Short, sweet and to the point! I needed to rename hundreds of staff photos for my workplace to replace a space with an underscore and this worked like a charm. Thank you so very much for posting this!
This video has saved my life and lots of hours I could have wasted. God bless and reward you for sharing this. You earned a life time subscriber. I love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cannot thank you enough!!!!! I had scanned over 2,000 photos and needed to change just part of the filename in several different folders. It's been decades since I've had to think about computers in terms of the DOS command line. I don't know if I ever would have figured out the proper syntax for this command. Your clear, quick, and eminently understandable solution was a blessing indeed.
Sir, you only have 18 thumbs up as I read this, but you just saved me HOURS of work changing an accession number on hundreds if not thousands of photos. THANK YOU and God bless you for posting this.
Well I guess it is my turn to be thankful and express just how much of a difference your video made. A minute ago I changed the file names of 2,565 JPG files at once and this new knowledge saved me not only a great lot of time, but also helped me not let down these important clients, that I am doing work for right now. To be fair this is not a message to our dear Mr. Web & Graphic Design because he knows just how much this tool can do, but to all of you who wanted to deal with a problem on your own - you can do it! Don't be afraid to look for solutions on the internet. Kind people who have a lot of knowledge are there to be heard and to teach us new skills. Anyway, thank you mister :))
Amazing! Thanks so much for sharing this. I was so frustrated that my mac could easily batch rename but windows wouldn't let me. This worked perfectly! Much love :)
This seems like such a simple thing that we shouldn't have to time warp back to 1996 and a DOS to accomplish but THANK YOU for doing this. I'm a photographer and since I found your video you've saved me hours and hours of file renaming.
You saved me so much time as a file naming error was made that was messing up a entire database and I was not about to rename every single one of those files manually
This is fantastic!! Thank you so much for this! You've saved me hours of mind numbing time spend undoing other people's errors. And without needing a hundred other programs or steps. Very quick and concise. Thanks!!
This is GREAT. Thank you! I recently went from the ease of a Mac (rename, find and replace) to being really frustrated trying to figure this out. You saved me countless headaches.
I was changing texture names for my mod and i had 185 files with "milan". i wanted to change it to "france" so i started editing by hand, using ctrl +v but after 15 files i started to search for better way to do it. And here it is! Thank you dude.
This is really great. Is there any way we can rename multiple files of different extensions? Like if I have a pdf, word, and excel file all together in a folder?
Thank you for posting this - really is saving me a lot of time. One thing to note is that if the folder names are too long (or too nested), I get an error message saying the folder can't be found. But on most of the ones I need to change, it works perfectly. I wasn't able to copy/paste the code for some reason, but after I typed it in the first time, I was then able to do so.
Important at the beginning of the 2 lines of code you have to use the file type you are using. In his examples he is using mp3 files. I was using video files. So after the star I replaced mp3 with avi and it worked! 👍🏼
Very good video. I appreciated the straightforward explanation and it is VERY useful information. I have one question, however. I am curious if there is a reason that you didn't simply replace "Stephen Johnson" in one fell swoop. Is there a problem with using a phrase with a space in it? Is that why there is one line of code to replace "Stephen" with something else (OT06), and a second line to remove "Johnson"? And there's the question as to what happened to that space? It didn't seem to be a part of either string. So does it remain in the filename, or does it disappear? Sorry the images were a bit blurred so I couldn't tell either way. Many thanks!
EXCELLENT Video Todd, THAT WORKS!!!! What would that code look like if I just wanted to add numbers to the beginning of every file name in the folder? Please and Thank You!!!
Hey, thanks a lot! My company wont allow me a renaming tool! this helps alot. Is there a way how to add something at the start of a document, or the end with a special script?
That's just a magic you saved all of us from a huge hours of work. Thanks. But I wonder if there is a way of making this code to work on subfolders as well?
Quite confusing. Suppose I have multiple files in different folders with the name Tilda Marie. I want to keep all of the file name, but just change TILDA MARIE in the filename to MARIE TILDA. Nothing else changes in the filename but Tilda Marie to Marie Tilda. Each file maintains its own file name otherwise. ie: c:\Tilda Marie, apple of my eye.jpg to: C:\Marie Tilda, apple of my eye.jpg You can see JUST the name changes and not the rest of the filename. How is this done with it removing the rest of the file name, etc.?
I got a bit edit happy and deleted all my file extensions. Since I know nothing about Powershell, I went to stack overflow and copy and pasted one of their examples with some slight modifications to get it done. Probably an easier way to do it but here is what I came up with. gci -ex "*.AVI" | ?{!$_.PsIsContainer} | ren -new {$_.name + ".mp4"} My point is, a big thank you for sending me in a direction that is extremely helpful!
Easy If it works, thanks for the explanation - I try to rename whole bible books Old and New Testament - and then in 10 different languages - all on 1 sd card. May Jesus bless you! Yes! It works! Thanks to the Lord!
many thanks , no way to make it work with folder sub folder as well ,like , let say i have a bunch of jpgs in one sub folder of a folder , no way to enter a code that go find the jpgs into multiple folders ? if that makes sense xd

God bless you Mr Todd, you have saved me lots and lots of hours of work.
This is great, thanks! Please note, in Windows 11 Pro, it's just right-click & "Open in Terminal" instead of Powershell.
This is really great. Is there any way we can rename multiple files of different extensions? Like if I have a pdf, word, and excel file all together in a folder?
I really have wasted hours of my life not knowing about this. THANK YOU
