There is a lot more that you can do with the NAF than I originally suspected. I've been watching videos like this off and on for a couple of years, but I didn't pull the trigger on buying a flute. Well, I just did and I can't wait to receive it! I got a pretty cheap instrument, but I hope it is adequate to fool around with.
Clint, you play the G minor in this video. When playing the blues, are some keys better than others?
I think some keys are more *common* than others ... I recently played with a blues band every week for 3 months. We played most songs in Em, Gm, Cm, and Am, with an occasional Dm.
👍
kevin locke does this song called cherished grand mother- its got this crazy note that it begins with then it changes to what I would consider a jazz scale- What? Can show that one note?
can you point me to a video and give me a time index??
I went back to get the time signitiure and I found the entire song is based that note. Really 01 to 530 the whole song. But I can't figure it out.
I have recently purchased an Native Flute in the key of Am. It came with the third hole covered and have been wondering if I should take the leather cover off, so that I can learn other styles. Is it better to learn to play with that hole covered with leather or is it better to just learn to cover it with the finger?
Take the leather off. NAF and Carlos Nakai Tab is all for 6 note fllute.
What key is that flute in this video? An F# ?
That is a G minor flute!
Thank you! I'm planning on ordering a lower toned flute fairly soon, lower than the A that I currently have, and I'm not really sure how low I want to go. I'm 6' 2" with long enough arms so that reach is not a problem. When you have your classes and flute circles, is there a particular key that is more common or that you would recommend to play with the group?
We use A minor flutes in general workshops, because almost everyone can reach the finger holes. However ... I personally think that there is a dramatic difference going down two semitones to a G minor, and one more semitone to an F# minor. If you can easily reach an F# minor (and at 6' 2", that sounds likely), that would be my next step. That is a predominant key in traditional as well as contemporary playing. Two more semitones, down to E minor, is again a different feel, and my next step lower might be E or even D minor, which both (especially the D minor) tend to sound "low and mellow" without being specifically "bass flutes". I hope this helps!
It really helps a lot Clint, Thank you so much!!
Who is the flutemaker of this flute please?
Cherish Grandmother, kevin locke, open circle. It starts with that note. cut and paste Cherish Grandmother into youtube. It will make your hair stand up
