Few people can understand the pleasure derived from creating something like this. Sussing it all out of bourse is a high percentage of the pleasure.
Thanks for watching.
I am 74 and getting back into oxy acetylene cutting and welding. Love your vedioes.
They are very helpful to me.
Richard, that's great! I wish you success :)
In addition to the myriad of compliments, I really appreciate how polite and calm you are with every step of the process of each project. I have worked with some that get very frustrated and turn rather ugly...dims their genius when that happens. Thank you Paul!!!
Thanks Mark. Yes, somewhere along my journey I learned patience :)
💕😆😆💕🎏
@@enelra4271 Thanks for watching!
Earn your PhD for patients... how about a pHb in patience? What could the H be for? Ideas?
you all probably dont give a shit but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid forgot my login password. I would love any tricks you can give me!
This channel really deserves to go full viral.
I'm with you :)
I agree. 6061 was my fav before I found you! You have a bob ross attitude
@@isaacgraham6506 I've heard about that guy Bob Ross :)
Best machining UA-cam channel of 2021! Awarded for: content, videography, teaching skills, and the clean and well organized shop.
Thank you Vernon :)
Such an elegant process strategy! Me being a CNC guy, I attack things very differently. And, I would wager, it would actually take me longer to make that one-off clamp in a CNC than it took you manually. A lot of us CNC guys stand to learn a whole bunch from you crafty manual guys! You could have titled this video "Challenge Accepted!" LOL. That is one fine tool accessory!
Thanks for watching and commenting 😉
Oh my goodness. The trick of turning the vise upside down to get the piece level was worth the thumbs up just by itself! Awesome!
Cool. Sometimes it's just the little stuff that helps a lot. Thanks for watching!
Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels! I really appreciate learning something while being entertained. Great stuff Paul and Mitch.
What the heck, Paul Brodie has a UA-cam channel. As a 15 year old, middle of the 90s, steelframes from brodie, Chance, Frank the Welder, etc. were part of my dreams and gives me goosebumbs. But unfortunately, never can afford one in these times. Then in the 2000s, the market flooded with unemotional bikes and many of the good old brands died unfortunately. Now I ride Carbon bikes which works perfect, but the feeling will never be the same like from the beginnings on steel frames and rigid forks. We all were pioneers.
Keep up the good work and greetings from germany
Well Germany, good to hear from you. Thanks for watching!
Love the tip about flipping the drill press vise upside down to align the workpiece - been cutting metal for 40+ years and always happy to learn something new.
Also the comment around 13:50 - 'but you're hiding little imperfections, or sometimes a bit bigger.'
Tom, thanks for watching!
After two years of planning and accumulating the gear I was ready to draw and start my randonneur build when I found your channel. Perfect timing! Love the clarity of thought, videography (thanks Mitch), and editing. I haven’t found anything that conveys the work process as well as you do. Thanks for making the effort to start up your channel. For a torch holder you might also like @17:35 in Dave Engel’s “Miniature Horses Wood Carriage Wheels”
Thanks Chuck. Yes, we really try to show the "process" of creating something.
Always great to watch a true craftsman.
I appreciate the way you demonstrate order of operations in these videos. And of course the mic stand.
Another cool idea. Eyecrometer works well. I use it myself a lot. Great video. Ps. I used to work in machine building industry as a quality controller. It was a joy working with people like you.
Thanks for watching.
The weather had me inside almost all day and I watched a bunch of your videos. I really enjoy your content. Thank you
Thank you.
You are a crazy person. That's awesome.
I get the same vibes watching Paul do metal projects as Derista doing woodworking.
I appreciate the length's lengths you'll go to appease your audience! Thanks
Nice work. I have a J28 too. I used it for about 35 years till I bought a Meco Midget. The Meco is now my favorite torch. I weld mostly 4130 fuselages and other weldments for aircraft.
Thanks Kevin. I'm sure that welding aircraft fuselages is a fussy job!
I'm in love with your shop !
Wish I could rent it for a year or so..
It takes decades for a shop like that to take its shape. Love the projects, you are an inspiration sir.
Cheers !
Thanks Jason! Yes, my shop is constantly in a state of evolution as I move from one project to another. Always working on the "flow" if you understand that term. Mitch and I are certainly having some fun making these videos. Should be able to keep it up for a while :)
7:23 I know it's a lot of work for a Torch Holder.
But it will be a Very Nice Torch Holder.
Mostly why we watch.
Great viewing after meal time, LOL.
( well at least that's when i am watching IF i have the time ?? )
You put a smile on my face! You have all the great tools and a relaxed mood. RWB
Thanks Richard!
