My favourite store used to be "Dark They Were And Golden Eyed" in Soho London it was 100% fantasy/science fiction and a major comic book store...its been closed now for nearly 30yrs but by God when it was open it had everything and quite often some of its customers were mind-blowing...
There`s a huge connection between the store and another of my fave bookstores "Forbidden Planet" as the founder Nick Landau was often seen inside,he went on the found "Forbidden Planet " and was a huge influence in making "2000AD" a success as editor..

I will unfortunately agree with this. I've been an above average reader for decades, but not so much anymore. I buy so many books and with a deteriorating attention span I find myself reading less and less. I hate it honestly.

If you love this place, then I invite you to check out Powell's Books in Portland, OR if you're ever in the neighborhood. It fills an entire city block and has it's own parking. Three stories, rare book archive on the top floor. It's...life changing if you love books as much as me. lol. And still independently owned, too. it's not part of any of the big box publisher-run outlets like B&N.

IDK man I still prefer the sci fi bookstore in Gothenburg, Sweden. It has a coffee shop inside that bakes pastries based on books, films, TV shows and games where you can sit and read or play games with a 5 stories high ceiling with a fantasy banner on it and the coffee shop is named after Sirius from Harry Potter. It has a dragon painted on the wall to the basement. It has an elevator that looks like the TARDIS and when you ride it it sounds like the TARDIS taking off and landing. It has a life size xenomorph. It has everything a geek could ever want from fantasy door mats to kids first Halloween monster book. There's comic books and manga and everything else. Half a million books and a lot of rooms sounds cool and all but I'll stick with mine.

When I lived in Austin in the late 90s my favorite place was Book People -- four stories of books and magazines -- thousands and thousands of titles! And I could literally make an entire day out of being there just exploring and doing a little sample reading and have a pastry and a coffee in the little nooks and crannies ... Man, I miss those days.

Quite envious of this! I can't remember the last time I've seen something like this here in the UK. most we have are the Waterstones chains (which are great, but they are a chain, and lack some soul.) You sometimes find a wonderful used book shop, but given space is a premium on this small island they are tiny and you often worry about a book avalanche, though I must any I do love those gems, it would be amazing to have one like this somewhere near me!

Know it's a bit of a stretch but if you're ever in Jacksonville Florida look up Chamblins book mine it's a store just like this but they're all mostly second hand. I prefer new copies myself but is still always a treat to walk in, smell it and find a new book/series while surrounded by books.

Good Lord, who were the two people who gave a thumbs down? If you enjoy books, and i imagine that is why someone would subscribe to Daniel's channel, how could you not love the literary beauty he gave us for ten minutes from this store? Here in NYC, in the olden days, we used to have on Fourth Avenue in Manhattan an area called Book Row where there used to be about 48 bookstores. Now, the only remnant, but a really good one, is Strand Bookstore with its 18 miles of books and its famous outdoor dollar carts. But that Book Loft is a real gem.

I went there last fall with my mom - taking my aunt and my kids there in a few weeks. LOVE the Book Loft! We also love the German restaurant (Schmidt's) that isn't too far away, too. Makes a perfect day - books, German food, then more books! :) Means you'll have to come back to OH more often now, right? :) Ha!!! (I'm just outside of Cincinnati, so it's a good short weekend trip.) Side note - bought my Mistborn trilogy there! :) First intro into Brandon Sanderson!

We had a bookstore similar to The Book Loft here in Tucson, but unfortunately it closed about 18 years ago or more. It wasn’t as big as yours, but it had the maze of rooms and wonderful selection, knowledgeable staff and great atmosphere. We don’t have many bookstores left here compared to when I moved here 28 years ago. I get a lot of my books from Amazon because I can no longer drive, but I miss being able to spend the day checking out bookstores and browsing the shelves for that surprise gem.

If you liked the book loft, may I suggest The Book Barn in Connecticut? It has three different locations on the same street, ponds and cats and cute little bridges, good prices and kind people. Amazing bookstore! Wish I had one like that one in my country(middle Europe).
Btw if you ever go to Paris, you HAVE TO go to Shakespeare and Company, that si trully the most beautiful bookstore with the richest history in the world! Dark wood shelves packed with books, old furniture, nice people, a special place for writers/readers(more writers tho where anyone can stop by and just write), an antique book section with possibly the most amazing collection in the world(first edition of The Little Prince with the original hand drawn cover for €15k or Joyce's Ulysses with a personal note to his friend if im not mistaken for €20k are two random examples). Also, since Hemingway is your favorite writer, you would LOVE to get his work there I think and you can get a S@C stamp inside that certifies you bought it there as S@C was his publisher(I was only able to buy 3 books there cuz I was traveling with train around europe with my best friend, but I wish I could get more. They do have an online store, but nothing beats buying it personally)! But I have to admit its a little too touristy, so that is a pretty big downside for some people, but it is still a very genuine book store and people dont just go look random shit there just vuz its famous but they actually go buy stuff like in a nornal store, also taking pictures is prohibited to at least moderate the tourist waves a little.
Book Loft is an amazing local bookstore tho, without too many people to stress you out and pressure you, so as a pure local practical bookstore, I have to say Book Loft seems perfect!

If for some reason you ever find yourself in Berlin, Germany - check out "Dussmann. Das KulturKaufhaus". It's basically a department store full of books (and some DVDs, CDs, sheet music). 5 Storeys with 100,000 books. Now you might think "what am I supposed to buy in a German book store? I don't understand German!" Not to worry, they have an English bookshop with 2 Storeys inside the Department Store.
Of course it's not as many books as in the Book Loft, but it's a beautiful and very impressive place ;)

Wow, a bookstore with lots of Stephen King. Haven't seen that since the last time I went to literally any Barnes and Noble.
    Kidding! That place looks amazing!

The Book Loft was my favorite in the later 70's when I lived and worked in G.V. at Sound Advocate and the Sycamore St. Studio. Blows my mind it still has the same magic over 40 years later.

I live in Columbus and have been to the Book Loft several times, and you are correct this is probably the best book store I have ever been in. It is overwhelming the amount of books in this place.

Assuming it ever becomes safe to travel again, I might just have to visit Columbus,OH! If you ever make it to Portland, OR, you NEED to check out Powell's City of Books. Similar vibe.

Amazing shop. We don't have much close to it in the Toronto area anymore

For a combination of charm, coziness, and spectacular surrounding scenery, I recommend the Macdonald Bookstore in Estes Park, CO. It's a family-owned business that has been in the heart of town on Elkhorn Avenue for over a century.

Love this place. The first time I was there I became lost in the amazing rooms with shelves and shelves of books I wish I owned.

It's the only bookstore that I can't walk out of empty handed.

LOVE that place! When I get down for an ATC Shakespeare play in Schiller Park, I stop in, 3 GREAT coffee places a block or two up either way also. Love German Village

Fair competitor for best book store with Powells. An entire city block in DT Portland, Oregon. The location is the only down side. DT Portland is a nightmare to visit.
