- Linn Berggren, 'the blonde' sister of the group, took on the main role in the beginning of Ace of Base's success (think of 'All that she wants', 'the sign', 'don't turn around') etc, but took a step back in 1998.
She did still record a lot of demo's that never got released, because she recorded these in the studio at home with her brother Jonas, sister Jenny and friend Ulf, all from the band.

Such an one and only voice and presence! Linn could've have been a mega star! But instead of it all she left and hided. I respect and adore this very much, hoping it has not been because of depression and illness. I respect it very much even though I miss her so much! Who knows maybe one day she will be back, hopefully happy, and we will get to know what really happened! Great source, fantastic demos... this could've been wonderful songs!

Linn reminds me Judith Anna Pronk from Alice deejay band, this group became very famous for the song 'better off alone', Judith couldn't manage the pressure of being in public and abandoned the group. She was very outgoing and pretty and was hided for 20 years and even she promised never retorn to the music, she got married, had two kids and has her own clothing line bussiness and also is a make up artist. The point is that she cameback after twenty years, she didn't want interviews and somehow her fans after asking her to comeback she at last did it and CAMEBACK not as a profesional singer but is making concerts in countries from Europe. I think Linn's fans could do something more to make Linn comeback as Judith from Alice deejay did. Maybe Linn someday could sing with Jenny as a unique mega concert.

Not great, but I'm grateful that we got to hear her sing at all. And there is still demo material and whole songs that are yet to be released. Hopefully we will eventually get to hear them.
If Linn had been the sister who persisted she could have as become as big as Madonna. But it wasn't who she was. So it is perfectly fitting that she isn't famous. We should all be happy she isn't under that kind of pressure if she did not enjoy it. I'd still love to meet her, but I doubt that will ever happen. I preferred her voice over her sisters also, it had an extra layer of some kind
+willzer808 The bottom line here is that not being a good fit for this role to start with, Linn wouldn't let it consume or destroy her. For the sake of her siblings, she stayed in the band for years, doing what she could and no more, and then when it wasn't worthwhile anymore, she got out of the business. She's a smart woman who sacrificed much for her family, and now deserves some peace of mind.
I agree that had she wanted to fully embrace stardom, Linn could have been big, whether with Ace of Base or on her own. Talent and beauty are good to have, but she had something extra special--a kind of "magic" that no one else has, which explains all of the obsession over her, even to this day (albeit among diehard fans now rather than the public at large). Ace of Base was only ever at their zenith when Linn was perceived as the lead singer and frontwoman; the band saw Jenny and her as equals, and treated them that way, but that was not the path to ultimate success. Although I am also a fan of Jenny's, and consider her talent and beauty a close match for her sister's, even I have to admit that my interest in Ace of Base back then waned with Linn's interest in being part of the band--if she wasn't so interested and involved, then I wasn't so interested. Only of late did I realize how much of a fan I was of hers, actually, even back in the day. I thought it was the music back then (I rejected individual celebrity out of principle and focused on the art of everything), but now I almost only think of Linn, what happened to her, and how much I miss her. I think even Ace of Base themselves realize now that they are not much without her--they pretty much admitted that when they redefined themselves as the four original members exclusively, putting Linn back into the official lineup, and then went on indefinite hiatus, "waiting for magic" ;) if you will--the day their own princess (Linn) will "kiss" them and wake Ace of Base from their slumber.

rbrtck I'm impressed of your knowledge of this band, especially in little history of Lynn, on big question/reasons, why was she step back to not too being famous at that time when Ace of base was getting bigger n popular because of her(Lynn) impact.. was involved in this band, there was no need to argue ..but I thought this is the sad ending for me..maybe for the other fans too..but maybe not for Lynn.. she had not any other choice to go/step further..just my opinion..
Lord Thornton Eddington yes exactly. Linn has said that she loves to sing but never wanted to be a singer and have that fame so being an introvert and shy, being considered the leader of the group as the lead vocalist must have been a daunting thing. I think she even insisted on occasion that Jenny lead the group but I think when the group got bigger in America she wanted out at that point. I think that no matter how talented one is, if attention and fame isn't comfortable for you, you'll never be happy but with what Linn gave us, wow what a voice. I heard she's living a quiet life in Sweden now.

The Berggrens spirituality and musicality might come from their relation with obotrit princesses that got nine children with Olof king of Sweden, around 1000 AD, one of these Iryna of Kyiv-Rus became a saint in the orthodox church...
the music was so different by 1998. I wonder why she left. I also wonder why she was recorded for da capo and flowers but wasnt on either of them.
She was on both of them, but it's quite hard to tell sometimes. She's usually either duplicating what Jenny is singing, or buried in the BVs, barely sounding like herself. I think the only place she really sounds like her old self on those two albums is in the chorus of Da Capo - appropriate given the meaning of the term!
@@tmb8807 She just didn't want to be lead anymore and wasn't planning on performing any of the songs so they started phasing out her vocals. Just makes it easier to promote the music without her.
What is sensuality and spirituality? Now the french and the world knows by three siblings remotely related, probably, with the french royal Capets. Anne de Kyiv married Henri Capet, she was daughter to Iryna of Kyiv/Ingegerd, who grew up in Västergötland, Sweden with 8 siblings, children of two obotritic princesses. Ace of Base must descend from them. There is hardly any other way they can look both nordic and slavic...They are probably related also to other guys who are not so sexy and well known as Birger Jarl, who moved center of Sweden from Västergötland to Stockholm area, also ockupied Neva mouth in Russia(later St Petersburg), was attacked by Alexander, russian tsar, earning him the name Alexander Nevskij...

