No F-35, no problem, as Turkey's fifth-gen fighter jet KAAN takes off

- Опубліковано 26 лют 2024
- In a landmark moment for Turkish aerospace, its first locally made combat aircraft, the KAAN fighter, completed its maiden flight at the Akinci air base, near Ankara.
On the surface, the 13-minute flight might seem like a tame effort, but it is a huge step in the country's efforts to upgrade its air force.
Turkey is aiming to become one of the few countries possessing the entire value chain for making advanced combat aircraft, covering everything from technology, infrastructure, human resources and manufacturing capabilities.

As a former US veteran it makes me happy that Turkey is doing this themselves. The experience you’ll gain through this project is invaluable and Turkey will be a regional pillar of power, especially after their military build up commences. Variety of platforms is always going to be beneficial.
we are now on the way to becoming enemies, thanks to the US administrators. Unfortunately, those who govern the USA support terrorists. And it makes us feel betrayed.

Hvala puno bratte
We thank you. Turkiye, Balkan and Caucasian Muslims are one. Approximately 25 percent of Turkey's population consists of Balkan and Caucasian immigrants. Turks love Bosniaks very much and see you as true brothers. I am also proud of the achievements of my Bosniak brothers and sisters.
Congratulating Türkiye for not allowing to be blackmailed by Zionists and Anglosaxons
MasaAllah. Allah razi ola moj bratte.
This is good for Turkey. The hardest part for any domestic military is build their own fighter jet. Over next iteration after next, Turkey will learn and improve on building better fighter jets. US & Russia are few countries that make best selling jets because they have been building them for decades. Its great Turkey have passed there first major hurdles and will only improve from there onwards
Right. And people are not important. They can be poor, but still pay for fighter dev and construction.
@@good-russianTurkey isn't exactly poor. By nominal GDP, it ranks 17th in the world.
But, it does have a severe poverty rate, so I do agree with you.
@@good-russianAverage Turkish citizen is not "poor" per se, however indeed we are getting poorer but the main reason is refugees and uncontrolled migration.
@@good-russian In fact, an average Turkish citizen is richer than an average Russian. And their government is corrupt but not as much as Russia do. I mean you can go to the prison in Turkey while you just "free" fall from a window in Russia 😛
Next is how to maintain know how and keep competitive with other countries. Long term financial commitment is must consider one
Don't underestimate Turkey's weapon-making ability. They are quite competent and efficient.
They do it with passion, while the US industry is mostly about filling pockets.
I bet barely 1/10 of the funding actually goes into real arms development.
I'm going to underestimate their manufacturing prowess, many countries have the capability to produce a concept, but producing them in quantity and keeping their quality is an entirely different thing. By the time it hits production it will be too few and too late.
@@Clarkem1They said the same thing for their drones. Look at them now, they have become the biggest drone exporters. People write songs about them.
Thanks for the warning, as I was just about to underestimate them but alas, your timely intervention has saved the day.
@@Clarkem1F-35 will remain in service of USAF until 2070s, so if Turkey manages to mass produce their own 5th generation jet fighters even few years later than anticipated, they can still use that aircraft for good few decades.
And I have no doubts about the manufacturing quality of the Turkish aerospace industries. They were competent enough to be the secondary supplier of the F-35 frontal fuselages and many other components while they were still a part of the JSF program.
Its no surprise, the unmanned and stealthy drone fighter kizilelma is testament of the speed turkey is climbing the military power ladder.
Good for Turkey, better than being endlessly blackmailed by so-called "allies"

