    This is the best explanation for an electric motor.
    I have watched several videos where they have the same explanations for everything but can’t seem to explain the commutator part vey well.
    Not only did this channel(khan academy) explain all the information vividly , he also explained the commutator part extremely well and I have to say it did take me some time to take in everything , I still understood afterwards which would not have been possible with the other channels.
    Books, websites, videos cannot compete with the explanation you have gave which was outstanding.
    Once again, thank you so much for having such a good explanation and making me understand

    You could put an end to this fabulously communicative video explaining the reason behind the holes in the ring. When the brushes touch the curved segments of the commutator, electrons find the shorter path and don't travel through the rectangular long route. No force, not even any torque acting on the loop. Inertia comes into play and tilts the loop counterclockwise. The brushes now touch the previously untouched segment of the commutator. The current direction reverses.

    a doubt - you said that when the loop is parallel to the magnetic field, the force in
    the yellow wires is trying to pull the loop apart but then will it cause any damage to the loop? like if the force acting on the yellow wire is greater than the force acting on the pink and blue wires?

    • @mann_mishra05
      @mann_mishra05 4 роки тому

      No it won't cause any damage because it can be like...the yellow wires are pulled apart at the same time half the rotation and when they become parallel they become normal

  • @jai5341
    @jai5341 4 роки тому +1

    I am confused as to why the motor turns clockwise in the beginning of the video. Shouldn't it turn counterclockwise as you have the North pole on the right-hand-side and South pole on the left-hand-side. I think you have gotten everything correct but the placement of the poles. If the North pole were on the left-side and South pole were on the right-side, then only would it turn clockwise. Correct me if I am wrong, I study in Canada and it might be different here, but I highly doubt it. Thanks!

    • @nish3003
      @nish3003 4 роки тому

      Jai, actually, I think that is correct according to the left hand rule. Maybe you used your right hand, try using your left hand...

    • @jai5341
      @jai5341 4 роки тому

      NISH You would use your right hand only if you’re dealing with positive charges or conventional current, however in a motor only electrons (negative charges) will be flowing through it as it will be connected to a battery. Thus, when dealing with negative chargers, you are supposed to use your left hand, like you should in an electric motor.

    • @nish3003
      @nish3003 4 роки тому

      Jai, that’s exactly what I said previously. When I tried the left hand rule, the motor was actually rotating in the correct direction. When I tried the rule for the pink wire, my thumb pointed upwards.

    • @jai5341
      @jai5341 4 роки тому

      NISH I did use my left hand rule it’s just not working.... The field should be moving from North to South, but this video is saying it’s moving from South to North. Honestly, we don’t use Fleming’s Left Hand rule here, we use another method. However, no matter what method we use, shouldn’t the result be universal?

    At 7:10 , I don't think that coil will move in reverse direction . As the forces are upward and downward , so the coil will remain stationary and motor will not work .
    But it's not true to say that coil will move in reversed direction

    • @KhanAcademyIndiaEnglish
      @KhanAcademyIndiaEnglish  3 роки тому +1

      You are right about the turning force (torque) being zero. But, since the coil already has some momentum, it would continue to turn. It's similar to how a running ceiling fan continues to turn for a while even after being turned off.

    • @benYaakov
      @benYaakov 3 роки тому +1

      @@KhanAcademyIndiaEnglish But if it is the coil's momentum making it to move further , then it's momentum should make it rotate in same direction , instead that momemtum making it's direction reversed .
      Well , thanks a lot
      The quiz was also awesome .

    • @benYaakov
      @benYaakov 3 роки тому +1

      Exactly from the example of electric fan , it rotates for sometime even when we switch off , but it rotates momentarily in the same direction as it was moving .
      Hence , the coil , if rotates for sometime with momentum , then it should rotate for rest in same direction , instead in reversed direction
