You're looking here at one of the most advanced motor cars Mercedes-Benz has ever built. No longer is an S-Class merely about comfort, refinement and performance. This MK7 model also prioritises electrification, digitalisation and connectivity. There's never been a boardroom level luxury saloon quite like it.

Background
The Mercedes S-Class. It's traditionally been the sensible answer to the question every motoring expert likes to dodge - 'what's the best car in the world?'. Other vehicles can be more opulent, faster or better to drive but over the years, no other model has so consistently delivered such a technologically-advanced blend of automotive virtues. Here, we're looking at the seventh generation 'W223'-series model.
No previous S-Class has ever been as complex, advanced or sophisticated as this one. Delivering this design - and it's all-electric sister, the EQS - has required a greater level of investment than any Mercedes has ever attached to a new model. Not just because of the new EV tech but also because there's a completely different engineering and technical philosophy in play here. A bigger step forward than any made with this model line since the S-Class, or 'Sonderklasse', badging was first introduced in the original 'W116'-series model back in 1972. Let's take a look.
Driving Experience
On the move, there's still nothing quite like the serenity and elegance of an S-Class and the cruising experience on offer here remains a particularly special one, even by the opulent standards of the boardroom segment. Exemplary ride quality remains this model's key calling card, even better this time round thanks to the way the AIRMATIC air springs interact with the heavily re-engineered 'MRA' 'Modular Rear Architecture' platform. The super-slippery 0.22Cd drag factor ensures that highway refinement is class-leading too: which is where you can make use of the segment's best developed 'Level 2' autonomous driving tech - Mercedes' Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC' system, which works with 'Active Steering Assist' to basically look after steering, throttle and braking duties for you at cruising speeds. The car's been engineered for 'Level 3' and 'Level 4' tech too - basically driving itself without you - for whenever legislation permits that to happen.
For now though, you might be happy to enjoy driving it yourself, even in town, where this Mercedes eases through urban jams on a different plane to the motoring masses. Beneath the bonnet, all S-Class variants bound for our market feature in-line six cylinder 3.0-litre power, the options beginning with the 286hp S350d diesel rear-driven variant we tried. The same engine features with 330hp mated to 4MATIC AWD in the S400d. Or there's a 435hp petrol powerplant in the S500 4MATIC, which benefits from the brand's current 'EQ Boost' mild hybrid tech. That AMG-derived petrol unit also forms the basis for the alternative plug-in model, the S580e, which uses it in 367hp form, mates it with a 150hp electric motor and offers an impressive 63 mile all-electric driving range. Top Mercedes-Maybach variants get either a 503hp 4.0-litre V8 or, for the embarrassingly wealthy, a 612hp 6.0-litre V12.

Loving the new S-Class?
No doubt it's a huge improvement over its predecessor, but aesthetically, I still prefer the facelifted V222. I'm not sold on the styling of this new generation S-class.

Smh just call me old fashion! No analog clock,No wood plastic everywhere ! The last great Benz that barely made it is the W220-W221 and they started making vehicles like the others! Take me back to the W141! This is disappointing!
My third s class. The exterior design looks much better in person. The ride and drive are both improved. The dual screen layout is a step backwards for this series both aesthetically and in functionality . The center touch touch screen takes your eye off of the road to operate while you search for a menu or try something as simple changing the radio channel. It also takes away from the comfort experience because the ergonomics of the touchscreen are just far enough away from the user to make the driver move his driving position to operate it. The center console takes away the armrest for your forearm as well as reduces the cup holders size.The touch screen stays covered in fingerprints and the fingerprint id is an extra step that gets annoying on a daily basis. The touch screen is also hard to see at times with the suns reflections. The new air vents sit high and away from the driver and cause a distracting reflection on the windshield. The ride and drive are outstanding , but the electronics make it very frustrating to operate.

OSV provides an S Class level of reviews! I studied the OSV review on the X7 before I went into the dealer to purchase - and I new more about the vehicle than the Sales Rep, and "Genius".
Amazing information is now available at home for all to see. How I wish this info was available years ago when I just walked into a dealer with almost zero information to buy my first car in 1983.

In South Africa all those sophisticated features destined for Maybach is available on the normal S Class range. Like rear-axle steering and the 4D Burmester sound system. Only the S500 and S400d is available in South Africa.

Another superb, encyclopedic review. I can't say I'm that impressed by the interior screens. The dash layout on other models is far better in my view. They seem to have gone back to that period between the command and mbux where they stuck screens on, but a beautiful car nevertheless.

Had three 140 series cars in sequence many, many years ago. They were magnificent. The new ones, the styling to me is nondescript and the interiors major on tech to impress, which I guess is fair enough but the more austere interior styling of the earlier gens appealed more. The point is, the previous generations focused on quality and presence in order to appeal. These latest ones, it’s glitz and glamour, tech and fancy lights. But it looks dull.
I'm fortunate to somehow own a 95 S500.
It needs some love cosmetically and restore electronic malfunction but mechanically the motor is solid although reverse sort of works. Quite a car and once I restore properly to original I'm sure 2nd to none...thanks Jay
I totally understand what your are saying , sitting in the new s class instantly makes you realise that the quality isn't the top priority , the buttons , the finish everything has been taken a back seat compared to the previous models .

For this car not to be EV feels like a step backwards. BMW is doing the right thing making the 7 series into an EV. The Mercedes’ buyer wants an S CLASS EV. Not the EQS.
And before you ask; yes I have an S class and YES I drove the EQS. The EQS was too small.
It’s still amazing how everyone made their EV’a more spacious yet the EQS is smaller inside :))

I wanted to buy one. It is not necessarily ugly but S class clearly lost its charm. On the street, it doesn’t make me turn my head at all, something that is still happening with the old model. The exterior is utterly unimpressive. I can relate to the handles as an evolution but lights, dimensions, overall appearance is bland to deathhh. Sorry Mercedes, but this time you screw this up big time (

it's an endless money pit though, you have any idea how much money it cost to repair these things when they break? its like thousands of dollars each time there's even the slightest thing wrong with it. you basically have to be rich to buy one and repair and maintain one
Great review, but wish you'd use the non-diesel version for test drives as the diesel version is not available in USA.
He did the review in the UK as you can see. Most mercedes in the UK are diesel.

I think the W223 is great, but the W224 is what you really want.
W126 is what I want, but it's almost impossible to find one in mint condition.

What happens if you get a blown tyre,...no spare wheel and all you're left with is a tube of foam sealant.....useless......
In my experience it is very uncommon for a tire to fail. Or the roads in Germany are just better? I threw out every tire repair kit and spare tire which came with any car. If the car should ever break down I'll call for help.

Did he actually say "classy dashboard"? I beg to differ - this is the biggest problem of the current s-class: The drivers seat is surrounded by a disjointed mess, and no matter how many times I look at it, it just doesn´t grow on me. If they had at least made the middle display flush with the entire dashboard to introduce some calm.....