Found this channel from watching ebike builds. I'm now hooked and lost my entire Saturday! 😂 It really is a joy to listen to a true craftsman!
Those coarse-toothed files are still used in aerospace. They call them vixen files. They work great for filing flat, straight edges on aluminum sheet metal panels.
My Father was an aircraft inspector in England, and that's where some of my files came from. It you treat them well, they can last for decades!
I like all the helpful tips you put into vids such as hold the scissors and move the cardboard
My Grade 7 art teacher taught me that!
It inspires a change in oneself when watching someone who is very skilled yet just as humble. Thanks Paul.
Thank you Jimbo.
Like the holes clamp it's like locking pliers instead of window crank or to braze a spare key to a old screwdriver handle
Much better,,but but I kinda like the other one, it's just like mine. LoL
Now I've got to build me a new one.
Great job.
Nice videos Paul! Compliments on the excellent camera work & editing too :-)
Here in the colony's we call them Vixen files, primarily used them on aluminum but autobody shops also use them on Bondo body fillers. Very much like your motorcycle and bike building.
In the UK they are refered to as Rasps as far as I know or at least what my metalwork and woodwork teachers called them.
Can u plez make a video on how to accurately fashion disc brake mounts for rear disc brakes. Steal frame.
A lot of dropouts now come with ISO disc brake mounts, so frame builders don't go to the trouble of making their own. Also, frame jig manufacturers, such as Cobra, also make fixtures for mounting other kinds of mounts. Check out what they have. I don't know when we will get back to bicycle content, sorry.
Another great video. Really nice content and great camera work. I enjoy watching all the machining and welding too. Thanks for sharing with all of us. Dan
You made a beautiful tool! In the belt sander video, though, I was thinking that some kind of hoop on the mike stand would make mounting the torch less finicky...
At 18:74, I'm pretty sure I smelled the sweet smell of honda polish... love the smell of that product... 😁🍻
Thanks guys for the amazing videos
Just love what you are doing. Your channel came up by accident and now I am subscribed! Not much into bikes but motorcycles and just metal working will keep me here!!
I made something like that years ago. Clamped the O2 and acetylene tubes, and has a sharpened point leading to the work. It was for cutting circles. A protractor for the torch.
You and Tom Lipton/OxToolCo with the files. :) I'd call that good company.
Alan, that sounds good but I'm not familiar with Tom Lipton.
@@paulbrodie He's one of the "OG" machinist video channels. He has several hundred videos. He doesn't edit videos for time, but there's a LOT of good information.

Just found your channel I love it I used to make jewellery I made a casting machine out of a bicycle rim I made a kilm I and imade a vibrating table to vibrate my molds from an old drill with a hockey puck attached off center funny but did the job when combined with a sm.table on springs. Ireally enjoy watching your Channel makes my stuff look archaic I never had a welder I did some brazing and I really enjoy watching what you're doing it's almost as satisfying as doing it myself I'm getting a little old now but you take car
Mark, thanks for finding our channel and liking our videos. You take care also.
Great video again as always! I remember reading years ago about your Excelsior recreation projects, would love to see some video action on that project! cheers
Nicely done 👌 Eye is in the detail
Nice as always! Maybe the most overengineered part i've seen on this chanel, but looks great
I'd like to take full credit for the "over engineering". Thanks for watching!
Very nice but I can’t help feeling the old one worked just fine! I would really like a video on your lathe, milling machine and tooling that you like? Both look very nice. I fact anything on tools, files that last, hacksaw blades, your little burr scrapers......
and maybe materials, flux, rods - all your secrets:)
Great job, your number of followers increases seriously ! 👌
Dreadnought files have curved teeth and millenicut files are the same style with straight teeth. Both self clean very well and work particularly good with aluminium.
They seem to work well with aluminum too.
They like baby powder, WD-40, and a bunch of other things to assist in self cleaning.
Many don't have a tang but do come with an offset hole at each end to mount them in a holder.
They also work well with lead body filler, Gene Winfield might have a few.
Ok, I just learned a new word... "millenicut". Thanks. I do not have any of those.
I love your channel, your engineering is amazing, just watching your filing technique though and wondered if you have ever tried filing curves using a counter radious technique? I'm 67 now but still feel my Welsh metalwork teacher looking over my 12 year old shoulder instructing me to roll the file in the oposite arc to the curve. This was to prevent flat spots I think but I do it to this day
Yes, other viewers have mentioned that filing technique. I tried but it doesn't feel natural.
@@paulbrodie Its worth keeping at it I promise
Just discovered your channel not long ago Paul. Man I love you work!! Thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge.

Thank you Ben!
Great little project. Nice tools make work more enjoyable.
