    I know a lot of people want more than 1 episode per week, but like I said in the video, it's a busy month coming up. I'll be covering 9+ shows in October and this isn't my full time gig! I do have a separate 9-5 job as well! Additionally, I'm currently not planning on watching beyond East Blue until Season 2 of the Live Action series comes out, since I want to watch it without any expectations like I did with Season 1. Season 2 as they've said is likely well over a year away! We would run out of One Piece to watch with many many months left over before we would have more to watch. If things slow down, we might ramp up some but right now I would simply burn out with everything I've currently got going on with the channel. I really don't want to let anyone down but I hope everyone understands and will come along for the ride with me! Love you all!

      Totally understandable reason to only be able to do 1 episode per week but at the very least maybe you could do 2 episodes per reaction. 1 episode per week is going to be a pain in the ass pacing for watching. It was hard enough for those of us who watched this series back in the day in real time having to wait week after week and you're not going to get the views you could get with at least 2. It's especially going to get boring when you get to fillers. Just a suggestion. Either way, I wish you luck on the journey you're about to embark on. It's amazing.

    The biggest difference in the anime is Luffy is crazy strong to start, he'll continue to be that way until Arlong. Remember Garp said in live action "I thought I trained you better than this" and that's what your seeing here in the anime, Luffy is crazy strong that he CAN break swords with his hands if the enemy isn't strong enough.

    If i can give you a word of advice. Please watch more than 1 episode at a time. For a reactor who wants to speculate and break down the events of the episode each week, there will be times that a 22 minute episode simply doesnt give you a lot of material to discuss. You will very likely feel more fulfilled and have a better viewing experience ESPECIALLY later on, it you watch the episodes in batches of 2.
    Hope you take this in consideration. Cheers.

    Yeah, Live Action Luffy is definitely a lot more traditionally heroic. I think that change was made just to help with shortening the storylines, since Luffy needs a lot less reasoning to jump in and help people in that case, but I love him in either case and the more brash , straightforward version of the manga/anime is just so unique and fun!
    Also, don't feel bad about comparing the two. That's why I'm here, I want to see how the anime looks to someone who saw LA first! And I love it.
    I also agree, this first episode is REALLY strong. This may be blasphemy, but I like this opening better than the manga's (which opens directly on Luffy's backstory).
    Thanks for sharing this! I look forward to how you feel about what comes up next!

    And yeah Luffy's definitely a guy who speaks whatever is on his mind. In the manga and anime he has no internal monologue/thought bubbles that you might find with other protags because he'll either always say what he's thinking then and there or just straight up act on it.

      And that’s one of many reasons we all love Luffy. Think about his fights as well, we never really get an idea of what’s going on in his head but Luffy is the definition of man of action.
      He just is straight to the point. And that’s why he’s a great Captain (I also kinda love UA-camr Ohara’s breakdown of who Luffy is as a captain and his role on the SH).

    a couple fun facts: nami was actually introduced a lot earlier in both the anime and live-action compared to the manga (both featuring zoro earlier as well). the anime and LA also both adapted this section of the story with alvida's ship as the setting, whereas in the manga she actually had a small island base with her ship only appearing in the background.

    • @zyphyris
      @zyphyris 9 місяців тому +11

      also an addendum to that first fact: nami's still shown early on outside of the manga, since she appeared on both the weekly shonen jump cover and the color spread (colored illustrations oda does every now and then) where the first chapter debuted.

    • @madao2794

    Luffy is still vulnerable to blades but hes so physically strong that he can actually break the blades with his bare hands.
    Also it feels like early dragonball cause the creator (Eiichiro Oda) is a huge fan of dragonball and its creator as well so theres a lot of influences from that.
    You comparing it from live action to anime is pretty great! Its cool to see how it from someone else's perspective.

