  • I need subscribers guys! Help me out. This video is a step by step video detailing how to repair the most common power divider / inter-axle locking differential failure. It does not require removing the entire rear end from the axle housing you don’t have to drain the fluid or remove axle shafts. I save on average $3500 when comparing to bringing your semi truck to a shop

    Great video! Your a natural.
    My preferred method in the shop to heat bearings and gears is an old fish fryer filled with some oil and temp is easy to control. Have also use a piece of plate steel set the bearing on top and heat from underneath with torch. Infrared temp gun comes in very handy try not to get over 300 deg F. Keep up the good work and God bless you for passing on your knowledge.

    This worked. It was accurate. I watched this video and did it when I realized that the diff lock did not engage and the drive shaft kept spinning. Thanks for great help.

    This is going to save me a bunch. We usually pull them out and they rehearing the whole thing. Always been gun shy. Not sure why it’s broke how much worse can it get. Got one now that runs fine but power divider lock doesn’t work. U can hear the fork move and axle lock works. Once you see it and watch. Easy as pie. Can’t thank you enough.

    Awesome video, I just tore my front differential apart yesterday. I had a pooping upon takeoff and vibration. My truck is a 2016 Peterbilt 579. They confess apart a little different but pretty much the same inside. The yoke has to be removed first and the shift fork is up front and has to shifted around to get the shaft out. Luckily your video helped me realize this was my issue. Parts are ordered and on there way. Spent $1500 to rebuild the whole thing on a D40-155 Spicer. Thanks for the help and making the video.

    This is a great method if you're not dealing with broken gear teeth or other metalic debris in the Differential lube oil. Otherwise you'll need to pull the cover and clean the housing thoroughly. You'll probably want to do a quick oil change after reassembly to catch any missed particles.

    I just had a guy come into my shop with a truck he blew the yoke off of it and fix that himself and then said the rear end was screwed up, I haven’t tied into it yet but I am guessing it’s the spider gears. Thanks for the info very helpful.👍🏼

      Circle B Ranch Just giving you an update on what happened, the owner fixed the front yoke when he broke it. When he brought it to me and I started to tear it apart I found that the rear yoke on the input shaft was broke on an angle (he could drive forward but not reverse) and said it was making all kinds of noise. When I got into it I did a full inspection and found no broken parts it was just the yoke.But this is a case where you have to pull it apart because of the owner said it was making all kinds of noise.

    Can't really agree with the torch thing (hot gear oil would be better in my opinion) but it's been done without incident many a time, at least you're smart to have Rockwell rear ends !!!
    I hate Spicer and Eaton and meritor axles myself
    I like Mack and Rockwell personally !!! Both as a former mechanic and Driver, a couple of long dowel pins to help get that front assembly to slide in helps alot, be careful about silicone blocking the oil holes and passages, to,
    All the best to you and yours Sir.

    A lot of bad information here. As someone that rebuilds these every day for 28 years and counting, doing these power dividers in the truck isn't advised because the big input thrust washer is known to fall down between the input shaft flange and the input helical when trying to install the power divider which is why we build them straight up and down in a diff stand. Failure to catch that is going to be an improper shimming of the power divider and you can ruin it. Next is the input yoke, do yourself a favor and take the nut off before removing the power divider from the front differential and save your wrist, shoulder and elbow. Next is the spider gears, almost every time an Rd20145 power divider is worn so are the diff internal gears (spider gears). Now because the rear wasn't pulled, broke down and inspected you risk blowing up the internal gears in the near future and you risk ruining everything you just installed. Anytime the power divider is replaced it absolutely needs to be re-shimmed too. We don't set the shimming with the o-ring because they rip fairly easy and they should always be replaced part number 5-x-1034 . Do it once and do it right, pull it and have it done properly.

    What does it mean if my inner axle differential is stuck on. The shift cylinder moves back-and-forth when I take the air supply off and push it with a screwdriver but when it’s jacked up both axles have to be up to turn. It’s not an old international, it has air going to the cylinder when I actuate the dash switch. The collar must be stuck. What parts do I need besides the shift cylinder housing that I rounded the nut on trying to get off?

    I had a leak between my front differential and the power divider. I waited to fix it, and blew two wheel seals out in the meantime. When I opened it up, the gear lube was milky. Fixed everything and haven’t had a problem since. I’m wondering if that compromised gear lube allowed that diff to get hot and melt those seals? I’d be curious what yours looks like when you drain it.

    If your gonna cook bearings with a torch at least use a steel plate. Heat the plate up from beneath with a torch,with bearing on to of plate. It will more evenly heat the bearing. All you ever need is 125 degree Celsius or 250f.

    Is that a 40000 lb rated axle set and if so were the others you repaired as well and did they all have a similar failure within the carrier nest. The reason I ask is that there is supposed to be quite a difference in strength between a typical 40 vs 46000 power divider and 40's I am told are a real weak point in the power divider when it comes to being used off road.

    • @HoneyRiverRanch
      @HoneyRiverRanch  3 роки тому +2

      About 1 to 2 ratio I’ve done more 40s because there is more out there but the same shock load will Shatter the 46s too and I’ve done several of the big ones with the same failure

    • @charlesb4267
      @charlesb4267 3 роки тому +2

      @@HoneyRiverRanch Of course the driver claims it wasn't him, it was "the other guy" who drove it previously !. Seriously though, I wonder what the heck they are doing to blow a 46 as I have friends who have driven an awful lot of off road, log hauling and various oilfield slogging through typical deep mud churning or attempting to climb hills they spin out on etc with chains on and never blown a divider in their life. I wonder if they are popping the clutch or engaging the power divider when spinning.

    • @HoneyRiverRanch
      @HoneyRiverRanch  3 роки тому +2

      I think It happens when they break traction on a slick spot on the road then it hooks back up hard I don’t know. Our deal is oil field. There’s this one hill that claims one truck a day. You gotta climb it in second gear with your PDL locked in and you can’t get a run at it cuz there is a sharp turn at the bottom and I think there is a lot of crow hoping loaded on that hill. In my opinion if you chained down the drives so they couldn’t spin at all and forced the drive train around to see where it would fail , it would fail in this spot every time it’s just the weak link. And yes it’s driver error. I’ve ridden with drivers who were spinning wheels and didn’t even know it or feel it. Your first instinct should be to let off the throttle as soon as u feel a spin but u would be surprises how many drivers don’t feel it when they get into a wheel spin

      @@HoneyRiverRanch Is this a gravel road or more of a true off road trail pushed through for access. Many years ago I worked at Schlumberger up here in Alberta one winter although I only had my class 3 at the time for driving a tandem but depending on what type of job were were doing we had tractor trailers etc and we would chain up both drive axles ( 2 sets of triple chains ) and those tractors would have had three or four way lockers as well and with the steepness of the grade they still would spin out and had to be dragged up the hill with a cat. I was in second gear with the body job with one set of triples on one hill and just about powering out, not enough grunt with the old L10 Cummins in a body job. And yet oddly enough we were not blowing out power dividers, I think part of it is guys with experience and knowing when to call it quits and not start digging and hopping as that would kill a driveline. There is so much torque going through the drive shafts and diffs in a low gear pulling hard, the odds don't favor a guy for sure.

    I notice strange lines (almost like search marks) on my rear drive axle super single tires. More lines on driver side tire. The front drive axle tires are perfectly fine. Just wondering whether this could be a differential axle issue? Any thoughts? Suggestions?

      The rear always pulls harder than the front especially the right rear
