Installing an Amplifier? MOUNT THE FUSE CORRECTLY! - Jeep Build - CarAudioFabrication
Вставка

- When you install a car audio amplifier you MUST add a fuse to the main power lead. The fuse should be as close to the battery as possible. But sometimes it's hard to determine: Where do you mount the fuse holder in the engine compartment? In this video I make my own location by fabricating a fuse holder bracket and mounting it using a stock bolt location!
A special thanks to Rockford Fosgate and Mobile Solutions for providing the gear and tools used in this video.

Car Audio Fabrication - Master Car Audio - Design, Build, Install
Thanks for watching! Next up I need to determine what wiring to use to tap into the factory signal… What wire is best for carefully connecting the factory radio and all of its channels to my new processor? I show you in the next video here: goo.gl/NU7nA3
-Mark
CarAudioFabrication aww man. sry but I just read the top comment and well that's what I'm having trouble doing. I can't seem to find the right speaker wires to tap into in the main cluster behind the factory head unit in my vw? please help or point me in the right direction or well anything. I mean I would kindly take any knowledge over none. thanks again!
Freddy Rivera no.not the same at all.
Freddy Rivera no. Stacked fuses must be in parallel and are only double the smaller fuse rating. In your case 80 amps.
Hi Mark, I would like to know what size ABS sheet you used for this job ( fuse bracket ) Great work.
Another helpful tool, you can usually obtain at harbor freight, is getting a static end open wrench. It acts like a ratchet for those tight fitting area's you can't access with a normal ratchet and socket. It's come in handy for me with custom installs.
wow, your builds make mine look so half-assed
Namishki901 for real i’m gonna put the fuse holder and big 3 on my car tomorrow😂
I like to use Play-doh to check clearances. You can make it into a big ball and even crush it between surfaces then measure it for an exact fit. But the cell phone tip is still a very good one since we all have phones!
+u9Nails nice idea! Looks like it's time to stock some play dough. It comes in handy for copying contours to paper and such too.
Great Idea
I was gonna say I've used chewing gum in a pinch.
was just gonna say this
That’s what I do also! Works great
Love the bracket idea. Personally I would try to mount the fuse bracket just a couple inches towards the right of the battery incase I need to service my battery or even if I need a quick boost in an emergency. It would make getting access to the positive terminal I little easier without having to move my fuse/bracket. Again only if space in the vehicle will allow. Super slick install, Mark. Looking forward to seeing more videos.
I have engine whine, please do a video on ways to eliminate it, from grounding negative on rca to HU to installing rca away from the power cable etc... And what can cause it when it didn't used to happen to begin with!!! Thanks! You've taught me so much!
Have you tried running your RCA away from your power cable?
If you're RCA and your power are closed this will create cross talk.
Also if your ground wires too long
It's usually in the ground somewhere. Try running a new ground wire(s) directly back to the battery and see if it goes away.
LOVE these Rockford Fosgate fuse holders. There are very few others that come close to the quality, versatility and usability of these guys. I wouldn't use anything else in any build of importance.
that plug you mentioned first is actually for the clutch on the manual trans models. there are other ways in... on the passenger side there is a plug that you can go through. you can also access the cabin through the sides of the cowl to the a-pillar. a couple of the access points are "sealed" with expanded foam.
I find the blue Loctite gel good for securing those screws in case vibrations take their toll. Works wonders for me in the marine environment and if service is needed, it won't harm your threads on the ABS. Thanks for your videos!
Dollar store nail polish works great also
S U P E R B tutorial on this part of the AMP fuse holder! Excellent, highly professional and neat design + clean installation. Kudos young man. Many thanks for sharing your skills and recommendations. I will watch your other videos as well ... and give them a thumbs up!
Great looking bracket. I would've preferred a little more room for jumper cable use.
Beautiful work , people don't realize but the power section ( Wire quality , properly fuse , and proper ground) can make a $5000.00 dollar system sound like a factory radio.
Thank you for the idea of the bracket. I cut a part of an old DeWalt drill box for a plate to mount next to my battery. Not as high tec as yours but it was effective. Thanks
I'm totally stealing that idea for my build tomorrow! Thanks!
Nice bracket fabrication. Great job.
Hey mark. I really enjoyed this video. I love your professional grade voice overs but these real time ones were much much more conversational and made it easier to watch. I also liked the extra length of the video.
So I am a jeep owner and I watch a ton of jeep DIY videos. The ABS bracket is freaking awesome. So much cleaner and easier than fooling with metal. I love how you can use the router on it as well.
That bracket was slick. Nice work!
