- Old Russian Ballad
"Stenka Razin" has the distinction of being the first Russian dramatic silent film production - a tribute to the determination of its producer, Aleksandr Drankov. When his first seventeen actualities failed to win serious attention in early 1908, he answered the widespread call for Russian-made films with Stenka Razin. This account of the popular brigand leader who dallied with a captured Persian princess was adapted from a traditional ballad "From the Island to the Deep Stream" and Drankov commissioned original music to accompany his film from no less than Ippolitov-lvanov, then head of the Moscow Conservatoire. Energetic promotion ensured the film's commercial success and launched Drankov's career as a producer.
The Ballad of Stenka Razin
From beyond the wooded island
To the river wide and free
Proudly sailed the arrow-breasted
Ships of Cossack yeomanry.
On the first is Stenka Razin
With his princess by his side
Drunken holds in marriage revels
With his beauteous young bride
From behind there comes a murmur
"He has left his sword to woo;
One short night and Stenka Razin
Has become a woman, too."
Stenka Razin hears the murmur
Of his discontented band
And his lovely Persian princess
He has circled with his hand.
His dark brows are drawn together
As the waves of anger rise;
And the blood comes rushing swiftly
To his piercing jet black eyes
"I will give you all you ask for
Head and heart and life and hand."
And his voice rolls out like thunder
Out across the distant land.
Volga, Volga, Mother Volga
Wide and deep beneath the sun,
You have never seen such a present
From the Cossacks of the Don.
So that peace may reign forever
In this band so free and brave
Volga, Volga, Mother Volga
Make this lovely girl a grave.
Now, with one swift mighty motion
He has raised his bride on high
And has cast her where the waters
Of the Volga roll and sigh.
"Dance, you fools, and let's be merry
What is this that's in your eyes?
Let us thunder out a chanty
To the place where beauty lies."
From beyond the wooded island
To the river wide and free
Proudly sailed the arrow-breasted
Ships of Cossack yeomanry.
1630 -- June 16 [O.S. June 6] 1671) was a Cossack leader who led a major uprising against the nobility and Tsar's bureaucracy in South Russia. In 1671 he and his brother Frol Razin were captured at Kaganlyk, his last fortress, and carried to Moscow, where, after tortures, Stepan was quartered alive in the Bolotnaya Square. However, the rebellion did not end with Razin's death. The rebels in Astrakhan held out until November 26, 1671, when Prince Ivan Miloslavsky restored government control.
Thanks for posting this. My father was fluent in 20 or 30 languages (he could translate in at least 52), but Russian was one of his first (his parents were immigrants from Eastern Europe and both spoke Russian). My dad sang this and many other Russian songs with a beautiful baritone voice and with deep emotion. He knew many stanzas by heart. So I grew up hearing the great music of Russia (also flamenco, Portuguese, Yiddish, Hebrew, etc.). I've always believed music can bring people together regardless of nationality, religion, whatever.
Damn your dad was a gigachad

💗Pozdrav zo Slovenska. 👋
I'm Scots and this has always stirred my heart. I first heard it in concert in London by the Omsk Ensemble. It moved my mother to tears. I met a Cossack woman in Barcelona and I sang it to her. She couldn't believe it!
In Russian ?
I am Romanian and I am convinced that the old celts were akin to our Dacian ancestors.
I'm calling bullshit on your story! Fuck off
What is : Cossacks woman ? They never were a nation.
@@Peter1Europe , why not? Kazachka ( cossack girl ) in use in Russian or Ukrainian language, if she born in Rostov, Kuban, Astrakhan, Stavropol, Voronezh, Volgograd ( Stalingrad ) , Ural and Baikal lake regions of Russia and Zaporozhie, Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and some others regions of Ukraine she can be called kazachka ( cossack girl) . Nationality is secondary.
I was born in Kirkenes, Norway, and this was the song my father was singing to me when I was a baby.
Red Army choir is wonderful. This is a joy for would be bass singers. The power and depth of that voice is awesome.
Jedna z najpiekniejszych rosyjskich piesni❤ ! Wspaniale wykonanie - silny baryton w akompaniamecie fantastycznego choru 🥰 Pozdrawiam z Montrealu
Najpiękniejsza pieśń jaką słyszałem! To jest Mateczka Rosija w czystej postaci. Bardzo dziękuję za tą pieśń!

