@Jeffery Julio i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
We bought our machine a few days ago, we were frustrated to the “we have to return it” point, because we could not get proper grinding size & pressure. Luckily we got into your channel, and now enjoying good well pressured delicious coffee on its point. Keep it up the good videos, we have learned so much from them.
@@flynnsarcade.1982 Maybe u can try different roasted level beans, I mean from my experience the lighter roasted beans the finer it can be grinded by breville coffee machine, and also you can try different brands.I tried nearly 20 kinds of beans, then found just 1 perfect for my breville es870.
After almost 2 years of using sage barista Express I'm still learning it and enjoying amazing coffee that I'm making with this machine. Best machine in this price.
Thanks for the video Hoon, helps newbies like me out! That’s what I’ve found also with older, lesser quality beans, that I have to grind them so fine and almost choke the machine to get a decent shot. At first I thought that’s what’s normal, but when I tried fresh beans, grind setting 7 and mid range on the pressure, the shot was perfect! So bean quality and freshness is definitely and huge factor, if not the main factor in pulling great shots. But at the same time, this machine is capable of getting decent shots out of older, lesser quality beans. Keep the videos coming my man!
If anyone has a low extraction pressure this is the answer also. Did a little bit of homework on the reason why we get low pressure. So the reason is because the water is passing through the coffee and not giving a back pressure (little bit of hydraulic theory) especially with the filter that has more holes in it (single wall). So what did was put the grinder to setting 1, this will make the grounds finer thus more compact. I did not use a setting for the amount, i just manually grinded as needed, this is so I don't waste. When i packed it, I pushed down a little harder than I would with the double wall with the packer tool. Make sure its packed down really tight, put some elbow into it. Then used the razor. This perfected the pressure to come right in the middle of the "ideal espresso". Hope this helps!
Yep, if it's going too fast or there isn't enough pressure you go with finer grounds and/or tamp harder. The problem comes when you're already on the finest grind that the grinder can manage and you're still not getting enough pressure. To an extent, you can tamp harder and watch out for channeling, but if that's not enough, then you might need to just get a better grinder or accept the need for a pressurized basket.
Chris L I bought the same machine 2 months ago and I can’t build pressure unless I keep the grind at it’s finest (#1) and overfill the single wall basket. Every time I use the razor I get zero pressure. I always make sure to really tamper my pucks but can’t seem to find where the issue comes from. My sister bought the same machine and I easily get pressure with hers. Any advice?
I’ve had my breville about 2 weeks and the first time I used the single wall I couldn’t get pressure. Hoon suggested going finer and I guess it was the pressure I was tamping needed to be harder and once I put my elbow into it I was able to get a nice puck and a pressure at about 12 o’clock when I pulled the shot. I was also only at an outer grind setting of 3 with my lavassa super crema coffee. So I still have a little room to play with.
@@richterstitcher7936 Yes! I also learned that different coffee's will give you different pressure. Assuming if its oily the you will get more pressure, if its dry less, sometimes very low.
So my Barista Express arrived today while I was at work. I stopped and bought Eight O'clock Espresso Roast, strictly because of the price, and figured I was going to have to do a lot of testing & wasting. I couldn't get the pressure figured out, and your video was the first one that popped up when I started researching. The pressure is perfect now, and just like you said - it's not the greatest, but it works out great for a latte! I'll be stopping by a local shop near my work on Monday to pick-up some legit fresh beans. Thanks for the info!
Thank you for this. I got used to making espresso with my cheaper machine (Delonghi 15 bar)and an adjustable hand grinder (150 turns) When the 2nd machine finally started leaking like a sieve I finally bit the bullet and moved up to this "big girl"(boy?) home espresso machine. Even though it's not a commercial machine it does take some dialing in to get a desirable espresso. I love the way you go through the problem solving and nuances thoughtfully, clearly and patiently.