MARK IS A BOSS!!
I like to add some RTV or silicone to the tips of the bolts, to keep them from vibrating loose. It also helps seal the openings.
@CarAudioFabrication I learned a cool trick for checking clearance a while back. You can stick a piece of play dough or putty on top of your item to check and close the hood. If there is no indent then you’re good to go!
OOOO! nice bracket! 👌
+SoundmanCA hopefully it doesn't twist
It doesn't twist on vehicles that don't run :D
👍 for lining up the slots on the screws. Always the perfectionist... or maybe just a little OCD. Either way 👍
So clean and professional.
I love your channel!!!! I’ve learned so much from you. Thank you
I love how all your videos how all your videos act like everybody has all these tools and materials just laying around their garage or can “just go pick up one these” like there’s nothing to it. I’m not hating I think it’s funny. You’re just so casual about it. Seriously though, even if I can’t just run out and pick up a shop press it provokes my thinking. I love it because I’m thinking damn that’s a good idea. Now what can I use as a shop press? Great ideas. It so easy to copy someone else’s work and say that was easy but people don’t think about yeah it was easy for you because you didn’t have to figure out to do it. That’s the truely hard part. Thinking up the idea in the first place. So cudos.
I came across this channel yesterday and subscribed! I've installed plenty of systems but you taught me a lot and I'm going to watch a good amount of your videos and take extra time installing my system now lol. Keep up the good work.
Details details details. This is soooo good for my OCD. Great work fella! Thx for.makong these videos, I'll find Patron, as I'm building car audio I to an arcade machine and I've learned loads from you here!
Great idea with tapping the plastic bracket vs using nuts and bolts!
I didn’t know mark zuckerberg like car audio
He’s the human version of mark zuckerberg
A wet sponge will leave a mark on the hood lining if there is not enough clearance. Cheap and easy.
Now I need to go buy a sponge.
Mark... The best man in car hi fi👍
I really LOVE how this came out! I want to go freshen up my fuse location on my Jeep now. Question, do you feel the under hood temps could cause the abs plastic to sag over time with the weight of the fuse block?
Excellent idea! I’m going to make one for my install except I’m going to try rubberized double sided tape to mount the fuse box. Losing a nut in the engine bay could be bad but losing a bolt inside a fuse box could bridge the fuse and bypass it leaving me with no protection.
Melt in some press nuts. Threads in plastic only last so long and can handle only so many mattings.
Using the white board helps me understand what to do so much better thanks for that
i like to carefully place a piece of tape sticky side up if it sticks to the opposite material you need more clearance. and tale is thin enough to get very exact.
Wow. Talk about ingenuity and perfection
It's gonna twist XD sorry couldn't resist. Only some will get that reference. Looks good, keep up the good work.
Rafas mom gets it
This video gives me lots of ideas, thank you. I never knew you could buy ABS sheets!
for a clearance gauge, you can loose roll some aluminum foil and place it in the area you need to check, close, and open and see if it is crushed at all.
Save your cell phone brother and place some clay on top of your fuse block and lower the hood. If there's a clearance issue, the clay will show it. Great videos. I've watched several today and have subscribed. I'm turning others on to your channel too. Thanks for the easy to understand explanations and the entertainment as well.
Dude. I smashed that like button !
Just did this in my car. Took a 3/8" piece of ABS and used a heat gun to get a 45 angle on one side to match up with the stock bolt mount.
Man, I have a 2012 civic si coupe, and it’s been difficult to find a spot to make a bracket, some of these engine bays are so cluttered. For now I just used industrial strength Velcro strip and put the fuse holder on top of the fuse box cover. But I’m going to figure something out for a bracket. Good videos, some have helped me out quite a bit as a novice car audio diyer
I said i wasn't going to watch this long ass video but you made everything look so interesting lol
i also use play doo, its great when installing hood pins for remote starts and alarms
I had to pay someone to install my subwoofer + new speakers setup in my car, and he mounted (with a normal phillips screw) the amp fuse directly on top of the damn fusebox. And he's an experienced guy who does car audio for a living. Like wtf man...
Love your video man! Best car audio videos ever!
Magical! True artist.
I riveted an accessory block directly to the underside of the hood above the battery. Waiting to see if hood flutter will eventually have an adverse effect on it, it’s been good so far.
Really nice work! I'm really enjoying all your videos. Cheers
You can used Brass thread inserts that can be pressed into ABS with a soldering iron.
I often use the inserts on 3d printed parts.
Are you worried at all about the ABS breaking? I mean with the weight of the 1/0 ( I presume from what it looks like in the video) and the fact that it is a Jeep. Even if the suspension and remains stock or it is never off-roaded they don't have the smoothest ride.
