  • April 27, 2012 - Members of the Estonia Army gave soldiers of the U.S. Army a test drive in an armored personnel carrier. The Patria (SISU) XA-188 is used by at least ten countries around the world. Includes soundbites from Staff Sgt. Peeter Juurik, National Support Element (NSE-12) Estonian Army. Army Staff Sgt. Daniel Symonds got a chance to take a very different kind of vehicle out for a test drive.

    Greetings from Finland
Just to clarify, the XA-180/185 "PASI" is the product of a Finnish truck maker SISU, which was founded in 1931. Later it became part of the Patria corporation through a merger involving it and other Finnish companies. The XA-188 is a later improved version, which still looks just like the original...
The latest APC from Finland is the Patria AMV, which has been even more popular in the export market than the PASI.

Thank you all for your comments about my story. I know some viewers think the story should of gone into detail about the sisu abilities, but I felt going on about technical details was boring and done before. So i just wanted to have a little fun and make people laugh. Oh, and my Advanced Combat Helmet was issued to me when I was assigned to Iraq in 2009. I had ordered a third party chin strap that was way more comfortable then the government issued one

drove a SISU in lebanon for six months on a tour with the UN some years back with the Irish batt and thought they were brilliant.they could go anywhere,do anything.and take as much punishment that was thrown at it and trust me there was a lot

I served two years in Kosovo 20 years ago and spent countless days and nights on an APC (Sisu 185), and I have to admit it was quite the pleasure standing in the turret on sunny days or sleeping lying on top of the main battery next to the engine compartment on cold nights accompanied by engine humming and yugoslavian radio stations. We used to go 4 soldiers on patrol with these so that the two soldiers in the back had plenty of space. Good times.

@menckencynic Actually, I believe it was the 203 model. I don't remember the specs exactly. I'm pretty sure it could withstand small arms fire though, even AP.

@menckencynic , XA-185 is an old version. It has weak point which can be pierced even with armor piercing 7.62. There are some quick tricks which improve protection but it is better to use XA-188 or newer designs.
You can try to figure out one solution from ua-cam.com/video/Zbm3yiwR0HU/v-deo.html

what helmet is the Staff Sergeant wearing? It looks similar to a MICH helmet, but the chin straps look thinner. It looks like a helmet worn by the Marines in Battle:LA

this vehicle was first PASI and then name or company changed to PATRIA, still a neat vehicle :)

  • @Kekkon3n

Based on what? I might say the new finnish Patria AMW 8x8 is better than Pandur. ;)
Like they said in the video this PASI (or armored SISU) APC is old, but it has a very good mine protection and it's a relatively cheap APC), also One can fit a 1,5 squads with mines, rocketlaunchers, doorbreaching equipment etc.

Thanks for the pertinent information of this vehicle. This video was a little frustrating with its lack of info and excess of comedy relief.

Yeah i was talking about the vehicle it self, but all true what you say. Here in Finland we say Finns and Estonians are cousins, which is quite fitting. On the talking "almost same language", kinda yeah, for me listening somebody speak Estonian is like their speaking Finnish, being 3‰ drunk, lol. I just mostly dont understand it but it sounds familiar.

  • @Kekkon3n

Yaay, it's a Pasi alright. I spent many hours in these during my service in FDF. Quite confy actually.

I think it's just an Advance Combat Helmet, I'm not sure, the current helmet and armor technologies are changing really fast these days, I wouldn't be surprised if the production straps and materials have changed several times in recent years

Patria has now made a new vehicle based on experiences of this Pasi., called Patria 6x6. Here you can see a test drive of first Pasi, then 6x6.
    The video has English subtitles.

Also it has hydraulic propellers behind and when driving on water most of it is under the surface making it hard to see and difficult to shoot at.

Maybe yes but still slow af in water (~8km/h) and thus an easy target with no where to hide and only a machinegun to defend itself.

I'm not criticising anything, I'm seriously contemplating joining the armed forces when I graduate. All I meant is that it looks a lot like a BTR-80 or similar as used by the Russian military.

The Ratel was the first (1972) wheeled armor car worldwide, it was made in designed and made in Africa. And exported out of Africa. And it has it's own Wikipedia page.

I drove the "light" version in Kosovo - the XA-185, that one weighed 11 metric tonnes I think. We had a lot of the XA-188s, and if I dont remember incorrectly it was 19-22 tonnes

Just that you know, these things are made in FINLAND, are used by bunch of other nations, including many members of NATO and these have been used in operations since 80's and have saved countless lives.. as they have a "v-hull" and are proofed against at least 10kg type of typical anti-tank mines for direct hits.. check wikipedia for "Patria Pasi".