In one of your videos I saw a brief view of your TIG torch holder. Could you show a little more of that. I'm just starting to learn TIG welding and want to make my own torch holder. From the glimpse I got yours looked like it may be a good salutation.
Thank you very Mitch
just discovered this channel and am really enjoying it. so many delicious pieces of knowledge in every video. You and mitch and the editor deserve way more subs!
Mitch is the editor. We thank you for watching!
Nice work and good timing!I’ve been thinking of replacing the zip tie holding my throttle/idle cables to the bars with something like that. Thanks Paul
Checkout my Instagram post Sept 28/20 Neat little cable holder using a zip tie and a short piece of rubber fuel line. I heard about it from a friend. brodie8191
I have a 4”, 6” and 8” record heat sink myself 🙂 all made in England.
I love your videos!
You edited out the closeups of pauls filing work :( anticlimax when camera goes in to show up close and it cuts to the next scene xd
Mitch and I are both still learning, we'll try to do better next time. Thanks for watching!
your vidoes are all really great! any plans on covering the excelsior in the near future? im very interested in that project!
Hmmm, that could be a possibility...
Absolutely love your content Paul! Can I ask why you wear gloves when using the bandsaw? I was always told growing up it was a safety hazard because the blade could pull the glove in
Yes, there are different ways of looking at things. I am very careful around the blade, but I figure that if I did slip, the blade would have to cut through the glove first before it could attack my finger. Thanks for watching!
i just have to ask... where is the money in the bicycle industry???
I'm 10 years in at a service and sales shop and am in envy of your skill and toolcollection!
thank you for the great content!!!
Thanks Chris. You are correct, it is not easy making $$$ in the bicycle industry.
Another example of excellence! In the future, can you build another motorcycle part? Or infact, build another motorcycle? I wish I was your neighbor 🥲
Yes, there will be some motorcycle content coming up. I'm back to working on my Aermacchi road-racer.
@@paulbrodie best news of the week!!!!
I like the tongue in cheek eye chrometer. Lol
Very informative. Nice relaxed style. Have subscribed.
Any chance of a workshop tour?
Your comment just showed up after 2 months. We did a Shop Tour. Did you catch it?
Ahhh, such a great video...as always! I have a question, could you have silver soldered instead of using the tig or is there a benifit I’m missing?
Stainless is not always easy to silver solder, and silver solder really works best where two surfaces come together with a certain amount of area involved, so the heat from the torch can pull the silver in through what is known as capillary action. So, I would not use silver solder for this job.
In Canada where do your source most of your materials? McMaster-Carr has it all but I have trouble buying small amounts of material from them.
Did I hear you mention Sabre Industrial at one point?
McMaster-Carr was selling to me until they found out I lived in Canada. Then they refused. I use Sabre Industrial, Technicut for tooling, and Wajax for seals and bearings.
@@paulbrodie Thanks for the info, I was able to get one order out of McMaster but it took me 3 tries.
Its off topic but where did you get the bench vise you use all the time ? I see its made in england seems very solid and mounted well
It's a 5" Record Vise, pretty common in Canada. I think they were sold by Thomas Skinner.
I bet you will return to your hose clamp idea on your torch.
Hooked & subbed
Hi Paul, I’d really like to know more about your motorcycle projects, there’s always a bike in the background of the videos....
Andrew, have patience, it will happen. In the meantime, the motorcycles are all on my website: www.flashbackfab.com
Never clicked faster on any video🔥😂
Now I know this is a very old vid, but I thought I'd offer a hint.. Should anyone working in alu want some of those files you mention, they're wood working files. Theyre also called Carving files.. Iwasaki make some incredible ones ;)
If you weld a washer on the stainless steel round stock where it protrudes from your clamp you might consider adding a folding feature to your hanger one day.
Great conversation pieces are always worth the effort.
Jim, if I had conversation pieces in my shop how would I ever get any work done?
@@paulbrodie Give them really hot coffee?
Sorry, a case of ambiguity on my part, I stepped in some last week.
Your clamp hanger torch thingy hangs way above a mere conversation piece.
Like that guy with Feynman diagrams all over their family van would say: it's the idea that gets me excited, exploring the possibilities. I used to drive my parents nuts... until my teacher had a flat.
Edit: Ambiguity, it sticks to everything.
I love building ideas too, especially with earplugs.
Not complaining but I'd prefer a brazed on copper rod.
👍👍
That's a rather elaborate torch hanger but why the hell not make it assetheticaly pleasing.
You are right. But I am retired and the UA-cam channel has to be fed, so here we go!
Video showing drill sharpening please...thanks Paul
Someone else asked too...
