexit we are not last in the line, I see heat pump standard in Norway but don’t think that will be the case for UK. I also don’t think electrically adjusting seats a priority for me. Can’t wait to see what the specifications will be for us.

      USA won't get this model. Look for the ID.4 revealed at Frankfurt. It's more of a crossover style.

    Rear drum brakes really make sense on most family cars, especially in countries with moderate speed limits and a lot of salt in the winter. Unless you really love changing stuck calipers.

      also disk brakes "drag" the pads all the time whereas drums have return springs to PULL the shoes away from the drum and no drag

      They must do that with all costumers cars. Brought my GTI in for repairs. Came back with scratches like they had lunch on the hood of the car.

    I have to say that this is the only car I am impressed and excited about apart from Tesla Model 3. Both cars offer some unique benefits. I wish these two cars got a child: That would be the PERFECT electric car.

    I love that green color it’s very nice 👍 but the highest trim having a drum brakes ? What are you kidding me vw? That’s cheap and bad for performance a big down side for a car that isn’t that cheap, but it’s a nice ev with very cool features

      Johnny JP there’s a number of reasons for rear drum brakes - they are cheaper yes, but in a BEV where regen and front brakes do the vast majority of the braking it makes sense; the rear discs won’t rust, and they will be more reliable and need less maintenance. Drums are ideal for hand brake use which is what they will be used for mostly.

    My Tesla bias - which gives me 1000 excuses to find triny bits of 'meh, not for me' - aside... I think VW has really tried to create a good product. And yes - my Tesla bias is also screaming immediately - in my opinion if they could hold on to this new idea of 'car', VW has the potential to get back to their once 'car for small people' - peak they had back then with the 'Käfer' or 'Beetle' as it's in english... let's hope they stick to the new plan bc I'd love to once drive a VW again that I can be proud of and not immediately think of 'scam'. Until then I will drive my Tesla and happily take a new look at VW in a few years.

    Braking power is the wrong word to compare disc brakes with drum brakes.
    They are even better for one-time braking, but the brak fade is a huge thing. (You don't need big discs for a strong brake, you need them for better cooling)
    So in a combustion car, where Idiots only accelerates, half the time with the motor, and the rest of the time with the brakes disc breaks giving longer braking power.
    But in an EV where regen overtakes a lot of the braking, dum brakes are perfect for the emergency. In the end, both types are too strong and will cause the wheel to completely stop so an ABS is needed.
    I think the reason they use disc brakes at the front is the anxiety some people breaking too much and can't handle the faster breaking power loss.

    Bjorn and viewers, I just cant help but wonder how safe it will be, especially in front collisions; taking into account the small front side, the short area between the possible colliding car and the passenger in the ID3. Less space and less material to absorb a possible impact.
    Will it be like a Smart ? Have they solved this by use of certain materials and techiques ?
    Looking forward to the safety ratings!

    Bjørn, if you want to test a good HUD (Head up display), just try the new BMW 530e hybrid. Not pure electric.. but worth a look. Make sure it has a high trim as well.

      A m3 performace costs 56k currently, long range 52k in Germany with all boni and with lower value addex tax, the ID.3 should get cheaper as well!

    Small front = less safety compared to Tesla Model 3.
    Its a way to make cheaper car.
    Subwoofer placement is a bit weird.
    But looks like a nice car overall! Could easily be popular depending on price.
    Wish VW would comment on battery life expectancy and electric motor. I still believe that Tesla has the biggest incentive to build a car that last a LOT longer than all other produced cars. They look at cars as a platform that they can use to profit from later!

      We will see about that. I am quite sure that the ID3 will also have a very good rating. I am quite sure VW knows what they are doing regarding safety .

      @@nukularpictures Of course it will get EURO NCAP 5 stars. This is VW we are talking about. But with or without 5 star ratings there is still difference between 5 star cars! NCAP should (if they cared about safety) make things such as rear collision avoidance a thing to get 5 stars just a single example. But of course they will not do this because German auto is not ready. But when they are they will for sure require it! Think about it.

      @@nukularpictures From a safety testing rating. Both will have 5 stars. But that is only ratings. Physics is physics. When you sit a lot close to the front, a frontal accident is more dangerous. It is also a lot cheaper to make a boxy car rather than non boxy. NOTHING wrong with boxy cars. Good to have cheap vehicles on the roads. But that does not change facts.

    Pffffff, wtf, drum brakes on the rear, it's true that on ev is not necessary to have immense classic brake power, due to regen brakes but if you have a nice 20 inch alloy wheels those drum brakes will look like shieeeeet

      Drums for this cars are more than enough. Breaking is mostly done in the front wheels (more than 70%) and regenerative breaking from the EV motor is massive. I can't be 100% sure, but regen plus drums in this car will be more effective than disc brakes in the other cars.

    Nexmove have already said that the 55KW battery base is around 40k euros , mid trim 45K and high trim 50K . I must say the high trim does put shame to model 3 .