A lot of people are finding the better tasting shots at borderline choking the machine - ie upwards of 30 seconds for a 1:2 ratio. My theory is because it uses a 54mm portafilter and the 25second rule is based on a 58mm portafilter, the 54mm portafilter's puck is narrower and thicker, meaning the water needs more time to properly work through the thicker puck. So, I was not surprised that the finer grind setting produced a better result - it is consistent with what other users experienced.
I have owned a Breville 840xl for 12 years and now I got an Infuser(which is basically the same). In my 12 years of tries the most important thing is fresh coffee. I source my coffee from a local roaster shop and I always take it within 4 days of roasting date and use it in most 10 days. Also I like to only have one variable to work with and that is the grind. I have a click tamper, a scale and fresh coffee. The only thing that I have to modify is the grind. But I also have a Breville Pro grinder that has lots of adjustments for the grind.
Just to make sure that ure machine is fine or the pressure gauge or sensor is fine. U can try doing this. Put on a double walled basket on ure portafilter it doesnt matter if its a 2 cup or 1 cup as long as ure using the double walled basket. Put it on ure portafilter no need to put any coffee empty will do. Pull a shot ure pressure gauge should go 10 or 11 o clock.
great video. yes, coffee beans vary greatly, batch to batch same brand as well require adjustment. i've had beans from a well known grocer that simply would not show any pressure because they were so dry. i don't go high end but may try a little soon. i use costco espresso beans and they work fine but each bag varies. i do empty use all beans in bin each use, that way i can switch to decaf in the evening or change beans for a little change, thanks for your informative video.
Great video. I figured this out as well. Glad to see increasing the finer grind made the pressure come up. I also had the same bitter experience with cheaper store-bought packaged beans that were holiday specials. The local roasted beans were much better.
Lovin the channel Hoon, keep on experimenting. I think the takeaway lesson here is that if you’re into coffee enough that you’re going to invest a lot of money getting a decent machine (back off coffee machine snobs, this is an expensive machine for me), then you really need to buy good freshly roasted beans, not from a supermarket. 👍
You're right about that! Some of friends ask me to upgrade to real espresso machine but I really Barista Express. I can not justify spending $1500 or more on the machine.
Thanks. After watching your video I will use the setting that you use in your video because my coffee machine was not showing pressure and that's why it was not good taste coffee.
Got a good shot at the 3 grinder setting with 17g of lavassa super crema coffee with my single wall basket! Finally!! I’ll need to look for fresher beans since I’m not sure how fresh they come from Amazon. Thanks for the tips!
Great videos. My machine is producing virtually no pressure. Even with a blind shot with the rubber disk, it only just gets to the middle of the espresso range. Do you think it's the pump?
I thought lower number on the pressure setting means coarser grind, not finer. Wouldn’t you need to do finer grind (so go higher in number on the grind wheel) to fix underextraction?
Exact same issue. Except I bought fresh roasted beans down the street and even at 1 grind I still can't get into the black. I tried your idea to use the pressurized basket as a test and the pressure is good. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I'm getting close to the, "I'm returning this thing" point, too.
I own a Sage machine, which is quite similar to Breville. However, I'm experiencing issues with the double shot function-it doesn't produce a double shot, and there are also problems with the pressure.
I’m having problems with my machine too. I got it a few days ago. I watched a bunch of videos anyway I’m setting my outside grinder number to 10 yesterday and it worked perfectly. It stayed right in the gray area where it was supposed to and I use the same coffee and did the same exact thing today and it didn’t work. I had to put it all the way down to seven and then finally it works but it’s so weird because I didn’t do anything different yet one day 10 works and the next day seven works so it’s really confusing.
Hi, I got my Barista express yesterday. I am using Starbucks Dark Espresso roast beans. I can't get the pressure to up in the espresso range. I've tried fine grind to setting 1. I can't get the pressure to increase. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. Please help
I also have been trying the Starbucks dark espresso and having the same problem! So frustrating! I think I’ll try local like he said. I’m sick of trying to get it right
Same to me. Many suggested to buy fresher beans from local roaster and to adjust the inner burr setting. But many also told me the Pressure Gauge is only for decorative purpose and we shouldn't be bothered by it...
