Yesssss!!! An hour long! I'm about to grab my popcorn!🤓
It’s 11:10pm I’m laying on my couch 22 minutes in watching a movie on Netflix. My phone lights up with a UA-cam notification. I click on it and I see a one hour long video by Peter. I paused Netflix because I have to see what I’m going to learn from Peter tonight.
And what did you learn? 😀
A lot of reminder’s as to what I already learned from you. But may have been placed in storage bin that I kind of forgot about. Happens when you don’t exercise that everyday. Muscle memory for the brain! I like the speech that is given for the last 10-15 minutes of the video. Also getting little bits of more in-depth information on phase and the cause & effects if its not correct. The more I watch you go over the measurements the better I understand what I am looking at. what i should expect and what adjustments will more then likely have to be made.
It’s a constant review, the more I watch and read the more little details I will pick up that I may not have before. Sometimes you better explain things in your videos that you might have given a briefing on before.

I remember a few episodes ago you said you were going to invest in a nail gun to save time and I see you did, cool and good for you Peter 🙂. Fabrication is a beast I mean it just takes so much planning and gaining in experience by watching videos and then just trying your hand at. I remember back in the day screwing amps and distribution blocks to a board and hiding wires was an accomplishment lol but nowadays it is art and creativity. I wish I could go to the mobile solution school just to learn more theory especially about tuning, how stereos connect in modern cars and frequency adjustments to dsp regarding hertz and stuff. What a hobby I used to just want good music now I really want to hear it

sealed off a trunk on my 68 Chevy nova for an IB 15" setup..
Day 1: Started up with a fresh board of plywood
day 42; icecream sticks with a glue gun in my self created 4d puzzle of doom.
day 50: It would have been faster to seal the holes from the inside out instead of outside in..
day 1.2 : Yay, plywood, silicone.
day 2.2 ; Awesome sound :)

Just watched this for the second time and I love how you did this setup. This is exactly what I want for my series 3xj6. My carpet isn't as thick so I'll have to do a lot of planning on what space is available so I can decide on the driver but getting tips from all your vids im confident I'll get it worked out.

Well, that explains why it always sounds better with the windows open on a nice sunny day.
The gain achieved from simply opening windows is a good example of the difficulties installers face getting good, reliable sound in a vehicle.
And yes I watched the entire video as I always do with Peter's videos.

I'm at the part of the video and I'm going to guess around 10 liters. I recently built footwell enclosures similar size for Anarchy midbass drivers. I used the puzzle technique I learned from you. I love your attention to detail.
What kind of car did you make the kicks for?

Actually this video make me think about my own, I have a truck single cab , have a lot of space behind the seats but was thinking to set the subwoofer in the front at passenger side, to leave the back space empty for tools. Actually my subwoofer is a Ultimo titanium SC 104, that as per manufacture needs a minimum of 13 liters up to 30, Thanks Peter, The question is still I need to have a sub behind the seats?
Cruz Morales location vs cabin size, that’s what dictates! Unfortunately i haven’t worked on many pick up style cabins, they are not popular in UK.
Super helpful video. Sub'd for fantastic information. I am doing a Focal 10" up front and am wondering about that bottom octave. Will have to consider options.
Peter, if you weight the enclosure before and after filling with water you will have the exact volume easily…just think of that after look again at your video. Maybe it will help 😉

Hi! I'm trying to decide the optimal location for a front subwoofer. Would you recommend placing it in the passenger footwell or the glovebox area?
You're not kidding about the effects of contorting yourself into footwells, just running cable or doing any work under a dash for a few minutes can be a terrible experience.
Morel Ultimo Titanium 102/104 have 600W RMS and Frequency response of 10-900Hz and similar sensitivity of 85dB only con is that it's almost 1.5" longer than 10 WM. Morel paired with Helix M One X (having Freq. res. of 10-250Hz) would have been able to produce the low end bass (20-25Hz) as the rear sub?
I looked at the specs of some subwoofers where it was mentioned ported sub box makes lower freqs. than sealed boxes but need more vol. Do you think a ported box in the front would make a difference?
The Focal TBM can go to 50khz according to it's spec sheet, is that even noticeable coz usually tweeters are up to 20khz or 25Khz?
Love your work on this beamer, would have loved to see some glimpses of your tuning session. 28:27 I would have added a layer of chopped fiberglass from behind the plywood and in front also before applying Resin and make a sandwich between 2 plywood layer. This way the fiberglass layer is also a part of the plywood and is not just held by the resin alone.
Was the front sub bolted to any area of the floor or firewall? I’m asking because if the enclosure can be mounted solidly it will give more solid impacts of bass. I bolted a fiberglass sub enclosure using auto sub box carpet I soaked with resin. I braced the inside with 4 3/4” mdf stands about 3” wide from the inside from deck to bottom. I made to hold 4 12” JL 12W3 subs into the spare tire wheel well into the trunk of a 93 Acura Integra gs-r with 500 watts rms by 2 Precision Power PC21400 amps. Had to run a custom wound 300 amp alternator.
I watched all of it my friend i love it and i learnt how to fabricate for ftont sup ina a way but i have other thoughts of location in play lol idc about anything in the vehicle really lol i plan on making everyything sub boxes xD but i just right now i have a 03 lancer its not big i do have 9 rockford subs to go in tho lol XD. I have four in place of the back seat with a peavy 12inch cab i opened/gutted then made into a ported box 4 4 10 inch p3s :)