They make very robust military devices. Armed drones are already number 1... They have autonomous weapons that are far above artificial intelligence. Military tactical vehicles are almost unaffected by mines. They use new techniques in their frigates, they are very robust. They produced paint unrecognizability technology. They made armor from a mine, it has absolutely no effect on mines etc. The last one they made is said to be 5 generations old, but it could even be 6 generations.
It's not 5 generations yet. In 2033, there will be 5 generations with engines we produce ourselves. Guaranteed, Turkey produces quality military products and they even produce better quality materials than western countries. This aircraft will be the technology of the future. Revolution for Türkiye.
They do some good stuff but I wouldn’t overstate it either…the reaper drones beat out the bayraktar and the new US drone looks like a mini B52 spirit bomber which brings me on to to B52 Spirit bomber…I’m not knocking Turkeys ability but I wouldn’t argue it’s “ground breaking” or “world beating”
@@tl9223 It is a little far fetched to compare turkish military abilities to the US but reapers and bayraktat tb2s are completely different categories. Turkey does have drones that are better that US, it also has possibly better armoured vehicles that US however when it comes to high tech and aviation, the US is obviously better.
@@OverAndOver303 The only thing we lacked was engine production, and now there are great developments in those matters. If we can produce the engine ourselves, the rest is easy for us. The high technology you mentioned is no longer available only to you. You are not aware of the development in the world. For example, China is ahead of you in every aspect. Since we now understand that you cannot be trusted, we can get the information we need from them.
@@tl9223 I mean yes true, Americans collectively made one of the best of alot of military tech in this world. But you cannot deny that for a Turkiye whom is only a 85million country, and is making wonders against larger budgeted and populated countries like USA, Russia, China, India etc. The Turkish mindset is amazing to watch and how their engineers have sacrificed a lot to get the Turkish Defence Industry to where it is today. In the 1960s, as Turkey and Greece's dispute over Cyprus grew
On June 5, 1964, then US President Lyndon B. Johnson sent the famous Johnson Letter to Turkey
In the letter, it was stated that Turkey's unilateral intervention in the island could lead to a war between the Turkish and Greek sides and that it was unacceptable for these two NATO member countries to fight. It was reminded that Turkey should consult with its allies before deciding to intervene. It was also implied that this war would lead to the possibility of the Soviet Union intervening in Turkey and that NATO would be reluctant to defend Turkey in such a situation. It was stated that the military equipment provided by the US to Turkey would not be allowed to be used in this intervention. Following the letter, Turkey abandoned its decision to intervene
The letter is of great importance due to its impact on both Turkish public opinion and Turkish foreign policy. The letter was written in a very harsh and rude style and included humiliating expressions. The letter, which was kept secret from the public for a while, caused great disappointment both in the administration and the Turkish public. It also heralded some important changes in Turkey-US relations and Turkish foreign policy. Thanks to this letter, Turkey, which was a member of the Western bloc at the time, realized that there could be difficulties in developing independent policies when its national interests conflicted with the interests of the Western bloc, especially the US, the leader of the bloc,
The international system is also influential here. In the bipolar system, as the distinction between the blocs hardened, the bloc members had difficulty in developing policies independent of the bloc they were in. As a matter of fact, after this date, with the effect of the softening of relations between the blocs, Turkey started to pursue multilateral policies. The dependence on the United States in foreign policy decreased and even minimized, and the process of rapprochement with the Soviet Union began.
After 10 years of preparation following this letter, Turkey intervened in Cyprus in 1974 to protect the Turkish minority on the island and was subjected to very heavy embargoes.
The decision to establish and develop Turkey's domestic and national defense industry was taken after the Johnson Letter in 1964 and has been implemented uninterruptedly by every Turkish President.

Welcome ottoman
KAAN means king of kings in Turkish, and his name is charismatic like himself.
Hello,
İt Means Tuerkiye not Turkey...
KAAN = TARİH DOĞUM KRALLARIN KRALI
KF-21 'Boramae' successfully conducted its first live fire of the medium-range air-to-air missile 'Meteor' on May 8.
According to the defense industry on the 8th, the KF-21 equipped with Meteor took off from Sacheon Airport at 11:45 am on this day and waited in the air, successfully launched at 12:20 pm and returned at 12:47 pm.
With this, the Boramae became the world's fourth fighter jet to successfully conduct a Meteor live-fire, following the Eurofighter, Rafale, and Gripen. Previously, Boramae successfully conducted an armament separation test for the Meteor test projectile last year.
The live fire was carried out by tracking the unmanned aerial vehicle 87km away with the AESA (active electronically scanned array) radar mounted on the aircraft and firing a Meteor to pass by within 1m next to the unmanned aerial vehicle.
With the successful live-fire of the Meteor, the KF-21 proved its long-distance detection and shoot-down capabilities.
On May 2nd, KF-21 broke through Mach 1.8 for the first time, faster than the US F-35.
It is equipped with 40% domestically produced engines from the US aircraft carrier F-18 Super Hornet, and its instantaneous thrust is equivalent to the pulling force of 44,000 horses.
So far, the aircraft's stability and missile operation have been tested by flying at low speeds of 400 to 800 km per hour, and it was confirmed that the aircraft's maximum speed of Mach 1.8 was exceeded for the first time during a test flight on the 2nd.
Mach 1.8, which is nearly twice the speed of sound, is 2,200 km/h, which is faster than not only the domestically produced fighter FA-50, but also the F-35A, a strategic asset of our Air Force introduced from the United States.
It’s better not to rely on America.