I learned I had to remove the hopper, pop out the bur, remove the bur handle, and dial in my bur to around 2-3, then set my fineness to around 4 and then I was getting the press on the amount just fine. before that, I was not getting the pressure on the Barista Express.
RonnyKohlmann No, when it comes to fresh roast beans, lighters roasts need to be ground finer, darker more coarse. Every coffee is different and will need to be adjusted accordingly. Also the grind setting will need to be adjusted throughout the week as they become more exposed to the air, not to mention humidity which changes all the time. For the coffee I buy, I set to 4 or 5, I also adjusted the inner burr finer by 1 notch.
What’s the difference between a dual wall shot and an optimal pressure single wall shot? In taste. I’ve tired every grind size, 17/18/20 gram dose, doff portafilters, and I still get low pressure. No gray zone. No creama. Dual wall comes out perfect pressure and great taste.
Mine is brand new, I get good pressure but too slow of a drip no matter the grind size, the portafilter is even with the razor tool, maybe tamp too hard? I use a spring automatic type tamper.
I purchased my Breville Barista Express about 8 months ago along with a 2.2lb. bag of Lavazza Super Crema medium roast coffee beans. 4 days later, my wife & I suffered through a house fire that destroyed half our home. I wasn't able to use my espresso until last week. The coffee M.F.D. date is 02/19/2019, & the B.B. date is 01/03/2021. Should I dump this coffee & purchase a new bag? This is a totally new thing for me since I'm only used to drinking my coffee light & sweet.
Hi Hoon. I've been buying San Francisco Bay whole bean from Amazon. I know I can't expect the quality from local merchant but I do not have a local shop as well as a limited budget. So this seems to be my best option. I would appreciate your opinion . Thanks for all the great video's.
the best i've found to make a coffee ☕️ brew is lavazza sinfonico. i use #4 grind and extract 2 double shots consecutively. then add water. it's not the least bitter - just good strong coffee add cream and it's beautiful. /200510
I have the same issue Orlando if I use store bought beans. I either set it to 1 and push as had as I can with the tamper, then I get just enough pressure, or I use the double walled filter. Are you using single wall or double wall filter here? No idea how you are getting enough pressure. If I use fresh beans from local cafe it's very easy to get enough pressure with the single wall filter.
Would you change the grind size in the grinder. Or leave it at the pre set number. You did not mention your grind number you are using. I have tired many changes on both and still under extraction every time. Have only had it for 3 weeks. Getting very frustrated . I have fresh roasted beans and some tools to help with the level and tamping. Could use some help. Thank you. 😊
Hi Hoon!! New subscriber and things and like the content. Could you please tell me what burr setting, side dial setting, and front amount setting you where at when you produced this video. Thank you. Kevin 👍🇦🇺
I’m using the non pressurized basket, but I’m having almost 0 pressure at the pressure gage, so Should I change the Grinder levels? I was using number 3 Thanks a lot
@@grammymurry Sure! Actually many people prefer a medium roast for espresso. But some prefer lighter or darker roast.. best thing is as you said: experiment and see what works best for you!
I have that same machine, about 3 years now. Know that it is common for the pressure gauge to stop working. It still makes appropriate pressure, but the gauge is dead (blockage) and you have to dimantle the whole damn machine to fix it. No fun.
I've jjust done my first cleaning with the tablet (after around 2 months of use) and noticed that the pressure does not max out. Any ideas why? When I do espresso, even if everything else is perfectly allright, I never can get past around 11 o'clock on the gauge.
Hoon my coffee has stopped pouring from my sage barista expressure the pressure is going too high , I haven’t changed any grind size etc I poured coffee this morning and now not poring … I’ve cleaned the machine , but no difference please help .. very frustrating 😢
Oh my beloved Eight O’clock gets spanked. I love that brand for my drip coffee with some almond milk, but sad to hear it may not be a good brand for espresso. Gonna still try it in my Krupa pressurized portafilter. Great reviews Hoon.