Group delay
As above, group delay is one of the reasons. Also, ported enclosures needs more volume and most cars don’t have that luxury.

In doors where everything rattles? Quite a tough job! These cars don’t even have door location for larger drivers, just 4” mids. You’d need to build door enclosures like i did in my Honda. 💪🔊🔊

Great vdo as always, just a quick qns - any specific reasons for not choosing the usual wood process to fabricate the front sub box as a whole unit. Was it because of tight space and contours.
Mr. R.S indeed, in those cases thinner FG mould can give you a bit more volume.
I usually test my fiberglass density by standing on it. If it holds up and doesn't creak with my 230lbs (100ish Kg?) it's probably safe.

Could you please let me know the dimensions of your 5 1/4 sub boxes underneath your driver and passenger seats that are ported? Also the size of the ports? I have some MB Quart Reference 5 1/4” I was thinking of putting under the seats after seeing your cool install, instead of installing mid bass speakers in the doors. If you could give me a rough idea, that would be awesome, especially the port size, as I can look up the volume size Vas or Q for a box for the speakers. I really envy your installs dude. Hi Peter, another great video! Question for you: I've done a similar approach for my car, but uncertain as to the best strategy for time alignment between the front midbass speakers, front sub, and rear sub. Do you feel that the Helix software (I have a Helix Ultra DSP) does good job with automatic time alignment? Or do you think I'd be better off just measuring distances from each of the speakers to the driver's headrest?
I have my well practiced method, that has worked for years, so I haven’t used Helix’s feature yet. I may try it for comparison one day. 😃

if you removed all the air out of the enclosure and filled it with sulfur hexafluoride would the driver play deeper bass. the question seems silly but i dont really know how the speaker works scientifically

Hi Peter, how long does it take for you from start to finish to build a fiberglass enclosure for a sub in passanger feet location? I am thinking to build one, since i can't block my trunk and have only front speakers, don't think will add rear fill soon enough. I would like to know what i'm getting into. Of course i will add some extra time margin being the first time i'll do this

A front sub box is usually 30-40hours work, so it’s very labour intensive, but you can certainly do it in stages.

How many watts did you decide to give the 10WM? In an ideal world would you have used a larger enclosure? I have a 10wm in 0.55 cu. ft. of my spare tire well, fiberglassed in.
We run it upfront, so it can never play as low as from a trunk, so it needs a rear sub for the low lows.
What it does upfront when it comes to punch and playful upperbass is a different story and it’s really not about how much power you have behind it. Give it as much clean power AND stable power supply in the car and it’s all good. Worry rather about how it’s tuned and integrated to the rest of the system.
@@pssound9749gorgeous work peter with the focal utopia m bmw build. did you ever hear about the focal fse 20 flax evo 8 inch shallow sub?. I think that would be a interesting install/project for you in the future, for upfront bass. I think they would do great in a front false floor build, plus you would be able to put them on both sides of the car, right front, left front sides.