I used neodymium magnets to hold my old fuses under my hood it worked perfectly no holes no cutting just stick and good to go I now have abs holding my fuses in my new car due to Space issues
ill be using the same type but to hold a dashboard Bezel.
it's a good idea to secure high power wires properly.
In a car crash it can still become loose and touch the body and ignite fuel that may be spraying about.
Always plan ahead
Another good idea to check for clearence under the hood is to put a bit of soft clay on top of the piece. Shut the hood and reopen. then you can see if it came into contact with the hood. (edit: I wrote this before noticing that others said the same thing. Goes to show that it is a great idea)
Nice job. I use rivnuts in my installations. They hold well. Ty for the info.
One tip about the mounting screws in the plastic, just use a little thread lock and the screws will never come unloose.
Beautiful work, but aren't you concerned that vibration will cause the fuse mount to eventually tip? Maybe, putting a zip tie around it that is connected to the large bundle of wire above it.
I used a small yet powerful magnet 🧲 secured to the bottom of the fuse holder. then I mounted it to a nice spot in the engine bay. I secured the power wire with zip ties on both side so there is no possibility of movement.
it’s very secure and I didn’t modify my FJ Cruiser in any way.
On my '08 Ram 1500, the spot where the clutch would have gone through the firewall was perfect for going into the cab.
Very impressive & original quality work 🙌🏻
Great video as always mark
thank you man - my fuse is just sitting my the battery naked... great idea to fix that.
This guy does the most butt everything he does is bad ass. Lol, he makes everything perfect. That’s it that’s all.
If there is a fault and the current goes high the "fuse" will break and current will cease to flow. The fuse is rated for the wire. You may mount your fuse anywhere between the battery positive and the amp, because your vehicle is negative earth.
Unless I am missing something?
Imagine there is a spike in the current flowing through the wire for whatever reason. All of the wire behind the fuse, after the fuse blows, will be protected from that current. All of the wire leading up to the fuse, however, will have that high amperage forced through it. Whenever you force too much amperage through a wire it will heat up tremendously, causing it to melt or potentially start a fire. That's why you want to minimize the length of the "unprotected" wire leading up to the fuse, to minimize the potential damage caused by a surge.
Also, if your fuse is next to your amp in your trunk, the power wire could short somewhere between your battery terminal and the fuse. Since there is no fuse to shutoff the current to the shorted wire, it would very likely lead to a fire.
after the fuse has blown there will be NO MORE CURRENT. CURRENT ONLY FLOWS IN A CLOSED CIRCUIT. The fuse will blow before the wire can heat up enough to melt the insulation. That is the purpose of a fuse. Your wire should not heat up more than this because it is rated to carry the maximum current for the device, then your fuse is rated to protect the wire from heating up to the point of self destruction. The wire cannot short to the body because it is insulated. It is insulated because the fuse protects the wire in the circuit.
If you lick the positive wire while you are in contact with earth you will be closing an otherwise open circuit. Look it up and stay off me.
the only thing you're missing is that a general rule when installing something new electrical in you car that doesn't have a fuse, you always mount the fuse as near to the battery as possible.
And by the way I understand what you're saying and i agree, but still you shouldnt risk it, say that the wire is cut open by something an touches metal behind the fuse, the fuse wont blow, and bad things happen.
If you're dumb enough to install it anywhere like your trunk That's roughly a good 8 feet of live wire if contacted. Just imagine if it was punctured by accident...
Or put a fuse right in front of the battery and have the whole wire go dead and only live within a few inches of the battery.
Thanks for sharing all your useful tips..craftsmanship at its finest !!..love your vids brutha!!!..
i'm pretty sure that convenient hole in the firewall next the the brake master cylinder is for your clutch.
great fabrication work
A test for me, you sound like Saablyke, is your accent from North Carolina? I`m dutch.
You can put up a piece of rolled masking tape on top and if it sticks to the hood then it's touching
until your phone falls down into the engine bay when you close the hood, n you have to take the skid plate off the underside, then clean all the oil off it.. cuz speaking for myself.. that area isn't usually washed properly lol. but good video. I usually use stainless steel on my brackets tho.. I have an addiction to metal
Really good video 👍🏻 can I just say if you tap your mount from the underneath as in this video be carful with other materials because you will have reversed thread when trying to screw your bolt in from the top
David K yes agreed but if you run a normal thread tap from the underneath and then try to put a bolt in from the top it won't go in because the tread is now 180 degrees reversed
Incorrect! Visualize this one, twirl your finger in an up motion and picture how it is coming from the top. clockwise from both side goes in towards the center.