I just bought my barista express, I can’t seem to get the right grind setting, I’m getting low pressure. I started my burr setting at 6 and now it’s in 3, started my grind setting at 7 & now on 3 and I still have low pressure. I’m using the Lava Zac gran creama, please help!!!
It took me a LONG time to dial in my Breville Barista Express (I live in the U.S.). Hoon does a great job of explaining how to dial in the shot, and there are a few other channels that do, as well. First things first: the beans matter - A LOT. As shown in this video, you'll be chasing the settings if you use cheap beans. Make sure that the beans you're using aren't oily, either; that will really clog the burrs in the grinder. Second: use a kitchen scale to get the amount of ground coffee - the dial on the Brevile is ONLY for the amount of time. Third: with some beans, you may need to increase the amount of coffee by a few grams (no more than 20 g, however). Fourth: If you've already increased the amount of coffee to about 18 g without any change in the pressure, then start dialing back the grind settings. Breville comes with a factory setting of "5," but I found that it was not adequate to get good pressure with the locally roasted coffee I have been using. I eventually made an adjustment to the grind settings on the burrs themselves so that I could grind finer (there's a UA-cam video for how to do it - it's pretty easy). Fifth: the tamper that comes with the Breville is for beginners; get a good one like Hoon uses - I bought the same one and it was a revelation.
Hello Hoon. Does making the coffee grounds coarser create more pressure? It seems like if the grounds were finer they would create more pressure. Thank you for your videos!!!
Hey Hoon, I actually realized I mistook the higher numbers on my barista express as the finer settings. So I was dialing it coarser (thinking it was finer) and getting less pressure. Your videos have helped me so much. Thank you buddy :)
Hoon's Coffee it’s working great. You might try caffe con leche. Shot of espresso, add milk and steam milk and coffee together. Add sweetener. It’s really good. Very popular in Latin America.
Hi I wanna ask, I bought beans and it’s a mix beans (arabica & robusta). This beans has no pressure during extraction. Extract very fast like water no crema at all. What should I do? Other beans extract just fine with my Breville barista express
I'm using quality beans from a local roaster in Melbourne AU, been using this machine for the past 1 week but can't get a good shot yet. everytime it smells burnt. is it normal that shot start to come out for 2 seconds in pre-infusion pressure before it goes to espresso range at around 4/5? mine does that.. it looks in the right pressure but doesn't come as warm honey. even if I insert the arm without the dose just to clean with water, it goes to the espresso range!
Hoon's Coffee i just found a new info in regards to the machine, there is grind setting inside which is set to 6. Now i know y I wasn’t getting fine grind!
Hi! me again! ok, so i'm going to throw this one at you. I have always brewed using the double basket and dose. Ive been using Lavazza Rossa. I decided to try the single (unpressurised) basket. I used the same grind setting as double but the single dose, tamped the same (medium pressure) pressure off the scale, extraction very slow, bitter crap. Have you experimented with the single basket? Its just for those times when i want a lighter drink, less caffeine etc.
The pressurized basket is more foregiving of mistakes. It's really intended for when you have to use ground coffee from the store rather than grinding it yourself. It does an OKish job, but it also limits how good the results can be. If you were only able to afford the espresso machine or the grinder, it's a way of making due with the machine while you save up for the grinder. Not ideal, but it does work.
Can u do a review on the peets dark roast french roast beans ? Just got a breville barista pro and am having a hard time but the grounds in my portafilter come out muddy and smushy the puck stays on it or comes out very muddy ...
I’m also curious about Peet’s! Everyone says it good but I tried it once and hated it, but this was before I knew what I was doing so I wonder if it was just me 🤷🏻♀️
I just got a niche zero and noticed that my breville chokes at extracting even at 22-24 setting with 17g. I am wondering what I might be doing wrong. I thought I needed to go higher numbers as my breville can't handle fine beans but now I am sure I am doing something wrong.
