    This still boggles my mind and I cannot believe that an official could stand in front of a camera and defend this nonsense. Who knows what went on behind closed doors, but the USGF and USOC should be thanking their lucky stars. Imagine what a scandal it would have been if one of the girls, particularly Shannon Miller or Kim Zmeskal, had gotten hurt at the secret trials and couldn't compete? The USGF never would have lived that down.

  • @intldawn

    No, she didn't. Amanda finished 8th at the trials, so she was never part of this process. She was not forced off the team.

    Exactly. Kim performed well usually at Nationals meets but when she competed internationally she always bombed. That is why she was not put on the 91 World and 92 Olympic teams despite doing well at the National and Qualifying meets. She had already proven in 89 and 90 especialy she cant handle the pressure of World competition. That plus international judges were much more critical of her flaws and very unpolished gymnastics style, even when she hit a routine.

      Then Kim Kelly was right, she should hot have "strung her along" . If she had such flaws she should have scored lower at the trials or previous championships for that matter.

    The USAG did us a favor by not putting Kim Kelly on the team, but the secrecy and lack of transparent and obvious favoritism displayed by this selection process really was psychologically damaging to the athletes and didn't help the athletes in their preparation for Barcelona.

    That's because there's only one guaranteed spot and the Karolyis,And the USGym Officials chose the team based off weight and events you have to take a balanced team. You can't have A team where all parts have the same strength. And they obviously have chosen right when picking people like Nastia, Shawn, or the recently crowned olympic champs the Fab 5....

    Exactly! All of Bruce's scores counted except floor I believe, which showed her important contribution. I really doubt any of Kim's score would have counted, and she certainly would not have received a 9.95 on vault with her form.

      And during that time the first up usually gets lower scores, and Wendy was the first up on bars and floor. In my opinion, her compulsory floor routine was way underscored. She out scored Dawes on bars, beam, and scored higher on her optional vault, but Dawes slightly passed Wendy in the final standings due to floor (where I feel she was underscored in compulsories, and was first up in the optional round as well). Oh well, it's history and thankfully they medaled!

      One reason she was left off the team besides her sloppy form which others have mentioned already was she tended to perform very consistent and great in U.S meets, hadly any mistakes, then crash and bomb when she went overseas. Look at her performances at 89 worlds and the 90 Chunichi Cup. So just because she stayed consistent and solid at Nationals and Trials, apart from a fall on bars day 2 of Nationals, does not mean she would have at the Games. Her history indicates not.

    KIms scores would have been mostly 9.7s and maybe a few 9.8. She would have outscored Wendy on compulsory beam, optional beam , tied her on both bars sets, scored lower on vault and tied her on floor. The US lost the silver medal on the floor and bars optionals, where they gave away .5 on the landings.

    • @tylerbam7183
      @tylerbam7183 4 роки тому +2

      You mean lost the silver medal on that. I guess their thinking was Bruce gave them a better shot at silver (and a better outside shot of gold, but that was always a long shot) with Bruce than Kelly. Or that if Kelly had a meltdown and a couple others had falls on events she fell on they could even be in danger of losing bronze to China.
      One thing to remember about Kelly I guess is she was often consistent in U.S events but bombed when she went overseas. It happened at the Chunuchi Cup and the 89 worlds. So just because she was pretty consistent at Nationals and Trials does not mean she would have been at the Games.

    • @twebster9498
      @twebster9498 2 роки тому +1

      The only place Kim might have outscored Wendy would be on beam, if she hit. Maybe she could equal Wendy's score on optional bars but not compulsory bars. Kim struggled with every handstand in the compulsory routine especially the bail to handstand on the low bar.

    • @jamesr2164
      @jamesr2164 8 місяців тому +1

      The only reason why Kim Kelly placed above Wendy Bruce at the trials was because Wendy did fall on beam. If that mistake had not happened then Wendy would have placed above Kim. In the end USA believed that Wendy would score higher overseas than Kim. I know that sucks for Kim, but I still to this day believe that they did make the right choice, and we did garner our first team medal ever in a non-boycotted Olympics.

  • @metsdudenj
    @metsdudenj 9 років тому +1

    This was an unfortunate result of a very flawed process. I remember then they moved to a process where the top two or four made the team and then the rest made it through camps or trials or whatever. This also backfired, because it put Pam Bileck and Courtney McCool on Olympics teams when neither of them belonged on them and performed dismally. People even say Melissa Marlowe didnt belong on the 88 team. It seems that there is always someone who gets the short end of the stick. I do think that placing Betty and Shannon on the team was the right decision. I didnt see the performances at the Brown camp so I cannot commment on who deserved that last spot, but if I remember correctly, Campi was placed on the team over all of them, and then replaced by Bruce at Barcelona.

    • @metsdudenj
      @metsdudenj 3 роки тому

      @Ekaterina The Greek Well the field was also pretty weak from places 7-10 and then with the withdrawal of Mar and Yamashiro, Marlowe pretty much locked up the spot. Faehn and Phillips did not deserve to be on the team, but a healthy Mar would have really helped the team

      @@enchantedella6495 Hmm, well, I am not so sure about that at least in 1987 she was the highest scoring American at worlds until she fell on floor in the AA, and had great compulsories there. I think she had lost a ton of weight for the trials and looked great there, especially once Mar was out she didnt really have much competition for the last spot. I will say at Seoul she was underscored on all of her optional routines. Especially compared to the East Germans who sucked royally

      The overscoring Marlow got in 88 was a total fix. I was so glad the real judges scored her fairly.... I wouldn't say McCool didn't deserve her spot but they did overscore her to make sure she made the team and paid no attention to her beam connections not getting credit at the test event

      Kelly Warren Kim deserved to be at the Olympics. When I watched this whole incident unfold, it made me sick. No one should have denied her a spot at the Olympics and she had the scores to prove it. At the end of the day, those people that denied her spot and gave it to Bruce now have to live with themselves. The decision was nothing more than politics and they had every intention of taking Bruce no matter how well Kim had performed. It's very sick. It shouldn't be all about winning medals. If they have no intention of going by the scores than why have trials at all. To this day, I feel sorry for Kim. It's a big deal, especially when you worked your entirely life toward that one shot and certain individuals took it away from her because they had the power to do so. No one should have that kind of power.

She did under-perform in the AA, perhaps because she had to give her AA performance in the team optionals. Anyways, Kim Z has nothing to do with the non-selection of Kim K. It would've been a miracle if more than one or two of Kim K's scores actually counted in the team score. Wendy Bruce's optional vault alone is enough reason to prove she was the better choice.

      That was probably the best result the U.S. could have hoped for at the time considering the way Romania and the Soviets performed in Barcelona. Kim Kelly would have been lucky if 2 of her scores counted in the team final (and any in the compulsories), and the US would have been unlucky as that would have meant two other gymnasts with higher scoring potential would have bombed those events.