looking like the lovechild of an F-22 and an F-35 does not a fifth-gen fighter make. The real differentiator is software and sensor fusion, something that can’t be ascertained about the KAAN.
Technically any Fighter designed with stealth as a main focus is a fifth generation.. The computer side of things isn't mentioned in the definition..
with IOT, the next gen fighters will all be like F-35, each fighter plane will be a sensor sending relevant information back to control & command center.
@@Markus117d Then let me give you a trick. Look at how the horizontal stabilizers move at minute 00:34, humans don't do this, software does it. This baby toy for Türkiye is already flying unmanned vehicles
F-35 is plague with software problems and can't fly within 25 miles of a thunderstorm or other atmospheric electrical activity.
Turkey already operates autonomous drones and was the first country in the world to kill a combatant using an autonomous drone with AI. It makes its own radars and missiles too and makes an unmanned jet too
Turkey reminds me of the old Soviet Union.
It is economically bankrupt, but it has a good weapon industry.
Even in this state, it is better than most countries
Actually, the economy isn't is such a bad state as people suggest. A part of the people is just "broke", but people still come by from day to day and another part has luxury problems.
Ekonomik olarak iflas etmiş bir ülke böyle projeleri gerçekleştiremez dışarıdan göründüğü gibi değil Türkler refah içerisinde yaşıyorlar Türkiye’de olan depremler Avrupa’nın büyük devletlerinden birinde olsa yıkılır giderdi tam tersi Türkiye her felaketten güçlenerek çıkıyor tarih bize diyorki süper güçler böyle çıkmıştır
Turkey is not economically bankrupt, this is definitely a wrong idea. The Turkish economy is growing rapidly. A country with a gross national product of only 250 billion dollars 20 years ago is today the 11th largest economy in the world with a gross national product of 1.19 trillion dollars. It will be among the top 5 major economies within 5-10 years. It is suffering from inflation only due to a major earthquake and huge infrastructure investments. This will be on track in a short time.
@@cengizy5912 I've seen a lot of new apartments and houses that were build in Hatay for the people wou survived the earthquake.
Thanks for explaining the context with the f-35 and recent f-16 deals
Tarihe not olarak kalsın bu yazım. 10 yıl sonra bir daha izleriz bu videoyu inşallah.
Making this a matter of national pride is one of the positive things in the country right now. The whole country wants this to happen. Turkish Media and public opinion seem to be following the developments.
China's not the only one that does knockoffs:)

Long live turkiye the new military power
Regionally relevant. Yet the game of catching up both in quality and quantity can be validated only after a face off.
Actually it seem's more like the F22. In both appearance and role, Assuming video is correct in calling it an air superiority fighter..
Superficially yes but look at the empennage, size and weight - much more like F-35. Plus as the video says Turkey were part of F-35 until they weren't... It's smaller than an F-22 and is designed to replace their F-16 fleet. Yes, it has twin engines but so did the YF-17 slash F/A-18 which is in the same class as the F-16 - designed originally for air-superiority but multi-role in practice just like all modern jets.
@skepticalbadger it's not just the engine count, The air intakes and larger relative wing size strongly resemble the F22 as well.. the wing size matters because bigger wings mean more manoeuvrability.. Which isn't really the main focus of the F35. The F35 is more of a flying combat control and intelligence fighter, Rather than a Dogfighter..
İt is not smaller than f22, Kaan's lenght is 21 meters which is 2.1 meters longer than f22 @@skepticalbadger
@@Markus117dThis jet is getting its own domestic engines which will give a more stealthy look . F16 engine is an interim for prototype
@theancientsancients1769 I Didn't know it had F16 engines.. 👍
World best 5 gen fighter jet
How could you confirm its the best 5th gen fighter? Its still in a test flight and not even tested and proven in combat. It is still long way to go until its completely ready. Meanwhile the current f35 already far ahead and ongoing many updates for the future

I mean it looks just like an F-35. BAE avionics and GE engines means performance should be quite good. However at $100M per, it isn't a huge value vs. an F-35 at $115M. When the price is that close, the overall performance better be as well and I am not convinced a Turkish/Brit mash-up would be anywhere near the overall level of Lockheed Martin's best. If the KAAN were $75M then yeah, no problem. That said; credit to Turkey. One thing the past decade has taught the world, there is no greater return on your own currency than to invest it in designing and building your OWN weapons, in your OWN country, using your OWN resources as much as possible.
Its not an F-35 replacement though so comparing their prices is not fair. With 14m wingspan and 21m length, its actually bigger than F-22 (or J-20). Understandbly so, its also an air superiority fighter like F-22. Despite 20+ year gap, Turkish avionics tech will be lacking relative to US (or Chinese), they need to be larger to get ballpark similar performance, resulting in a bigger airframe.
Wait it’s a $100 million? 😭😭🤣🤣
What a waste, will never live up to that price tag
@@cjjk9142 Always an advantage to develop one's own, provided the project not scrapped after the flying prototypes built as with the UK's TSR2 in the 1960's.