Hi Hoon any chance you can do another video on the Lavazza Rossa? Really struggling getting the correct pull time however pressure appears to be fine? what grind do you use for it?
i bought a sage barista express and weirdly i had a high pressure fast extraction in my first bag coffee lol, idk how to define that but i will try to get another beans i see how it will go i guess

Follow me on Instagram and I can talk you through video chat. instagram.com/hoonscoffeeaz/
Hoon's Coffee thanks I will do that. Thank you very much. You will hear from me. Greetz
What is your burr grinder in the bean hopper set to?
What’s the difference between a dual wall shot and an optimal pressure single wall shot? In taste. I’ve tired every grind size, 17/18/20 gram dose, doff portafilters, and I still get low pressure. No gray zone. No creama.
Dual wall comes out perfect pressure and great taste.
How come on the instructions it comes with, it says to use a finer grind for under-extraction? And you switched to coarser
Hi and thank you for this great video. Do you use the Single or the Double Wall filter? 1 or 2 cup? I hope you will be answer my question. 😊
Any tips on how to deal with low pressure when a person buys pre-ground coffee at the store. Would it help to use the single wall insert?
I have to go inner bur to 3 and outer to 2 , better , but still the pressure is not high enough
Which grinder settings did you use?
What about the opposite? My machine's resting at 8 bar! The steam bar is 1 though which seems okay
What internal burr setting do you use? And is the burr setting the same in all videos?
If I use the Razor is consistently will not build pressure even with proper adjustments. My razor seems like it cuts the headspace way too deep
I have the same problem with Lavazza beans, I switched to market beans during quarantine
I tried the above on different theee grind size and I still get no créma no pressure it doesn’t even move
What was the grinder sizes?
Hoon's Coffee I tired 1, 5, 7, 10
the best i've found to make a coffee ☕️ brew is lavazza sinfonico.
i use #4 grind and extract 2 double shots consecutively. then add water. it's not the least bitter - just good strong coffee add cream and it's beautiful. /200510
Lavazza is a very popular brand in Italy and France
Hey and in which number you have your internal grind?
Thank you. 😊
Mine have high pressure …. Should I just set it to five too?
Hi Hoon!! New subscriber and things and like the content. Could you please tell me what burr setting, side dial setting, and front amount setting you where at when you produced this video. Thank you. Kevin 👍🇦🇺
Since I also live in Tucson, what and where would you recommend a light roasted whole bean? (Similar to Starbucks Veranda). Thanks!
I’m using the non pressurized basket, but I’m having almost 0 pressure at the pressure gage, so Should I change the Grinder levels? I was using number 3
Thanks a lot
Hi Hoon great 1st time watching your video and have learnt a lot. What is the model of your machine?
Great video fun and informative thank you
The eight o clocks are medium roast- is it possible to get a decent espresso with medium roast?
No but decent for latte!
Maybe not for this eight o clock coffee but in genral yes! many beans prepared with espresso in mind are medium roast
drax14QC thank you- will need to experiment!
@@grammymurry Sure! Actually many people prefer a medium roast for espresso. But some prefer lighter or darker roast.. best thing is as you said: experiment and see what works best for you!
8 o'clock coffee from what I understand and remember was a A&P staple which launched A&P supermarkets along with their meats.
I recently bought the same product but the pressure needle doesnt move even after adjusting the settings. Any help you can throw my way?
Great video Hoon!
Glad you enjoyed
Oh my beloved Eight O’clock gets spanked. I love that brand for my drip coffee with some almond milk, but sad to hear it may not be a good brand for espresso. Gonna still try it in my Krupa pressurized portafilter. Great reviews Hoon.
Try the Peet;s coffee. For the price, really good!
Great video
I just bought my barista express, I can’t seem to get the right grind setting, I’m getting low pressure. I started my burr setting at 6 and now it’s in 3, started my grind setting at 7 & now on 3 and I still have low pressure. I’m using the Lava Zac gran creama, please help!!!