  • @Merione
    @Merione 9 місяців тому +46

    Despite all the differences, something the live action did extremely well was using the "power of hindsight", for a lack of a better term. Coming from the manga/anime into the live action you just **know** that the writers are intimately familiar with the source material, and they did a great job in incorporating details and worldbuilding elements that the manga/anime only introduced way later. And I'm not talking just about the Garp stuff, but of course I won't go into any more details. I'll be following your journey. Keep it up!

    I believe that Coby in anime is much better represented than in Live Action. At least for the first episode. In LA, he did not actually stand up for himself against Alvida, he only followed Luffy because Luffy defeated Alvida and went along with him. In anime, I like it much better because he actually stood for himself against Alvida even not knowing what to happen next. It is like Do or Die for him in anime because he does not really know whether Luffy can actually defeat Alvida. If Luffy did lose to Alvida, I can not imagine what she is gonna do to him. It took a lot of courage from him to do it.

  • @afanzatara5139

    At least you should watch to the true final arc of the East Blue saga, which is Loguetown. So you could stop perfectly on the final scene of the saga which the LA took to be it's final scene too (the barrel scene).

  • @muhammadfaisal5Y5

    All I can say is "welcome".
    Luffy is quite sassy and straight-forward. Coby is too preoccupied with what could happen and Luffy tells him that he is not afraid to die as long as it means he tried. He is so bright that he brings out the simplicity in things. Coby plucks up the courage and while he does not regret it, he is still timid. When you talked about introducing Luffy through Coby's perspective. I think you are right becuase he is not portayed as main character but someone who just shows up and becomes the elephent in the room.

    The opening theme is indeed played in the live action - when Merry first sets sail in episode 4, and in the final scene in episode 8. They saved it for the most impactful moments and I appreciated their restraint.
    The anime also has some of the best musical scores IMO. Really gives you that sense of adventure. Watch out for the eye catch (the mid-episode cards)! Each member has their own little theme that suits their character perfectly.

  • @dekuisagreatmaincharacter
    @dekuisagreatmaincharacter 9 місяців тому +3

    It’s not just Luffy, pretty much all the characters were “toned down” to better fit the tone of the live-action, and for obvious reasons. Live-action and animation are two widely different mediums, and what works for one may not always work on the other. Besides, the LA series was a great opportunity to show the story of One Piece for people who are put off by its overly cartoony and over-the-top aesthetic, while still being significantly more cartoonish than your average Netflix series. Similarly, the characters all maintain their core personality traits, but they’re less extreme.
    My experience with One Piece is that I watched the first four or five episodes with my dad one random day and found it decently amusing. Then when the LA came out we decided to check it and ate it up. Afterwards I was hangover on One Piece and decided to start the anime again, but it was too slow-paced with awkward pauses, so I started reading the manga instead. Three weeks pass and I’ve read almost 600 chapters. I forced myself to stop just before the timeskip literally yesterday because I have a bunch of college stuff to do. I’m also concurrently watching the anime with my dad, who wanted to continue the story but can’t read manga. Additionally I bought a One Piece keychain and my mom bought me a straw hat. So I guess I’m a One Piece fan now?

    So glad you decided to watch the anime! To answer your (sort of) question about the POV of the series: unless he's in the scene, One Piece has never been written from Luffy's perspective. Even then, we never get to see Luffy's thought process or inner monologue; he just acts what he's thinking. And that's entirely by design.
    Hope that helps, and hope you're enjoying the rest of the series!

    I love seeing your perspective, I think it's cool seeing someone who watched the Live Action first, react.
    To your question about the Roger stuff. The anime is mainly set following Luffy's journey so occasionally we learn more about things that happened in the past and get explanations. But the execution of Roger was always treated like a tale people told. Rather than a grounded event we got to watch.
    So that scene in the Live Action was actually a real treat for us, since it felt like we got to attend the execution of the Pirate King and watch history be made.
    Also, I love Inaki's portrayal in the Live Action, he adapted Luffy better than I could have ever imagined, but the writers did make him out a bit more as a hero than a pirate. You can already see from ep 1 but it will become increasingly obvious that Luffy doesn't care about rules; whether societal, moral or even social.
    At any point, in any situation, he is going to say and do exactly what he wants. Because being free to do what you want is what it means to be a pirate.