Instead of a phone, you could also take a piece of CCF or OCF and place it on top of the fuse holder, close the hood, open back up and look for any contact indentations. :)
Hey Mark, like button smashed! You have a new fan.. Great video!
I think you doing great it make it lot easy. keep up the good work
Seems like a good candidate for 3d printing. You could model the bracket in fusion 360 and print it out using PETG or ABS while you're running the wiring to the back of the vehicle.
Both would melt in the engine compartment
@@CarAudioFabrication Your engine compartment is hotter than 200C?
Did anyone catch that? He tightened the fasteners so all the heads faced the same way. You’re just as weird as me man.
Great video
In my opinion, not the greatest place for the fuse. Sure, it's only one bolt, but it's one more thing you'd have to remove to replace the battery. Not a huge inconvenience, but still an inconvenience.
@@deanwlkr Since we are replacing our battery so frequently, what a hassle to have to remove that one extra bolt 🤣
Looks good, BUT! I'd of moved the fuse a bit toward the front of the car. If the car isn't your own, and it needs a jump, the owner might have no clue what the big scary looking black box is.
At 850, just use some gum (chewed) or playdough on the edge you feel would maybe touch the hood.
Lobe this video, and I built one the same for my Jeep JKU. Only thing is im not sure I can jump start the Jeep now since the block sits so close to the positive terminal. Any thoughts?
Thank you for another great video, anyway you can give us a video on making more ideas for cardboard use as templates, and also maybe some tips on doing a wooden roof for a car/truck or suv I can't find anything good on doing this for my new build and wanna install wood on my roof to help the flex etc.
WOW!! i never knew about that. Thanks Mark. that was a great vid. i may just do that for some of my installation.
Great channel! I've learned so much from your videos for my current head unit and amp install. From soundproofing to ferrules and oh let's not forget the fabulous Tesa tape! I even made a custom fuse bracket using ABS plastic for my amp and also for a big 3 upgrade fuse holder. What are your thoughts on circuit breakers vs fuses? For my amp I'm using an ANL fuse but I just ordered a 100a breaker for the big 3 alternator wire to try it out.
Hey forget putting your phone in the bay to see the clearance... use some blutack, just roll up a stick and put it on top of what your measuring.
It will squash down to the clearance you have.
Oh and are they standard issue installer shoes? :D
I do my brackets the same way. But, I use all steel. That plastic is gonna heat up and the screws are gonna get loose. But I understand not everybody is a metal fabricator.
how dare you.
Well, you know. LOL
Nothing wrong with doing it this way. You need to understand the melting temp of ABS and how hot it gets in the area you place it. I've used ABS, type I pvc and HDPE under the hood and haven't had any issues.
Another trick for checking clearance between installed objects and the hood for example is a ball of modeling clay.. Just roll up a small ball sit it ontop of whatever you're checking clearance on and close the hood... when you open the hood you now know what your clearance is.... Word of warning tho... the older and dirtier it gets it will pickup automotive oil and grease and may start leaving ugly spots.. thats easily solved with a layer of either electrical tape or masking tape
Hi. looking for an explanation for how to hook up the RCA leads from the deck to the amp. What rca leads go where...etc. ?
Or you could put tooth paste on the fuse holder to see if it hit the hood. Also why are you putting this fuse holder over the + battery terminal that's one of the most touched piece of a car jumping, other amp work, radios, winch, etc... wouldn't you want to put it at least a little bit out of the way?
+Jacob Falk good idea with the toothpaste. There is still plenty of access to the positive for jumper cables. Just looks closer than it is in the video
Should have know that you already thought of that haha, thanks!
When the battery needs replacing is the new bracket in the way of removal?
IDK that fuse block looks like it's got some sharp edges on it...maybe needs some attention from the router as well.
a cool idea for the clearence thing use a berry
So now your battery is trapped under the fuse block. Genius 🤣
I had no problem swapping the battery when it was needed. And even if I did, it's one extra nut. Heavens me!
Additionally you can purchase nylon machine screws that self lock and will not conduct anything if your bracket is pushed onto the battery in an accident.
how can amp burn without burning battery line fuse (60amp) and amp fuses (30amps x 2 fuses). i thought fuses would burn before the amp does! but my amp burnt :(
Bro how do you open the cover? It’s so hard to open I don’t wanna break it
why still got haters for this kind of video? the fuse look nice.
nice work
Eres muy bueno amigo ! Felicidades .!!
YES!!!! JEEP UPDATE!!!