Thank you! I grew up with the Soviet Army Chorus and Band. My father had the records. He's been gone for 10 years now, and when I hear this I think of him. Thank you.
me too
Me also.
And me. My mother loved their singing.
My father used to sing this to me when I was little. So many memories! Thank you!
Tom Springfield learnt this melody when in the British Army doing National Service.
He later adapted it for The Seekers hit 'The Carnival is Over'
This is a real favourite of mine, especially when Tom Springfield adapted the tune so cleverly for The Carnival is Over, sung by the Seekers, even this brought tears to my eyes, I can get quite emotional with some music
Marie 💝 překrásná píseň ,zpívám si ji celý život.
Had Tom Springfield not used this tune for "The Carnival is Over," millions of people around the world would likely have been unaware of the tune and its beauty. Both Springfield and lead singer of The Seekers, Judith Durham, passed away within 9 days of each other in 2022. ua-cam.com/video/gtSAYCucu5E/v-deo.html
Nádhera!!! Úžasná melodie a famózní provedení.
I first heard this classic song some thirty years ago but did not know the story behind it until a much older ex- soldier told me it ... He had learned it from Russian soldier who he met in Germany in 1945 and somehow stayed in touch with touch with for long after ... It is still the finest example of musical expertise, love of country and emotion that I have ever heard ... Only a true Russian patriot could sing it like this ... It stands as a memorial to all the sufferings and sacrifices of all of those superb Russian people's who have faced might and tyranny with the undying love of country. ... with special remembrance of Lydia Litviak and all the heroes of Prokarovka
Krasna ruska balada bez přikrašlovani. To je ruska povaha.
The tune was used in an okd Twilight Zone episode ("Mr. Denton On Doomsday"), and that's how I found my way here. The episode was set in the old American west and the instrumental fit the setting well. Had not expected it to be a Russian folk tune. Great music.
Thanks for that info. I'm going to have to dig out that episode now!
Wonderful clip and singing. Thank you for posting.

Nádherná píseň !!
Nádherná a bolestná pieseň!Anika.
Kakav glas...volim ovu staru baladu
Last song my great-grandma sung to me... I miss you
This version is simply the best, I believe.

Yes, yes, the best version. What a pity most of this choir died in a tragic air accident. RIP.
Very very wonderful sons. Thank you from Morocco.
Song.
Niečo nádherné a grandiozne
Velký hlas a přesně vedený sbor... Dík za nahrávku. Zdravím z Rakovnicka. ✋
Beautiful song thank you from Canada!

Thank you for posting this, my father spoke of Stenka Razin when I was small. It's in my DNA.

Wunderbar old Song. Danke sehr!

SNAZNO!!!

@@marietjiegolden4160 well i can try to translate the lyrics,
first: the official dutch version'
Waar al meer dan duizend jaren
in de zee een heuvel stond
rustig in de woeste baren
daar is mijn geboortegrond
Klederdracht raakt in verval
Maar het geldt nog als voorhenen
Urk dat is een soetendal
Wie er is die blijft er al
then the version sung in the local dialect:
Waor al maar dan duzed jaoren
In de zie een uvel stot
Rustig in de woeste baoren
Daor is meen gebeurtegroend.
Opgewekt is ur ut leven
De bewoeners zo gastvrij
Warm van arte in gul in 't gieven
Neuver in de visserije
Maar nou legt ut tussen dikken
't IJsselmeer an d' iene kaant
In daor waor de zie mos wikken
't Wijd in vruchtbaor polderlaand
Ouwe zieden binnen verdwienen
Kliederdracht raakt in verval
Maar ut geldt nog as vor-ienen
Urk dat is een soetendal
Wie er is die blift er al
google translates it actually pretty wel so in english:
Where for more than a thousand years
there was a hill in the sea
quietly in the fierce waves
there is my homeland
Life is cheerful
The residents so hospitable
Warm in heart and generous in giving
Busy in fishing
But now it lies between dikes
't IJsselmeer on one side
And where the sea had to give way
The wide and fertile polder landscape
Old mores have disappeared
National costumes fall into disrepair
But it still counts as forehands
Urk that is a valley of sweets
Who is there already remains

Thanks for this fine posting, both film and music. As for Stenka himself, he could have just dumped the bird on the river bank, but preferred to show off to his hairy mates. Even if this story has been questioned, the real Stenka was also a rather nasty piece of work, posing as an egalitarian liberator while plundering and killing. He ended up being chopped in pieces by the executioner in Moscow.
Man Stenka was an outlaw similar to those in American Old West but some 200 years before
He's been romanticised as something of a Robin Hood character, except where Robin Hood supposedly stole from the rich and gave to the poor, Stenka stole from the rich and kept for himself. Mythology can be a powerful thing.
@@Scunthorpesfinest Stenka didn't killed and robbed boyars, but many poor villagers also. He became so brutal that in the end Cossacks captured him and delivered to Tsar's authorities