    What i like about original Luffy is that hes like a force, an immovable object that just stands in every scene and waits till the other people to show agency before he acts. Just contrast the Alvita confrontation with the LA. LA luffy stands in-between koby and alvita. Original luffy stands next to koby, while koby faces alivta himself. Only after Koby stood up to her, does he act.
    This is all aided by the fact that hes actually overpowered compared to the LA (which i think was Odas point. Theyre not supposed to struggle)

    I like how you observed how people "experience" Luffy moving through, as opposed to the live action where Luffy felt more actively influential to the side characters. One thing i love about the anime and manga is that the world is moving independently of Luffy. Things aren't happening because of Luffy, there are things already happening, and Luffy just happens to stroll on by. This wasn't really possible in the live action since there's so little screen time, there isn't enough time for the world to move on it's own, and it just makes more sense for the story to progress forward because of our main cast. One big glaring example will be how Mihawk shows up in the live action BECAUSE of Luffy, as opposed to his introduction in the manga and anime. Hope you keep watching! The reason Luffy inspiring Koby is better in the live action is because he didn't even mean to inspire him here, and that's the biggest difference between the LA and anime/manga.
    LAffy talks, Luffy acts, they both lead to the same thing but the way he is in the LA means they have to make monumental changes later just for character consistency.

    Coming from the LA to this I think your biggest surprise will be is what supposedly human characters are physically capable of. Aside from "normal" human height having a VERY wide range, there's a lot of "HOW ARE YOU ALIVE AFTER THAT" moments.

    Yea Koby gained his respect when he chose to follow his dream with all his heart and said that to Alvida. He genuinely didn't like him before, but Koby proved himself to Luffy.
    Also yes. Many think this is the same genre as most shonen. This is an adventure shonen, like early db, not a battle shonen, like Naruto, bleach, and db after the first saga.
    It stays an adventure shonen throughout. Fights exist, and fights are amazing, but they are more of a vehicle to drive the plot and story forward, than the centric point.
    Like, in dbz, the fight, overcoming the opponent, and figuring out how to defeat that opponent are the main plot. With this, it's the reasons we are fighting, the goal we are trying to achieve, with the fight just being the tool to achieve it.
    One piece is basically a practice of having an extremely grounded premise and problem, and asking, what if we could solve that by punching it really hard. And it executes this better than any other story. But all in all, it's about the adventure.

    This was so much fun! It’s such a unique perspective to see someone react to the live action first and now watch the anime, seeing what changes were made and also what the live action kept. The great thing about the live action is they kept the spirit and the main story beats the same, but there are a few changes they made that mean you still have a lot of surprises awaiting you, and I can’t wait to watch your reaction!
    And I’m glad you’re watching in subs, if for no other reason than that Luffy’s voice actor makes the funniest little noises. There’s another character who has the cutest, sweetest little voice in the Japanese who I find personally grating in the English, but you won’t meet that character until season two.

    I'm soo happy that you decided to dive more into One Piece. If I may suggest, it will be more time efficient if you also read the manga chapters that covers every single anime episodes that you reacted, episode 1 anime is only cover 2 chapters of manga, so you can catch up to both anime and manga at the same time. You'll be surprised at how different approached the manga, anime and live action goes but still keep the essence of the story. Just how the way Oda wanted it to be, so viewers can experience something different on each media, but in the end it still the same One Piece that we all love.

You will never regret starting the One piece, it is indeed one of the greatest masterpiece ever written reflecting real life problems and issues of our past and current society under comedic relief and cartoonish undertone, but nevertheless, the message always delivers and relates in real life.

    There are few anime with great dub, but one piece dub is horrendous. Good thing that you are watching sub. The original Japanese voice actors are incredible, how intense, genuine touching, and entertaining their performances were.
    - an orchestral version of the "we are" opening is done in live action in episode 4 end when they first started sailing on the going Merry