thanks for another great video peter! i'm hoping you can shed some light on an idea i have. in my jeep grand cherokee there are significant spaces under both front seats. the driver's side is empty and currently houses my dsp. the passenger side has the battery. i was considering putting a small sub, 8 or 10, under at least the driver's seat. initial thoughts?
brett leasure any sub is better than no sub, but you can get better low-end response from a single if it’s on passenger side.
@@pssound9749 thanks for the reply. i should let you know that these would be more like supplemental midbass/subs where i'd likely still have a 15 or something in the rear. i built kicks with 10's in them, but they're starving for air, etc. they imaged well, but they struggled to get me anything in the 60-100 hz range. i was hoping that relocating the battery would be alot easier than cutting a bunch of metal in my kick panel areas.
@@pssound9749 I do believe i heard you say that you would have liked to have the sub facing towards the fire wall ?
If true , In your experience or knowledge do you feel it gives a better response to have it facing the fire wall. Also do you feel a center console sub that’s placed forward slightly underneath the dash would benefit more rather then on the passenger side fire wall area ? Like in the position where you would usually find the shifter but say maybe 6-8” more forward. I ask because I have a Chevy Silverado and it has lots of room in that area. I’ve seen some online put a 10” in that spot with a .6cf sealed box. Don’t know if the work would be be worth it. Oh the sub would be down firing at the floor.
If you had installed the true IB midbass 8" Utopia's first, would you still have done this front sub?
Yes. This car is very long and the sub from the back doesn’t have a great transfer function for upper bass, what the front sub does with ease.
Are the factory 6.5 door speakers in a Honda Odyssey considered mid-range speakers?
I guess a 6.5” would be called midbass.
what type of plywood do you use? is it important?
It doesn’t, it just gives structure. We use birch ply.
thank you! started my build today, following this guide. When you do the first layer of fiberglass cloth in the vehicle, is there any trick to applying the resin upside down onto the inverted piece? I was planning to use paintbrushes but I’m not sure that would work
@@chef_yt that’s always the shit part. It helps if you wet the chopped matter with resin a bit in advance, then stick it up or if you can, just build it from wood on the top.
there’s not a great way for me to build it with wood on the top, wouldn’t be any easier from what I can tell. I’ll try using a strong adhesive tape for masking, supergluing that section of the cloth to the masking tape, and just ripping the tape out with the cloth when it comes out, and sanding off the tape. Probably decreases the integrity of the mat, but I’ll do other layers anyway. Thank you for the help, and great video!
change in plans. masked with blue painter’s tape and carpet protector (cling wrap) and a healthy serving of johnson’s wax. I removed the glove box so I’m thinking I’ll affix coat hangers in the glove box area, bend them down into the fiberglass area, and have the coat hangers holding up a piece of wood shim stock on the front/top of the box to hold up the cloth. I give it a low probability of working, but worst case I’ll cut out any droopy bits and either glass those couple inches with a loose clearance, or put wood there. have you ever had an insufficient mask/insufficient release agent and had to remove a fiberglass part stuck to the frame?

@Pssound would a 3d scanner, with a 3d printer work for a box, in a location such as this one?
You can do crazy things with today’s technology, so i’m sure it’s possible, but i’m not sure it’s worth it. Printing a rigid enclosure for a 10” sub is quite a challenge! 🤘🔊
@@pssound9749 it would be great for making the basic shape so you could fiberglass it outside of the car. Another benefit is that the whole deal can be shared as 3d file to other builders with same car and done again.

I am asking myself; would a multiple capable 6,5 or 8 inch was used, could that be a solution instead of a single woofer?
Large drivers always play lower frequency range more effortlessly with less distortion than multiple small drivers.
@@pssound9749 I agree Pete, but considering the bandwidth were the biggest problems were, between 50-80 ish was the reason. Right bandwidth of good smaller drivers. But if you want bigger lower output in front it’s logical.
Umıt Bozkır it was also about location related problems with the midbass. If the 8WM was in different location and had no issue in 60-90Hz range, we wouldn’t need a front sub.
Sometimes you need luck with cars and what locations you get.
@@pssound9749 I am going to try with an Aliante 12, and try with multiple 6,5 inches. I have also the same issue with my BMW f11 estate. Depth isn’t an issue with the Aliante, but the diameter of an Aliante 12 is quite large.
Does the water not affect the deadning adhesive?
No. Then what would happen to deadening in a door?

Putting the woofer in the doors is the preferred place for optimal output & accuracy and ease of installation in order to have maximum High Fidelity and frequency alignment including sound staging.. .

There are many factors that talk against your view. The doors are uncontrolled and vibrating environments. Also the difference in the distance makes issues compared to kick panels for example. If you do SQ builds, you have a lot to learn. It’s all physics.

Reality is you would probably sell that sub with car as its probably not going to fit in your next one unless you get exact same car I seriously doubt your going to recoup your money on it though. I would imagine most who go to this expense will hold onto vehicle for a very long time .

JL has great options. W3 is excellent for SQ too, but if you need something slim, they have many options for that too.
If you have space, then the Helix Q10W is a real jam and is cheap for what it is.