I’m new to this and recently bought it last week. Tried few settings but still no pressure. I’m using vittoria beans here in Sydney Australia
What current setting at ?
What about the inner burr adjustment ? Is it on 6?
what is you inner burr setting?
What about dropping the water temp a couple of degrees??
Hello Hoon. Does making the coffee grounds coarser create more pressure? It seems like if the grounds were finer they would create more pressure. Thank you for your videos!!!
Actually finer grind makes more pressure.
Hey Hoon, I actually realized I mistook the higher numbers on my barista express as the finer settings. So I was dialing it coarser (thinking it was finer) and getting less pressure. Your videos have helped me so much. Thank you buddy :)
Eight O’Clock coffee is not made for espresso. It’s for pour over and is not a very good coffee. It was originally sold by A & P Supermarkets.
How's your coffee machine lately?
Try with pressurized basket and see what happens?
Hoon's Coffee i just found a new info in regards to the machine, there is grind setting inside which is set to 6. Now i know y I wasn’t getting fine grind!
I don’t know why mine stays in the pressure zone for no more that 2 seconds . Can anybody help me to figure out why ?
How long is the total shot time.
It takes 5 seconds before the coffee comes out. Then 3 to 5 seconds till the needle reaches the pressure zone then stops immediately.
I have the breville bambino and very little esspresso comes out. Do you know why?
Great, thanks. I use Breville Smart grinder pro 820 with Breville 840 for espresso (single wall). Which number I set up my grinder?
Start with middle and adjust up or down depends on shots.
Hoon's Coffee thanks. I used number 10 (30 number for espresso), pressure 9 o’clock). If down & high pressure then more bitter, why?
Hi! me again!
ok, so i'm going to throw this one at you.
I have always brewed using the double basket and dose.
Ive been using Lavazza Rossa.
I decided to try the single (unpressurised) basket.
I used the same grind setting as double but the single dose, tamped the same (medium pressure)
pressure off the scale, extraction very slow, bitter crap.
Have you experimented with the single basket?
Its just for those times when i want a lighter drink, less caffeine etc.
Check out this video ua-cam.com/video/AxRAb2Rdg0E/v-deo.html. This should walk you through my grinder setting process
My experience is the same as yours. Good extraction with double espresso tends to be overextracted when brewing single espresso.
Maybe using the dual wall porta filter will produce better shots on coffees with unknown roasted date.
Good point! Double wall basket makes all the shots looks so much better!
What does it mean if I have changed my grind size to 1 and it’s only just getting into the espresso range?
you need to change/adjust your inner bur down by one number or 2
Just to say this video is still helping in October 2024!!
Can u do a review on the peets dark roast french roast beans ? Just got a breville barista pro and am having a hard time but the grounds in my portafilter come out muddy and smushy the puck stays on it or comes out very muddy ...
Sure. I'll this one on the list to review!
Thank you !!! so so much 🙂
I’m also curious about Peet’s!
I did one. ua-cam.com/video/AO5KAQqE7p8/v-deo.html
i bought a sage barista express and weirdly i had a high pressure fast extraction in my first bag coffee lol, idk how to define that but i will try to get another beans i see how it will go i guess
Hi hoon. Ive been looking at the scale you use and others online.
I noticed the scale you linked is an LCD scale, not an LED. Thank you hoon😆😄
Hi Hoon What kind portafilter you using? I mean none pressure fillter ...
Hi Hoon, good video - can you explain why the gap at the top of the PF is so important, if its too small does it change the pressure?
That is a great question Chris. It does change the pressure but more so with grinder setting. Obviously, finer the setting has more pressure,
Hello
My espresso range pressure don’t work, is there something wrong? Or what do you think is the problem
How's coffee taste? Is it sour or bitter?
The coffee taste good , only The gage don’t work or move
Did you get the final answer bc I have the same problem