+stormxjp Well, from everything I've ever seen, Linn was almost always the one who sang the demos--her and/or Jonas, who of course wrote most of their songs. Then the decision was made as to who will sing what, and since the beginning there had always been a deliberate effort by the band to give Jenny at least as many singing parts, while toward the end Jenny was far more willing to record the final version, so she sang even more parts. Linn's vocals were always being replaced because she sang so many of the demos, while Jenny almost never did (except for her own songs). Note, however, that for the first album both Linn and Jenny sang every song, and it was their producer who went with Linn's voice almost exclusively for the ones with the greatest hit potential (and completely exclusively for some of them, such as "All That She Wants" and "Happy Nation"). As time went on, Linn wanted to sing less and for Jenny to sing more, and they and the band did their best to force the issue, but Linn still generally sang the demos.
Trust me, if it were entirely up to the producers, A&R guys, and other record company executives, they would have had Linn sing lead on almost every song, particularly the singles, with Jenny as her main backup, but since Linn was mostly only willing to sing demos into Jonas' little microcassette recorder, there usually wasn't anything they could do. What could they have done, put a gun to her head and force her into the studio to sing more? Eventually that was effectively what they did with "Everytime It Rains". Clive Davis at Arista saw Linn pulling away, and ordered her to sing this song solo, which she refused to do, so Jenny sang it instead. Everyone at Arista and Mega loved it, including Davis, but he angrily demanded that Linn sing it or else (presumably he would have cut the band from Arista's roster, sealing off the lucrative US market). Under protest, Linn went into the studio, sang the whole song in one take, and left. Davis and Arista judged Linn's rendition to be superior, and the band had no support from Mega, who agreed with Davis and liked Linn's version so much that they secured the rights to the song themselves for release in Europe and worldwide as a single (and also as part of "Flowers" in some territories). Both Linn and Jenny were upset and furious over this, and instead of forcing Linn back into the spotlight, it only hastened her retreat into the shadows.
Linn had her reasons, and I respect her wish for Jenny to be the lead singer. Blame Linn if you will, but just so you know, everyone else who was involved with Ace of Base agrees with you. Now, before blaming Linn, think about the misery that being in this business had brought to her, and the guilt and fear she felt for Jenny having been attacked and nearly killed by one of Linn's many stalkers. In addition, Linn had never wanted to be a pop singer anyway, while Jenny did. Linn wanted out, and I don't blame her for that. I'll always be a fan of hers, but she owes us nothing.

@@rbrtck She is our Queen. She at least owes us a wave and a smile after all these years so we know she's alive and well. It's sad story that it seems a humble introverted girl that just wanted to sing in the choir and gig with her siblings ended up getting world wide fame and attention. Even today their songs are legendary and not forgotten. That says a lot but Linn has to accept her role in music history. She may not want the responsibility but it's still hers. SHE is responsible as an influence for the careers of a lot of female pop artists today. She wasn't just some singer in a band she was a 90's icon.
When you think "Ace of Base" you don't think about anyone but Linn and her voice (sorry Jenny but it's true). Soon as Linn left the band so did peoples interests in it. They're albums didn't sell well without Linn's vocals on them. Linn was the winning formula to Ace of Base and truthfully I always felt like Linn was bigger than the band. She had a voice that outgrew Jonas and Ulf's simple music style. In 98-02 their music was already out of fashion. What she needed was some real pop producers to sit down in the studio with her. Imagine if she had worked with the Neptunes in 98'. We saw what they did for Justin Timberlake and Brittany Spears back in those days. Imagine if the had produced for Linn and did an Album with her. No way she wouldn't have had a couple of grammy's.
The more I learn about Linn the more you realize she was just unhappy in her role. I feel a bit sad to hear about her solo work she had been working on and her wanting to produce more. Perhaps she would have enjoyed working behind the scenes better and if they had let her she would have found that life more comfortable and still would have been contributing to music in some sort of way. I feel cheated that we won't ever know the true extent of her musical talent. You would think that with all the tech of today that maybe she would of popped open a twitter or something but whatever the deal even after 20 years she wants no parts of who she once was.
Every Time it Rains is one of the best recordings I've ever heard of her. Despite how it came to be it's a Celine Deon level song. Don't know what it was. Perhaps that it was a song written and produced by other people entirely or that her mood at the time fit the music but it's a hauntingly beautiful song and just a reminder of what Linn was capable of doing and also of what never would become.

That's not true. Linn's was never crazy. Her house was invaded by a demented fan when she wasn't there. And got scared. So she left the band.

+Tessar Van basten Reportedly, Linn is living the peaceful, private life she wanted in her hometown of Gothenburg (Göteborg), Sweden, and is a high school music teacher. She lives very close to her brother Jonas, whom she sees frequently, and neither live very far from their sister Jenny and their parents, so there is still plenty of family around her even though they are not active as a band anymore. I don't know how Jenny and Jonas are getting along these days (given their dispute over the band), but Linn is still very close to both of them.
